They’re Doing It On Purpose, Shawn!
One guess as to which Sun wasn’t named to any All-NBA teams.
So, in the ongoing interest of delaying the actual MVP presentation until the end of time (or until Katherine Harris finishes validating the ballots), the NBA today announced the 2007 All-NBA teams.
Notable at a glance are the absence of Shaquille O’Neal (for the first time since his rookie season), LeBron’s second-team status, and of course the absence of Shawn Marion—despite the inclusion of both Steve Nash AND Amare Stoudemire on the first team, which may be the final straw that makes Shawn actually fight one of his own teammates in the middle of a playoff game. I wish I could feel sorry for Shawn, I really do, but last I checked he has a max contract (he’s actually the highest-paid Sun) and has been on the All-Star team, so I can’t feel that bad, actually. (I suppose it’s also worth noting that both Nash and Kobe Bryant received more First Team votes than Dirk Nowitzki, but seeing that you have to vote by position, it doesn’t really mean anything.)
Anyway, the teams:
2006-07 ALL-NBA FIRST TEAM
| Position | Player, Team (1st Team Votes) | Points |
| Forward | Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas (125) | 634 |
| Forward | Tim Duncan, San Antonio (94) | 573 |
| Center | Amaré Stoudemire, Phoenix (36) | 494 |
| Guard | Steve Nash, Phoenix (129) | 645 |
| Guard | Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers (128) | 643 |
2006-07 ALL-NBA SECOND TEAM
| Position | Player, Team (1st Team Votes) | Points |
| Forward | LeBron James, Cleveland (64) | 494 |
| Forward | Chris Bosh, Toronto (8) | 234 |
| Center | Yao Ming, Houston (38) | 333 |
| Guard | Gilbert Arenas, Washington | 295 |
| Guard | Tracy McGrady, Houston (10) | 278 |
2006-07 ALL-NBA THIRD TEAM
| Position | Player, Team (1st Team Votes) | Points |
| Forward | Kevin Garnett, Minnesota (5) | 225 |
| Forward | Carmelo Anthony, Denver (1) | 142 |
| Center | Dwight Howard, Orlando (1) | 108 |
| Guard | Dwyane Wade, Miami (1) | 241 |
| Guard | Chauncey Billups, Detroit | 86 |
Other players receiving votes, with point totals (first team votes in parentheses): Carlos Boozer, Utah, 127; Shaquille O’Neal, Miami, 70 (3); Jason Kidd, New Jersey, 58; Marcus Camby, Denver, 42 (2); Shawn Marion, Phoenix, 41; Allen Iverson, Denver, 39; Tony Parker, San Antonio, 39; Vince Carter, New Jersey, 15; Deron Williams, Utah, 15; Josh Howard, Dallas, 11; Elton Brand, L.A. Clippers, 8; Mehmet Okur, Utah, 7; Baron Davis, Golden State, 6; Michael Redd, Milwaukee, 6; Ray Allen, Seattle, 5; Richard Hamilton, Detroit, 4; Joe Johnson, Atlanta, 3; Ben Gordon, Chicago, 3; Chris Paul, New Orleans/Oklahoma City, 3; Paul Pierce, Boston, 2; Ben Wallace, Chicago, 2; Jason Terry, Dallas, 2; Eddy Curry, New York, 2; Luol Deng, Chicago, 1; Chris Webber, Detroit, 1; Jermaine O’Neal, Indiana, 1; Pau Gasol, Memphis, 1; Tyson Chandler, New Orleans/Oklahoma City, 1; Manu Ginobili, San Antonio, 1. The 129-member voting panel of writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada consisted of national media members and members from each of the league’s 30 teams who regularly cover the NBA. The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.
(I still think voters should lose their rights based on ridiculous votes. Who were the three people who gave Shaq first-team votes?)

Marion really couldnt be any higher than the third team this year. Does he realize that all of his deficiencies would be exposed if he were to leave and become the focal point of anotehr offense? He did get screwed on the All D team though. Maybe DPOY too…

Ditto Max. If he was ever doubled or defended tightly for extended periods of time, with that low release, he’d never have a chance to shoot over it.

Bryant Reeves says:
Gilbert didn’t get a single first team vote? Maybe he’ll make the all-interview team.

Exactly Ben. And he’s not that great of a passer or ballhandler either.

Marion’s got nothing to complain about. He needs to give PHX all he has for them to get a title. None of the other stuff matters.

No Jamaal Magloire?! I’m outraged, I guess he will have to settle for MVP votes.

Mike D'Antoni says:
Seriously.I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it. Shawn Marion is one of the most overated players in the NBA right now. Marion is just a product of the Phoenix Suns offensive system.Stick Marion on another team and would he even be an allstar without Nash? Better yet what if Marion got traded to another team and he was the franchise player would he even get a team into the playoffs? Probably not.

When are they going to abandon this position-based voting and just honor the best players for the season. Dwight Howard is a good young player, but All-NBA?

great picture too, even though it kind of looks like Marion is being beemed up to the Enterprise…
May.10 at 5:47 pm
Dblizzy! says:
Yeah if Marion didn’t have a Marbury or Nash to set him up, would he score? I can’t recall him ever consistently creating his own shot. Not trying to shoot him down, he’s good at what he does, but let’s be real here.

Shelden Williams was on the 65th team with Sebastian Telfair, Antoine Wright, Maurice Taylor and Darius Miles.

Russ Bengtson says:
Incidentally, my first team would have been LeBron and Dirk at the forwards, Duncan at center, and Kobe and Nash at the guards.
May.10 at 8:12 pm
Tariq says:
That sounds about right. Marion would probably make 4th team all-NBA. My only changes would be Gilbert and Amare switching 1st and 2nd teams, and Boozer and Kidd instead of Yao and…Melo? No, Melo deserves to be in there…Man, tough call: Boozer or Melo?
May.10 at 8:16 pm
Tariq says:
C’mon, people. LeBron is a better player overall, but if it’s between Gilbert and LeBron for 1st team THIS season, it has to be Hibachi. Wade also had a better season than LeBron. And before anyone starts talking about how the Cavs are still in the playoffs, remember: REGULAR SEASON awards.
May.10 at 8:22 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
All well and good, but All-NBA is positional. Bron is a forward, and no way do Gil or D Wade beat out Kobe or Nash for a guard spot. And say what you want about LeBron coasting, he still averaged 27, 6 and 7 and led his team to 50 wins. Not to mention Wade missed 30 games.
May.10 at 8:27 pm
Drolfe says:
The center position on all three teams are suprising for me. I would have Yao in the first team, Amare in the second and Shaq in the third. But i guess it’s mainly due to injuries. I hate injuries.
May.10 at 8:34 pm
Drolfe says:
Although if someone told me at the start of the season that Amare would make All-NBA first team, i would’ve smiled for days and maybe even performed a celebratory jig.

Dennard says:
43rd team, LOL. Russ, brilliant as always.
May.10 at 9:00 pm
Dennard says:
@KG, Tim Duncan overrated? An argument can be made the Tim Duncan is underrated, look at the standings for every full season he as played, his team has never lost more than 53 games. Think about that for a second, on a team that he has been a part of has never had a record worse than 53-29. On average his team’s win 58 games a season. That equals a top 3 seed in the playoffs every year, in the Western Conference . Come on dude, I know Duncan may be viewed as a boring player(not IMO), but this guy is an all-timer.
May.10 at 9:10 pm
Michael says:
D-wade should have been seond team over T-mac. Yeah he only played half the year but stats wise he had agruably the best all around year of any player. Shawn Marion shouldn’t be on any team, who are they going to put him over,Dirk, Duncan, Bosh, Melo, Kg. They are all better than him, not to mention Carlos Boozer. How did Billups have a better year than Jason Kidd. ANd looking at that list, theres a lot of damn good individual palyers in the league. Why aren’t there more good teams?

So, watching The Score up here in Canada, and they just mentioned that Dirk has won the NBA MVP. I really thought Nash would grab his third straight. I assume the voting was close and it probably ended up Dirk, Nash, Kobe, Lebron. After watching three or four Suns games when Nash was out around the All-Star break, I really felt like it the 3-peat was a done deal.
May.11 at 12:17 am
2G40 says:
I’ll take the third team, with Jerry Sloan or Don Nelson as head coach any day over the first and second team. Also, as a nets fan I would love to have Marion playing pf, and running that break w/ JKidd…the guy wouldn’t miss a beat.
May.11 at 12:53 am
2G40 says:
Oh, somebody said that KG was overrated…Your nut’s! First, the guy’s dropping 23 and 12 with 2 bloked shot’s everynight, on a team that doesn’t have a Nash, Parker, Billups, Kidd, or Deron Williams.
-
Second, if you look at the teams that have lost, LA, Dallas, and Houston, or those that are struggling (NJ, Chicago) and plug KG in at the four, the whole playoff picture would be different.
May.11 at 1:20 am
David says:
Do the players get anything for making the all-nba teams? This seems like one of the most under-rated of annual accomplishments. Shouldn’t it be a bigger deal to be among the 15 best players in the league? Is it sports writers that vote for these teams or is it coaches or something?
May.11 at 2:00 am
Ronald says:
What do they get for being All-Nba? Erm, its pretty intangible. But it’s kinda like having accomplishments in your CV. You know, easier to convince your boss to get a “max-contract”. I think All-NBA is Coaches. And MVP is Media. Vice versa.
May.11 at 2:04 am
Ronald says:
And the one who said the 2nd and 3rd team were better than the 1st team is a freaking idiot. Seriously?
May.11 at 2:11 am
Young C says:
No outrage for Carlos Boozer? He should have been at least on the third team. Dwight Howard does nothing but dunks, and not at a young Shaq type rate either. Booze was a monster this year
May.11 at 3:55 am
2G40 says:
@Young C, I agree you could move KG over to center, plug in Boozer at pf and the 3rd team is probably as good as the first, if not better IMO. Amar’e a beast, but thats only due to Nash’s ability as a pg, and the system the suns run. Nobody really knows how good Amar’e would be on another team.
-
Also, has anyone noticed how none of the players on the second team have a chip, while the 1st and 3rd have two players. Kobe has three, but he really wasn’t a factor in his first two championships.
May.11 at 5:40 am
Kostas says:
KG (and Melo) over Booze is the only truly obvious “injustice”. However, in my book, Kidd should have gotten the nod over Chauncey or Dwyane. He was the Nets all by himself, and it might be the last time we EVER see someone playing like JKIdd on the level he played this year. Games with 6 pts, 13 reb and 8 assists? Are you kidding me (no pun intended)? They broke the mold after they made Kidd, and unique skills should ne rewarded. It is alarming to see that writers otherwise voting extremely conservatively forget about players like Kidd.
May.11 at 5:41 am
Kostas says:
That should have been “18 assists”, just for the record…

Russ, ok, if you can’t have Kobe, Nash and Gil on the 1st team, I guess LeBron does deserve to be there. I’m still broken up about Shawny boy though… he should at least get a max contract to ease his pain.

Can’t believe Kidd isn’t there, and how come T-mac was a forward on the all-star ballot and is now a guard on this ballot? Kidd, although he isn’t a better PG than Nash (Nash is smooth enough on offense to put up Iverson type ppg’s which is why he such a nightmare for defenders) he is a better all-round player, and has been the best point guard in the NBA for all but the last 3 years of his career. Just ‘cos Nash is the new darling everyones forgot about one of the best PG’s in the history of the game. Chauncey f*cking Billups, do me a favour.
May.11 at 10:13 am
Chris says:
Mike D’Antoni: yeah right. Like Marion hasn’t put up 20 and 10 his ENTIRE career. I agree that the guy would have trouble as the #1 option on a team, but you can’t deny the overall game he gives you. And yes, Kidd should have definately made the third. Oh, I almost forgot: what idiot left Kobe off the first team? He should never ever be able to vote again.

The lakers may not of one thir first ring if it wasn’t for Kobe stepping up in game 4 when sahq fouled out. Somebody please explain this to me. There are 129 voters. Presumably each voter gets one vote. The voters have to vote according to position. At the guard position, Steve Nash received 129 first place votes, and Kobe received 128. Which means that there is one more first place vote at the guard position for the rest of the players in the league. Yet McGrady received 10 first place votes, and Wade received 1. How is this even possible? Were Kobe, McGrady, and Wade eligible at the small forward spot as well? Or does the NBA just not know how to count?

A few comments:
Marion isn’t overrated, is just that people that do the things he does (AK,Gerald Wallace, Iggy to some extend), are criminally underrated. They are key cogs to any team that want’s to be dominant, but they are usually the last piece of the puzzle, you have to assemble a great team, and then their true value will be obvious.
Dwight:He is more likely to win a title in the next few years than say Paul Pierce, even if he isn;t as good a player. That’s because he can play Center, and while other key parts for a successful team can be found, C’s are rare. So, it’s fair puttung him there, he is more valuable than guys that didn’t make it.
Chauncey vs AI: While AI could almost win a championship singlehandedly, he finds it difficult to play within the tea. So it’s Chauncey, all the way.
May.12 at 11:15 pm
Tye says:
Jasen. If you look at the center and forward spots they too do not add up to 129 a position. The voters place a player into a position. Some people consider someone a guard while another voter will consider them a forward. Since there are not many true centers forwards ended up with center votes and guards ended up with forward votes and vice versa Im sure.
