Links: Kobe, Where Do We Go Now?
Welcome to the (trade) jungle.
You didn’t hear? Kobe wants to be traded. The question now is, where do you send him? Let’s go through all 29 other teams and figure out the most likely destinations, and who could give up what for Kobe. Call me Sam Smith.
One thing to remember: Kobe has a no-trade clause in his contract, which means he would have to approve any trade. If, as he’s said, his main interest is to go to a contender (or a team willing to spend cash and rebuild), that rules a lot of teams out.
ATLANTA: Here’s one that works: Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Speedy Claxton, Zaza Pachulia and the third pick in the Draft for Kobe. Hell, Billy Knight, throw in the 11 pick, too. This would give the Lakers five or six young pieces to build around and turn into a run-and-gun team. It would not, however, give them much star power. The Hawks could team Joe Johnson and KB24 and Kobe would own the South. The Hawks would also be a big man away from contending in the East.
BOSTON: A trade for LA-native Paul Pierce, Bassy, Gerald Green and the number 5 pick would work. Then again, the Celts already have told us they have a Playoff team, so why break that up?
CHARLOTTE BETcats: Adam Morrison, Ray Felton and Gerald Wallace (who they’d probably have to sign-and-trade) plus the 8th pick. This could return Kobe to the city that originally drafted him and allow him to play for Michael Jordan. Would give the Lakers three really good young guys. The BETcats would suck, though.
CHICAGO: The Bulls are supposedly one of Kobe’s preferred destinations, but they’d have to give up a lot to get him since Gordon and Luol are still on their rookie contracts. In fact, Gordon, Luol and Tyrus Thomas still isn’t enough. They’re all nice players, but if I’m the Lakers I need a superstar in return for my superstar, and none of the Bulls that would be available are superstars.
CLEVELAND: I just can’t see the Cavs having the chips to team Kobe and LeBron, and I can’t see either of those guys wanting to share the spotlight (or the ball) in Cleveland.
DALLAS: Now this would be interesting. You know Mark Cuban would love to throw the Mavs into the mix, but short of giving up Dirk, I don’t think LA would be interested. If you’re the Lakers and you’ve got to rebuild, do you consider Dirk as being past his prime? It’s insane to think you wouldn’t want to trade for the reigning MVP, right? How about Kobe and VladRad for Dirk and Jason Terry?
DENVER: Yeah, don’t think Kobe would want to go back to Colorado. Next!
DETROIT: I don’t think the Pistons would be interested in breaking up what they’ve got going.
GOLDEN STATE: This is the first team in LA’s division, and while it would be fun to imagine Kobe and Nellie together, I’m not sure the Lakers would move Kobe within the same division. They might, sure, but not if they know what’s good for them.
HOUSTON: How about this: Kobe for T-Mac, with Houston’s 26th pick. The Rockets would get another great swingman to team with Yao, while Tracy would have a bigger stage to shine on and give the Lakers a player who would work well in the Triangle offense. And don’t think T-Mac wouldn’t like being in L.A.
INDIANA: The Pacers have definitely reached the point where they need to do something drastic, but the problem is that Jermaine O’Neal and Kobe make the same salary. And if I’m trading Kobe, I want multiple pieces in return. Indy doesn’t even have a first rounder this year to throw in.
CLIPPERS: No way the Lakers let Kobe stay in L.A.
MEMPHIS: I initially thought there was no way the Grizz had the chips to make this happen, but what about this: Pau Gasol, Stromile Swift and the 4th pick for Kobe. The Lakers could conceivably come away with Gasol, Stro and Horford or Brewer.
MIAMI: Short of Dwyane Wade, if I’m L.A. there’s nobody on Miami that I want.
MILWAUKEE: Redd and Bogut for Kobe works, though I have a feeling Kobe will not be wanting to go to Milwaukee.
MINNESOTA: Again, if I’m Kobe I’m not going to Minnesota.
NEW JERSEY NETS: If LA wants a marquee name, they go get Vince plus Richard Jefferson. Not sure how well the Triangle works when the shooting guard refuses to drive to the basket. The Nets could team Kobe, Kidd and Krstic. Terrified to think of what nickname the New York Post would give those three.
NEW ORLEANS HORNETS: Kobe’s always talked about his respect for Byron Scott, and the Hornets have made a lot of moves in recent years. But if I was LA, I’d want Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler, and they’re not even close to Kobe’s seems like an interesting fit, though.
NEW YORK KNICKS: Tell the truth: You know Kobe would love to come to NYC and you know Isiah would kill to have him. But the Knicks are dealing with such ridiculous salaries that it’s pretty much impossible to do. Or think of it this way: If you’re the Lakers, which Knicks player would you want? Yeah.
ORLANDO: Again, nothing to deal with, other than Dwight Howard and some assorted junk.
PHILADELPHIA: Even though Kobe’s from Philly, here’s another team without the chips to make a move.
PHOENIX: Here’s Phoenix’s chance to move Shawn Marion, though again, it’s within the Division. And I don’t know if the Lakers could build everything around Marion — isn’t he more of a complimentary player?
PORTLAND: Oden and Roy (plus Lafrentz for salary purposes)? I don’t think Portland would be willing to give up their rebuilding plan for Kobe.
SAN ANTONIO: Nope.
SEATTLE: Another interesting destination. If LA wants a name, there’s that Durant guy. Throw in Ray Allen to make the salaries match. Hmm. Would Kobe like playing in Oklahoma City?
TORONTO: If Kobe wants to play in a cosmopolitan city with a top GM and a coach who mentored him early on, here’s the move. But if I’m the Lakers, Toronto doesn’t have enough to make me give up KB24.
UTAH: Kobe and Boozer share the same agent. Would Utah give up Deron Williams and Kirilenko to add Kobe?
WASHINGTON: OK, LA, you want a star? How about California boy Gilbert Arenas and SLAMonline columnist Etan Thomas?

The Lakers are going to have to take back a bunch of assorted junk to get what they want. Young stars are usually making rookie scale money, which means the Lakers would have approximately 126 guaranteed contracts if they trade Kobe for young talent and draft picks. They’ll pretty much have to trade Kobe for 75 cents on the dollar, spare parts and draft picks.

The problem with trading Kobe for a star, is that the stars that are on the block are either flawed, or would have to remain on the team in question for Kobe to give the thumbs up for a trade. No way Kobe goes to Boston unless Paul Pierce is there. No way Kobe goes to Atlanta with no Joe Johnson to play with. Kobe wants to win now, but any team that trades for him will have to give up so much that they’ll essentially have to enter rebuilding mode anyway.

I’m sure in a minute I’ll be able to enjoy all of the drama, trade speculation and other stuff this brings along, but for now let me be a spoilsport and say this: it boggles the mind how completely these guys have lost their sense of proportion. Kobe makes something like 20 million per year doing something most of us could only dream of, and he has the gall to demand a trade, since, basically, he is not having enough fun? Incredible.

Kobe in NY would be so sick but alot of the team’s would have to give up young rising star’s, for instants my team “The Jazz”, personally I’d rather keep D-Will at 22 or 23 than take a Kobe pushing thirty, not that he aint great and he still has alot to give but he will start to decline way before younger guy’s like a Chris Bosh, or a Chris Paul ect.! So really the only trade’s that make sense are trades for guy’s like Pierce and change, or packaged young roll players like the Bulls package of Gordon, Deng, and Thomas!

I would love it if the hawks could get Bean. I still say that Atlanta needs to somehow get a big man. If ATL is lucky, then they get Kobe and in a few years sign the hometown bot Dwight Howard. This is all fun…but Kevin Ding at the OC Register is reporting that Kobe has already recanted this morning’s demand…more than once on multiple radio shows. Then again, maybe tomorrow he will be back on the block. So best to be prepared. I love Kobe, but lord he’s stirring up some chaos…

Lets get real here. If Kobe does demand a trade, really demand one, the Lakers are not going to get true value. No team ever put in that position ever gets back true value. Also, it would mean that the Lakers would have no choice but to rebuild. They wouldnt have enough pieces to make a run. So think of the Vince Carter deal…perhaps a little better…but draft picks, expiring contracts, and cap space. These are distress sales…not arms length transactions. Philly has three first round picks and a few contracts that could be lumped together but not Iguodala. That kind of deal.

Don’t see many scenarios in which Kobe comes out on top of this thing, though. He’ll probably end up in the middle of another rebuilding project. The Bulls would be crazy to part with both Deng and Gordon (+ pocket lint) for Bryant.

Lang, you say that the Lakers wouldnt go for a Bulls trade because they dont have any star power to offer, and yet youre talking about an Atlanta deal that wouldnt include Joe Johnson. what gives? personally i dont think LA necessarily needs a superstar back. it’d be nice, but lots of young guys on the come up might be good start. as a chicago fan, i say that deng and hinrich are untouchable. i’d like to say the same for the two bens, but i dont think kobe and BG could coexist and wallace’s contract is so big that he’d have to be included in the deal so that chicago has cap space to accomodate kobe. i dont know….if we pull it off i think we’re definitely going to have to say goodbye to either deng, gordon, or wallace, or all three. o, and id like to think of tyrus thomas as untouchable too. but i cant have too many stipulations; it’s kobe bryant.

I think the trade to Houston for T-Mac and the 26th pick could work. The main concern for the Lakers would be considering T-Mac’s injury problems for the past few years. Kobe + Yao = Rings.

Chicago stands the best chance of getting Kobe, It just makes sense, and you know the powers that be would love to see the Eastern Conf get some love after losing AI (among others) along with the top two draft picks. If kobe doesn’t flip flop on his demand to be traded, Chicago will be killers. However, how will kobe adjust to playing for Scott Skiles? Or will Skiles have to do the adjusting?

kobe may be better than t-mac, but t-mac is a brilliant player. how much of an upgrade would it really be? i think the only reason houston would do it would be so that they didn’t have to worry about t-mac’s back anymore. i guess it would work but it seems kind of silly; t-mac’s position isn’t the one that needs upgrading. it’s some positions around yao and t-mac. if they have a good offseason they can be contenders in the west next season.

I dont think he will be traded but if he did, the only way it would happen would be if the Lakers got one of the top, most marketable stars in the league, he went to the east and it was to a big city. For me, the only option then becomes Washington and Gilbert. Seriously, I cant think of anyone who is approaching their prime that could sell almost as many tix as Kobe that is a possibility. The only others are Wade and Lebron and that aint happening. Gilbert plus change would almost be bearable for the LA faithful, wouldnt it? Still, he aint going anywhere. Oh yeah, that list just demonstrated why expansion sucks and the talent is spread way too thin across the league.

Kobe needs to either stay put and abide by his contract or he should ask the Lakers to renegotiate his contract for a lower amount so that he is tradeable. He should have thought about the 7-year committment to play for the Lakers three years ago when he signed on the dotted line.

Let’s face it, management isn’t always going to do what’s in the best interests of the player, they’re going to do what’s in the best interests of the team. It’s time that Kobe said something, after all, a player’s career is only so long. He can win more championships with a team that has the supporting cast. Maybe he should join Garnett? Maybe the Mavericks? Take the pay cut and go where you can win more championships.

This brings up a good point. Everybody wants him to go to the east. Why? Because the east sucks balls. Aside from miami getting lucky, i know i dont want the pistons being the only good team in the east. I would love him in NY but that wont happen. I think the most likely place would be the NJ. They have the most to deal with being carter, kidd, and jefferson. Having him on their team would probabaly be the best trade possible in the east. By the way are the Sacramento Kings still a team. I mean even the spurs and pistons had more written about them. seriously got back and rewrite something for the kings.

Two more things. Hes not going to the bulls because they just got Ben Wallace and given time the young players can make a good team. Second if there would be a new team it should be in Pittsburg. I mean im glad the sixers got rid of AI but come on there still a sh*ty team (and im not saying AI is bad i just don’t like him). If they did that i could finally have a good sports team in PA. The problem is there’s no way the guy gets traded. it would be stupid for the Lakers to give him up for anyone other than Wade, LeBron, or Melo, and neither of those teams are giving up their franchise player. This will make for an interesting next season.

P.S. The Lakers shouldn’t go for a superstar, they should go for numerous young pieces (preferably not wingers), and draft picks (this years draft or a third team’s picks, since next year, the team that gets 24 is gonna pick 30th)

I would hate to see Kobe leave L.A, but the trade with the Rockets would work, if you are houston. If I was houston I would be all in on that because Kobe has 3 rings and T-Mac has never been out of the first round (sure Kobe played with Shaq, but T-Mac has given it a shot with yao and still hasn’t move further into the playoffs). T-Mac also said a will ago that he plans to retire as soon as his contract expires becuase of his back problems, so houston does need an upgrade at the 2. I still hope that Kobe sticks around with the lake show.

Kobe, Jermaine O’Neil to the Knicks, sounds like a DREAM, but everyone knows that with the right pen anything can happen. As long as the possibility is there, we have hope. Trade - Marbury, Frye, Robinson, francis, Jeffries. And next years 1st round pick. It’s alot but it would put us back into the mix as a contender.

Good post but Kobe for T-Mac, hell no! H-town doesn’t want a selfish, arrogant player who wants to play GM. He got rid of Shaq, which essentially got rid of the supporting cast that won 3 rings so he could be the man and now says the organization isn’t doing enough to win? Kobe has had 0 team success since Shaq left. T-Mac can score with the best of them, is one of the best passers in the league and actually a good guy. No thanks to Phonie #24.

T-Mac is my favorite player and i think that that is the best the lakers could get out of all the teams, i dont want to see tmac go but if he does i will support the lakers now but i think that tmac might quit on himself knowing a championship run would be near impossible but i have to admit i do want to see the “orlando magic” tmac back and get bak to scoring high numbers but i would also like to see a championship

Oh Bleed Red Rockets Fan, “T- mac is actually a good guy”, nothing against him personally, but professionally? not too long ago he was demanding a trade from my boys, the magic, (who could have given lebron a serious test this year in the second season with t-mac, g-hill and D-ho)because they couldn’t surround him with any talent, strange since before that he demanded a trade from t-dot because he couldn’t share the spotlight with his more obnoxious and talented cousin vinnie. Kobe is a nice guy personnally as well, it’s just perfessionally these guys are dicks. FREE KOBE ! He doesn’t deserve the hate. The only deal I can think of and im surprised it wasnt in there, Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis to LA, Kobe goes to seattle to mentor a young kid with some talent you may have heard about while management finds some complimentary players that can fit between those egos. I dont know that much about Durant, but if I was coming into the league with the hype surrounding being the first freshman to be named ncaa playa of the year since…. ever, I think I’d have a bit of an oversized head too.

I’ve been racking my brain all week trying to work out a trade scenario that is beneficial to all teams involved. I have a 3 team trade scenario that would actually improve the vegas moneyline on each team’s odds to win the championship next year, and the salaries work to boot. The only catch is….Kobe (it was consensual sex) Bryant would land himself in Denver.
Here is what each team would gain and lose with that player’s 2007-8 salary in parentheses.
Lakers:

Vladimir (5.6) The Lakers could have a starting lineup of Iverson, Smith, Walton, KG, and Kwame/Mihm. The Nuggets would start Blake, Kobe, Carmelo, Nene, and Camby. The wolves would have Foye, Davis/Jaric, Odom, Kenyon, and Bynum. Yes, I understand you’re saying, “Kobe? Denver????” One championship would erase all that animosity. The Iverson experiment in Denver will fail, the KG years in ’sota have essentially been a failure as well. If the lakers don’t significantly improve, Kobe could opt out of his contract in 2009 and then the lakers would be the clippers.
The only other options for Kobe are Phoenix and Chicago. Phoenix could package Bell, Diaw, Barbosa, and draft picks. Chicago would have to give up alot of what made them good in the first place.

Philly could make it happen…u give all 2-3 1st round draft picks (12, 21, 30) and someone like Willie Green who’s turning into a good scorer who possibly could get 2 about 15+ pts. a game and Kyle Korver who averaged 14 pts. off the bench and is 1 of the best 3pt. shooters in the league…it’s a long shot but since i’m a philly fan i wouldn’t mind having Kobe back home in philly.
