Links: Kobe On The Move?

And why Ray Allen can predict the future…

by Lang Whitaker

It’s Memorial Day weekend, so posting is kind of light around here, but I thought this one was worth getting up on the site.

What we do know is that Kobe Bryant isn’t happy right now. He, like many Lakers fans, doesn’t quite understand why the Lakers haven’t made more significant changes to their roster in an effort to improve.

And then things get really confusing.

According to ESPN’s recently slicked-back Ric Bucher, Kobe said if the Lakers don’t hire Jerry West and give him full control of the franchise, he wants to be traded.

But according to the LA Times, on Saturday Kobe said he does not want to be traded.

Not sure how to read this. If it was Jim Gray reporting it we’d know to take it with a grain of salt and assume that Jim Gray could have been duped on the phone by a Kobe imposter. But it isn’t Jim Gray reporting it. And Kobe hasn’t refuted it.

And as Linkstigator Jimmy Pierre pointed out in an email, Ray Allen saw this coming almost three years ago:

“If Kobe doesn’t see he needs two and a half good players to be a legitimate playoff contender or win a championship in about a year or two he’ll be calling out to Jerry Buss that “We need some help in here,” or “Trade me,” Allen said. “And we’ll all be saying, “I told you so,” when he says that.”

Prescient, that Ray Allen guy, when he’s not at WNBA games.

Anyway, will the Lakers hire Jerry West? If they don’t, will Kobe stick to his trade demand?

Hmm…wonder how Oden or Durant would look in one of those gold and purple jerseys?

Some how, some way, Kobe and KG need to play together.

May.27 at 9:36 pm

Drolfe says:
Didn’t seem like too long ago everyone was talking about the Lakers as championship contenders with their current roster plus Bynum with a few more years under his belt. I guess when they started losing people realised Kwame Brown and Luke Walton wern’t, in reality, good players.

Have Mutoni read this column. I think he had a lot to say.

Taylor says:
I hope kobe stays, like with all my heart… to fast to leave, bynum and brown are supposed to both be huge. KG needs to come to LA. Kobe, Odom, Garnett, Brown, and some pg doesent matter with bynum to back up brown.

May.27 at 10:25 pm

Kevin Wilson says:
Jesus spoke, and Kobe said to not put the dude in the same breath as him. The wrath is coming on Kobe … or maybe Kwame Brown sucks and that’s all there is to it.

Kobe is talented.

The Truth says:
Kobe doesnt take responsibility for his actions - see Eagle Rock, see Shaq - why would he threaten to leave LA now, after forcing them to trade the big man away….

shu says:
I think they need to make a move for Cherokee Parks. I heart smush parker, but he’s not good enough to lead a playoff calibur team. He was apparently on the outs with Phil anyways, so they’ll hopefully upgrade there. Vujacic is a decent back-up, but won’t be much better than the current situation. JKidd wasn’t really a long term situation anyways so I agree that move shouldn’t have happened. Jarvis Crittenton is a long pointguard for Jackson’s liking, if he’s available at #19, but he won’t help immidiately. Hmmm… I don’t think the team is good enough to attract a Finley/Webber type of veteran help off waivers. Not to mention how many guys actually WANT to play along side Kobe? I think he’s f$%d.

May.28 at 12:14 am

mutoni says:
kobe is just pushing buttons. he really wants the lakers to make big moves this summer, but with kupchak in charge, that probably won’t happen. guess i don’t really have much else to say, sesa. sorry.

Fadi Qader says:
Everyone knew that this day would come… He MUST have a few ballers aside him. He CAN’T do it all by himself. I am a Kobe fan myself…but the truth must be told. Just like the commercial says: “It takes 5″

May.28 at 12:37 am

Lang Whitaker says:
If Kobe realized it takes five, does that mean you were fooled?

May.28 at 12:38 am

Lang Whitaker says:
And by the way, I totally understand why he’d want Jerry West to come in and totally shake up the Lakers. After all, West really did some impressive things in Memphis. Er…

some how that shit won’t happen and Kobe won’t be traded

Drolfe says:
I think he wants West because his face reminds me of a teddy bear.

May.28 at 1:27 am

Russ Bengtson says:
I deleted my own post on this subject because I didn’t see this one. The way I see it, the Lakers have two options: if they think they can win a title with Kobe, then trade Bynum, Farmar and whoever else to bring in the pieces to win now. If not, trade Kobe now while he’s still got a lot of value and start putting more young parts together for the future. Whatever the case, standing pat should NOT be an option.

How about Kobe in a TWolves jersey?..KG is rockin 21, Kobe’s 24..put Stephon Marbury to bridge the gap….Im no Twolves fan, but I am a KG fan, so I know that that man needs alot of help..same case with Kobe, with KG, their game will only complement eachtohers

May.28 at 1:49 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Like the Lakers would take a package back from the Wolves that DIDN’T include KG? What, Randy Foye, Rashad McCants, Mark Madsen and every other first-round pick from now until 2036? No f-ing way.

May.28 at 2:10 am

Chris O'Leary says:
Two things: If I were Jerry West, I’d re-up with Memphis and trade for Kobe, if he’s so insistent on having the logo as his GM. 2nd, anyone else think that if Kobe had signed for a meagre 50 mil instead of 136 mil that the team would be in a much better situation cap-wise and able to bring in some more talent?

May.28 at 2:15 am

kobe to NY? imagine that!! quentin richardson, steve francis, jared jeffries for Kobe..

May.28 at 2:29 am

enigmatiK says:
what kobe needs is patience.Mj didnt start winning til he was in his 30’s.

May.28 at 2:49 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Yeah, Laker fans would love that deal.

May.28 at 2:54 am

Drolfe says:
Kobe would love that deal too, finally get a chance to play with a dominant big man and playmaking point guard.

May.28 at 3:00 am

Sesa says:
@Mutoni.
As a Kobe fan myself I’d rather don’t change the Lakers roster too much. I mean, signing Chauncey Billups will be good but I really think that they got a good core player when they are healthy.
Remember those 26-13 Start? Maybe you didn’t remember when Kwame Brown were so effective against Tim Duncan before he went down on an injury.
I’m really hoping to see what it’s like when they all 100% healthy, even Chris Mihm.

I think Ray Allen should predict something about the future hometown of the Sonics.
Anyway the Lakers is in a diffiult situation, if they don’t want to give up Bynum. I mean, who else worth something in that crew? How about JO to LA along with Billups? And the salary cap is crashing to the moon.
(But the best would be a KG-Steph reunion in LA - but I should wake up now)

May.28 at 6:21 am

Tom says:
As far as I’m concern, Kobe CAN’T BE TRADED, according to his contract. And You guys wrote about it 3 years ago, when he was signing his new contract with the lakers:>

May.28 at 7:11 am

Russ Bengtson says:
He has a no-trade clause, yes, but he can void it anytime he wants. No one “can’t be traded.” Except for maybe Jason Collins.

May.28 at 7:52 am

RedRum says:
If Shaq got traded, anyone can. Even Jason Collins…

May.28 at 8:15 am

Heri says:
Kobe is 29 next year and I don’t see the rings coming with that team. Who can the Lakers get in a trade with their roster? Nobody, or at least none who could improve what they already have. If Kobe wants another ring or two, he has to move from L.A., period.

May.28 at 9:01 am

KOBE…. Just believe in yourself or just do it! Kobe sucks. Jordan is the greatest of all time. Kobe would not be………..

May.28 at 9:45 am

Russ Bengtson says:
If the Lakers are serious about winning with Kobe, I think they should make a push for Jermaine O’Neal and maybe Jamaal Tinsley (who could use the change of scenery). Not sure what it would take to get the deal done (especially from a financial standpoint), but I’d think they could work something out. KG would be a tougher get, since I’m sure McHale would rather trade him East.

May.28 at 10:00 am

Marques says:
The reason why the Lakers have not improved is because they do not have the pieces to make a big move. Why would a team trade a great player for a so-so guy from the Lakers? The salaries can match all day long but you don’t trade great for average. If Kobe wants to win, he will have to go to another team and even then it will be hard for the Lakers to get equal value. Chicago comes to mind with all the young players but then they become the very team that Kobe left to make the trade work. Maybe straight up for Vince? Or maybe Corey Maggette and a few pieces but not Brand? That’s all I can come up with. Any other suggestions?

May.28 at 10:04 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Please God, don’t let the Bulls trade for Kobe. Thank you.

May.28 at 10:17 am

Michael Spand says:
Will Jerry West really change the problem in LA? I don’t think so. What does Kobe actually expect him to do that the current staff can’t do? http://www.squidoo.com/jumplikevince/

May.28 at 10:25 am

Goody says:
Had a teammate with Kobe’s mentality. He will cry about all of this but will he ultimately share the spot light with someone? Will he cut down on his shot opportunities? Share the ball? Take a lil’ alley out of his oop? I love Kobe as a player but his selfishness can wear on ya.

May.28 at 10:27 am

Goody says:
Ray Allen has a PHD in shotology so why wouldn’t he be able to predict the future man……

May.28 at 10:31 am

Hey, it’s offtopic I know, but did you notice, how the NBA store stole the undrcrwn design? Damn. http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/41SGxgGTBPL.jpg

May.28 at 10:31 am

Max Airington says:
Co sign on both of those statements Russ.

May.28 at 10:35 am

Darksaber says:
ha ha ha ha ha haaaaarrrrrrr. I can’t believe it, it’s beyond the realm of possibilities. The most egoistic, self possesed basketball player in the NBA wants out if they don’t bring back “the logo”? really? No effing way, right? Lakerville, how the mighty have fallen. So are we gonna blame Shaq for this development? Phil maybe?

May.28 at 10:39 am

Darksaber says:
And to Lebronovic. Thanks for making me notice the conference finals again, i was sleepwalking through the last 10 days until you decided to posterize the pistons frontcourt and drop fadeaway bombs last game. Keep it up, skinny Prince can’t really stop you, contain maybe, stop? Naah. And damnit, Flip Murray sure can sky can’t he? First on frigging Kirk now another jam of the week? nice.

May.28 at 10:42 am

Jonathan says:
kobe is a BETcat mark my words

May.28 at 10:42 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Um, the jam of the week was LeBron on Mr. I’ve Never Committed a Foul in My Life.

May.28 at 10:43 am

Russ Bengtson says:
And yeah, Kobe would LOVE playing in Charlotte. Right. Besides, given their salary structure right now they’d have to trade the whole damn team.

May.28 at 10:49 am

Tariq says:
Kobe to Phoenix for Shawn Marion and change.

May.28 at 10:53 am

Tariq says:
Kobe for Matrix… Everyone wins: Marion can prove why he should be more appreciated (or not), while Kobe can win seven more rings while averaging 81 ppg. Nice. Phoenix should throw in the pick they got in this year’s from Atlanta to sweeten the deal. Oh, wait–

May.28 at 10:53 am

Simon says:
yeh i dont really see McHale sending KG to the lakers. as much as i wud like to see it. Though Lamar and Bynum for KG doesnt sound like the worst trade ever…

May.28 at 10:55 am

Marques says:
That’s a good one Tariq. Maybe that “change” could be their 2 first round picks which they don’t truly need.

May.28 at 10:56 am

Simon says:
only way Lakers wud trade Kobe to Pheonix wud be if they included Amare AND Matrix (and prob Barbosa)

May.28 at 11:03 am

Tariq says:
Simon, And Nash. And D’Antoni. And the Grand Canyon. And the Cardianls. And Barkley’s house. Let’s be real, if a superstar demands a trade, more often than not he gets traded. And when a superstar gets traded, they usually, at best, get traded for 50-70 cents on the dollar. P.S. If I were Phoenix, the only way I trade Amare for Kobe straight up (not to mention as part of a package), would be if you stabbed me repeatedly in the kneecaps with an ice-pick. Kobe is the best player in the world, but Amare is a) younger and b) bigger.

May.28 at 11:07 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Kobe will NOT be traded to a team in the Lakers own division. No way. (In fact, I’d say there’s about a 1 percent chance he gets traded this—or next—summer at, period.)

May.28 at 11:11 am

Tariq says:
Ok, Kobe to the Spurs for Eva Longoria.

May.28 at 11:14 am

Tariq says:
That way the Spurs get more explosive and the Lakers get much, much more explosive.

May.28 at 11:24 am

Ryu says:
Tariq, I would like to see Jack Nicolson in that trade!

May.28 at 11:25 am

Don't hate me cause I don't watch Lost!! says:
A lot of Raptor fans have hated this deal, but I think it works out for both team…….Bosh for Bynum and whatever scraps it takes to match the salaries. I think it helps both teams perfectly, raps get a real low post presence, and Bosh plays the perfect compliment to Kobe, and it still sets the Lakers up for the future cause Bosh is what 22? Tell me thats not the perfect deal.

May.28 at 11:38 am

Tariq says:
No way i trade bosh

May.28 at 11:38 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Perfect deal for the Lakers, maybe. Since when is Bynum a real low post presence? Not yet he isn’t. And Bosh is an All-Star who’s gonna come back next year with a chip on his shoulder.

May.28 at 11:39 am

Heri says:
The Blazers should go for him! Hey, I could see them giving away Randolph and Miles for KB24. The Lakers would get two solid players. Odden, Roy, Kobe…and if he opts out of his contract Rashard Lewis…there you go, Blazers, 2008 champions!

May.28 at 11:46 am

Tom says:
I love Bosh as much as the next guy, but if the playoffs showed anything it’s that Bosh is just too small too be a dominating big man, but he’d be a great second option.

May.28 at 11:46 am

ForzaMilan says:
Question: Kobe mentioned that he wanted Jerry West to come in and save the Lakers. Isn’t this tampering, or are players immune from this rule because they aren’t front office people?

May.28 at 11:52 am

Tom says:
and Bynum will become dominating simply because he’d be in the east

May.28 at 12:31 pm

Mr. 416 says:
I like the Kobe to the spurs for longoria idea….imagine eva runnin’ around in little shorts gettin all sweaty. the lakers will STILL be standing around except it’ll be watchin’ eva instead of watchin KoBe. Toronto doesn’t want another crybaby we already had one mama’s boy we don’t need another one.

May.28 at 12:53 pm

Goody says:
Russ, I agree with u 100%. Kobe trade=Kobe to east coast team. That’s how its done. The Lakers don’t want to see him drop 81 every encounter.

May.28 at 1:02 pm

Tariq says:
Kobe to the East? trade him to Cleveland for Varejao and the 10th season of the simpsons DVD

May.28 at 1:04 pm

Tariq says:
how about kg to gsw for harrington, richardson, and 218 picks?

May.28 at 1:21 pm

kobe aint goin nowhere. plain and simple, jerry buss loves money and kobe brings in the f’n dough. kobe IS right tho, cause after the logo left kupchak aint been doin jack sh_t right. trading caron butler for kwame??? my goodness imagine caron STILL w/ the lakers. u wouldnt have all this talk bout who else do we need cause u would have another very good player there already.

Kobe on the move? What kind of a headline is that…Oh I get it….. to get people to read your column on a day that there is nothing else going on except a boring NBA run to the championship? Oh yeah…… game 30 of a 182 game baseball season…Are the Ducks still playing its been so long I can’t remember, and nobody cares about Hockey at least on the Left coast. Hey well you got me to read it…only to find the same regurgitated misinformation from ESPN…Scoop….Hoop…Etc…Etc…Etc….oh hey….thanks…

May.28 at 1:27 pm

D_vang says:
also kupchak passes on good young pf’s craig smith and paul milsap to draft jordan ‘i play just like sasha vujacic’ farmar???? wtf!!!! i thought u already had sasha vujacic and u draft sasha vujacic. personally nothin against vujacic or farmar (who i think will be decent someday) but u need bigs to win in the L not 8 guards and 4 kinda bigs. example t-wolves.

May.28 at 2:00 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
You realize you’re contradicting yourself, right? Kwame might play like he’s wearing two catcher’s mitts sometimes, but he’s a big. Caron, not so much.

May.28 at 2:00 pm

if kobe gets traded, its not to the bulls..but going to be to the raptors for bargnani, ford, and expiring contracts. book it.

» What’s the Deal With Kobe? - SLAM ONLINE says:
[…] Yesterday, ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher got everyone excited with a report that Kobe Bryant wants to be traded from the Lakers if they don’t bring back The Logo, Jerry West. Bucher’s report was strange because it didn’t come with a direct quote from Bryant; Bucher just said he had a “conversation” with Kobe earlier in the day. […]

Speaking on behalf of Pat Riley and Mickey the owner, Kobe for Wade lets make it happen. We might even throw in Wayne Simien he has great looks, perfect for the flashing lights in L.A.

May.28 at 2:46 pm

andrew says:
in response to ‘goody’, i highly doubt kobe would end up with the knicks. after all, why would the lakers want back nothing but overpaid bad contracts. and since kobe has a no trade clause, toronto would definitely be a team hed prefer to go to, something i cant say about the knicks.

May.28 at 2:46 pm

Stephen S says:
Unless there has already been some discussion by management about this, what a strange thing for a player to demand. For example, how does Kobe even know that Jerry West wants to come back to manage the Lakers unless he had already talked seriously with Jerry West about it?

kobe is not going anywhere… the lakers will either pull an steal-trade or splash out money for a free agent. I am not sure they will win a ring (if they get anyone else other than KG or O’neal). shu says:
Before Kobe’s ultimate decision, what do ya think the chances of Jerry West coming back are? I’m gonna say 10% this off season, increasing to 55% next off season and around 99% the one after that. Because the current GM hasn’t done enough to get fired yet… I think they have a chance at a ring in a few years, when Nash and Duncan are in their twilight years, if the Lakers are stocked they might be able to get out of the west. But then again, Oden, Durant, Paul and Deron will all be reaching their primes (should they stay with their current team) so like I said in an earlier post, I think he’s f’d. That drama queen deserves every bit of this. He may get up there on the all time scoring list but I doubt he’ll near another championship with the Lakers.

Eoin says:
OK tell me if this is crazy but I’ve been spending way too much time thinking about this for someone who has an exam tomorrow: Sonics sign-and-trade Rashard Lewis and the Durant pick for Kobe (with the Sonics throwing in some cap eaters because of Kobe’s RIDICULOUS contract - seriously, who NEEDS 133 million dollars??)Makes sense for the Lakers - they get to build around Durant and Bynum, and they’d have Odom or Lewis or both as trade bait to get some quality young ‘uns.Makes sense for Sonics - Kobe running with Ray Ray would save basketball in Seattle far quicker than Durant would, and Durant’s not gonna win in Seattle for a long time anyway.I’m not sure how Kobe and Ray feel about each other, but I’m willing to bet they’d put aside any differences they might have for the prospect of that team. And if they aren’t, well, trade Ray.

first of all, kobe denied demanding a trade. second, for all my fellow laker fans smoking the KG to LA pipe, forget about it. we are talking about kevin mchale here. if he helps the lakers build another dynasty, red auerbach would rise from his grave and bitchslap him. face it. no former celtic great will help the lakers. even when hell freezes over.

I say that we can’t feel sorry for KG anymore because he doesn’t feel sorry for himself. If he’s not smart enough to see that they can’t build around him, then his a** deserves to rot away! If he won’t request a trade we might as well stop requesting one for him.

How does KG for Nowitzki straight up work. Wolves get the MVP for their MVP and Dallas get a leader with some heart. Does Dallas get beat by GS if KG is playin this year. They get a real back to the basket player and Minna can start rebuilding round Dirk.

supremely offtopic, but did anyone else wish that the WCF Transformers of the Game promo had some shots of the Sternbot, T,Robot and AK-47 in their natural mechanized states? and is it too late to trade Kwame for Nene? Oh, wait I answered my own question.

May.29 at 2:35 am

Sko says:
most attainable, probably Chris Duhon, then sign Gerald Wallace and let Luke walk, more stable than Artest, more secure than Marion, clearly less talented than either. keep kwame, you can’t move him with the surgery now anyway. nobody’s going to trade a big who’s ready to contribute now for bynum - bring him along. Keep odom, he earned it. that’s enough to get out of the first round at least. and one dig at Kupchak… how good would you look if you were spending Radmanovic’s money on Derek Fisher? (solid defender, third leading scorer on one of those Championship teams, has Kobe’s repect) kept Butler, and had traded for a decent defensive big like Diop? I know shoulda couldas don’t help but dam.

Okay, can we clear the air - Kobe Bryant is not going to be traded anytime soon. As somebody said, it is just a story. He may have said something along those lines, but not even Kobe is foolish and/or selfish enough to walk away from the franchise that has bent over backwards to make him their star. Now I am a kobe/lakers fan. The biggest problem is we have a huge group of young guys and no veteran presence (kobe is not nearly enough). Package off Bynum, Farmar, Brown, Vladimir, and a future draft pick or 2 in return for JO & Tinsley. Then try for a play at Wallace or draft an athletic swing man (there will be one available). Oneal can play center, Odom at the 4, whoever they can get in free agency/draft (or keep walton), with Kobe and Tinsley. That team would get it done and the pacers have every reason to take it. The NBA is all about a mix of young and veteran talent developing TOGETHER

KG in L.A. with Kobe ? The Lakers would definitely become a serious contender overnight, but I really don’t see how that could possibly happen. McHale won’t let him go for peanuts. Who, in the Lakers roster, minus Odom, would be interesting enough to be involved in the deal ?

ok, lets get two things straight: Kobe is not going anywhere, and there is more chance that my 83 year old gramma dunks on AK-47 than McHale trading KG to the Lakers…

Kobe should be calling for the Lakers to hire Crumbs Krause as GM. He knows how to put together a team of nobodies to surround a superstar that Phil can take to a championship. And then Krause can fire Phil and replace him with Tim Floyd. Everybody wins.

Russ, I told you 2 weeks ago that your boy, KB824, will be looking at the Chicago skyline if all things go as planned. And today, “sources” said Kobe, would only approve a deal to just one team. Can you guess who? Read that in two different places including CNN.com. Do you boycott the team if he winds up there?

I think that either they should get a better roster or kobe should leave bacause i mean all they have beendoing is losing and they need to handle yhings carefully becuz if it was not for kobe they would not be where they are now.Its that simple.

And why in the hell would Pheonix make that horrible trade C-MAC? The Suns have no reason 2 make any deal what-so-ever with the Lakers because LA is NOT trading Kobe & the Suns are already the the kind team the Lakers want 2 be… a contender. Odom’s ONLY advantage is he’s a slightly better ball handler. That & 2 inches don’t make it worth it 2 knowingling downgrade their team 2 help the division rival Lakers. What Marion gives up in height 2 Odom he makes up 4 by being a superior player in virtually every statistical category his whole career. Get a clue.
I know a most of this talk is all conjecture & speculation, but could some of u folks at least know something, anything about the game & players u talk about before posting. One last thing… is it 2 much 2 ask that u include REALITY in your thought process at some point?
For many of u, it must be.
