Ready Or Not, Here They Come
Don’t pick Ohio State in ‘08.
According to ESPN.com’s Andy Katz, Ohio State center Greg Oden—along with fellow freshmen Mike Conley, Jr. and Daequan Cook—will officially declare tomorrow for the 2007 NBA Draft.
If all the freshmen leaving isn’t enough bad news for Buckeyes fans, consider that the decimation of the class of 2010 (despite the fact that Cook will probably not hire an agent and may return for his sophomore season) could possibly affect upcoming classes as well:
Ohio State is a quarter-system school and since NBA workouts with teams cannot begin until June 6 after the Orlando pre-draft camp the three are expected to remain in school. A final decision on their academic future will be made next week. Ohio State, like many other schools in a similar situation, is expected to push for the threesome to remain in school. Under a new NCAA directive, students who don’t leave in good academic standing and who aren’t eligible for the next season could end up hurting a school’s academic performance report and could subsequently end up in scholarship reduction for the school.
I can’t wait to see what Ryan has to say about all of this.

Ryan’s persistence about saying Oden would stay in school was like Columbus saying the earth is round, only if it were Columbus who were insisting the earth is flat and everyone else was saying its round.

I hope Daequan stays in school and gets a chance to show his ability next year. Dayton Dunbar’s finest!
I wonder how much of a role Conley “The Senior” had in this, since he is now an official agent… CHA-CHING!

One of Chad Ford’s traveshamockery drafts had Conley going as high as 9. And, now that I’ve cited Ford and Andy Katz in the same post, I think I’ll go stick my head in the oven.

I hope Conley Sr had a pretty big role, considering he’s the kid’s father and all.

I’m not entirely sure how the whole academic standing thing works, but it seems to me that it would end up being like an NCAA luxury tax. If you recruit a guy who’s definitely a one-and-out who doesn’t really care about school other than a mandatory stop on the way to the NBA (O.J., I’m looking at you), you may wind up using two (or more) scholarships on one player. I guess it’s worth it, though.

Cook needs to stay in school. He has not yet transformed into his full potential yet. If he gets one more year in him, he will be a great player. The most he will be in the draft is a second round draft pick. play wit it.
