Hey, where are my big men?

by Lang Whitaker

OK, late Sunday night, and a few things to mention. Let’s go series by series before you chatter away in the comments section…

We’ll start in the East, where there haven’t been a lot of close series…

EASTERN CONFERENCE
Detroit (4) vs. Orlando (0): Anyone surprised? Anyone? Orlando was really exposed as a shallow, overmatched team that needs to get a lot better. And Detroit basically got four intra-squad scrimmages to tune up for the second round.

Cleveland (3) vs. Washington (0): Much like they’ve done all season, the Cavs have sort of ho-hummed their way past a depleted Was Wizards. I’m still not convinced that Gilbert won’t play tomorrow night.

New Jersey (3) vs. Toronto (1): This Nets team has been confounding all season, playing hard one night, looking like they’d rather be at the Bing the next. But during the Playoffs, at least during games not the afternoon after Vince hosted a massive party, the Nets have been great.

Chicago (4) vs. Miami (0): What I thought would happen to the Heat during last year’s Playoffs happened this year. The Heat had no fire at all, and the Bulls took advantage of every mismatch.

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Golden State (3) vs. Dallas (1): Let’s start by giving the Warriors some credit. Last night they took everything Dallas could dish out, hung in there and then stomped the Mavs at the end. What happens now that the Warriors have the pressure on them? And what will it take for Avery Johnson to figure out that when he goes small against the Warriors, he loses? It’s pretty simple, right? I’m not a coach or anything, but check out the combined minutes played by Dallas centers last night. Wonder why the Warriors kept driving right to the rim?

And funny that Charles Barkley has decided to take on the Bay Area, since the Chuckster featured in the great NBA Superstars video, “The Warrior.” For a brief musical interlude, click here.

Phoenix (3) vs. Los Angeles (1): Kobe and Lamar are great and all, but good grief do the rest of the Lakers stink. Phil Jackson looks like he’s already making a mental list of things to pack to take to Montana for the summer.

San Antonio (2) vs. Denver (1): The Nuggets did their running and gunning thing in Game One, and since then the Spurs have put the smack down. And I loved Robert Horry’s explanation for how he stole a ball from JR Smith: “This is a time when you can go out and use your knowledge. I have been in the league for 15 years, and you tend to read situations because you have seen situations. I can read a situation where someone might inbound the ball and be a little lackadaisical and I have been watching J.R. play, and he does the same move every time, so I was able to get my hands on one.”

Utah (2) vs. Houston (2): The most competitive series of the first sound has also been the most gruesome, thanks to Houston’s now infamous “only four guys can score” evening.

I’ve slept on those last two series a little, but we get a double-header with them tomorrow night, and I’ll be tuned in.

Your turn…who’s going to take the chip home?

They don’t miss shots. Ever.

Dionisio says:
The Golden State vs Dallas game was UNBELIEVABLE…. baron davis is clutch baby. Hits the half court desperation shot to end the half and tie the score up 49-49. Then he steals the inbounds for the dunk to end the third.. ties it up 77-77. If you guys missed this game, you might’ve missed the best game of the playoffs thusfar. I’m glad i didn’t

Brian says:
The pereption seems to be that GS is using some gimick to get by Dallas. Dallas’ D is terrible. They can’t stop GS from getting to the hoop. Give it up Dirk, you’re horrible.

San Antonio & Detroit. Again. San An in 7. B. Diddy!

Dionisio says:
do you guys think that this series might change the minds of some writers that are going to vote?? i know its a regular season award… but this performance thusfar will be in the back of their mind. Doesn’t help Dirty Dirk out when Nashty Nash goes for 23 dimes..

IrvBX says:
baron davis showing why he is one of my favorite players, d-wade just giving up at the end with kindergarden turnovers, lamar odom what a move made me jump off the couch from a laying down position, nash mvp #3…yet nobody brings up how jason kidd got robbed twice when he is better than nash, yes i said it, jason kidd top 5 point guard of all time period, have more rambling but school in the morning lol

Apr.30 at 1:42 am

IrvBX says:
oh yea DETROIT PISTONS NBA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Apr.30 at 1:43 am

1hush D says:
GState missed shots tonight - even free throws and especially 3’s. But it is tenacity. Barnes and Pietrus (and as always, Davis) were the scrappers tonight. Remember, you cannot shoot the ball if you don’t have the ball. It is a beautiful thing………………… From another thread one of the posts suggested “too easy” for Baron’s nickname. That body guard shit is gone. And while I love my own creativity with Baronite….the deadliest element on the chart, “Too Easy Davis” is speaking truth to the situation.

Apr.30 at 1:44 am

ALX8725 says:
uhh… the “gimmick” is that they go small. Whoever Diop or Damp is guarding is a 3pt shooting threat so the center has to respect the shooting abilities of whoever they are guarding on the Warriors side. This leaves the paint WIDE WIDE open for our 8 athletic Warriors to drive to the rim at will. We know when to doubleteam Dirk (when: being the exact timing to double team Dirk) and renders Dirk ineffective. There is no “gimmick”, its called a gameplan.

Apr.30 at 1:46 am

ALX8725 says:
btw, LANG, will we ever see a Warriors/Mavs game recap? The Warriors Nation is really starting to believe that SLAM is boycotting the recaps. There hasnt been a single recap yet of the 4 games played?

Apr.30 at 1:50 am

ALX8725 says:
oh yeah, and the most important “gimmick” of all in the Warriors-pocket: they play defense. Just look at the stats if you haven’t watched the games, because if you watched the games you would have known the Warriors play GREAT defense.

Apr.30 at 1:54 am

tedturner says:
TOO EASY!!!! im so glad baron is healthy and in the playoffs, hes doing what ive been telling everyone he can do. irk nowitski is a choke artist. i love how the mavs were playing hot potato in the 4th quarter. tho stackhouse made me a lil nervous. irk cant possibly get the mvp after this can he??????

Sam Mitchell should give Nellie his award.

Apr.30 at 2:14 am

namik says:
Russ thats what people said about Nash last year. Let GS pick up that 4th win before we make any conclusions. Dirk does need to man the F up tho. Kobe too. I dont care how s***ty his teammates are. This is the playoffs and its time to pull the MJ act. Instead of questioning his teammates, maybe he should make more than 1 shot in the 4th. Lang I am dissapointed that you didnt point that out. Even as a Laker fan, I dont see why Kobe should get away with 2 crappy 4ths in 2 “close” games. He better be tearing them apart at Phoenix.

whooo! says:
it’s funny how dallas used to be a small ball team. they play san an n go small, n they can win. but they get out-smalled by g.s., and a.j. really has me questioning how smart of a coach he really is. it’s like a replay of flip n the pistons from last year:
flip inherits a team that’s a defensive monster, gets em to play better offense, goes on a record tear throughout the season, but he’s still a questionable coach in the playoffs w/ adjustments.
aj inherits a strong offensive team, gets em to play some defense, goes on a tear throughout the season, and now he doesn’t make the right adjustments, instead playing the way nellie wants him to play. now i don’t even know what identity dallas has. they’re not a good enough defensive team, and w/ diop, damp, buckner, george, they end up 4-on-5 on offense. dirk’s somehow gone from mvp back to being SOFT and weak minded like 2 yrs ago. he’s still mvp though if it’s regular season award. if it was playoffs, b-diddy deserves it! but has there ever been an mvp who received his award AFTER he was eliminated?

dma says:
GS is playing scrappy ball. nelly just GIVING it to cuban and johnson. will the real jason terry please stand up? marquis daniels, anthony johnson or darrell armstrong, guards that can actually create something on their own and HUSTLE, look better than austin croshere’s ass sitting on the bench being worthless right about.. now.

Apr.30 at 2:45 am

whooo! says:
oh yeah, fellas, i completely forgot pretty much the entire writing staff picked dallas to win the chip this year in your last mag! y’all gotta start doing the predictions online, when you actually know the matchups, to save yourself the troubles next time. so dallas finally gets over the hump last yr to make the finals, then choke away a 2-0 lead. this year, they choke away the best record in the league and a #1 seed. they outdid themselves in choking! they can’t top this next year.

baron davis for mvp? why not? hed have my vote

I can’t wait to see what Mark Cuban will do over the summer, will he blow the whole team up and try make a blockbuster deal, Garnett? Or will he stick with this bunch for one more try at the chip?

thats why russ should be president

Apr.30 at 3:22 am

uamini says:
Jackson on Nowitzki: “We’re not doing anything that everybody else hasn’t done, but we’re just having some success.”
The question remains why Dirk is struggling that much though, I still believe it was a mistake to cut his minutes as much as Avery Johnson did in the final games of the regular season. Nowitzki tends to be a bit rusty when he’s had extensive time off and at his best when he plays a lot of minutes.
But if he does end up getting MVP and the Mavs lose the next game, it’s gonna be a rough next season for him, just imagine how much he’ll get ridiculed every game.

Apr.30 at 3:24 am

James says:
Im not even going to comment on “what Dallas will do over the summer” until they’re actually out. Id love GS to beat them but im not going to count them out until it happens!

Apr.30 at 3:53 am

WeS says:
I’m not staff (yet?) but I picked Phoenix too. Also, GSW/DAL is like the greatest thing that could happen to the league. I’m glad Stern isnt rigging this year’s calls and trying to set the stage for a “superstar” to carry the league. With that said, I look for a finals match up between the two deepest teams - Chi/Phx. That is unless of course, Lebron becomes “made.”

Apr.30 at 3:54 am

whooo! says:
dallas hasn’t given much reason for us to count on them though if history proves right. they were up 3-1 against san an last year and couldn’t seal it until game 7 in ot. this against a team who had their number for years before. then they were up 2-0 against miami before choking. they’re known for regular season success, but the mavs don’t come to mind when thinking of resiliency in the playoffs. teams like detroit (2 yrs ago) & miami (last yr) were about back to the walls, pulling it out to force comebacks. dallas has just been choking, so i really have no faith in any comeback from them. you look at the body language and teh faces of the mavs compared to the warriors and you know they lost it. they’re outta swag!

Apr.30 at 3:57 am

whooo! says:
yeah, n i’m posting online at damn near 4am! i got a college research paper due today which i shoulda been working on, but i tuned into pretty much the entire 10pm game & inside the nba. the playoffs are gonna kill my grades…

HANDS DOWN best quote of the night goes to Barkley (who came out at halftime with a DIRK JERSEY on!)— “Golden State sucks as a city”

Apr.30 at 3:59 am

Bozaframa says:
Classic — oh and shoot me now if I have to keep listening to Dick Stockton and Reggie Miller call Warriors games. Seriously.

Apr.30 at 4:14 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Listening to Reggie Miller pronounce Andres Biedrins’s name is an adventure. I think he’s still feeling it out.

Apr.30 at 4:34 am

whooo! says:
did reggie still goin through puberty?

Apr.30 at 4:38 am

irv says:
My theory is that dallas came into the playoffs with the wrong mindset, coasting all the way. The warriors literally had to dig down and fit for every game, they wouldn’t be here if they took a day off at all. They’ve been intense and focused for the last 3 weeks, and it’s paying off with their play in the playoffs so far

Apr.30 at 4:54 am

Bizzle says:
Stephon Jackson has Dirk looking shook right now. It seems like he is flailing and stumbling a lot in this series.

Apr.30 at 5:07 am

Hersey says:
Steve Nash: 23 dimes, mostly for layups and dunks. He and Amare were pretty amazing today. The Dallas/GSW game was the best of the playoffs so far. I think Dallas needs Avery to be a player/coach like Bill Russell. They seem to have no leader on the floor.

Apr.30 at 5:20 am

maclovenotwar says:
yo Lang, Horry’s steal was *definately* the turning point in that game. no one was hitting shots until that Spurs steal-to-the-dagger-three, and then they followed it up with another one! denver played well, but the spurs woke up and it was over. Gummo was taking too many shots he shouldn’t have. *down here in Perth we get near-to-no game coverage, but my girlfriend has cable at her parents and she watched this one with me.

Apr.30 at 5:22 am

Sesa says:
Robert Horry sounded like Phil Jackson. GSW will “probably” won the series against Mavs, but I’m not so sure about the next round.
Utah/Houston will slaughter GSW.

Apr.30 at 5:48 am

seppo says:
There are so many players who don´t really turn it on during the regular season. Then in the playoffs it really shows who the best players are. With the exception of Kobe, Baron Davis is probably the most gifted and clutch player in the NBA. If the Mavs lose, look out for Mark Cuban to sell the franchise and Nowitzki being traded. In spite of his immobility and lack of versatility, there still will be a few teams who will take a gamble on Dirk.

Apr.30 at 7:05 am

That’ll be Nash for MVP then…

RedRum says:
I pick SA, TD is on a mission this year, plays the best D he ever played. I also think Cuban will blow everything up, how about a KG - Dirk trade? oh, and one last time… the lakers need to get Artest!!! only Jax can sort him out, and a team with KB, Artest and Odom (and a better Bynum) is really freakin dangerous!

Apr.30 at 7:22 am

Drolfe says:
Yeah man, a few bone head teams will take a chance on Dirk and his 25-9-4. Come one people. It’s 3-1. Don’t you watch TV? This has happened before. Lakers/Suns last year. Magic/Pistons a few years ago. This thing is not over. You honest don’t think Dirk and the Mavs have it in them to win the next three games?

Apr.30 at 7:41 am

me says:
Phoenix!

Apr.30 at 7:42 am

Tariq says:
It’s not yet over and done with. I’m hoping GSW win, but if Dallas takes Game 5, then they’ll probably win the series. As for Phoenix, I think they will really struggle if they play San Antonio. If they can get by the Spurs, it’s their title to lose, but I don’t think they can do it. Somehow these Pistons, relatively under the radar, remind me of 2004. I remember Lang complaining about how the Pistons-Pacers East finals that year was so boring, and how the winner would get blown away by the Lakers. From what I’ve been reading, this year’s Detroit squad is generally regarded as a one-eyed team in a blind East, but I have a feeling Webber will finally get his ring come June.

Apr.30 at 8:05 am

IrishPaul says:
Dirk is the Mvp? Can anyone tell me with a straight face that if Kobe had the same level of talent which dirk is surrounded with that the lakers would be 3-1 down to this golden state team? no matter how well they have played.

Apr.30 at 8:41 am

Shotcaller says:
Lang -
Excellent reference to “The Warrior” video…I remember watching that at Summer Basketball camp my freshmen year.

Apr.30 at 8:50 am

deestarbuckz says:
Crazy how every big bucket that Dallas needed to stop or start a run came from Stack or JT… WTF? Dirk wouldn’t call for the ball, or demand an iso. I won’t get on the “Dirk sucks” bandwagon but he isn’t as aggressive. He seems as if he has regressed from the attack the rim, use the mid-range game and open up the rest Dirk of last year. Now he is settling on the perimeter just because someone is actually in his face. Credit to Nellie and the Yay Area Warriors for deciding to punch first… Mac Dre is smiling somewhere.

Apr.30 at 8:54 am

deestarbuckz says:
And I told ya’ll that game 3 of the PHX/LA series was an abberation! STAT came right back and put his PE Nikes in the whole Laker frontline a$$! The whole Kwame lovefest comes to an immediate end and reality bites! Sure all of Miami has a case of the Monday’s right now… add some flare.

AB_40 says:
san antonio I think will take the chip.
david stern should make another adjustment. 10 teams from the west and 6 from the east. I red that in an article somewhere and it kinda makes sense. you know cuzz the east sucks ‘n all

Apr.30 at 10:13 am

shu says:
which “expert” chose HOU in five games?? I sure did read an article saying how much DWill is slept on but I guess not everyone takes advice from their own magazine. (I’m looking in your direction Mr. Emry DowningHall) HOU might have 2 superstars but their bench is more atrocious than I expected. Even if they get 30 pts each, where is the rest of the scoring coming from? Howard has nothing left in his tank. Skip should be hitting more shots than this. Hayes? Head? Bonzi might have been the difference in this series should Houston fall. Both teams are relatively inexperienced, so homecourt advantage might be the difference in the series, considering each home team won the first four. If I were to pick which team will steal one away from home, I’d say Utah, especially if AK plays help D as well as he did. They just left everybody except TMac and Yao alone, and they didn’t make em pay.

I hope the heat or the Mavs are not on the next cover of Slam.

Apr.30 at 11:00 am

Andres David says:
All I know is that Steve Kerr is straight tripping when he goes on his “oh this game is boring can I leave right now” show. When you decided to be an announcer they should have given you a list of stuff not to do. I mean its cool to be honest, but its disrespectful to each team’s fans, and also to the network that is giving you money. At least keep the illusion that the game features the best athletes in the world. Steve has great columns but he should leave that holy I’ve played with Mike attitude at home. Marv Albert did his thing though.

Apr.30 at 11:08 am

Noyd says:
I think Deng is going to be a superstar in the L. He’s got one of the best mid range games in the league. Once he develops a post game, which he should, he’ll be practically unstoppable. Thoughts? Oh yea, Dick Stockton is terrible. He repeatedly missed calls and was saying the dumbest ish. They need to get Bill Raftery, the best in the game.

Apr.30 at 11:18 am

Orlando says:
omg I am loving watching Dallas get ripped!

Apr.30 at 11:20 am

Ron says:
The Bulls-Pistons series should be great. Will Ben Wallace be a factor with Rasheed playing on the perimeter more and more? Will C-Webb be able to do anything on the boards agains Big Ben? There are mismatches on both sides so it all comes down to who can take advantage.

Apr.30 at 11:20 am

Zee says:
Drolfe, you are killing me. I see you just dont want to accept the unavoidable. So tell me, what do you know that dirk doesnt know? He clearly stated if they didnt win game 4 that the series was over. Dallas cant win in a track meet with the warriors, and they cant win when they slow it down and try to go halfcourt. It’s a wrap.

Apr.30 at 11:23 am

I don’t know why kobe is playing so horrible. Only 32.5pts 5.5rbs and 5.5 asts on 49% shooting from the feild 40% from three 93% from the line. Yup he’s playing horribble. Idiots. Phoenix is just better plain and simple. Lamar is great and he makes Shawn Marion look like a bitch but two players can’t beat 10.

Apr.30 at 1:22 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
The staff predictions were made as the Mavs had just won something like their 16th in a row as part of their 3rd 10+ game winning streak already, if I remember right. And their 17 game winning streak was snapped by Golden State. But uh, yeah. This is very shocking. Cuban should have sold the team like he said he wanted to.

Dirk is the mvp…of the regular season. BDavis is MVP of the playoffs thus far. I don’t think you can say Dallas is doing something to give the warriors the win anymore. The warriors really have that nothing to lose, constantly aggressive attitude that is extremely effective against any team. I’m just curious how far GSW can go with this wave of momentum.

[…] But Johnson has opted instead to bicker and feign an attempt to rile up a team that has been outcoached as much as it has been outhustled in this series. Johnson has consistently ignored the calls from every member of the common media – both local and national, from Charles Barkley to Lang Whitaker – to play commonsensically. Instead of employing the rotation that won his team a decade-best 67 games and a Southwest Division Championship, the Mavericks coach went with a futile attempt to cater to Golden State’s tempo. […]
