Doc Rivers is going to be extended

Not bad for someone who had an 18 game losing streak

By Sam Rubenstein

Great work Boston Celtics! Rewarding a coach for getting his young team to play hard and win games, when by winning they are actually trying to repeat the not getting Tim Duncan scenario. Well done, Celtics. It’s not official yet, but it looks like the extension is coming. Isiah is still going to be coaching the Knicks after my time here on this earth is done no matter what happens, so its nice of the Celtics to play along. Philly has Larry Brown waiting in the wings, despite the denials which you can’t trust. They do seem to go through a coach per year, so it’s possible they could stick with Mo Cheeks for the sake of stability. Lawrence Frank was on thin ice for a while, but the Nets organization doesn’t seem to be upset with him in any way. Sam Mitchell is a coach of the year candidate, which in a world of A-Rod walk off grand slams and Peyton Manning Super Bowl MVPs, actually makes perfect sense.

Who is going to be the first coach from the Titanic Division to lose his job? What kind of losing will that take, and how bad is that guy going to feel when the axe swings down? I am convinced that these 5 men will be coaching their current teams until at least 2012.

Great work Doc! You got over on Ainge just like everyone else. I applaud you.

One…I guess Doc gets a chance next year w/ Durrant or Oden, that is until he gets fired in December.

I think Lang (or someone) mentioned this the other day, but where’s all the media hate for Larry Frank? Wasn’t his team supposed to be pushing for the Eastern Conference title?

I think that Doc deserves a fair shot with a healthy team. Peirce on the outside and Oden and Jefferson on the inside would be real scary. Mo Cheeks will get fired this offseason, mark my words.

I miss the days when Boston was relevent, just like I miss the days I thought Bassy would have been a great point or just had any hope for him

I hope all the good college players return another year to fuck up Memphis and Boston.

Still counting the hours until an epic Bill Simmons meltdown…

I am concerned for Simmons well-being after this. We chose not to respond when he briefly mentioned SLAM negatively in a recent blog post. This is his karmic payback. I do have to admit I laughed out loud at this line from today though: “When LeBron James hosts the “ESPYS” in July, should we expect him to mail in the first hour of the show and then turn into Chris Rock during the second hour?”

I liked Mo and Doc, but damn they’re hurting the prospects of really good black coaches. Neither one has been successful as a head coach, and I hate to say it but if they were white they’d be fired by now. The Net’s give Biron Scott the shaft over some bullshit, and Boston doesn’t have it in them to show Doc the door…go figure.

Doc’s brain type must be off the charts.

Do you think Paul Silas deserves another coaching gig? Which other past NBA players are currently assistants?

sigh, fine, keep doc, fire Ainge.
It worked well for the Raptors this year.
of course finding a good GM is almost as hard as finding a good Coach.

all these comments seem to assume that Doc has ever had a team that should have won something and that the team failed because Doc was the coach. That is laughable. No coach could have taken the roster doc has had over the last two years to the playoffs. In every case, even the C’s playoff loss to Indiana two years ago, the blame should be placed squarely on the players. Not sure why everyone misses that. As Barkley always says “they lose because they aren’t any good”. No need to get fancier than that.

WTF!?! Did the Wyc turn into James Dolan overnight!? At least the Knicks were within a mile of playoff contention. Sure, the Celtics have been killed with injuries this season, but Doc has never posted more than a .500 season and never helmed a deep playoff run in his coaching career. Shouldn’t that be the measure of a coach?! His game management & lineup changes killed any consistancy the club might have had early in the season. I don’t know… Maybe the Lottery was the intention all season… That’s the only way this makes sense…

Not only was Doc coaching a team that lost 18 straight, but he was also the coach of that Magic team that lost 19 in a row, getting fired along the way. He seems like a nice enough person though.
Interesting that this news came out yesterday and now Durant is declaring for the draft. Hmmmmm…

This is just ridiculous. The worst division in basketball and nobody is in line for a pink slip? And I just don’t see LB coming back to coaching yet - maybe next season, because Mo and the Sixers are doing a lot better of late. Smitch simply has to be coach of the year, too, regardless of how many times I joined in calling him lame duck.
