Player of the D.A.Y.
Might as well get it out of the way before lunchtime
60 points by one NBA player is not normal. Even against Toney Barone and the Memphis Grizzlies. Even if we look past the 65 followed by the 50 and just treat this as a stand alone game. Kobe is making the Player of the D.A.Y. very redundant. The numbers from last night were 20 of 37 from the field, 3 of 7 from three, 17 of 18 from the line, with 4 assists and 5 rebounds.
Okay, I can’t resist looking at the past three games as a body of work. Here’s a screen shot borrowed from yahoo.

There’s other stuff going on, you know. Amare had 33 and 21 against the Kings. Luol Deng had a big game against Denver. Ohio State walked along the razor’s edge again.
Kobe has put all of that on the back burner.

Kobe-50 in the playoffs? Not if they are playing the Spurs. The Lakers might not get much more than that each night. If they drop to the 7th and get the Suns? Affirmative.

Best backhanded compliment heard at water coolers today: “Yeah, he’s the best scorer in the league, but he’s not the best player”. The objects of the game is to score more than your opponent. The best scorer is therefore the best player. Kobe is pulling away for Player of the Y.E.A.R. honors with 7 P.O.D.s now.

Reggie, by your logic, if Melo finished strong enough to lead the League in scoring, even if it was by a fraction of a point, he would become THE BEST PLAYER in the NBA… just want to make sure you realize what you’re saying.

John from Miami says:
The best player is he who helps his team win games, and with a 35-32 record Kobe is far from the best player. Compare him to; let’s say… Steve Nash or Dirk Nowitzki. Those are some of the best players. Allen Iverson has a superior career PPG average and isn’t considered the best player the NBA has, and Kobe is???
Good players help their teams win …

Reggie Evans says:
I’m just trolling, Ryan. You can’t just score, the other team has to score less than you as well. The best player generates the most points for his team while preventing the most of the opponent’s points from materializing…. so is Shaq the best player? Duncan, maybe.

Outside of the few recent games without Wade, Shaq’s been more kerosine than diesel…though I’d NEVER tell him that…after all, you don’t have to be the MDE to still be “frickin” huge

There are so many criteria to consider as far as this best player thing is concerned. a MAJOR and probably the most important contributory factor to that best player argument would be scoring ability. after that would be player’s ability to prevent the opponent from scoring. the next would be team involvement. team involvement doesn’t necessarily mean putting assists on the board, but operating within the game plan as orchestrated by the coach. it’s the coaches job assess what the team needs from it’s respective players and it’s the player’s job to meet those needs within the scheme of the coach’s game plan. So a coach may want one player to score, while he may want another to rebound, another to pass, etc., or he may want any number of his players to share all those responsibilities. Next criterion would be W’s. Is this player a winner? does he go above and beyond the call of duty to maintain a state of readiness to do what’s NECESSARY to win. A sub-criterion (did i just make that up) of that winability (i def made up that one) would be how clutch a player is. One’s ability to put the ball in the bucket, get that key steal, own that board or hit those free throw down the stretch when the team needs it most. these are just off the top of my head. There’s SO much that needs to be considered before we haplessly throw that Best Player talk about.

what impress me most about those statlines is (besides the ridiculous shooting %) his turnovers. 8 freaking turnovers in 3 games. you could make a case that he wouldn’t have time to turn the ball over coz he just launches shots right when he got the ball, but then i’ll tell you there were countless times melo has that many turnovers in ONE game.

Hersey says:
Kobe is great but the Lakers suck right now. 60 nets a 2 point smackdown of the Grizzlies. 65 destroys the Blazers by 5 in overtime. 50 demoralizes the T’Wolves by 7. I’ve only seen pieces of these games. Are his teammates taking pictures of Kobe or actually trying to win these games?

Dblizzy! says:
albie, 8 turnovers in three games for someone with the ball in his hands as much as Kobe is not really that bad.
If you’re talking about the best individual basketball player in the League, it has to be Kobe hands down. I’m not talking about all the intangibles and all that other team oriented stuff, just the flat out most talented player, in my opinion it’s Kobe.

The best player is a guy who plays with 2 All Stars and the best roster in the NBA but gets all the credit for his team success… and by the way plays no defense. This MVP thing is a joke, Kobe is the best by far…

If anyone saw the full game last night, somewhere in the 3rd quarter, the crowd started going nuts! Lamar Odom was Shooting 2 free-throws, and the crowd was creaming like crazy, and not because of the game on the court. High above the action, someone thought it would be a good idea to play the tennesee game on the jumbo, and it got the crowd more pumped up than the game itself! The ref’s eventually asked the scorer’s table to take it down, but no w/o boos from the crowd. Meanwhile, the Lakers momentum kepts getting broken up, and they went something like 1/4 from the free throw line while that happened. So to answer your question Mr. Bryant Reeves, Yes, Kobe does hate NCAA, because those bastards were messing his team up!

albie1kenobi says:
Dblizzy, that’s exactly my point. for someone who had the ball in his hand that much, having only 8 turnovers is simply amazing. i have melo, yao and zach on my fantasy team, so i know how rare it is for a dominant scorer to have so few turnovers.
i just simply think that, like him or not, it’s basically not even debatable that he’s the best player in the league (read: world) right now.

Billy Blanks says:
Yeah albie, I don’t even know how ppl can question who is the best player on the planet right now. Kobe is obviously and by far the best player, even the league’s players and coaches know it
