Is Durant Serious?
He can’t be, can he?
I think we can all agree on the fact that Kevin Durant is one of the most promising ball players in the world. You know the details: arms that go on forever; practically unlimited range; creates problems on both ends of the floor; is one of the reasons why this year’s March Madness is not to be missed; has received a slurp job from just about every media member that follows basketball; and might go first overall in the draft.
On Monday, D.J. Augustin, Durant’s freshman point guard teammate, said something potentially earth-shattering. For a few NBA GM’S, anyway.
[D.J.] Augustin also said that star freshman Kevin Durant has told his teammates that he’s coming back.
“But Kevin’s a humble guy, so he’s probably going to say he’s coming back whenever he’s asked that question,” Augustin said.
I think Danny Ainge just swallowed his own tongue.
Now, the question becomes: Is this for real? Would Durant risk major injury (and millions of dollars) by going back to college for one more year?
Even though Durant has yet to publicly address his teammate’s comments, I’m choosing not to believe any of it. I don’t care how much fun he’s having in college, or how well his team does in the tourney; his stock can’t go any higher, and what more could he possibly have to prove on that level?
But, you never know…

the risk of injury is just so great, but i understand “having fun in college” cuz i had a blast. but ask me if i would trade that for about 10 million and what do you think i’d say?

He might mean to come back now, but just wait until after the season when 10,000 agents get in his ear giving him advice.

It would be pretty funny if no top freshmen came out this year and completely ruined all of Chad Ford’s work.

who’d be more devastated by this? ford or ainge?

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m sure Danny Ainge has some other kid lined up who has the same brain type. P.S. It would be extra funny if this entire freshman class decided to stay in school for four years to protest the age limit. Yeah, it wouldn’t make any financial sense, but it would be fun to see how dominant Durant could get. Not to mention a 37-year-old Oden with two working arms.

Mike says:
Maybe Oden and Durant are just making up this “maybe we’ll stay in school” stuff to mess with Ainge. Remember the last time the Celtics tanked a season to chase a dominant player in the draft? They were tanking to get Duncan. Remember how that worked out?

Russ Bengtson says:
And actually, Chad Ford’s probably psyched, because the more college kids that stay in school, the higher a bunch of foreign guys no one but him know about go.

whooo! says:
speaking of which Mike, the ripple effects of that one season and missed draft have had resounding effects. case in point, timmy d has never lost a game to the celtics! how more demoralizing can it get to not only lose the pick but for the guy to kick your ass yearly like it’s a clause in his contract. kevin durant, shaun livingston’s knee was the perfect example of why you take the money kid! you never know what will happen in life, so it’s best to sign a deal worth more than the majority of graduates could ever dream of in their life.

You know what’s interesting about this year’s draft? Gre — oh, um, never mind.

But YO, how ridiculous would it be if neither of these guys came out this year? Would Bobby Knight finally apologize for something? Would David Stern rethink the age minimum? Would I look even smarter than I already do? Alas, none of the above even seems possible. If only…

Russ Bengtson says:
If neither of those guys declare, I’m entering.

Vitor says:
So, Ryan, if both Durant and Oden go back to school does this year’s class go from one of the best ever to one of the worst ever? I mean, no team wants to draft Noah or Brandan Wright first overall, right? OK, perhaps Billy King and McHale do, but you get the point.

if both of those guys don’t enter, stern will probably force jordan to come back

Vitor, I’m not sure if two really, really, really good players equal an all-time great draft, but yeah, it would most definitely take a hit.

I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I too will be staying in college for another year. I know what you all are thinking: Is he crazy? His draft-stock has never been higher. Regardless, that is my decision, and i’d really appreciate it if the media would refrain from making such a big deal about it. Thank you. That is all.

thats what those tanking NBA teams get. its no way for a professional sports team to tank and put their fans through a tanking season. is there a single team that purposely tanked and were successful? when the celtics tanked for timrobot, the good guys won in the end (San Antonio) the basketball gods see all and punish thee. also, karma is a bitch.

James says:
The Spurs kind of tanked that season they got Timmy anyway ALX856747563. Yeah the Admiral was injured, but they didnt exactly clamour for him to come back did they? And because of that, they screwed my beloved Sixers into getting KVH. and then Larry Hughes next year over Pierce / Dirk? Sickening. Thats why i hate the Spurs.

But i should probably hate the Sixers themselves for being such idiots really.
