Why don’t we care about Steve Francis?
I know I don’t.
It appears that the Knicks are about to buy out Stevie Franchise. It sounds like he’s injured or something. Does anybody know? Have you ever seen a guy go from being a superstar to falling off this hard into irrelevance in such a short period of time? Did Bruce Bowen end his career? Vin Baker seemed to lose his skills when he couldn’t overcome his alcoholism. Shawn Kemp is sort of in that grey area, but he still had great numbers in Cleveland. Good buddies of mine like Roberto Alomar and Carlos Baerga just weren’t built for the pressure. But Steve Francis? What happened?
He was traded with Cuttino Mobley for McGrady. At the time it seemed like Orlando Magic were losing their identity for about the 8th time and getting robbed in a trade or by a departing free agent once again. In hindsight the obvious was true. Francis had a great first half teaming with Grant Hill, and he finished that year with numbers 21, 7, and 6 with a rookie named Dwight Howard developing. The ‘05-’06 season was just weird, with Steve toning his game down to let Dwight Howard do more and then eventually he snapped, and after a suspension for insubordiantion, they shipped him out cause they didn’t want him around anymore. But this was a player that until last season, basically put up 20-6-6 at the bare minimum every year. With Yao and Jeff Van Gundy in Houston, he took fewer shots and dropped to 16 ppg as the Rockets went to the playoffs. In their one win over the Lakers (the Karl Malone team) he put up a 27-9-7.
He was traded that off-season, and now look at him. He never even had a chance with the Knicks. It was a ridiculous trade that everyone knew was stupid at the time, and may or may not have been the result of an Isiah-Larry Brown power struggle.
He hasn’t done anything for the Knicks, other than give the Magic cap room. I don’t think anyone even cares that he’s in the NBA. Is he? What happened?

Karma’s a bitch, for sure. This is the same whiny little jagoff who sat his crybaby butt out because he didn’t want to play for Vancouver after they drafted Francis at #2 overall in 1999. At least he’ll have plenty of $$$ to lean back on, which, apparently, is all he can do these days…..

This really is a spectacular dropoff … that’s one of three Isiah moves I’d take back (the other two involving the JJ’s). For all the crap people give him, most of the others have worked out (assuming they stay out of the lottery and/or their pick is anywhere close to Chicago’s).

I remember Francis was killing people for the first half of (I think) his last season in Orlando, just dunking on anyone. Then he’s traded to the Knicks and became a hobbling question mark. Would Cleveland take a chance on him?

Another shining example of front office mismanagement by the NY Knickerbockers. What could have possibly convinced Isaih, Larry and Jimmy Dolan that the team needed ANOTHER petulant point guard whose first instinct is to shoot? If he goes, he goes, who cares? Nothing personal Stevie Franchise, you’re just another example of Knickerbocker roadkill…signed or traded for a ridiculous amount of money with little to show for it in the end.

And as for Francis, I forgot about the Cuttino comments when he was traded like “How am I supposed to wake up in the morning without Cuttino.” How irresponsible of me.

All Mobley jokes aside Stevie Francis was the truth when he came into the league … If you saw him this season he looked a step slow and about 15 pounds of muscle lighter… Anyone recall that article that came out during the summer that had him swearing up and down his game was back on track? I actually believed it. Three seasons ago Francis was as valuable from a fantasy perspective as J. Kidd because of his rebounding ability….

Steve Francis had/has a wicked handle. But despite averaging 6+ assists for his career (i didn’t look that up, so cut me some slack if I’m wrong) he’s an over dribbler and can’t really run an offense. I’m sure some other team will give him a shot, and if not he’d make a nice addition to the and 1 tour.

Favorite francis moment: Last season, raptors vs knicks, mike james go up for a break away layup, francis is trailing, times his jump perfectly, and SWATS it off the back board. it was NASTY. The ball must have riccocheted back to half court. Mike James hasn’t been the same since.

say what you want about the Knicks Mgt (Which I hate more than any of you guys), but ON PAPER…Francis (20-6-6) and Marbury (Only person since Big O to average 20-8 or something) would make a ridiculous backcourt. A little undersized maybe, but so was AI and Eric Snow.
I have no explanation for why Francis dropped off so badly. but if all things had gone as planned, Francis/Marbury would’ve been something to see, if they could both play their games.

I think more than a few teams will at least take a chance on him. Lakers and Cavs obviously, but Pistons do need back-up PG and a “buckets” kind of guy. If Minny makes a push to the playoffs. He can help any team, if he’s willing to mold and if he’s in shape. Two things that I doubt. The Knicks situation is f’d up to begin with. I read here that LB brought in Francis so Marbury would be expendable. BECAUSE THEY DO THE SAME THINGS!!! No way they can both stay on the floor together. I guess it turned out the Marbury manned up to take a hit in his numbers and W’s for the team. Francis… Just sits and weaps, like the b#### he’s always been. No way you were ridding Starbury from the Knicks. I guess what Francis is doing now is putting up the least effort possible to earn a paycheck? It should have been like the Tim Thomas situation last year in Chi at the beginning of this season. Knicks lead the league in bought out contracts don’t they? Make sure he either goes west or stays home entirely rather than help squeeze NYK out of tha playoff race.

I hate Alomar MORE because of how good he was with Toronto/baltimore/cleveland and San Diego. I went to a yankee game once where him and Vizquel turned a double play with the bases loaded that was… well that was probably the only infield that ever could have made that play.
Francis still has his explosive moments. I mean, I don’t think he’s dunked this year or anything like that, but um… he did block a Jameer Nelson shot from behind last week (before giving him a very awkward man hug from behind, walking him from the baseline to the free throw line).

The Marbury-Francis pairing was a complete chemistry nightmare from the start, and I don’t think anyone with any idea saw much chance of it working. (I also think plenty of people, including me, hate the Knicks’ front office so much it’s hard to beat.) Some team that lacks backcourt scoring will certainly give him a chance, and it might even work out.

Since we’re all talking about Francis and Mobley, the game after the Knicks played the Clippers (Francis sat out for it), the Knicks had a Meet-The-Team event. And i actually brought up Mobley. conv went like…
me: so your boy Mobley played yesterday
Francis: well, he played, but he didn’t really play
me: oh yeah?
Francis: Yeah, he didn’t make a damn thing
me: you know if he had made anything, the knicks would probably have lost…damn tim thomas.
fine, i didn’t say that last line, but i thought it real hard.
and yes, i would agree that francis will reunite with mobley in LA. they’ll run across a beach towards each other in slow motion. Ameachi for sure!

Justin says:
I too wondered about the Mobley/Francis friendship.
I remember when they traded him he said in the papers here that he didn’t know what to wake up for anymore, or something along those lines. Shaq called him out at the All Star Game last year and said that Orlando should trade Franchise because D12 needed the ball and not someone who just dribbled all the time. He was great when he first got here to Orlando although he didn’t want to come. “Sissybrod” (as TMac called him) basically traded for him because Francis wanted to get into a fight with someone during a game once. That would be great if the NBA changed to hockey….. Maybe with DWade out Riley will go after him. Don’t know what Shaq will say about that. Maybe a return to Houston? Probably not likely either. I know, the LA CLIPPERS!

yeah the clippers really need another point guard. totally. sam cassell and shaun livingston aren’t enough. he’ll go to the lakers, that way he can help a playoff team who desperately needs a PG (sorry smush), and still be in the same city as his man.

Russ Bengtson says:
Y’all sound like a bunch of Timmy Hardaways sometimes. I think a LOT of Stevie’s problems can be chalked up to the knee, which is apparently really, really bad. When he HAS gotten a chance to play this year, he’s still the Knicks best inside scoring threat for a perimeter guy (a MASTER at the and-1 layup) and that’s with pretty much zero percent of his explosiveness. Francis and Marbury were NEVER going to work together (who’s supposed to guard the opposing two?) and I think if he ever heals, he’ll be able to show people a thing or two.
Feb.26 at 6:52 pm
Drer says:
Russ, you do know the Cat/Francis comments are jokes. Right? Ever heard of sarcasm? Geez, the first time Ms. Mobley does anything on a basketball court that is PRODUCTIVE will be his first. Yes Ameachi!

Young C says:
Wow. Its a shame a guy with so much talent and so much potential has come to this in his career. It seems like ever since the Magic traded Cuttino for an over-the-hill Jackie(and Doug) Christie, Steve just lost all of his passion for the game. But then again, Jackie Christie is enough to make any man wanna give up.I feel sorry for him. I kinda have a soft spot for Steve because my uncle coached him in high school in Silverspring,Maryland.I went to one of his basketball camps in 2000 and got to meet him and take pictures with him. I know some coaches say he has attitude problems, but he had a really rough childhood. His mom died when he was very young, and him & his brother basically raised themselves.Even though hes gonna make enough money to probably never work another day in his life,I really hope this isnt the end for Steve because he was a really great player.Maybe if he is bought out the Cavaliers will take a look at him, because even if he is injured, Steve Francis at 75% is better than Eric Snow or Damon Jones at 100%. Either way, keep ya head up Steve. To me you’ll always be The Franchise.

Will Lee says:
Francis and Marbury and Crawford are the same player. Over dribbled, sick handles and quick shots. they need a style like the Warriors to at least have some effect. Francis is a beast athletically, but he is at max a good scorer. He was named the next Iverson coming into the league and was an all star starter. (!) Now, a lot of teams would want him. Cavs, Hawks, Heat? or even Spurs?
Feb.26 at 11:45 pm
Mike says:
Steve can score on any and everybody when he wants to. The only two things stopping him are: 1)himself and 2)coaches. I’ve seen Steve do some nasty things to guys on the court and they can’t do anything but foul him. Coaches don’t structure their offenses to compliment his style of play (except for Rudy T). As for those who say he dribbles too much, go to the East coast and tell that to all of the ankle breakers, where he (along with many other NBA stars) learned their style of play.

Phila says:
The Franchise is down, but not out. Remember his seasons in Houston. He led them in points, rebounds and assists. Hes only a 6-3 guard and he was leading rebounder among all NBA guards. Hes a triple dub threat everytime he steps on the court. He has a good resume and once hes healed he can once again be the Franchise. He’ll be back. Trust me.

Now we just wait for the Suns to sign him… I mean seriously, Tim Thomas, Jalen Rose - they build their bench around players that have been bought out, especially ex-Knicks! He’ll never be ‘The Franchise’ but he can still contribute…

LordGefroh says:
just another guy who got hyped up too much before he actually did anything (read: WIN). I heard he was pretty badly injured. the L is filled with guys that can jump out of the gym, what makes you great is the motivation to do what it takes to WIN. I guess stevie doesn’t fall into that category. He can be a decent bench player on some teams, but his best days are long gone.

Tuomas says:
You know the worn-out phrase “you’re only as good as your last game”? Well, make it at least about 20-30 games and it’s very close to being true in the NBA world. My point being that from day one, Stevie’s image was that of a grade A knucklehead. When a guy like that loses his touch as he lands in a bad situation, there are not many people in the business feeling sorry for him. I can’t help it, but his situation really reminds me of Mickey Rourke. Not to say Mickey lost his acting skills, but he just went way over the top with his craziness and bit the hand that was feeding him one too many times. Not to say the consequences were right, but he was still blackballed. If Francis doesn’t regain his mojo fairly soon he’s in danger of being out of the league. Not too many veteran role player/good influence roster spots left for him.
Feb.27 at 1:57 pm
Boyd says:
The Suns would never sign him because he is a ball-stopper. If he just took spot up jumpers and cut to the basket and comitted himself to NEVER dribbling the ball, he would be awesome for Phoenix, another Barbosa. But if the knee injury is bad, then oh well. He won’t be missed. I remember the ASG in ‘02, he started, and couldn’t score, just forced it and kept missing. Not a great player but could have been a good two-guard for someone. But really, in the post-jordan era, the swarm of slashing/athletic wings getting by on athleticism and dribbling has been nauseating. perhaps karma is removing a superfluous example of this damaging trend.

Speaking from an Orlando Magic fan perspective, the Francis deal was sooooo stupid. But the Magic had a GM at the time who also traded T-MAC….think about that. The dude (John Weisbrod) was primarily a hockey guy, so this 5-on-5 was way out of his league. Even after that trade, Cat Mobley struggled, but who would’nt struggle after seeing their best friend get sent away? Bottom line, Steve is the modern-day Rod Strickland, who is so nice on the court, but never seems to fit in anywhere. I’ve always been a fan since he was at Maryland, and have never understood why he can’t be a perennial All-Star.

The problem with Steve is that as good as he was, his game never evolved. I will never forget Shaq vs. Yao part I…everyone was waiting for Shaq to kill Yao or for Kobe to destroy Cuttino, but Steve stole the show with a 44 point, 11 assist performance for the books. After the game, the commentators said the same thing I was thinking…”We may be witnessing the birth of a superstar…” Only problem was, the newborn never matured, never learned, never gained a greater understanding of what he could truly do when he put his mind to it. Now the once future star is washed up at the ripe ol’ age of 30 because he is still trying to get by with the same tricks of his youth.

francis next year=baron this year. wherever he ends up next year he will revive his career and make the allstar team. he never tried on the knicks cuz he didnt fit in, and his last half-year in orlando he was in a dispute with the coach/management. he isnt over the hill, still has a good 5 years left in him, and isnt really injured. these last two years have just been a terrible situation for him, but he is still good enough to be a top 5 allstar pg like he was 2 years ago. his first year in orlando was the 05 season and he had the best year of his career, everything has been a bad situation since then but he still has all the talent and skill that he had before, and next year if he does end up in la, or back in houston, or wherever… he is gonna resurrect his career and be a top 5 pg in the nba once again. all you hating now werent saying that a few years ago when he was an allstar, and he will be again because he is good. and once youre that good it dont just go away unless youre seriously injured, or old, and he is neither. he just hasnt tried/been in a terrible situation for the last two seasons, but he will be back. theres at least 10 teams in this league that need a point guard and would definitely give him a chance, and he would fulfill there need as one of the best pg’s in the league. also marbury will have a breakout year once he’s gone and the team is all his once again, wouldnt be surprised to see marbury puttin up 20 ppg and 9 apg once again as well once hes given the keys to the knicks vehicle.
