Tim Hardaway Hates Gay People

No, really!

by Marcel Mutoni

Tim Hardaway, speaking to columnist Dan Le Batard on his radio show Wednesday, showed why the NBA (despite what the commish would have you believe) is probably nowhere near ready to accept an openly gay player. And he managed to do it in exceptionally ignorant fashion:

“First of all, I wouldn’t want him on my team,” Hardaway replied. “And second of all, if he was on my team, I would really distance myself from him because, uh, I don’t think that is right. I don’t think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room.”

No, go ahead, Tim. Tell us how you really feel:

“Something has to give,” he said. “And I think the majority of players would ask for him to be traded or they would want to be traded. Or buy him out of his contract and just let him go. Something has to give. If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that are upset and can’t concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court it’s going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate.”

You don’t say. Well, Tim, what if this player was a superstar talent?

“If he were that great something would still have to give,” he said. “People would feel uncomfortable with that. If you’re not gay, nobody in that locker room would feel comfortable with that person on your team.”

I see.

What’s that? You have something to add? By all means:

“You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world or in the United States.”

Tell you what, Tim Hardaway: I’m just going to head over to YouTube and watch you shatter some ankles, and pretend that none of this is real.

(Link: Miami Herald)

(UPDATE: Tim apologized after the radio show: “Yes, I regret it. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that,” he said. “That was my mistake.”)

Whew! Glad that’s over with. Moving on…

Just for the sake of piling on, here’s a little bit more Hardaway for you:

-If you thought Timmy’s apology was legit, well, I’m sorry. He’s still the same blithering, hateful idiot.

-Props to Sports By Brooks for digging up a rather amusing link to an Outsports.com article from 2001 listing the “Ten Most Likely Gay Ballers in the NBA”: They ranked Tim at #7.

-Word is that Tim Hardaway is going to be in Vegas this weekend, which is just about the most amazing thing ever.

-Here’s a link to video of Tim enjoying some quality time with the fellas in the locker room. HMMMMMMMMMMM….

(Hey, Sam Smith: I put that together while fully clothed. Eff what ya heard, old man!)

That’s crazy, I live on the west coast and i used to crawl out of bed for the Knicks/Heat playoff series just for Tim Hardaway. Does anyone else think Lamar Odom is gay, or is it just me? Especially in street clothes

Damn… I wish things like this were a nonfactor. I’m having flashbacks of the HIV paranoia surrounding Magic. Sounds like Timmy thinks he would get raped if he played with him, although… I was pretty sure Amechi didn’t rape any teammates.

Whooops!

Nando says:
Hardaway may have been a great basketball player but he’s got alot to learn about civility. It’s ironic that an African-American is guilty of the same hatred that was shown to his ilk back in the ’60s and ’70s. You’d think he’d learn something from history. That is, if he went to history class to begin with.

Wow. Tim makes Shavlik Randolph look like Boy George. Hardaway’s Wikipedia entry says that he once dressed up as the cop from the Village People.

Gloria Lloyd says:
Wow. I used to respect him! Now, I can’t. I’m sure that will be a lot of people’s reaction. It’s too bad, as he was always a member of the NBA I liked and appreciated. Mark Cuban was right: there will be more of a backlash against those who say anything against a gay NBA-er than the gay NBA-er himself. I’m sure Tim has played with gay players before, and he’s so ignorant that he didn’t even realize it. They’re not going to be any different than other players in the locker room or anywhere else. What an idiot, I’m sorry to say. Since many players have already said that they would have no problem with a gay player (Grant Hill, etc.), Tim is obviously full of BS and just speaking for his own prejudiced self! 50 years ago, you could easily insert “black” or “Negro” for “gay” in his comments and you can just see how prejudiced they actually are. Jesus, who loved everyone and taught love and forgiveness towards all people, would not appreciate Tim’s sentiments, either.

Feb.15 at 2:12 am

Toronto says:
People say hateful things when they are crazy upset, just ask Michael Richards. On a serious note Tim’s comments were asinine, ignorant and just downwright cold. He basically called for the a genocide on gays. Is this OK???!?!?!? Get real Tim. Where you confronted by a gay heckler during the radio show? I have no respect for you Tim….not anymore.

Poopship Destroyer says:
Society, including myself, still has a long way to go though - because while Timmy’s comments are obviously ignorant, absurd, hateful, stupid, etc., I kinda laughed when I heard it on TV because it was just so stupid…. Now if he said he hated Hispanic people, for example, I’d be shocked and I wouldn’t laugh…. I consider myself the anti-homophobe, but do you get my point?

Feb.15 at 2:24 am

Kyle Stack says:
Doesn’t it make sense that he apologized after he said that stuff? Every athlete always does that. I’m just waiting for him to say that he was misunderstood. How will this make Stern feel about the image of the NBA now? Hardaway, as a recent NBA retiree, could be the voice for how many other NBA players feel – although I hope not.

WOW…did not expect this..wait there is always someone who is an ignorant son of a bitch.

Feb.15 at 3:02 am

Those are some horrible remarks. The apology sounded really half-assed, like it was an afterthought. And what’s with the “something has to give” garbage? He’s only sorry that he said it, that he made it public, but he’s not sorry for feeling that way. Disgusting.

Feb.15 at 4:30 am

Toronto says:
Tim is an idiot and should lose any position he holds with the NBA and/or broadcast companies……after all many of the people he dislikes are fans of the NBA. Why should gay people and the people that accept gay people tolerate TIM on TV or as a rep. of the NBA when TIM is a HATER. You may be able to speak your mind in the USA, but let it be known that if a celebrity or public figure directed their hatred towards a group of individuals becuase of their race, ethnicity and/or religion the public would be screaming bloody murder. Tim next time save ur breath, because it WREAKS U U DAMN BIGOT.

Feb.15 at 5:03 am

German Reignman says:
It wasn`t ESPN, its Tim that is making Tim look like a d…. MAybe he would be ok if a gay teammate would come up to him and tell him he is not his type since he is a 5`4 ugly homophobic mf ?

Feb.15 at 5:09 am

Shaun Thompson (British) says:
It just goes to show that ignorance is universal. I bet Hardaway would be the first person to comment if someone said “I hate Black people”. Race and gender may be different but the principles of ignorance, prejudice and discrimination are not. Well done to Amechi for bringing all these ignorant people out of the closet.

Froggiestyle says:
Hey, it’s a free country and personally I feel really good that Timmy expressed himself so freely and openly. It really takes the pressure off me when I go on record and say I really can’t handle playing ball with a player who is openly black - you know that black lifestyle, black clothes, likes black music, engages in black sex. I mean it’s ok to be black, as long as you act white. If not, don’t be surprised if you get, traded, ostracized, etc…. Good point Tim, way to keep the hope and movement alive. Nucca please.

Feb.15 at 7:51 am

NAS says:
Tim is free to say what he wants, he has earned that right, and he doesnt need to apologize or nuthin, at least he was honest, you can agree or disagree but dont call him a dick - froggiestyle check posts on farmar outro cuz what you just said was not a good comparison at all

Feb.15 at 7:58 am

NAS says:
btw on an unrelated note if yall think chris paul and jason kidd are good do yall remember what timmy was like when healthy - when he was healthy and john stockton was healthy he was considered the BETTER PG of the 2 - respect to tim bug said what you want its a free country, ameachi said what he wanted and timmy is doing the same big whupp

Jill says:
Well, from where I sit on Tim Hardway’s comment about gay people. In my ten years of being around men - I haven’t met a straight man that cannot be had by gay men. Like they say, “They are only a six pack away from being had”. All of his ranting and raving sounds like to me that he is just scared about being around gay people. But God forbid some white people say they do not want to be around black people or do not want to play on a team with “black” people and that is concidered racism. It is all the same - Ignorance breeds ignorance. And for these days and times for a black man to sit in judgement of someone is just IGNORANT.

A guy that’s desperate for publicity (pros vs joes, aba career after nba) going on an espn radio show to talk about an issue put forth by an espn book and talking with the kind of tone that gets your name on espn? no way.

1hush D says:
Maybe Sternbot agrees with Tim. Now that he has players dressing the way he wants and speaking the way he wants, as well as, leaving their guns at home, maybe he wants to tell players who they can or cannot sleep with. Who needs a constitution anyway. Ok to disparage gays - not ok to criticize an official for a call. Wow, what a fun country we live in. Smell the hate. NAS, hang in there. You are learning, it is just a very slow process. Free speech is great except when it used to yell “Fire” in a crowded theater, to threaten someone’s life, or for hate speech etc….like Michael Richards and Tim Hardaway, you get the point. “Both teams played hard”

Feb.15 at 10:11 am

Ryan Jones says:
I can’t hate on Brousard’s take, because I know for a fact that he’s a really good dude and very, very committed to his religious beliefs — and not AT ALL in a hateful way. I’d say that’s the first intelligent piece of dissent I’ve read in all this, actually.

Tim used to have a nightclub in Miami called “Hardaway’s”. It was the happenin’ spot for black gay night life. Ironic, no?

Feb.15 at 10:57 am

Sparker says:
i find all of this mildly hilarious, including broussard’s theoretically enlightened take. he seems to be saying that he disapproves of homosexuality but not homosexuals he knows personally; maybe we should find some more gay people and introduce them to him. he also mentions that muslims don’t approve of gay men; but does that mean he approves of their tolerance for men who kill their wives for leaving them? anyone who lives in a major city (which obviously excludes some of you crackers) has regular contact with gay men and women. being gay is not their “lifestyle choice.” it is who they are and have been their whole lives (which the latest medical research supports).

Feb.15 at 11:05 am

Ryan Jones says:
I’ll stick up for him because I know him, Sparker: Broussard is just being honest. He’s a devout guy, never in a holier than thou way that I’ve seen, but he’s got his beliefs and sticks by them. There’s no hate in his game, and in his mind it’s not a question of “disapproval” as much as he lives his life by a book that tells him homosexuality is a sin. I don’t agree, obviously, and you can certainly make a really, really (really) strong case against taking the Bible literally… but I’ll avoid that one here. And since not all Muslims are wife-killers, that might’ve been a stretch on your part; his point there, obviously, was that Christianity and Islam share an (implied?) belief that homosexuality is a sin. But, whatever. You and I are probably philosophically identical on 99 percent of this sh*t. I’m just saying, if Chris’ response was the most ignorant one we’ve heard, we’d be in pretty good shape.

Feb.15 at 11:09 am

MILITANT says:
Wow, well he really proved that he was homophobic based on the response and tone he used when he made that ignorant statement. Why would he even assume that anyone would be watching him “specifically” in the locker room anyway! As a masculine black gay male I have preferences and its not “every” man that i see and its not always sexual. If I were in a locker room sitaution ( as I have been numerous times before… ) honestly I am not looking around at people because for one its a respect thing to yourself and your teammates, secondly I am there for the same reason my teammates, not to man watch. If I wanted to man watch I would do that on my own time, not with my co-workers !!! For the record Mr Hardaway you are not eveybodys type so stop thinking its all about you man. Most straight men,not all give themselves to much credit in that department anyway. At least be attractive or in shape before you go screaming you don’t want anyone gay around you….lol.God created man and he knows all, sees all……If God didn’t want gay people in the world “trust me we wouldn’t be here ” and with people like this idiot Hardaway who would intentionally choose to be gay unless thats who they really are. Lastly,it’s funny how people hand pick things from the bible that are sins “The bible says”……..and they use the scriptures to supress a certain group or persons but when its comes to them personally and the sins they have committed they aren’t so quick to reference the bible or the bible isn’t even though of in that instance. One sin doesn’t out weigh the other. This almost sounds like “THE MANS” point of view about blacks during the Civil Rights Movement and even still today. Sorry I had so much to say but this got under my skin….

Feb.15 at 11:25 am

Matthew says:
Not only do I agree with Ryan about OJ Mayo (kid is still the truth) I also agree with him about his comment. I just read the Brousard piece and I couldn’t agree more with what he had to say. Being a Christian myself, I believe that homosexuality is wrong and it is a lifestyle that someone chooses. However, as a Christian, the Bible tells you to not to hate anyone, but to hate “sin”. And according to the good book, homosexuality is a “sin”. I’m not trying to preach to anyone here b/c believe me, I’m not perfect. I have my own faults and downfalls too. And as for medical research, if you look hard enough, you’ll find research that, for lack of a better term, “goes both ways”. You’ll find research saying ppl are born gay and ppl who aren’t. It’s just like evolution. Some scientists say it happened others say it didn’t. On topics like these, instead of putting each other on blast, we have to just agree to disagree. And, by the way, I disagree with what Tim Hardaway says but the fact Brousard draws a fine line between disapproving of homosexuality and homosexuals is very clear to me. In the end, I think Chris wrote an excellent article and I’m a cracker that does not live in a major city and do my very best to love my neighbor as myself, no matter the race, sexuality, gender, etc. This topic has brought about some very intense dialogue and I respect everyone’s opinion although there are some that I disagree with. And that is what makes America great. No matter what kind of opinion you have, you can feel free to express it. If I feel the same way, great, if not, we’ll disagree and move on. And Ryan, Kobe is the best player if the L. Sorry to disagree!!!

Feb.15 at 11:30 am

Ryan Jones says:
When did I say Kobe isn’t the best player in the League?

Feb.15 at 11:59 am

Matthew says:
Let’s just say you said that for arguments sake and we disagreed. That was the point I was trying to make. We all won’t agree on everything all the time and homosexuality is one of many things people will debate and discuss and disect. We all have our own opinions and sometimes we agree and sometimes we don’t.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let people know that this is how I think. Now I just made my millionaire life a little more difficult than it otherwise would have been. Feb.15 at 12:16 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Did you just say Kobe’s gay?

Feb.15 at 12:19 pm

Matthew says:
And Sam, if you take out the part (about playing in the aba and pro’s vs. joe’s), your comment could be very well mistaken not for Tim Hardaway, but for John Ameachi. But thanks for the link on the article.

Feb.15 at 12:23 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Matthew, seriously, why do you think Kobe is gay?

Feb.15 at 12:27 pm

Wait a minute, are we just going to disregard Cheryl’s post about Timmy’s club? lol How funny (in a damn he’s an idiot way) is it that he was posing with Sheryl Swoopes like minutes before the comments?

Feb.15 at 12:46 pm

Matthew says:
No, sorry for the misunderstanding. I never said Kobe was gay. I was saying for arguments sake that you said Kobe was not the best player in the league and I was saying I thought he was the best player. Again, my apologies for the mix up. I think it’s safe to assume that we all know Kobe isn’t gay.

I don’t buy Bousards argument at all. His moral basis for judging a gay friend on something that does not impact Brousard or others at all is irrational. Trying to slip out of the race or religious belief comparison is specious on his part and frankly, I think I may respect Hardaway with all of his ignorance more than I would respect Brousard’s hypocrisy and his “what a great friend who I morally condemn” attitude. I am sure to regret that statement. I blame their/your gods for all of this.

What makes this admitted homophobe so sure that any gay player would find him to be such a prize? If the other players are “upset and can’t concentrate” how about being a professional and leaving your baggage at the door - no matter what it involves? Additionally, since when does Hardaway get to speak for all other players? Nice role model.

Feb.15 at 3:00 pm

albie1kenobi says:
why is this surprising at all? we live in an age where everything has to be politically correct, because it becomes a PR nightmare otherwise. i’m not sure why this doesn’t anger me but Ted Haggard’s “cure from gayness” and Mark “I molest coz i’m gay” Foley pissed me off big time.
the more interesting question now, instead of how many NBA players are gay, is how many players feel the way that Hardaway does. we of course will never find out the answer because, those two groups are scared of each other and the PR nightmares.

Feb.15 at 3:00 pm

true says:
Is this the good ole U.S.A or what? Say what you want about Tim’s comments but the reality is I bet a large majority of players do feel this way. It’s just an ego thing if your in a lockerroom and you look up and see a teammate that you know is openly gay looking at you, not because your cute, he just happen to look up at the same time you did, what would your true reaction be? Another thing Barkley played with people he assumed were gay. Did they come out and admit it to him? No! Trust me there is a difference.

i think he had the right to say what he said, I dont agree with it, plus it was a little extreme but Timmy might be speaking from a religious point of view…at least thats what i hope..Also saying you “hate” a certain type of harmless people is pretty ignorant.

Rick Kang says:
How can people mention “science” and “religion” when talking about homosexuality? Religion is whut you believe — with little to zero factual proof. Science is based on hypotheses, which must first be proven before being considered true. The point? Religion is ruining peoples’ lives. Instead of just thinking about something (or someone) rationally, one’s “beliefs” have to be taken into account. This freedom of religion thing has morphed into a freedom of idiocy/ignorance thang…. Chris Broussard isn’t a bad writer — likely not a bad guy — but why let some thousand-year-old book written by men (not god) tell you whut to do? He seems smart enuff — why not think for himself on this one? Timmy’s comments were weak ultimately becuz it made an unfadeable baller look ignorant and hateful: Ignorance, 1. Tolerance, 0.

UTEP should be ashamed of schooling someone who still speaks english like it’s his second language - what were those SAT scores anyway? I wish he wasn’t washed up and were still playing so he could get an elbow to the jaw from one of the closeted gay players still in the NBA. Oh yeah, it’s statistically impossible for there not to be more. No chance of them coming out now thanks to retards like hardaway.

I hate how everyone turns to the religion to back their stance on homosexuality. I don’t know, nor do any of you know, what is and isn’t divinely inspired by God and what is or isn’t written in response to that society. The Bible, and every other religious book was written by men, and if today someone were to write a book that was “inspired by God” or claimed that “God wrote it through man” then we all would look at the author or authors as crazy. It is unfortunate that with all of the evidence that is being found in science about this particularly controversy and how there is much evidence to back that one’s sexuality may in fact be part of one’s genetic make-up (although it hasn’t been proven, it has not been disproven either, and there IS a lot of evidence backing that theory so far). It is just unfortunate that we as a people can be so ignorant to the world around us. Even if every word in the Bible or whatever religious book you believe in was true, if Adam and Eve were the first two people created and that humans were made from sand, and if homosexuality is in fact something people choose and that it is not something that they are, I think that from a humanistic perspective it would only be right to accept others for who they are and live life… No wonder so many people are so shook to come out and be real with others about who they are. I feel sorry for them because it seems that living a life in secrecy would be a fate most cruel. It’s like Joseph Conrad wrote, “Who knows what true happiness is, not the conventional word, but the naked terror. To the lonely themselves, that wear a mask, the most miserable outcast hugs some memory or some illusion.” However, I feel just as sorry for all of us who are each ignorant in our own ways and have trouble accepting others truly as they are. It shows that we have a long way to go before we can ever consider ourselves to have truly met our full potential as a society.

Just cause he is homophobic that makes him ignorant? Really?

Fuck me. What a tit. First of all, the most obvious comment is; can a team full of white european players ask for a black guy to be traded because he makes them uncomfortable, and then justify it by saying ‘what’s the problem? i just hate blacks?’ Acceptable? I think not. Disgusting? I think so. Second of all, it must fucking suck to be that stupid, I’ve just re-evaluated my life and now consider intelligence to be more of a gift than dribbling a basketball. And thirdly, fair play to all those who have said ‘what’s religion got to do with it.’ For fear of being as offensive as timmy (though not as ignorrant) Who needs lessons from a book 2000 years old? It used to be legal for Roman men to a**rape their male slaves when the ‘good book’ was written, which should prove the the values of the time aren’t quite applicable today. Also, the ‘good book’ was used to justify human slavery in general for millenia. God damn. I doubt Kobe is a bender, but Gilberts ‘overcompensation’ in what is obviously is a massively homophobic world is an interesting theory…

Second of all, from a foreigners perspective, it is people like Hardaway (but mostly Bush) that give America its bad name of generally being a land of ignorrant half-wit f*cks who cause many more problems than they solve. I know that’s not the case, but more people hear Tim Hardaway than me. Lets get him in the ring with my fellow Britisher Amaechi’s 6′10 270 and watch him take Tim’s head off. Though I don’t think john would go for that somehow.

DP says:
When I first heard this from Tim Hardaway, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I have loved Tim all my life and I always loved watching his crossover. Tim was like an role model to me. But this is where I have to disagree with him fully. What Tim said is just why America is so messed up in the first place. Yes, I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if you don’t have anything nice to say, then just keep it to your damn self. Tim is not sorry. I know he isn’t because if someone talks about gay people with that much hatred, anything apology that come out of his mouth is a damn lie. If I was Amaechi, I wouldn’t accept it. Tim should have just left it alone when the guy asked him the question. Instead, he let his emotions get the best of him and he exploded. Tim cannot do anything to stop gay people and neither can I. He just has to accept that fact of life and live with it. We do live in America right? The best country in the world where in our constitution is says that we are all equal. I don’t agree with what gay people do, but that does not mean I am going to treat them like trash and commit hate crimes. I would treat Amaechi like anyone else, with respect. That is all I ask for. If you respect me, I will respect you. More and more people are coming out of the closet because they are tired of hiding and I would damn well be like they would. Who even cares that Amaechi is gay? No one does! So why even worry about it. Tim should just shove his comment up his ass because he wouldn’t have even gave a damn if he found out that Beyonce was a lesbian and was dating Halle Berry. PLAY WIT IT.

A lot of Christians are just as dumb as Tim Hardaway when it comes to topics such as these and I agree that these “non-educated” Christians throw flames on the fire. But it’s not like the Bible should be discarded b/c it’s old. I’m not trying to argue religion with anyone, but the Bible tells you to love one another. These so-called “Christians” who don’t understand that and are “gay bashers” are just ignorant. Like Michael Richards was ignorant. Or Mel Gibson was ignorant. We’ve got to forive them and go on. Treat others how you want to be treated and respect one another. Just b/c I don’t agree with what you do with your lifestyle doesn’t mean we still can’t be friends or be cool!!! Regardless of skin color, sexuality, whatever, if you treat me with respect then I’ll do the same for you.

He looses me by apologizing. If u feel uncomfortable wit that shit SAY IT! Don’t come out wit that p.r. shit…be real. I respect that above EVERYTHING ELSE. If u don’t agree with some shit, let it b known if u aint a coward. I don’t have a problem with gay’s as people, but why is it ok for gays 2 come out and not the decenters. And don’t give me that race shit either cuz racism is a far bigger and historianically greater issue (I think I just made up a new word….HOLLA). I love me some SKIIIIILLZ. And I’m all for activism. So I respect each person for being so adamant about their views. All I can say is “‘live and let die”. Do u and don’t hate….this message has been brought to u by u’r friends here at G.T.P. Old School Baller says:
The whole scenario is much ado about nothing. First of all, I barely remember John Ameche. It never did anything of note in the league. Secondly, Tim Hardaway is retired. The media made this a story. They blew it up to try to get someone to take the bait and get a “beating”. I did not think someone would go for the okie doke but Hardaway was silly enough to go for it. Now they are dragging his name through the mud and the NBA are distancing themselves from him. Also, given the fact that he is African American, this gives someone the carte blanche to imply that black people are prejudiced so it is okay to (i) discriminate against them or (ii) make racial slurs towards them. This whole scenario was the media attempting to create some drama and now they have a former pro athlete to give it some sizzle.

Feb.15 at 10:54 pm

this is not shocking. there are many homophobic people especially in the black community. i am black. pesonally i have no problems with gays but i dont like certtain aspects of their lifestyle. no one can change the way he feels. that may be something he should have kept to himself though. many people probably feel the same way but they just feel that the would be out of place openly saying that they hate gays.

Tim Hardaway just became my hero!!!!!!!!! Yes, Timmy just opened the door for anyone in the NBA to come out and say shit about these fags. Personally, I hate queers, and if I could, I would put em all in a hole and light those suckers on fire and enjoy watching them die, as would Timmy and a whole lot of other good folks. Also, that peice of shit commissioner Stern can stick it cuz he is forcing players currently in the NBA to keep their mouth shut. What if, lets say, Dwayne Wade or Lebron James came out and said they hated fags too. What would Stern do then? Jack shit, thats what cuz they make him too much money selling out stadiums and selling jerseys. Stern firing Hardaway was a peice of shit move but Hardaway will spark players in the NBA to really speak their mind. Keep on talkin Timmy, Ive got ur back

That stuff is private. No one else should care either so it is wrong to even ask you these types of questions. That being said you should have just answered “I have an opinion on the matter but it is only my opinion, and I choose to keep it to my self”. What if a gay fireman saved your family from a burning building? Would you still hate him? I think not. No one not even a guy with the best crossover of all time should generalize and hate any group. people are people some good and some bad. let me tell you something, 1st of it is unhuman to be gay! ok! human beings are to be married from the other sexe just to keep the human race clean and keep on producing life on the crappy old earth we live in! gays and lesbos are those who are on the wrong side of the street! they drive the way up, when it is down!
to go and say it is civil or this is today’s world, nop! when i see that, when i see that the wrong is being right, and vise versa, i go crazzy! i respect amechi strength to admit, but i respect more timmy to say that!
life is full of hidden gays, and i find it unhealthy for them to stay hidden, but i can not imagine being with them! killing them? well that is too far! i would not do that! i can not kill people, maybe it is me! but every life form on earth has the right to live, and die in the end, when GOD wills it!
timmy, spoke his peace, respect it, admit that it is not wrong to hate gays, he is free of what he thinks, the guy is straight, and he is dissgused by the gays,so what!? accept it! ok!

Tim Hardaway proved his ignorance and prejudice with his harmful, hateful words. As a public figure he should realize that his words affect more than just those around him. And he is going to pay for those words as he has lost his endorsement. It’s sad that a player with so many fans, myself included, could act in such a way that has made many dislike him, again, myself included. Get a grip, Tim. No one cares what you do in your personal life, so you shouldn’t give a damn about what others do in theirs.

We can’t. because gay marriage is the new black rights in america. people are suing to be allowed to marry in CATHOLIC CHURCHES !
how ridiculous is that - can I sue Islam for not letting me eat pork? don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely have/had my share of homosexual friends - but the radical left-wing posturing has to stop somewhere.

German Reignman says:
this taken driectly from your All-Star flashback for 2006: “We hopped a cab and got downtown (about 15 minutes away) to the player’s hotel for the media day stuff. From getting out of the cab to getting to the media room, I saw: Sean May, Brand Jordan guru Gentry Humphrey, Moses Malone, Mark Jackson, Bill Walton, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Quentin Richardson, Oscar Robertson, Rory Sparrow, Sheryl Swoopes (and, um, companion), Melyssa Ford and Rolando Blackmon. That’s just what All-Star is like.” so everybody except swoopes was there all by themselves ? or just going for the quick joke ? This is a good example for the underlying haterism in society where your sexual orientation - once it deviates from the “mainstream” - turns you into a target …..

Feb.16 at 7:07 am

German Reignman I totally agree, total hypocrisy. I am sick of everyone saying how enlightened and tolerant they all are then castigating anyone who doesnt follow that line. The liberal media cant help but try to show what a bunch of caring, sharing, feel the love types they are, (see Gene Wochnarjski’s column on ESPN today) but reality is there are a lot of people who for whatever reason don’t like gay people. Now you can argue their reasoning, call them ignorant but they are the reality. Hompohobia is a strange term as well, it has somehow come to represent the general discrimination of gays, but it really means fear. I know you can argue a lot of prejudice comes from fear but it seems like mister UTEP two step just flat out doesnt like gay people.

Feb.16 at 9:43 am

Ryan Jones says:
German, I didn’t write that, but I’ll cosign Lang’s word (which is rare for me, admittedly)… I LOVE making jokes based on racial, ethnic and sexual stereotypes. Few topics are funnier. What matters is A) knowing your audience, B) making sure it’s equal opportunity, C) knowing which lines not to cross and D) most important by far, knowing the truth that lies behind the jokes. The fact is, Swoopes had fairly recently come out when Lang wrote that, so it was topical, and it was worth a cheap one-liner. Just like Khalid’s one-off shot of xenophobia. I know Lang, and he’s not a homophobe. I know Khalid, and he’s not a racist (although he does have a Race Drawer, but I’ll let him explain that one day…) When I’m with black friends, we make jokes about CPT and pink people. When I’m with gay friends, we joke about how they don’t know anything about sports and I don’t know how to dress. I tease my fat friends about being fat. I tease my dad about getting old. I tease my Mexican aunt and and cousins about being Mexican. And they all tease me back. You feel me? This isn’t just harmless, it’s actually HEALTHY — dialogue, honesty and all that good stuff. Otherwise, seriously, what the hell is left to joke about?
Damn Germans are so uptight….

Feb.16 at 9:56 am

Ryan Jones says:
And you too, Gilbert0. We definitely agree that there are a lot of hypocrites in the media and everywhere else, but otherwise, your logic is empty. If I tell you that for whatever reason, “I just don’t like black people,” are you cool with that? Or do you recognize the absurdity in blanketing a huge group of people as one unit that you can pretend to rationally “like” or “dislike”? It’s hate, man, and it’s poison, and it cannot be justified by any weak attempts at reason. Anyway, I’ma have Sam ban you for life for using the phrase “liberal media” in your post. Dummy.

Ryan, please illustrate where I said I was cool with what Hardaway said and yes, It is stupidity to simply dislike a group of people based on a common sexuality, race or whatever. Saying you hate all gay people is like saying you like all straight people. When did I attempt to justify hatred of any kind? I find it as sickening as you do and I behave in a similar fashion as you described in your other post when I am hanging out with gay friends. All I was saying that for every educated, tolerant person (who are disproportionately represented in the media) there are a lot of uneducated bigots. My point was that will continue to be the case no matter how many columns are written. Calling me dummy was a nice ending though, appreciated. Stupid Americans.

Feb.16 at 10:22 am

Rick Kang says:
Look — having your own opinion is fine. No one says you have to like gays or homosexuality. But the issue here is tolerance. Tolerance isn’t acceptance — who can stop you from having hateful opinions anyway? — but it is the bare minimum we expect from citizens in civilized society. Respect is something everyone deserves — unless you don’t give respect in turn.

The thought of retired has been’s confessing thier fictional gayness to get back in the limelight is hilarious. Anyway, why does everyone attribute being a homophobe and a biggot to being ignorant and uneducated. I’m pretty sure there are Harvard grads out there who are homophobes and racist’ and i’m sure it’s possible for someone to know everything about homsexuality and still say they hate gay people.
At the end of the day, that is just one person’s opinion, it doesn’t make them ignorant or uneducated, they might be, but there is not a direct association. There are similarities between racism and homophobia, so to me, if someone says they hate gays, it’s the same as them saying they hate black people. It’s still just one person’s opinion.

A bigot is a bigot because of the bigot’s opinion. A homophobe is a homophobe because of their fear and well, sure their opinion as well. None of it is based on fact although one could argue that pigeonholing and stereotyping can play into both and we all rely upon that sort of categorization. I sure like AK 47’s move to invite Amaechi and a partner to a party. Did they play ball together? And yes Amaechi is getting a great deal of attention. But I am not buying the book…just talking about the issue. He is getting more attention than money.

What does Hardway’s race have to do with anything? Wow there really are alot of ignorant people on both sides of this thing. Hardway’s approval of someones sexual liking or disliking has absolutely nothing to do with liking or dislike a race of people. To even compare the two ignores the struggles of blacks, jews, and any other race of people who have endured hardship. No one should hate anyone, but you damn sure don’t have to like everyone or like the things they do. Especially in what is suppose to be their private or personal life.

If you think about it, it really isn’t Amaechi getting the attention as much as is the topic of accepting the fact that human sexuality includes homosexuality. That human sexuality as a topic of discussion is one that has been taboo in our society and that the sports world is not only a representation of hyper-masculinity, but that the sexualizing of sports figures is an uncomfortable proposition. As one of my favorite Linstigators says: “play wit it”…

“accepting the fact that human sexuality includes homosexuality. That human sexuality as a topic of discussion is one that has been taboo in our society ..” Playing devil’s advocate here, but human sexuality also includes pedophilia, the oldest pastime in the book. Beastiality and polygamy too.. will the time come when they are norms? Tim Hardaway is entitled to his feelings but his mistake was using the word “hate.” While his words were reprehensible, I half admire the fact that he called himself a homophobe, because he must have had some inkling of the fallout. In a society where everyone claims to be tolerant, admitting one’s prejudices publicly is the first step towards a dialogue to solve the facade.

Ryan Jones says:
Patrick, you are fired from life. Do you really need me to explain that bestiality and pedophelia (not to mention things like rape, aggravated assault and purple nurples) are immoral primarily because they involve one person doing something to another person (or animal, I guess) doesn’t want done to them — they involve VICTIMS, in other words? And a consensual homosexual relationship, just like a heterosexual one, does nothing of the sort? Are you truly so stupid that you don’t see the difference? Having made the comparison, I’m guessing that yes, your are. Also, polygamy is a social/cultural issue, not some sort human sexual quirk. Mutoni, I know I shouldn’t have bothered, but F*CK, man. This sh*t is exhausting…

Patrick says:
Ryan, I don’t work/live/do anything for you so there’s no reason need to punctuate your rebuttal with irrelevant nonsense such as “you are fired from life,” or calling me names. I’ll admit that my pedophilia comparison was impulsive and flawed -
but said it yourself: “polygamy is a social/cultural issue, not some sort human sexual quirk.” If Shawn Kemp said “I hate monogamists, they disgust and frighten me” - would he face the same outrage? Or, more seriously, if Jerry Sloan said “I hate polygamists.” The same holds for homosexuality. If someone famous in Iran or South Korea, said the same words - no one would blink. I’m not saying that their conservative cultures are correct. But our Western custom, of overcompensating in every which way (do we HAVE to teach homosexuality to 6 year olds? Is it really that big of a deal?) against what know is wrong, does not necessarily make us right. An example is affirmative action - good intentions with questionable results. We don’t have it in Canada, (thankfully we have equal opportunity instead), but it exists in some forms in the US, and I would even say is still required in a place like South Africa. Keep the discusssion going but leave the insults for the schoolyard.

I’m at work too, Cheryl. Slow day.
And yeah, Patrick, you’re right: If someone in Iran said they hated gays, there probably wouldn’t be as much outrage. Also, I think they still cut off people’s heads there in public executions, which is also acceptible. And last thing (I promise, Mutoni, I PROMISE), I haven’t been 6 years old for a while, but I don’t remember anyone “teaching” me homosexuality then, or at any other point in my education.
Buttface.
I’M OUT LIKE JOHN AMAECHI.

Patrick, Good luck with leaving the insults in the schoolyard, because the gay rhetoric can not sustain itself without insults and twisting of the truth and lables such as homophobe, ignorant or bigot. If you ever debate with one of these individuals you will soon see that there isn’t a bigger bigot than a gay rights advocate. They are anti-religion, anti-traditional family, and anti-heterosexual. The goal of the gay movement is to make sexual preference as much like race and gender as possible. Comparing it to any other sexual orientation or preference is something that they will try hard to avoid. Your comparison is only flawed in that pedolphiles are drawn to unconsenting childrem rather a consenting adults. Thats only were your argument is flawed, but the comparison to race or gender are flawed on many levels. These people are attempt to redefine sexual morality, but to do so they must distance themselves from other sexual groups that are also considered deviant. Under their new definition any sexual activities among consenting adults is considering acceptable, that is as long as those consenting adults aren’t related.

Rudy says:
Dr. Kinsey says every human being swings both way. I think it’s fair to say that most people who expressed extreme hatred toward gay people are somewhat overcompensating for their shortcoming.
I used to like Tim alot when he was playing with Zo in Miami. He was great, but this is a pretty boneheaded comment. But I am grateful for it, because when both parties (being the gay atlhete and gay hater athlete) expressed their view, it will only lead to dicussion. Tim’s fired for being an ass. Shutting him out from any NBA related jobs because of his comment is harsh. But just like any workplace, I bet you’ll get fired if you get on the office PA system and declaring that you hate gays, and personally hate working with gays. race and sexual orientation is not the same, but they have similarities. There’s been gay bashing, black bashing, gay murders, lynchings. Everyone who says that you can hide being gay is baseless, because being a gay person means that one have a certain needs, wants, and impulses that’s pretty hard to hide.

It’s been hard not to notice that the TV news analysis of Tim Hardaway’s hate rant has often been so incredibly lacking. I suppose this shouldn’t be a surprise, considering how the American sports media mostly mishandled John Amaechi’s coming out in the first place. Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley, on TNT’s prominent NBA broadcasts, took the cynical approach (one they curiously intended as the high ground) that NBA players don’t have issues with gay teammates and that Amaechi’s only reason for coming out was to sell a book. Charles, never the sharpest tool in the shed, was unwilling or unable to take the issue beyond this superficial, preposterously presumptive thought (and by the way, Charles, every appearance you make on TV pads your pockets, too; does that mean we should dismiss your diatribes as pure money-making schemes?). NBA players may be progressive compared to the neanderthals in the NFL and MLB, but not by much. All three leagues feature culturally c
