The SLAM Midseason podcast
The award winning podcast gives out some awards.
This is a labor of love. I’ve been writing the online teaser for the magazine, and I promised a midseason podcast, and I don’t want to live the rest of my life as a lying liar like Nick Saban. I forced these segments on the staff last Thursday and it went on so long that I needed to chop it up into a bunch of little pieces and reduce the quality to analog tape recored from the 1970’s level. The Eastern Conference and Western Conference picks segment is just too long, so unless there’s a demand for that, you’ll have to make do with our midseason awards picks. I want to thank the participants. Ben Osborne, Khalid Salaam, Lang Whitaker, and Konate Primus. Thank you for taking 20 minutes of your busy day, even though this is part of your JOBS. As you will soon hear, the only thing that held me back from going on The White Rapper show and winning all the money is my voice.
So here you are. We don’t let you just download stuff to keep on your computer (unless you know the secret trick), you’ve got to listen to them here. Hope you enjoy.
The Intro
Most Improved Player
Sixth Man of the Year
Rookie of the Year
Coach of the Year
Defensive Player of the Year

ALX8725 says:
most improved player: Monta Ellis
Feb.6 at 3:54 pm
ALX8725 says:
and he gave Monta Ellis 10 minutes is because he sprained his ankle the previous game and it didnt fully heal yet and Monta was playing horrible so Nellie didnt give him the minutes. Against the Pacers Monta racked up 21 pts and 10 rebound BEFORE he got injured in the 3rd. He couldve had way more boards/pts.

Sparker says:
mip? deron williams. overachieving coach? sam mitchell… esp b/c of the bashing he’s been taking here for the past 2 years (though i’m not saying he should win best). western defender? marcus camby. nice job, sam. the effort is much appreciated.

Michael says:
Aint noway Arenas can be Mvp. IF Kobe couldn’t win it last year averaging 35.5 pts on 45% shooting with 5 50pts game and 27 40pts games thenArenas can’t win the MVp only aeveragin 29.5 on 42% shooting with only 3 5opt games and 7 40pt games. Hell Kobe has 3 50 pt games and 8 40pt games. You could agrue Arenas had a better year last season.

Good to hear your voices, fellas. Well, except Sam’s.

Sam Rubenstein says:
ha ha. Hey Ryan when’s the John Amechi cover of Penn State alumni magazine “coming out”?
Feb.6 at 5:11 pm
Ryan Jones says:
Probably next month, Sam. Do you know how disappointed I was that the “Outro” link wasn’t five minute of you guys discussing Amaechi? You let a great opportunity slip there.

Ryan Jones says:
Also: Konate, “Brooklyn…” is my vote for quote of the year.

Paniscus says:
COY: Sloan. I know it’s not supposed to be a lifetime achievement award, but give me a break. He’s been The Man through thick and thin in Salt Lake and he never gets more than token recognition. I want to see D’Antoni replicate his system without Nash and Marion for a few years before he’s anointed the de facto permanent COY.
DPOY: Good call about Camby, Sparker. My only misgiving about that is that the defensive lapses of the rest of the Nuggets makes Camby look like the man. But, then again, I guess is because he’s asked to cover a lot of lapses.
MIP: I’m with Sparker again, gotta be Deron Williams. Or, I’ll put it like this: Sloan should get COY or Williams should get MIP. Someone has to get some recognition for the improvement that team has shown. (And for what it’s worth, I’m a Blazers guy, so I’m not just being a homer)

namik says:
Wow, I cant Kobe got a 8 sec mention in the MVP talks. He changed his game exactly like how you all wanted him to. His team has done pretty well throughout the season even without Lamar and Kwame. He dropped his scoring average even though everyone knows he is still the best scorer in the L. You talk about the Wiz being a lottery team. Do you have any idea what the Lakers would be? 8 f***ing seconds??????

Namik is my hero.

Sam Rubenstein says:
I might have edited the Kobe conversation down too much. Nobody really went out of their way to make a case for him though.
Feb.6 at 5:46 pm
Max Airington says:
Why dont you guys do weekly podcasts?
Feb.6 at 5:53 pm
dma says:
MIP - Kevin Martin if he keeps it up.
6th Man - Ben Gordon I guess.
ROY - Brandon Roy easily.
Coach - D’Antoni because it’s the system!
Defense - Dwight HOWARD!
MVP - Dirk with Arenas right behind.

John says:
Kobe Colored Jacket. Haha, who said that?
Feb.6 at 7:27 pm

Kobe should be mentioned well before arenas… I think it is a three horse contest right now between Nash, Dirk, and Kobe.

the raptors are goin to run away with the atlantic, no nenad no rj, no chance. The nets had they chance when bosh went down and ford went down, now they all back, and we just rollin. Howard def defensive player of the year, kobe or dirk for mvp, cant have a guy win 3 mvps somthin mj didnt do with 0 titles, that just dont work
Feb.7 at 3:04 am
Magic Chicken says:
2 things: 1)Lang loves to ask “who is most important to their franchise”? Others usually aks “who is the best player in the league on a good team that has no help”? I think Kobe answers both these questions personally. 2)Didn’t Bowen get Defensive player of the Year recently? He’s in the west! If he hasn’t, he certainly should.
Feb.7 at 4:40 am
Young C says:
God, you guys are idiots. He asked who you thought was the most improved player and the first names that come out of your mouths are Bosh and Arenas. Yeah, two guys who were all-stars last year and are all-stars this year get the MIP. What a bunch of clowns! What about Monta Ellis, Kevin Martin,Luke Walton, etc. Guys who you didnt even know who they played for last year and now they are full-fledged contributors, thats who should get the MIP awards, losers.

Sam Rubenstein says:
Um… nevermind about that secret way to download the audio. It doesn’t work the way I thought it would.
Bowen did not win defensive player of the year but Mark Eaton did twice.

Secret Audio Trick:
You’re looking at this page in Internet Explorer? Go to View, click on Source.
It should open up a page of scary text. Try not to wet yourselves.
Do a search (Ctrl+F) for ‘mp3′. It should jump down to a line that says…
soundFile=http%3A%2F%2Fslamonline.com%2Fonline%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2007%2F02%2Fslamcast1.mp3
Replace all the ‘%2F’s with ‘/’. So this would come down to…’http://slamonline.com/online/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/slamcast1.mp3′
Paste that into a new Internet Explorer window. It should pop your Windows Media Player and the sound byte.
You can repeat this for all the other mp3 files on this page.

KB24 4MVP
Feb.7 at 4:50 pm
New era says:
Arenas getting MVP would be a joke. He’s averaging 29 points on about 42 percent, and the wizards are 2nd in the east which is about 7th or 8th in the west. The MVP of the league is kobe , if not him dirk, then steve nash. Agent 0 is about fifth on the list.
Feb.7 at 5:18 pm
Danny W. UK says:
MIP - Kevin Martin especially if the Kings drop out the playoff hunt, KMart2 will have nothing to loose, and Greg Oden to gain.
6th Man - ROY - David Lee.
Coach - Jerry Sloan, lifetime acheivement, if you can have co MVP’s in the All Star game at Salt lake city (Malone and Stock). Then he can have this.
Defense - Marion.
MVP - KB24, although without Nash, Portland pushed Phoenix into OT, and woulda lost in regulation had anyone in Portland had the ball for the lay up other than Outlaw. And what’s with the Amaechi jibes, you guys should be respecting the Race and Diversity of the world…………..
Feb.7 at 5:20 pm
Danny W. UK says:
6th man - LEE
ROY - Brandon ROY
Feb.8 at 12:25 am
Paolo says:

6th Man: David Lee, Knicks
ROY: Brandon Roy, Blazers
Defensive Player of the Year: Shane Battier, Rockets
Coach: Phil Jackson
MVP: Dirk Nowitzki
