The NBA Doesn’t Want Dwight To Get Creative
Rules are rules, I guess.
You would think that the League would be in support of a player taking part in this year’s dunk contest and wanting to do something that’s never been done before. Something potentially mind-boggling, and something that would be talked about for years to come. Something that would resurrect what used to be one of All-Star weekend’s markee events. You would think.
And you would be wrong.
According to Marc Stein’s sources, Dwight Howard planned on throwing down a 360 banger in this year’s flight fest. With the rim raised to 12 feet!!! Oh, and he also planned on putting the rock through his legs before smashing it home on an 11 and 1/2 foot rim, too. There’s just one problem: The NBA won’t allow it. Something about Howard’s antics being “a departure from the basic rules of the contest”, or some other nonsense.
Great job, NBA. The weekend is off to a fine start.

Stern, his last name says it all.

This is gonna make more and more top players not want to participate in these things.

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!
that woulda been ill!
I read Clyde Drexler dunked on a 12 foot rim at some trailblazers charity event back in the early 90’s. man, the league decision makers gotta remember this weekend is about F-U-N let the young bucks get creative.
It’s not like the dunk competiton is mostly stale anyhow.
when the last time you had two really good dunkers go head to head???

To answer Celtic Fan’s question: That would be 2000, when Steve Francis had the misfortune of going up against vintage Vince. Any other year, Franchise would have won easily. He had some unwholesome dunks.

i dont get the dunk contest one bit they generally bring in the non top guys now like aside from gerald green whos a dunker you heard of for it in this years show? and yo nate robinson sucks my dick

Kyle Stack says:
Why doesn’t the NBA just go back to spinning the wheel? At least then we can know beforehand that the contest is gonna suck

407 IS HERE!!!!! Dwight is that dude, and you don’t even have to worry about any off-court drama. He’s the anti-J.R. Rider. Can’t wait to see what he’s gonna do. The league needs to lighten up. The dunk contest is garbage now, and bums like Tired…oh I mean Tyrus Thomas act like they don’t wanna be in it, so throw the rules out. Bring back the old school format like how that Slam article was talking about. If you miss, you go home. That means you, Nate Robinson.

To Celtic Fan: I heard about that too. My HS coach said that Clyde jumped over one of his teammates in a game when he was in HS many moons ago. Did anyone see the ESPN Who’s #1 NBA dunkers?

The only way Dwight can win now is to shatter the backboard on one of his dunks.

Mooks, hopefully that is a Bad News Bears 2 reference you are using there. Sucks that Kelly Leak won’t be playing this weekend.

Good decision. Otherwise we’d have Disaster Dickau dunking on an 8 foot rim next year.
Feb.16 at 3:42 pm
Jas says:
It’s a good decision by the league. Raising the rim to 12 feet has nothing to do with creativity, especially when you consider he’d be pulling off a 360 and a between the legs dunk, which we’ve all seen already. It would only prove that he can jump high. Where’s the creativity in that? Besides, it would sort of welcome rule-bending ideas, like someone wanting to dunk on a 9 foot rim.
Feb.16 at 3:48 pm
mutoni says:
it’s not about the rules, dude. it’s about someone doing something that’s fucking awesome. dunking on a 9 foot rim is, pardon my french, gayer than tim hardaway. dwight’s plan, on the other hand, is divine. just like him.
Feb.16 at 3:58 pm
Jas says:
The contest is not about who can jump higher. If it were, there would be no need to use a basketball. I’m not saying dunking on a 12 foot rim isn’t impressive or that it wouldn’t look good, it’s just that the jump itself is not CREATIVE. His dunks wouldn’t be more creative just cause the rim is higher. But whatever…
Feb.16 at 4:17 pm
mutoni says:
yes the would. you lose!
Feb.16 at 4:32 pm
dez says:
well, if Dwight can do all that on such a high rim, then he should be able to pull of REALLY SICK dunks on a 10foot rim. i still don’t think anyone’s going to pull off a 720
Feb.16 at 4:35 pm
Paniscus says:
Man, no disrespect to the developmentally delayed, but this decision is retarded. Between last year’s debacle and this I think that we can close the book on the dunk contest. The only things I’ll be watching are rookie-sophs, the point guard skills challenge and the game itself. Oh yeah, Mutoni 1; Jas 0.
Feb.16 at 4:37 pm
Mike says:
What a shame. Would have loved to have seen that. If Dwight can really do a between-the-legs dunk on a 12-foot rim, he ought to be able to grab a ball off the top of the backboard and slam it down. Wonder if anyone has thought of trying that????
Feb.16 at 4:48 pm
mutoni says:
i heard somewhere this morning that might attempt to sign his autograph on the backboard while dunking. eat your heart out, T.O
Feb.16 at 4:51 pm
Blue says:
Wow…and allowing Scrappy Doo to get a high enough dunk score to become champ after 15 tries (on one dunk no less!!!) isn’t “a departure from the basic rules of the contest?” Gimme a break!
Feb.16 at 5:16 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I want Dwight to dive through the rim. And I still think they should cancel the dunk contest if the big guys (Carter, Kobe, LeBron, Wade) aren’t going to enter. It’s pathetic.
Feb.16 at 5:49 pm
Noah Doucette says:
cmon why would you cancel it? i meen wasnt last year’s fun to watch even though the end result wasnt correct? its just fun to watch someone do the unthinkable (off the back of the backboard?!) no matter who they are. we watch bron, wade, kobe, vince all season, at the all star game and in the playoffs. so is it really that bad that once a year for about an hour we dont get to see them?
Feb.16 at 5:49 pm
Brian says:
thats soo stupid…the nba should just cancel the damn dunk contest
Feb.16 at 5:58 pm
Kene says:
…just remember, ppl were saying ‘Cancel the dunk contest’ before Vince blew the roof off in 2000 too. I don’t think the contest’s the problem because at the end of the day, its all about the participants. Gerald Green, James White and Josh Smith (sans duct tape) would be a dunk contest worth watching.

like WOW isnt the whole point of the comp to be creative like wow thats whacked yo dwight should do that any way who cares if they give him a crappy scores everyone ese will love it if they let darell armstrong with a lay up than like what the heck dwight will still win no matter what the rules say
Feb.16 at 9:16 pm
Iversonbrotha says:
da dunk contest used to be cool. but these last couple of years, i’ve lost all my pride, with dudes taking 20 trys to dunk. the nba should put a huge money pot so the dunk contest can make a comeback. jrich, vince, LBJ, Kobe, and T-mac should be ashamed cuz they never go out for the dunk contest. man, MJ used to take the dunk contest as a challenge. he used it as an intimidator and all that crap. sucks that dudes nowadays don’t do that
Feb.16 at 11:34 pm
Blinguo says:
Hopefully Dwight just sticks to something like running out there and grabbing one of Nate’s many misses and does a tip dunk - pushing Nate out of the way in mid motion, to stop another 15 minute Birdman-esque delay in the contest. Then he points at Melo in the crowd, then David Stern.
Feb.17 at 3:33 am
David says:
I was watching some old dunk contest highlights this morning. The contest needs less rules, not more. Make it simpler and just let the guys figure it out in the air. I’d say no props, no team mates, no wheels, no bs. Just let ‘em jump.
Feb.17 at 12:43 pm
James says:
Blinguo - if that happened, I could die tomorrow a happy man

Mark says:
Kene, If you’ll recall, Stern did do away with the contest for a couple years (after it hit an absolute low point with the Kobe contest - trust me, it was awful). He only brought it back in 2000 to join in on the Vinsanity marketing blitz. I think in recent years, he’s been trying to kill it off again. How else do you explain all of the obviously fan-hating rule changes?
Feb.17 at 1:18 pm
Matthew says:
Dwight will upset G. Green in the contest. Mark it down.
Feb.17 at 2:22 pm

dwight should rip the rim down in disgust, and throw it in the crowd.

ekam says:
THAT WUDEV BEEN CRAZY but then next year we wud see guys trying to do the same shit like they did to between the legs ppl kept doing it over and over again except fo 2007 today it stopped happening and the dunk contest sucked DWIGHT GOT ROBBED!

Darksaber says:
Seeing how he did put a sticker a twelve feet, his original idea would have given us all a collective brain bleed. Darth Stern and his cronies just can’t stop pissing off their fan base this season huh? I wish he had shattered the backboard, turned around and walked out of the building. THAT would have been a statement
