The Gerald Green Show (and Joe Johnson?)
The Shocker gets charged up…
Two things really quick:
1) Just got an email that Jason Kidd has a “strained back” and will miss the next two Nets games. There’s no word about his availability for the All-Star Game, but if he’s missing two real games you figure he wouldn’t push it to play in Vegas. (Also, if I was him, with all he’s been through of late, I wouldn’t be so excited about having to face the assembled ravenous media for an hour.)
The bigger question is, Does this open a roster spot for Joe Johnson? Will The David Stern Robot right the most egregious wrong of the All-Star selection process?
2) Reebok is already getting the hype started for Gerald Green’s trip to the dunk contest. Came to work this morning and found a huge box on my desk with “THE GERALD GREEN SHOW” on the side. In the box was the t-shirt pictured, a poster, a folder with press releases and other assorted flotsam. I like the idea behind the whole thing — a player being actively promoted a week before the dunk contest.
Says here Gerald Green wins it all. What do you guys think?

Gerald Green will be the run away winner. Alas, the only bright spot for my beloved Boston Celtics. Until we get Durant this summer!!

Lang Whitaker says:
What makes you Celtics fans so sure that Fingers Ainge will draft the right guy? If it sounds like the Celts are dead-set on Durant, that just makes me question Durant even more.
Feb.13 at 1:53 pm
Reggie Evans says:
Is he going to do a dunk that showcases his missing finger?
Feb.13 at 1:53 pm
RiseKing says:
I want that tee…it would take a Shawn Kemp-esque contest choke for him not to get the dub.
Feb.13 at 1:57 pm
Sparker says:
gerald does the same dunk a lot in highlights. just to be contrary, i’ll pick… who else were we supposed to pretend we care about this year?
Feb.13 at 1:58 pm
Lang Whitaker says:
Just spoke to Reebok…we’re going to get a bunch of Gerald Green gear for a giveaway here on SLAMonline. More on that to come soon…
Feb.13 at 1:58 pm
Topher says:
Hey Lang, if Michael Redd was ready for the All-Star game would you still think that Joe Johnson is the obvious pick? Nice comment on Ainge by the way.
Feb.13 at 2:03 pm
scott says:
Oden or Durant you cant go wrong with either player (would rather have Durant). I just pray that Boston doesn’t get the third pick in the draft.
Feb.13 at 2:10 pm
whooo! says:
i still want dwight howard to win… can’t he like snatch a quarter off the backboard or something n then try dunking it? i mean the dude can already kiss the rim, he must have something up his sleeve.
Feb.13 at 2:23 pm
Patrick says:
what about opening up a spot for eddy curry?
Feb.13 at 2:24 pm
HDIYM says:
Dwight’s gonna take it by tearing the rim down: “That’s what I have people telling me — tear it down! But you know how hard that is to do?” Howard said. “I know Shaq has done it (twice in his career). I don’t know. It’s never been done (in the all-star competition.”
Feb.13 at 2:36 pm
dma says:
zach randolph deserves to replace nash. eddy curry needs to get in. and juvie will win the dunk contest. HA!
Feb.13 at 2:40 pm
Lang Whitaker says:
Yes, I’d still take Joe Johnson over Michael Redd. Redd’s fantastic but Joe does more for his team than Redd does for the Bucks. Also, I think they should replace Kidd with another guard.

Mike says:
Id take Green, but im still holding onto hope that Vince and Kobe are gonna rip their suits off and join in the fun.
Feb.13 at 4:16 pm

AGREED with Mike.

Tommy Patron says:
Gerald Green will totally win, unless Tyrus Thomas has some cool looking dunks that he has given no inkling of so far this year. Also-The Hawks SUCK. Put Ben Gordon on.
Feb.13 at 5:32 pm
abelp says:
i dont think joe j does more than redd..id say its pretty much even and it comes down to who has played the most games…
Feb.13 at 5:36 pm
Mike says:
The real question is whether or not Oden and Durant are the right brain type to play for the Celtics. If they’re not the right brain type, then Ainge will say “no thanks, we have Brian Scalabrine already, we don’t need any help.”
Feb.13 at 5:49 pm
Ryu says:
No problem with Gerald, and, yeah, he’s gonna win it. But this RBK ad with Elvis is crap.
Feb.13 at 5:59 pm
Kyle Stack says:
I hope Gerald blows everyone out of the water. Anything to shut Nate Robinson up. I just hope Nate can finish each of his dunks in under two minutes this year.
Feb.13 at 6:13 pm
Lang Whitaker says:
I was about two feet behind the backboard when Dwight shattered it at a SLAM photo shoot two years ago — one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in person. I still have a few pieces of glass from that backboard on my desk. I may take a shard out to Vegas for good luck. Hopefully Dwight and I can recreate our glass-breaking karma in Vegas.
Feb.13 at 6:27 pm
Maclean says:
I do agree with sending Joe Johnson. Although, alot of ppl think Ben Gordon or even Luol should go ..the Bulls ARE in 5th.
Feb.13 at 6:27 pm
Deuce21 says:
1. JJ is more deserving than Redd, Mike’s missed too many games.
2. Gerald over Nate in the dunk (I’ve got this funny feeling that Nate is gonna pull out something freaky, besides, fans judges love the underdog)
Feb.13 at 6:45 pm
DP says:
Who cares? I won’t even watch the dunk contest. It is going to be so boring. JJ for all-star. Deron Williams as well. play wit it.
Feb.13 at 7:08 pm

“the most egregious wrong of the All-Star selection process?” nothing like bias for the your home town’s star player.

Exactly, Drew. But I’m right about this.

thesubwayconnection says:
I think Gerald Green will win it unless Dwight pulls that. And I think he can. Dwight’s my dark horse, and I think the two of them will be in the finals. Dwight breaks the glass and automatically wins it. It’d be dope to see, just like me in that t-shirt. . .
Feb.13 at 7:58 pm
thesubwayconnection says:
Also, I think Joe should get put on, and this might be his opportunity. EC’s played great, but I don’t think that he should get a spot over Joe.

ktokyo says:
Someone’s gotta sign Taurian Fontenette (Air Up There) to a 10-day contract so he can beat all of these clowns in the dunk contest. Other than that, if Dwight Howard can shatter the glass at will, he deserves to win…

Dan says:
Here’s the thing: I know that Oden, Durant and Wright are quite possibly the top, not to mentioned most hyped, players in this year’s draft, but the Celtics don’t need any of them. Maybe Oden, but certainly not Durant or Wright. When you think about it realistically, they already have Jefferson at the 4 and they have P-double and Wally to man the 2 and 3, so they need to draft a player that actually fits their needs. I say maybe to Oden because I don’t think he fits the Celtics system. Maybe they should think about drafting a point guard that actually thinks “pass-first”. Don’t get me wrong, I love Delonte West, but he is clearly a true shooting guard, and don’t even get me started on Telfair. I know you guys at Slam love Sebi, but the only reason you still stand behind him is so that you don’t have to admit defeat. . .

KMG says:
A shattered backboard is an automatic win…can’t top that.
Feb.14 at 1:17 am
Young C says:
There is no way that Dwight is gonna break the backboard. There is a reason that no one has broken the backboard since Shaq did it back when he was with Orlando. The NBA has break-away rims with reenforced backboards. It hasnt happened since and never will happen again, whether its an NBA game or the Dunk contest. Unless, the NBA cheats and rigs the backboard.

The Real Mongoose says:
Dan is a genius. The Celtics should trade down to avoid the best talent to come into the league this decade (besides Lebron of course.) There is nothing worse than having a talent like Kevin Durant, or if worse comes to worse, you have to pick Oden. With players like Wally Skzbehfy holding down the 2 spot is is amazing they have lost 18 in a row.

So Chief Sucks, how am I a “retard”? Because I am more knowledgable about the NBA and team needs than you are? I appologize if my intelligence exceeds your own and you feel as though you need to insult me due to that act. You are one of those that I am sympathetic for; you call yourself a basketball fan, yet you do not bother with the analysis of situations. Clearly you are one of the masses who simply gets caught up in the glamour of the NBA. I feel extremely sorry for your lack of intelligence, which is clearly on display through the comment you posted. You have no supporting evidence to back-up your claim. I suppose it hurt your head far to much when you read my comment to even begin to comprehend. . . My feelings go out to you.

G-Money’s going to have a Vince Carter like performance on Saturday. Word on the street is that Gerald has a couple of dunks that cats have never even seen before. And don’t be surprised if you see a Dee Brown flashback with the Reebok Pumps. Boston countdown to Oden is on!
Feb.15 at 10:50 pm
Marcus says:
There are many players that deserve to be allstars which is why the commish should increase the roster. Nate should’ve never won last year which is why he WON’T win this year. Thomas is goin to get his $$$ so he doesn’t matter. My pick was originaly G-Money but I can definitely see an upset.
Feb.15 at 11:00 pm
Marcus says:
I agree with the cheif, fans should just shut-up and watch. I heard some people ask why Melo deserves to be an allstar. Sure he was suspended (which was a little extra so ima be like VC15 come on 15 games, come) Melo took his team to the playoffs in his first year and with no disrespect to LeBron but he was chillin @ home or in a gym. It’s the same with Kobe. I know alot of people whu were Kobe Haters (which I am) but after the 81 pts they all became fans like come on.

I hear Durant is thinking about not even entering the draft and doing another year in school. Good for him. Maybe he wants to guarantee the number 1 spot, since we all know Oden’s got top.

Iversonbrotha says:
I have to disagree with Lang. Joe Johnson doesn’t do more for his team than Micheal Redd. That’s stupid that the judges didn’t keep Dwight Howard in the contest. They don’t understand the complexity of that dunk. The dunk contest is getting some flare back . . . finally. Nate needs to actually have a written plan coming in to the dunk contest though. The fact that he’s 5′9 isn’t going to win it for him every year. Gerald Green can fly. It’s a shame that nobody in the dunk contest actually has any game anymore. I mean, when can a dude like Kobe, Vince, or LBJ go in to the dunk contest?
