Player of the D.A.Y.

I haven’t written a really “out of the box” one in a while. It’s time.

By Sam Rubenstein

Basketball and sports in general are here to entertain us. Even when we take it too seriously and look for deeper meaning, it’s still entertainment. Last night, several players provided us with joy in winning efforts. Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Darko Milicic, and Stephon Marbury just to name a few. But there was one unforgettable moment that will be burned into out brains until the end of time. And it can be seen in the video below.

OUCH! Shaun Livingston might never be the same again. Maybe he’ll bounce back. Either way, that is the lasting image from the NBA last night. Is it sick or masochisitic or macabre to watch something like this over and over? How does Shaun feel? How do you feel? On a night when the Player of the D.A.Y. was a toss up between the host and first guest on Stars on Stars, I’m going the third way.

Shaun Livingston is player of the D.A.Y. and not for anything he did as a part of a positive performance on a basketball court. He needs this right now. Rest up Shaun. Your pain entertained millions. Take solace in that.

Honorable mention goes to John Brown, who was ROBBED!!! Skip ahead to about the 1:55 mark of this video.

“Straight out of the bottom of a rotten insane asylum. Maybe the stardom will calm him?” People, this is FIRE.

That 2nd video is just another demonstration that people will value energy and volume over quality. Brown deserved the win

Also, this isn’t really ‘out of the box’ as much as it is ‘out of the socket’

“Your pain entertained millions” - there is deffinetly a better word to put in there than entertained. Disgusted and Nausiated come to mind.

I thought about saying something about Shamrock’s nose looking worse than Livingston’s knee, but is just too mean.

man is just not meant to be 6′7″ and 160lbs.

lentheric says:
An MRI revealed that Livingston suffered tears to the ACL, PCL, MCL and lateral meniscus. Livingston also suffered a patella dislocation, in addition to the previously diagnosed tibia/femoral dislocation. The prognosis on Livingston’s return to basketball activity is eight to twelve months.

Uh…shamrock sucks. He sounds like, while, a white guy that can’t rap talking really fast and putting in a great effort, but, in the end, he still sucks. that was the first I’d ever seen of the show, and I hate Shamrock already.

Man, that’s cold!!!!! You shouldn’t take such pleasure in a man’s pain like this, especially a good guy like Shaun… Have a heart Sam!!!!!!!!!

Ron says:
That Shaun Livingston vid reminds of the south park episode when they made Kyle or Stan -I don’t remember which one- black and he played ball and was the star of the team. He went for a dunk, and when he landed his knees exploded. I wish I could a clip to link.

Will Lee says:
“Your pain entertained millions” was disgusting really. He’s only 21 and dislocated both knees, I truely feel the pain and pressure he felt, but just all the bad luck came to him. Shaun Livingston, I give you my fullest support. Please come back healthy!

Gahhhh! Read the game recap first but seeing that video makes my knees go weak and my stomach turn. I pray Shaun has God’s grace to get him through this and that one day he will get back to playing the game that he loves. That was just so gut wrenching to watch, truly. I hope he can feel the fans supporting him. Any basketball fan, or sports fan even, has to be rooting for him.

Phil B. says:
Glad you mentioned Darko in passing. 16 boards and 5 blocks was a great effort. How good Orlando’s front line be in two years? Best wishes to Shaun Livingston, too.

TripleDouble says:
Did Livingston sign a long term contract yet?
If not, I guess those guys are insured up to the ears. Damn, I hope he comes back. Reminds me of Micael Jones, a New Zealand All Black rugby player in early 90’s. He was one of best players in the world and then he got tackled and his entire body continued on to about 70degrees forwards in front of his knee, like the wrong way… horrible to watch. He came back though, so fingers crossed for Shaun.

Dan says:
dpak brings up a rather valid point; although I enjoy watching Shaun play, he needs to add some muscle to his frame. And while it is a little ignorant to criticize a man in a situation such as this, it all could have been avoided if he gained some weight during the off-season. Although I will say that being the same build, height, and weight as Shaun Livingston, I feel his pain even more than most who watched that attrosity.

Feb.28 at 4:01 am

c-note says:
He’s out 8-12 months. tore 3 out of the 4 ligaments in his knee. Might even miss next season.

Feb.28 at 4:47 am

Will Lee says:
was it much more serious than his right knee dislocation?

Feb.28 at 5:26 am

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
Damn you, Rubenstein! I nearly lost control of my bowels when I saw that. (Okay, not really, but at least I winced so hard my head still hurts.) But really, Livingston certainly deserves some props, but “entertainment” is hardly the word here.

Man! That has to be the most brutal injury I’ve ever seen. Poor guy. Poor Clippers. If he ever makes it back full strengt, it’s a medical miracle. My biggest fear playing ball is having an injury like that. Good luck Shaun! Stay strong.

You humans and your “emotions.” Entertainment was a rough choice, but I did honor him with the Player of the D.A.Y. award.

Does anybody watch soccer around here? Chelsea’s captain, John Terry, took a boot in the face, was out cold before he hit the ground, swallowed his tongue, stopped breathing, and turned blue before being resuscitated, then was stretchered off the field with an oxygen mask and a neck/head brace… and returned to the field 2 hours later to celebrate winning the Carling Cup with his teammates. He’s supposed to be totally fine now.

Feb.28 at 10:01 pm

Valarie says:
I should’ve mentioned that this happened this weekend.
