Player of the D.A.Y.

You can question the effort of LeBron or Vince, but not…

By Sam Rubenstein

Well, I put the Vince Carter tape up today, and I think that should hold everyone’s attention for a while. So you get this early. Lang and I have to play a Madden SuperBowl preview. I’m taking the Bears and I think they will win the game in real life. When people spend too much time overthinking, they overlook the simplest thing. Defense beats offense. Last year the Steelers had the better defense. The Patriots always did in each of their SuperBowls, and Tampa did against the Raiders. In fact, I think we could see something like what happened in the Oakland-Tampa SuperBowl. Everybody talked about how the Raiders had this record-setting QB and then he ended up throwing like 5 interceptions. This Bears D is a lot like that Tampa one. Anyways, that’s what I think.

I still find myself strangely obsessed about the LeBron stuff, and how annoyed I keep getting about how the Cavs are playing. Maybe this game will be a wake-up call for him and his team. DWade did the publicity tour and Olympic basketball thing over the summer too, not to mention he played 2 more grueling pressure-cooker playoff series than LeBron. He doesn’t seem to be saving his energy for the future. Wade had the best damn 12 turnover and 9 field goal game you ever saw.

Honorable mention goes to Amare for his 24 and 23 against Duncan and the Spurs. But the hot button topic of the day being LeBron’s effort and Vince back then vs. now just makes this the perfect day to give it to Wade.

Flash is a nice name and all, but if we wanna go with comic names, i prefer to call Wade the Wrecker. Because he just wreaks havoc on the court. It’s so impressive how someone that ripped and swollen up can move that fast, absorb contact and just drop the ball in from all (im)possible angles. Christ

Wade is completely unstoppable. There isn’t one person in this world who could guard him 1:1. (goes for Kobe too)

when i look at the way that wade and bron plays, i see lebron as the power type as oppose to wade’s finesse type. someone mentioned on TNT last night that ginobili is the best at using angles in the game. i’d say wade is even more mercurial, so he’s better than bron at avoiding charge and instead drawing fouls. bron needs to slim down a little so he can out-quick instead of out-muscle. speed always defeat power. oh and for god’s sake, bron, relearn how to shoot free throws. you NEED to make those freebies. for all of wade’s heroic last night, if bron made his freethrows they woulda won. and we’d be talking about how great cavs is today instead of how bad he’s playing.

Max Airington says:
I respect Wade’s determination in repeatedly going to the basket, but it seems like alot of the calls he gets are due to his reputation for attacking rather than his actually being fouled.

Dez - there are a lot of guys in the NBA that can’t be stopped 1 on 1 (Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Vince, TMac, Ray Allen, JJ, Agent 0, etc.). Luckily the NBA plays 5 on 5.

dez says:
Lebron takes himself out of the game (differing to his teammates, not a bad thing, but he’s passing to eric snow)
Vince (stands 4 feet outside the 3pt line and jacks up fadeaways)
TMac (not healthy, unfair to judge though, bc Yao is broken too)
Agent 0 is unstoppable, no arguement there. He attacks all the time.
But nobody beats Wade in that he WILL attack every time. He’ll dribble till he finds an opening, and attacks. Few ppl do that, although all are capable.

None of the superstars in the league can really be stopped one on one, but i think what makes Wade so tuff to guard is the point Max alluded to. Even if you play impeccable D, stay in front, no hands beat him to the spot, just the fact that he’s attacking the rim is enough for the refs to call a foul. I think it’s BS because not even Kobe gets that much respect. When the Lake show played Miami, Wade and Kobe would do identical drives and even with all Kobe’s arm flailing and screaming, he still wouldn’t get the same call. Everyone thinks Lebron is the spoiled brat of the NBA, but i think Wade has that crown for sure. I can’t watch TV without seeing a DWade commercial, and now he gets every call. Nobody should get 24 free throws in 1 game.

Maybe Shaq…

If LeBron, Dirk, and Garnett were all on the same team, they would all defer to a guy like Daniel Gibson. I’m not a Wade fan, but he at least knows how to take advantage of his skills and the way a game is being called. And he has the desire to take the last shot that all truly great players must have. Plus, he carries himself and even looks a bit like Marlo Stansfield. Sam - can we get a separated at birth on these 2, if we haven’t already?

dez says:
Shaq who? oh, u mean that guy who shows up halfway through the season to take Dwight Howard’s ASG spot?

Paps77 says:
How about Wade trying the same dunk as Kobe the other night and blowing it. The litlle windmill reverse side of the rim. Nice try

Feb.2 at 5:22 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
I’ve thought of that same Wade/Marlo comparison before. I think it’s just because Marlo dresses in a sweatsuit (like a basketball player) half the time. I thought Fruit looked more like Wade.

Darksaber says:
awww, paps is a mambiatch fan. Hmm, one thing i appreciate is how many shots do NOT go in for these guys. But the good ones (yeah, Flash) keep trying.

Russ Bengtson says:
I totally disagree with this one. 12 turnovers and a lot of help from the refs do not a P.O.D. make. Amare deserved it.

Reggie Evans says:
Charley Rosen over at Fox Sports lists DWade’s line with 22 turnovers. Dayaamm.

Maha10k says:
Amare takes a shot to the onions, scored 24, grabs 23 boards and holds Duncan to 6-18. I agree with Russ.

Feb.2 at 6:23 pm

Dblizzy! says:
I meant the old shaq, not this imposter in a heat jersey. And i agree with Russ too, just because I don’t like how Wade gets the star treatment with the calls.

Feb.2 at 6:23 pm

Chris says:
wade single handedly won the game for miami, he personally outscored the cavs in the 4th quarter 24 - 23, that a P.O.D. makes. Amare was a beast no doubt, but so was marion, and nash was nash

Feb.2 at 7:36 pm

sams a dick says:
wade deserved it over amare? Wade travels so much its ridiculous. When he plays some d then we ll mention his name as a great player.

Feb.2 at 10:34 pm

Callidac D says:
Yo son!dudes stop hatin on wade,shet…..i agree with chris he definetly outscored the cavs in tha fourth.AND on tha real tough i dont think anyone can guard D-wade,shet he’s the only player to me in the NBA that has some good street moves and he can ball fa real… now thats gansta!

niQ says:
wade is doing what carter should have done in toronto.. the coach always told carter to drive but all he did was take those fadeaway threes.. and it always confused people because he even faded away when there was no one to fade away from… but ye.. i watched that game.. once wade realized his team was in trouble.. he drove to the next on almost every possession.. making the other team pick up fouls and then hitting like 23 out or 24 free throws.. thats what he’s good at..lol

Feb.5 at 1:55 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Wade carries the ball.

Feb.5 at 2:19 pm

albie1kenobi says:
his crossovers are ridiculous. it’s near carry on all of them. how is it possible to cross from wide left to wide right with one hand while the ball is moving horizontal? he does do it at lightning speed (hence, flash?) so i guess he can get away with it.

Feb.5 at 5:33 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Exactyly, albie1kenobi. I slo mo’ed it, and he “hooks” the ball along a horizontal plane parallel to the floor. He makes moves with his body and legs while he suspends the ball in the air, and makes his move based on the defender’s reaction. Wade carries the ball.

Feb.5 at 6:35 pm

albie1kenobi says:
i guess if you can outquick the refs, it’s counted as one of your supermoves. it’s like his fireball or something.

More like his Mjolnir ;-)
