Pippen Ain’t (Restin’) Easy
Call it a comeback.
Scottie Pippen wants to postpone his Hall of Fame induction.
By playing again.
Seriously.
It’s all laid out by Sam Smith (registration required) in the Chicago Tribune. I guess on some level it makes sense—Pip’s only 41, and he hasn’t played in the NBA since ‘03-04, so his body has had a chance to heal. And Pippen always was one of the most in-shape dudes in the L (no Amaechi). Plus, he’s being realistic. It’s not like he thinks he’s going to come back and be an All-Star.
“I’m thinking of trying to come back for the playoffs,” Pippen said. “Something like the last two months of the season, somewhere I can come back and play limited minutes to start, play point forward for someone and build toward the playoffs. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for the last three months.”
Why not? The Bulls don’t have room for Pippen in their fully stocked backcourt, but you’d think there would be plenty of other teams willing to take a flyer on one of the 50 Greatest NBA Players of All-Time. Especially given the way he’s feeling.
“I’m moving good. I feel pretty fast and you don’t forget the game. I watch and see so many young guys who don’t know how to run a team and I feel I could help someone.”
Why not?

Yeah, this sounds really desperate. He was such a great player though. I guess selfishly I hope he goes to the Lakers. There’s a pretty good chance too since he knows the system and obviously played for Phil, Tex, Frank…

psh you’re crazy Chris C. the raptors are hot, bargnani is heating up, bosh always had it in him, and now with T.j. and calderon there to supply those two and hell, even garbo and anthony.. fourth seed, they’re taking their division.. p.s. mopete needs to start! back to business, pippen should go new orleans or perhaps even atlanta, bobcats are stacked they just need to stop playing bad. nok and atl are only options.

My last great memory of Pippen (one of my all-time least favorite players, as good as he was) is of Kobe scoring over him in one of those Laker-Blazer playoff series, Pip somehow ending up on his ass (can’t remember if Kobe bumped him, crossed him over or what) and Kobe looking down at him and mouthing “Bitch.” Since I was still young and innocent and thus a Laker fan back then, I loved it.

Ryan, you made yourself out to be a fool by trying to use Kobe’s half-steppin’ bulls@#t as some way to slight Pip! 6 rings, 3 rings, case closed. Same coach, same great leading man to follow. Money’s on Pip to end up with Miami since he’s usually at 75 percent of their home games and he lives in Ft. Lauderdale. BTW, Pip was at Heat-Spurs last Sunday and when they flashed his picture on the Jumbotron, he had jet black hair with no signs of grey like he had the last couple of years working in-studio with Kenny, Charles & EJ. Ready for TV? It would really open up the opportunity to trade Posey and get a point guard and let Pip roam the lanes either with Eddie Jones and D-Wade.(Damn, it sounds like I’m talking about 1997) He won’t put up with Kobe’s clown act!

I did no such thing, Jason Williams, you dumb cracker. I acknowledged Pip’s greatness. He was sick. I just didn’t like him because he played for the Bulls, who I hated, and because he seemed like a d*ck. Given all that, it remains a heart-warming memory for me: The player I used to like embarrasing the player I never did.

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m torn on this one. Because on the one hand, I remember the Scottie Pippen who was my favorite player in the NBA in the late ’90s, taking charges and winning titles. Then I remember the other Scottie Pippen, the one who was a complete dick to me in Houston when I went out there to profile him, and got lit the F up in that series Ryan alludes to (was that 2000? If so, I think I have the whole series on tape somewhere.) Either way, I love that he talks about playing 15 minutes a game, and meanwhile Sam Smith’s trying to find him a starting spot on a contender.
Feb.16 at 4:38 pm

Maybe Sam Smith picked up a misdemeanor possession charge we don’t know about, and getting Pip on a roster is his community service?

I saw a recent picture of Pippen on nba.com and I must admit that he looks every bit of 41 years old. You know MJ had to put the bug in his ear if you know what I mean. The last place Pip needs to go is Miami I mean they already have a solid senior citizen home with GP, Zo, Shaq, Eddie Jones, and Employee #8. Its funny cause Antoine Walker ain’t all that old he just plays like he’s 38. I just hope Reggie Miller don’t get any “bright” ideas.!?

Feb.16 at 6:42 pm
albie1kenobi says:
Boing, did you just mention Tim Hardaway? nice.
i envision pippen as a floor leader that initiates and directs plays on the offense, there’s no way he can keep up with the youngsters on defense, but will have enough knowledge and experience to improve the team defense in general. so a good fit for him would be a dangerous young team that needs veteran floor leadership, with a chance to win the ring. i don’t have time to see which team fits this bill (since i’m at work), but heat doesn’t need anymore old legs. on the flip, toronto may not be a bad idea, and lakers obviously has a good shot at him too.

Barkley’s comments from Vegas on Pippen were great. He pointed out that one retires because one cannot play and while one (Scotty) may feel better that doesn’t mean he is better. Charles added he only feels better because he is not playing. Charles’ interview was great…laughing at Hardaway’s comments and then saying how dumb it was for him to say that. Ripping on Pippen, promising to take Dick Baveta down and telling ESPN he will gamble whatever the creditors give him.

Harlem_World says:
The thing is, Pip knows his body can’t give him a full season at 41. BUT any aged/retired vet will tell you, on a good day, they can STILL go at a very high level. It’s the recovery and demand on going again the next night, and night after that etc that pretty much rules them out of playing on in their career. Jordan had a few classic nights in his Wiz run - but obviously could not play at that level every night because the body does not recuperate as quick when you age. Pip could certainly come in for a short period of time (ideally a playoffs scenario) and be of great help to a number of teams. Not bringing scoring (that was never his main strength anyway), but he could raise the IQ on the offensive and defensive end and improve a locker room on a number of teams. I do wonder why he’d even consider coming back to a team like Atlanta or anyone who is nowhere near contending. If he wants to come back, I say it’s on him. The fans don’t own him or his legacy, so all that talk of ‘ruining your career…nothing to gain’ etc is out of pocket. What he has done will always be respected and stand up in the history books. If he is able, and somebody wants him, he should be free to come back and enjoy the game (as long as it isn’t doing him too much harm). You can’t compare Barkley and Pip. Pip is the kind of athlete Barkley cannot ever relate to. Barkley has more fat in his bottom lip than Pip does in his whole body. I think it would make the right team interesting, and maybe give them the edge they need to get that much closer. Crazy as it sounds, I actually think he could be a big help on the Mavs, as he isn’t going to shoot much and will add some toughness and ‘glue’ type leadership they are lacking. Good mentor for Howard, good support for Dirk (help him get over the edge) and offer experience of past championships for a team that is right there and ready for the ring.

I’d love to see Pip bring his game to Phoenix. It would probably piss off Jalen Rose since he’s expecting them to use him in the playoffs, but Scottie could run the floor, play some D and hit some 3s.
Plus, he’d have Steve Nash who would make Scottie play like he was 5 years younger.
Feb.17 at 2:21 pm
Harlem_World says:
Nah Tariq, don’t get it twisted - Barkley is all good with me. I’m saying, from an athletic standpoint right now, its not something he can relate to. In his day, Barkley was probably the most freakishly talented athlete we’ve ever seen in the NBA, but it was natural. Pippen is more of a conditioned long-term athlete than barkley ever was, therefore he’s not going to be able to relate to where Pip’s body/conditioning may be. I’m not saying it’s all going to turn out successfully for Pip, but I have no doubt he could come back and be a good addition to someone’s bench and locker room even at age 41. Same way I wouldn’t be surprised if Malone could come back and do a job off the bench for someone, as he has always been a superior conditioned athlete.

Western_dream says:
The reasons he will go to miami are simple. They are mostly a team of older players who once were great. Except James Posey. But they all add to the value of the team. Pip would fit in well there with team mates he used to play against and a couple of young ‘uns. He can add something to a team like miami where a large percentage of the team is slowing down not only will he not get worn out as quickly, it just makes sense. Besides Kwame Brown plays for the lakers and Mike screwed him bad, how is Mike’s old team mate of 6 rings gonna make Kwame’s confidence soar.

People lets be honest. Pippen ain’t got shit on nobody in the f*cking league. He can’t shoot 3’s and he showed it today on SHOOTING STARS thing today. L.A don’t want him ’cause he is almost as old as Phil and he is going to take time away from Walton and Evans. Miami is not even thinking about him because he is too f*ucking old to play. If a team like Miami thinks you are old you must really be old besides, Pip won’t play better than Posey at this age. Posey is a better shooter and can play some D. The Suns don’t want him because he wont be able to go up and down the damn court as they do. They ain’t goin to slow down for a crappy player who is almost old enough to be my grandfather. Tim Hardaway should make a come back. Now, that would be a good idea. Specially because the league need him and his love for gay people. Tim Hardaway 4 president (I’m pretty sure that the country would rather have a hater as a president than our current one.)

Paolo says:
As much as people might want to dis him, Scottie Pippen is one the best players ever to play basketball. He has helped revolutionize the game. Look at all these names. Grant Hill. Penny Hardaway. Lebron James. Josh Howard. Kevin Garnett. Ron Artest. Andre Kirilenko. Boris Diaw. Shawn Marion. He was the first do-everything hybrid. The Point-Forward. The Best Defender Ever. The Quintessential Teammate. But that was then. This is now. Skeptics will say, “just stay home with your migraines, Pip!” And it might be valid. But for a team like the Lakers, Rockets, Heat, Spurs and Suns. He might be the difference. He’d help stabilize the Lakers with his moxie. He’d make the number 1 defense of Houston that much more air-tight. He’d help the Heat close the perimeter because James Posey forgot how to play. As with the Spurs. He’d be running the show in Phoenix when Mr. Nash takes a breather. Barbosa is a 2 not a 1. He can be all of these. But my money goes to the Lakers. He knows the system. He ran it. And Lamar Odom, Luke Walton and Mo Evans will only benefit from playing WITH him.As great as the Lakers have been this season, somehow, you get the feeling that things might fall apart because of their lack of true established names and games. Michael Jordan wasn’t able to get it done by himself. He needed Pippen. Right now, even at age 41, I think Kobe does, too.
Feb.20 at 12:33 am
iverson3215 says:
pippen is dynasy, one of the more underrated superstars due to playing on the same team as MJ and Rodman but they would not have done as well as they did without him, cuz Jordan will tell u quicker than anybody it takes a team to play the game not just one superstar which is why they did so well back in the day. for those of you who watched the all star weekend, as i assume most of you did, y’all saw he hasn’t completely lost his touch, based on how he played in that three man relay thing they did. i think even at 41 he’ll benefit any team he plays on.
Feb.20 at 12:38 am
Dennis says:
Did you see his shape during that shooting stars contest at all star weekend 07? He is still in shape, no flabs. I think Pip is doing it to “scratch an itch.” He was obviously not at the top of his game before. He had declined, but that is still better than the ones most teams currently have in their lineup. Will Pip succeed? The possiblity is there. And i think he will be a great fit for the Lakers. Yes, he knows the offense, it is not a running team, and absolutely no pressure because of the line up. You will be adding another role player with the experience. This i can’t wait to happen..

Gagge says:
Why all this hate? Pippen was a great player, who did it all. He defended like a man possesed, dished well and ran the offense, rebounded and scored well enough. SLAM doesn´t like the person Pippen, whom I don´t know. Even if he is a b***h, I gotta love the player he was. The player he IS, however, is a different story. I just say this: Good luck Scottie, you´re gonna need it. And I think he could fit in to most playoff teams, if he still has the juice to compete. I guess he ends up in LA, San Antonio, Phoenix or maybe even Houston(again).
Feb.20 at 1:23 pm
Larsylad says:
Lakers in the mix of teams hoping to land Kidd. Pippen talking about helping you teams and playing point forward. And Jax, off course… He would come in expecting to play limited minutes and the box score wouldn’t give the slightest hint of what he would really bring to the Lakers. Not his own box score at least. He will help younger players with knowledge and experince before, during and after games. Being who he is, cats wil listen. Welcome, Pip.
Feb.20 at 3:07 pm
Dan says:
Let’s just be realistic. People are name-dropping with teams such as the Raptors, Heat, and the Lakers. Not to say that miracles can’t happen in the second half, but if Scottie does make a return to the L, there is no way that he is going to come back to a team that isn’t a title contender. Not that I am saying the Heat don’t have chance to repeat. . . Wait a minute, yes I am. I think a major factor in this decision has to do with Webber moving back to Michigan; he, just like Pippen, wants to play for a team that has a good shot at taking the whole thing. Sorry to rain on you Kobe and D-Wade fans parades, but the Heat and Lakers are about as likely to win the ‘chip as the ABA is to sign a national T.V. deal. . .
Feb.21 at 1:56 am
Clay says:
Dan, Miami is a sleeping giant. I’m not sayin’ they are going to win the whole thing with ease but I’m giving them a very good chance to win back2back. 1. The east sucks: who is going to beat them? Cavs? Pistons? Maybe… not likely though. They will have to play the Mavs or the Suns. I think they would rather play the Mavs… but my point is they will only have to play 1 really good team in the playoffs and that would be in the finals!
And Gray, Pip is 42… if he thinks he can contribute to a team, why doesn’t he think about a coaching career? seriously man! he needs let the whole playing thing go.
