Player of the D.A.Y.

Starting the New Year off with a quirky one.

By Sam Rubenstein

Only 4 teams played last night, and those two games weren’t exactly Dallas-Phoenix big. In fact, if Minny-Charlotte and Portland-Boston played as part of a regular slate of games, I’d probably bury their summaries way at the bottom. Kevin Garnett had 32 and 14 in the win, hitting the big shot, doing everything you could ask of him. Not good enough. There are bigger factors at play here.

The Player of the D.A.Y. is the boss of the Player’s Association, Billy Hunter. He didn’t do anything last night, but this battle was fought and won months ago. David Stern’s new ball said good night and the round leather came back to us. Any player can go out and have a big night, beating another NBA team. Billy Hunter won a battle with the commish who does not ever take an L. A landmark victory, really. Bravo.
