Kobe Bryant Hates Argentians
So he elbows them in the face.
Just checking in today. We’re deep in the midst of SLAM 107 here at the SLAM Dome, and I’ve been reading and writing all day. I wasn’t going to post anything today, but I kind of accidentally ended up reading through the websites I always go through, so I figured if I had time for that I have time to write a little something here
OK, so Kobe probably doesn’t really hate Argentinians, but he did whack Manu pretty good on that play. Kobe’s hoping to play tonight, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. The NBA is the NBA, superstar or not. Stu Jackson may not have any idea what he’s doing, but D-Stern has his back. Kobe is probably going to made to sit around the Ritz tonight and watch the game on MSG. Was Kobe trying to hurt Manu? I seriously doubt it. But what happened, happened.
Oh, and shout out to the Bynum Brigade guys for sending along a couple of Bynum Brigade shirts. We gave the Bynum Brigade a shoutout in SLAM a few issues back, and the fellas at the Brigade came through in a big way. Hopefully they’ll give SLAM a shoutout on their webpage now. (Hint, hint!)
Anything else? Eddie Jones has been let go by the Grizzlies, and the Miami Heat are supposedly interested. That would be a nice story — EJ returning to Miami — but come on, do the Heat really need a another older dude?
Finally, the All-Star reserves are going to be announced Thursday. I’ve already heard that Joe Johnson wants it bad, but I don’t know if the other coaches will punish him because he plays for a team where the GM is afraid to make any moves and the head coach doesn’t allow him to come off screens and yet he’s still averaging 25 ppg. Hopefully they don’t hold it against him.

The NBA clearly went too far by suspending Kobe. I watched that game and it was obviously an accident.

Tommy Patron says:
Kobe totally did that s*%t on purpose. Have you ever shot a jumpshot? Have you EVER flung your shooting hand/arm as hard as you could down and out to the right before you came down from the shot? It’s the same deal as Jason Terry punching people in the balls in last year’s playoffs. Both of those guys are cream puffs as far as I’m concerned.

Okay, I change my mind. He did do it on purpose.

Detroit1 says:
Yep, that looked pretty intentional to me, regardless of what KB says….
Jan.30 at 5:56 pm
Sparker says:
i saw it too and i thought it looked intentional. on the replay, u could see that the spurs assistant coach who was closest to the play/ and was the first to come to manu’s aid/ clearly thought bryant did it on purpose (i think he even barked something at him). kb also had this “who me?” look on his face that seemed really phoney. and wasn’t bryant accused of doing stuff like this before (ie. clearing space after he shoots)… by that kid raja bell? i guess stu and davey remembered.

George says:
i was lookin at the video and it looks like manu smacks KB in the face first then KB reacts with the swing of his arm. kobe should not be suspended but if he is then manu should be to. clearly manu hit him first and if there was like 5 min or something still in the game a foul would have been called on both.

It was consensual - Manu told me I could put my elbow there.

Kobe knew his shot was blocked - wasn’t he just trying to clear to get the ball back? … You guys really think he was trying to hit Manu in the face beacuse he was mad at him for blocking his shot?
Jan.30 at 6:34 pm
allenp says:
didn’t look like he was trying to hit manu in the face. Looked like he was flaying his arms to get a foul cause he just got an important shot blocked cleanly.
Jan.30 at 6:36 pm
Aaron says:
Kobe just does things like that. I don’t think it’s shocking when other players get pissed at him because he throws bows. Manu has been known to flop of course but that was a clear cut cheap shot and the suspension is warrented.

Can you f$%king believe it. I get one live game a week on UK TV. What’s on tonight? Knicks vs Lakers. With no Kobe. Now I’m gonna sit up ’til 4am, and the best I can hope for is a Nate Robinson block or dunk? A globally televised game, where the star appeal is ‘a club handed dwarf’. Thank you David Stern, thank you very much.
Jan.30 at 6:55 pm
FLUXLAND says:
elbow? what elbow? there was no elbow..either way i think it was intentional in the sense he was trying to draw a foul … not intentional trying to decapitate Manu “the human crash test dummy” Ginobili
Jan.30 at 6:59 pm
coach says:
more like kobe hates floppers !
Jan.30 at 7:08 pm
Reggie Evans says:
He was trying to clear out so he could be the first to get to the ball after it was blocked. How is that a “cheap shot”? If Ginobili is in the air, and instead, Kobe hit’s Manu’s chest, would that be an offensive foul? Yes, he hit his face, but was he AIMING for that? We will never know …

DP says:
Who Cares! I hate Manu because to me all he does is go straight to the goal and try to run over people like a dang linebacker. Who cares if KB hit him. It was a dumb ass supension and it wasn’t even called for. As for Micheal Finley, he is going to forever regret the day he went to San Antonio over Dallas. play wit it.
Jan.30 at 7:59 pm
mike says:
i saw that game and after the play was over kobe was about to walk back to the bench but, seeing manu on the ground, he went to check on him…..clearly an accident. btw kobe has changed for the better

silly suspension, and im not sure joe johnson should make the all-star team…though he is a viable option. my eastern reserves are: kidd, carter, d. howard, j’oneal, pierce, redd, and okafor.

Simmy Sosa says:
Give me a break with all that flop bull$h*t, because Ginobili didn’t invent it. He’s damn good at knowing what move the player is going to make, and he beats them to it. In a league that caters to agressive offensive talents like DWade, Kobe, LBJ, etc. drawing a charge is one of the only ways left to counter great scorers. True basketball fans know that Ginobili is the ultimate competitor, willing to score the ball, pass the ball, steal the ball, take the charge, shoot the J, rebound the ball, whatever it takes to win. Ginobili is a true world champion people. recognize. p.s.
nobody said $h*t when Fisher took charges
Jan.30 at 9:59 pm
Simmy Sosa says:
BTW, Kobe definitely did that $h*t on purpose. I don’t know why he’s surprised it happened. Everyone knew he was shooting that ball. He’s a poor sport…

I just don’t like Manu, too many flops, and the refs go for all of them. I just turned on the 7 o’clock news and their was a clip of George Karl Going off on this reporter,it might be on you tube. Also AI will miss Denvers next game at portland.

Chief says:
Manu went down harder than i think he really should have. kobe was just just enforcing some discipline man. You have to do that sometimes.
Jan.30 at 10:55 pm
Mr.100 says:
Yes you do have to enforce disipline every once and a while, but Manu almost deserves it!
Jan.30 at 11:16 pm
Patrick says:
not only did manu deserve it, but kobe could just as easily been trying to “box out” to get the ball back. that or trying to draw a foul call, david stern is hitler.
Jan.30 at 11:29 pm
NANCY says:
I think this is rediculous ! Kobe should be able to play unless he actually maims someone.
Jan.31 at 12:28 am
Hector Arteaga says:
I did not watch the game as soon as I realised that Kobe had been suspended for that. That’s my protest, we pay to watch these players, yet one of the best was suspended. That is total bs. That did not warrant a suspension. You can say that regardless of your liking of Kobe.
Jan.31 at 1:10 am
Simmy Sosa says:
What the hell does Ginobili deserve a busted nose for? Playing great defense, beating players to their spots and drawing fouls, or are you all upset that he stopped Kobe from hitting another clutch shot. People talk so much trash about Manu, but there isn’t a team in the world that doesn’t want a player like him. For all the crap Karl and the Nuggets had to say about Ginobili, summer 2005 Denver flew Ginobili in with hopes of signing him as a free agent. Why? because he is an NBA/World Champion that knows how to play winning basketball. Stop hating…
Jan.31 at 2:29 am
Co Co says:
Joe should be an All-Star for the simple fact that unlike the Lebron’s and D Wade’s and Kobe’s of the world, he actually has to make his shots to get points beause the ref’s don’t call fouls for him at all. He’s no D Wade, but in the grand scheme of things the Heat have only won 4 more games than the Hawks. Go Joe!

Russ Bengtson says:
Made for a great game at the Garden tonight. When they announced that Kobe wouldn’t be playing due to suspension, the boos were quite loud. Nothing like keeping the (arguably) best wing player in the L out on his only trip to (arguably) the biggest media market. Thanks, Stu!
Jan.31 at 11:33 am
Benedict says:
It was completely unintentional, as Kobe, being Kobe, was fishing for the foul and flailed his hands. Manu got the bitter hand of those long arms.
Jan.31 at 12:17 pm
Lang Whitaker says:
I don’t know about completely unintentional. I understand that Manu can flop with the best of them, but on 99.9 percent of his jumpers Kobe’s right arm doesn’t jut out from his shooting form. I agree that he wasn’t trying to hurt Manu, but he did swing his arm at him and give him a bloody nose.

Redrum says:
Kobe got him, on purpose or not, it does not matter. His elbow had not job being there, and I guess the NBA wants to protect its players form dangerous play, intentional or not. I think it is a good policy. If you wanna talk about elbowing, chack this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg_ktTJvxYY talk about on purpose… he almost ripped his head off. it is from the Greece - Brazil game

That BynumBrigade logo is genius.
FTW! Bones Brigade forever.
Jan.31 at 2:13 pm
Reggie Evans says:
Ginobili was behind Kobe by the time Kobe’s arm swung back. Manu blocks the back half of the ball, and his momentum carries him behind Kobe, to the the side. Kobe must have eyes in the back of his head, or really good ancipation of where a defender’s head will be as he (Kobe) is descending from his shot.
Jan.31 at 2:16 pm
Norway says:
I’m not a big fan of Kobe… But I just can’t believe he would smack a guy in the face just for blocking his shot. I’m guessing he was surprised being blocked, and his arm just flew out as a reflex.
If you suspend the guy, you should know for certain it was intentional.
By the way…. Old man Eddie Jones still has some left in his tank. He’ll make a nice contribution come playoff time.
Jan.31 at 4:42 pm
albie1kenobi says:
for someone who honed his shooting form to become picture perfect (remember he couldn’t shoot when he came into the league), such an awkward unnatural motion is highly unlikely unintentional.
as of the intention, i really don’t care, be it going for the blocked ball or hurting ginobili or simply drawing a foul. i’m stoic when it comes to kobe the person. i like watching him as a basketball machine and marvel at such amazing specimen.
Jan.31 at 4:51 pm
Galo says:
he was trying to call a foul there. like when players smack the ball out of your hands when you’re trying to get the J up, and then go waving their arms like crazy for the refs to notice. accident. btw, Manu got skills. dont hate.
Jan.31 at 5:25 pm
Julian says:
i was about the same thing as Galo. whenever a player is fouled or blocked during his jumpshot they always expressively fling their arms out, especially kobe! he’s done it a million times. why this is warranted a suspension, i dont know. completely accidental.
Jan.31 at 9:06 pm
andacagar says:
I’m from Argentina and i support Manu but he pulled off some futbol (soccer) acting in that one. Kobe was just clearing space. It was a foul but not no suspension.
Feb.1 at 12:04 am
Elyse says:
Ok, for those of you who think it was intentional, and for those of you who don’t (myself)… this is a bad suspension because it is inconsistent with all other calls. What about last year when kobe had to get stiches above his eye from an intentional elbow via mike miller? True, kobe retaliated, but wouldn’t that play have to be reviewed under this standard too? Basketball is a contact game, on the last play, falling out of bounds trying to take a game winner and get the ball back Kobe would take his time to maliciously smack Manu? That does not makes sense…isn’t it more likely that he through his arm out in desperation to try to get a foul call?

Kobe was obviously trying to jump back up and grab the ball before the time ran out. Watch any basketball player’s arm motion when they jump up. Matter of fact try jumping up yourself. Nuff Said. Fire Stu Jackson.
He’s still mad that Steve didn’t want play for the Grizzles

who cares? it’s a physical sport. So what if he wacked him in the face. Raja clotheslined Kobe last year. Kobe got up and went back to work.

John says:
Ginobili is the NBA’s biggest “flopper”, if anyone looks at him the wrong way he’ll throw himself on the floor and probably get a black eye. He’s made a career in the NBA as a soccer player, he just launches himself on the floor and starts rolling on the floor until they call a foul.

Stan Reynolds says:
Manu, one year later, does the SAME EXACT arm swing and hits none other than Kobe Bean Bryant in the face last night. Ginobili even bloodied his arm in doing so. Yet NOT a single word from the ESPN crew or national media about it. Hypocrisy at it’s best, and sadly quite pathetic by the NBA. Maybe Slamonline will mention the irony??? Yeah, I doubt that too. Kobe has a target on his back, even from the league he makes so much money for.
