Jason Kidd is grabbing 8 boards per game

The Nets leading rebounder is their point guard. Great for Jason or bad for the team?

By Sam Rubenstein

I have been to four Nets home games this year. They are 0-4 in those games. Not a good basketball team. I was at the Houston game with SLAM Senior Writer Alan Paul, where the Nets were embarrased in front of their home fans. The biggest surprise of the evening was when they put Jason Kidd’s numbers on display, and he was grabbing more than 8 rebounds per game. He leads the team, and their second leading rebounder, Nenad Krstic, is out for the year. Some people whom have fewer rebounds per game than Kidd include: Big Z, Samuel Dalembert, LeBron, Memo Okur, and Eddy Curry.

Some of Jason’s rebounding numbers come from his not having a teammate interested in taking those boards from him. He’s grabbed 7.5 boards per game in years past, but he’s supposed to be slowing down and paying fewer minutes to rest up. Not being forced to take on more and more responsibility. I honestly thought that his rebounding average was a typo, that they might have switched it with assists. Guess not. Mikki Moore, Jason Collins, there are rebounds available for you. Of course Jersey is tied with Toronto for the 3 seed as I write this. I guess my point if I have one is that Jason Kidd has a lot of rebounds.

Incredible, the man had the dreaded MICROFRACTURE procedure and runs the offense, defends 1’s and 2’s and he leads the team on rebounds? Those players with the springs on that nets team (yes, VC and Richard, you guys) should be ashamed, not to mention their so called frontcourt. Rebounding is about will, anticipation and effort. Kidd is a superb b-ball specimen!

The man’s practically averaging a triple double.

There is the fact that Jason Collins is THE WORST STARTER IN THE NBA. Something John Hollinger’s numbers and I agree on wholeheartedly.

I looked it up, and his first year with the Nets Jason had roughly the same rebounding numbers as team leader KEITH VAN HORN and there was another time post-Kenyon when he led the team. Never at 8-plus every night though.

Maybe there’s a curse on Nets leading rebounders? Who have they been since Jayson Williams? KVH is out of the League, Kenyon Martin has had nothing but (knee) trouble. Jason should probably lay off and let someone else go down.

You posed the question: “Good for Kidd or bad for the team?” The answer, simply, is “bad for the team”. But you knew that already…

Yeah sure, it’s less than ideal to have a 6′4 guy out-rebounding everyone of his high-tower teammates, but as far as rebounding go - it does come down to the team effort. Sure, they stink but that damn sure has to do with more than rebounding (and Mr. Collins), I hope.
