Bucks-Nuggets trade

The Squirrel and Answer backcourt ends

By Sam Rubenstein

ESPN’s Marc Stein (who is still afraid of the monster D30 that’s going to send everyone’s Power Rankings running for their lives) reports a trade between the Nuggets and Bucks. Milwaukee has been losing scorers left and right, so they’re bringing in E.A.R.L., who can light up the scoreboard, shoots like a maniac every time he enters a game. Fun player, not the best fit with A.I. They’re also getting Harlem’s finest, Julius Hodge, who got shot after a Juelz Santana concert last year and has scored all of 6 points in 9 minutes this season. Denver receives cap room (made possible by the Bobby Simmons injury exception) and Steve Blake, a pure point guard who took Bassy’s starting job in Portland last year and now gets to back up Iverson.

It’s not a bad trade either way. Steve Kerr must be pissed though. What do you think of this trade?

I like this. I’ve been watching Denver whenever I can and Boykins will not be getting shots or touches when Carmelo and JR Smith are on the court together with Iverson. Blake nows how to run a team and is gonna rep Miami High deep into the playoffs.

that backcourt was too small. mismatches everywhere, as GINOBILLLLLLLLI showed yesterday

This was clearly a salary dump by Denver, but it does help them by eliminating one of their scorers and replacing him with a pure point- if there is such a thing in today’s NBA. For the Bucks, it give them a scoring punch to get them these hard times without Redd, Mo Williams, and Villanueva, but what will this team look like when those guys return? They will still have a completely undersized backcourt. Will Boykins opt out of his contract after this season?

I think Denver will benefit more because of Steve Blake’s pass first mind set and if Boykins stay, there will have cap problems and too many scorers: JR Smith, AI and Melo. I think they are going to go small with Camby in the middle. I see Blake and Iverson at guard, with Smith and Carmelo at forward and Camby in the middle. They are going to play just like the Suns do and the West will be fun to watch, if steve wasn’t as expected, evans might get the startinf F position with Melo. Denver will have a good run in the playoffs this season. MARK MY WORDS

I don’t like the trade. i understand the concerns about the size of the backcourt, but Boykins is a game changer. Who will step up and give them that scoring puch off the bench. I think they should have waited until everyone was back to see how it goes and then weigh their options during the summer. A so-called, pure point guard is not always needed and A.I. has proven since he’s been there that he is willing to pass the rock.

hartadi says:
i agree with dblizzy, when ai is having an offnight, boykins will be the perfect option for sub. that dude seriously got game and he plays smart. coach karl can’t just blame denver’s backcourt for size disadvantage. he should wait till melo suspension ends and adjust.

Jas says:
They should’ve kept Boykins. He’s shown he can play with Iverson and more than earned the right to start alongside him, even with JR back on board. No team can match up with them speed-wise. Considering they have no real firepower coming off the bench it was a trade they might come to regret, especially if JR gets injured.

Johnny Mann says:
I agree. I mean it’s not like Steve Blake is all world. They want someone to pass the ball. So they give up their firestarter off the bench. Luxury tax moves are a b*tch.

The Bucks just did sexy time in Denver’s mouf. As a die-hard, watch every Bucks game type fan, trust me when I say that Blake has been god awful this season. Or don’t. Just look at the numbers. He’s averaging 3.5ppg and 2.7 apg in 17.7 mpg. Double that to starter minutes to get a true idea of how much that sucks. He’s also shooting 35% from the field and 28% from 3. And, those %’s are way worse than they seem, because Blake has only shot completely wide open shots. Also, Blake has neither the mentality nor the quickness to be effective in Denver’s full court game. The Squirrel has some clear problems with his game…but the Bucks are without the 4 guys (Redd, Williams, Villanueva, Simmons) that they imagined at the beginning of the season would lead them in scoring. Injuries have left the Bucks with some solid role players (Bogut, Patterson, Skinner, Bell) playing big-time minutes. All of those guys are solid rotation players, but no one would call any of them “scorers”. The Bucks can use every bit of Boykins shoot first mentality. And, at 3M per he’s a relative value.

Watching the game last night, I thought Earl looked out of place, one too many gunners. Does the Squirrel + the Bucks = Rocky N Bullwinkle? Bogut a bit like a freakin mountie, too.

ATrain says:
Love the deal for my Bucks. Blake contributed nothing and last night’s game showed Milwaukee’s injuries have caused an overall lack of offense. At the very least it shows team officials aren’t giving up on the season yet, which I respect.

I’m still too startled by David Beckham getting $250 million from the L.A. Galaxy to even think about NBA trades.

rob stewart says:
I love earl but he is a bad fit with A.I. i’ve always thought Steve Blake has a lot of potential. maybe a poor man’s Ridnour.

Russ Bengtson says:
New nickname for Earl: “Buck .50″?

Myk says:
Rocky N Bullwinkle nice one LOL…

Tyquan says:
This is a decent trade for both teams cause Earl Boykins can start right away since the Bucks’ best four players are hurt. Steve Blake is a okay fit with Denver because he seems to be a good passer and a decent shooter. I think if the Bucks get healthy on time they could be the sleeper in the east. However, they better hope C-Webb don’t sign with the Pistons.

Jan.11 at 7:40 pm

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
“A poor man’s Ridnour”? Not the highest praise imaginable, that… I’m with Boom Boom and DBLIZZY on this trade; don’t like it. Everyone knows Denver will need a big, pass-first pg at some point, but Steve Blake is not that guy, for the reasons outlined by Boom. His numbers and especially percentages are horrible, just horrible, and there’s no real reason to expect them to go up anytime soon. You just don’t trade a guy averaging 15.2 points and 4.3 assists in 28.3 minutes for a guy averaging 3.6 points and 2.5 assists in 17.6 minutes. You don’t do it, unless you’re dumping salary. Maybe The Nuggets still have have some tricks up their sleeve, but I’m not convinced. Bad move, which might really hurt them in the playoffs.

Jan.11 at 10:33 pm

Troy Dallas says:
They just disrespected boykins with this trade. They coud’ve gotten better for boykins. C’mon, you want a pass first pg and you get steve blake?? seriously. I dont think they did some research, cuz there are only 2 good pass first pgs, and one of them passes cuz he cant shoot. boykins for foye would have made more sense, or boykins for livingston(if someone on the clippers was smoking some of that sticky, it could work)

Jan.11 at 10:43 pm

Drew says:
As someone who has gone to most of the Nuggets games this year, I won’t miss Boykins. He can shoot, and he is fun to watch. But after a while, you realize that the guy never passes the rock. And I mean never. Alongside AI, he was too small, and other teams took advantage of that. Bottom line is that Earl can shoot, but that is all he does, and he is a ball hog like no one else in the league.

Jan.12 at 1:44 am

Kevin says:
It woulda made more sense for Denver to wait till Melo’s back, but they couldn’t. Milwakee, taking on most of the salary, gets a salary exeption for Bobby Simmons, BUT, it ends on Friday…. so Milwakee had to do it today or not at all. Denver’s hand was forced.

Jan.12 at 1:47 am

Kevin says:
Also, is Beckham the highest paid athlete in the world now? A million a week? wtf?

Jan.12 at 4:51 am

Air Up There says:
That trade is just plain stupid… the Nuggets are smoking something serious for sure, ’cause you don’t just trade a guy like boykins for blake. Even if you ignore their numbers (which is hard, i know, cause it is sooooo lopsided), blake just doesnt fit in denver. And Hodge had potential, it was just taking him a while to reach it… i hate this trade

Jan.12 at 11:40 am

oliver says:
Personally i think this is a great trade for the Nuggets- dump some salary and get a really good , servicable young point who can lead a team and play alongside Iverson if the need be-
Blake/Smith, iverson, Carmelo, Kenyon and Camby - thats the starting five nxt yr and a little bit of cap to get another swingman in the offseason-
thats gotta be a fave for the title-

EARL WASNT GOING TO GET SHOTS WHEN MELO COES BACK, MY BUCKS NEEDED A SCORER, THEIR 4.3 MIL INJURY EXEMPTION EXPIERS TODAY, AND COACH KARL DIDN’T WANT TO GIVE UP EARL, MANAGEMENT DID

Jan.13 at 2:24 am

Stuie says:
This is a weak trade for both teams. The bucks need a key player who can lead the team not a average starter. It just helps the nuggets by freeing up cap sapce and hurts the bucks with getting only ok players in return when they needed to save their cap space. There is one upside for bucks fans. Atleat Earl Boykins is better than steve Blake

Jan.13 at 12:09 pm

baller says:
I believe this is a good decision.earl boykins will not get playing time like he use to.Allen iverson, melo,jr smith are going to light the night up.the bucks need him anyway.the trade is a good idea.

Jan.13 at 3:52 pm

BlueSpeck says:
I know its only one game, but in his debut with the Nuggets last night, Blake played with about 1000x more confidence and belief in himself that I have NOT seen since he played his final game with Portland last spring. As if it is more of a relief than a burden for him to have been sent away from Milwaukee.

Jan.13 at 4:52 pm

Gilbert0 says:
I think the trade was good for both Teams cuz AI and Melo take up most of the salary cap and its a good think for the bucks cuz they need a good player like Earl Boykins.
