Zeke Lives!

For now…

by Marcel Mutoni

Told y’all he was smart.

MSG chairman James Dolan, in his first public comments since naming Isiah Thomas head coach of the Knicks, came out and said that Isiah’s job is safe until at least the last day of the regular season. I can only imagine the amount of joy this bit of news brings to Knicks fans everywhere.

Though I’m as guilty as anyone of taking shots at Isiah, I’m reasonable enough to recognize that all things considered, his coaching stint in New York so far hasn’t gone as horrifically as it could have. How’s that for a ringing endorsement?

In the Leastern Conference, the Knicks at 8-15, sit only 2.5 games out of a playoff spot. They have an All-Star in Eddy Curry; Renaldo Balkman has been a pleasant surprise off the bench; Nate Robinson, despite (ahem) lapses in judgment, has been solid; David Lee has doubled his scoring average; and Q-Rich, Steve Francis and Jamal Crawford have all been reliable contributors in stretches.

Now, despite having reached 35% of the victory total from last year (just over a month into the new season), this remains a very flawed team that’s probably not going anywhere. For now, mostly because management really doesn’t have that many other options, they’re not going to blow it up; they’re just going to wait until spring arrives to do it.

“I believe that we will be sitting here at the end of the season saying, ‘Obviously, we need to keep Isiah.’ I believe that, but I’m not committed to that.” (James L. Dolan)

Great, Dolan is the new Punxsutawney Phil & it looks like it’s going to be a long winter.

“You also have to take into account what the alternative is,” Dolan said. “If what you’re saying is that we haven’t made enough progress and that’s really true, then what you’re really saying is that we have to restart again. That would essentially mean blowing up this organization in terms of who’s working here, bringing in a new philosophy of play with a new coach. That’s pretty drastic.”
Cool. Do it.

Blow it up and start over now, blow it up and start over in six months, I guess it’s academic. But wouldn’t it be better to get on the right track NOW? I don’t even pay for my seats, and I don’t want to watch this mess anymore. But hey, Eddy Curry’s averaging 20ppg! Isn’t everything fantastic? (I think I feel a column brewing…)

good article, abit generous to Nate but good one.
i also believe Thomas has coached solidly , only ol’skool B-Ball heads will notice what he’s done thus far. now, just imagine Channing when he clicks with this team - OOHHH!

The entire Atlantic Division should be relegated to the D-League. I’d rather watch Roanoake and Greenville at this point.

I like that Russ whole atlantic division. Get rid of the nets too all of them. Take all the good players out of each team and move them to Las Vegas baby! Imagine that VC, Kidd, RJ, P double, AI?, CHRIS BOSH!, Eddy Curry, Q, Stevie franchise (hope for a comeback of sorts)MoPete ah now struggling. I know this is stupid but why isnt atlanta in the atlantic division. It just makes sense. Except the obvious location difference. Bad team (for now) bad conference, and more importanly you can’t spell atlantic without atlant(a)
