The passive-aggressive genius of Mark Cuban

It’s not whining if you take subliminal shots

By Sam Rubenstein

I’ll admit I was bordering on hating on Mark Cuban for a minute. The youtube-google whining, the constant presence during the Finals, the talking down to people approach to writing. I was done reading the guy. But ever since the NBA has been trying to Cuban-proof itself, he has been taking the sneaky route in his blogging and I respect that. Check out this post about Tim Duncan. He goes on and on lavishing praise on Duncan, explaining just how great he is, and then comes the following paragraphs:

So in the interest of helping future NBA players out there, and in maybe helping other teams possibly figure out TD just a little bit, I decided to post a video of the new move that Tim added last year, and has improved on this year. I call it the Duncan Chop. Its perfectly legal, which makes it postiively brilliant.. Its something every post player should add to their game.

Simply put, as Duncan turns over his left shoulder towards the basket, he “chops” away the defenders arm. It sometimes throws the defender off balance a little. It sometimes misdirects the defenders attention. Its subtle enough to give TD an edge. All in all its a great, great move. We all should learn from it.

Genius, Mr. Cuban. GENIUS! The hidden message is that this is NOT a legal move, but Mark isn’t saying that it’s illegal. He goes in completely the opposite direction, so it’s up to the reader to figutre out the message. He’s got video of the chop so you can see for yourself. Cubes, you’re back!

Cuban should open a ‘whinery’
I kid, I kid
He has an elite team, his superstar benefits from the same calls other perimeter scorers get and he still has to whine.
It’s funny, the only time I ever see other elite teams’ (Pistons, Spurs, Heat) owners are when they are accepting trophies or passing out rings.

Cuban’s ego is bigger than the billions he made off of Yahoo when he sold broadcast.com to them. He’s always telling everyone that questions him that they should go to business school. If they question his basketball knowledge, he deflects the question and says that (his employees) Avery Johnson and Del Harris have tons of it. He also recently gave the Youtube guys some “tax advice.” Cuban is mostly entertaining and he does make good points about Gootube but he’s reached blowhard status. More than anything else, that’s probably why other NBA owners dislike him. Some of them made their fortunes in more conventional ways (and also from scratch) without having to rub it into other people’s faces. If he took a more measured approach to relaying his ideas, he’d probably be better-respected. The thing is, he’s attained the American dream by becoming a billionaire off of his own hard work and perseverance (and probably also owing to Yahoo’s stupidity) without having been a exceptionally-gifted student himself or having had many other advantages (family connections ala George W. Bush and good looks, among other things). So, yeah, he’s earned himself the right to give anyone and everyone the proverbial finger. A few billion will get you that.
