Chinese Hoops Report: God Shammgod
Alan Paul catches up with God Shammgod…all the way in China.
By Alan Paul
I traveled from my home in Beijing to TaiYuan, Shanxi Province the other day to take in a CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) game. I was catching up with God Shammgod, the great point guard with the better name who played at U-Providence for two years before entering the Draft. He played a year for the Wizards, then set off on a multi-year international hoops journey which he still hopes will lead him back to the NBA. Sham is a great guy and you will be learn much, much more about him in a future SLAM issue. Suffice it to say he is an awesome guy who still has game.
I watched Shamm’s Shanxi squad – the worst team in the CBA – play the Guangdong Tigers, the three-time defending champs and by far the league’s best team. One fact sums it all up – Shanxi has one National Team member while Guangdong boasts five, including pg Chen Jianghua and pf Yi Jianlin, China’s top two young players and definitely the two guys most likely to make it to the NBA. If the names sound familiar, it’s probably because I have done short pieces on both in SLAM in the last year.
The atmosphere in the Shanxi arena was pretty electric, owing almost entirely to the presence of Guangdong, who are treated like the ‘96 Bulls here. Maybe even moreso because of all the National Team members – that is the only team everyone in China really cares about. So there were people milling about outside the arena, with big flags and drums, hours before tipoff, plus scalpers milling about and lines of fans outside the hotel waiting for autographs (both teams were staying in a real dump right across from the arena, as was I.)
I rode the bus across the street with Shanxi and hung out with Shamm and chatted as he laced up and got ready to roll. The place probably holds about 5-6,000 and was not bad. Both teams spent a fair amount of time doing regular, lazy shooting as the arena filled up. Then they all gathered around and did choreographed stretches, with much more military precision that you would see from an American team…and that was just the beginning. Each squad then did coordinated drills, running Z formations, high-stepping to the half court line and back, and the like.
There are stringent rules about how much foreigners can play – a total of five quarters per game for both guys combined. It’s not really an issue for Guangdong. Because of their strength, Americans Jason Dixon and Terrance Green are role players. But Shanxi is so weak that they really need Shamm on the floor. His teammate Rashid Byrd doesn’t offer so much and that’s being kind. Actually, he is now a former teammate since he left the squad within two days of this game after a series of disagreements. He is a 7-foot plus center (hence the nickname Seven and Sum Change, which is what he went by as a player for And 1) who has some real skills but not a lot of desire.
When I discussed ‘Shid with his coach he made an ugly face, then made his fingers into a zero and held it up near his temple. Through the transalator he said, “If Rashid listened and played like Shammgod, we would be much better.” No doubt.
Anyhow, were I the coach of this sorry bunch I would without a doubt play Shammgod four quarters, but I’m not and he didn’t. Shamm started on the bench and by the time he came in to start the second quarter his team was down 41-19. They all perked up with Shamm on the floor and the play got a lot less raggedy, but the outcome was already determined.
Shammgod looked good. He still has the handle that you remember if you ever watched him at Providence and he had a series of great drives, where he either finished or drew double or triple coverage then dished it off. He had six assists in the quarter and finished with about 12, but that only barely reflects how well he played; you can’t get an assist if no one else on your team can make a shot, and he dropped perfect passes to wide open guys under the basket only to see them fumbled away or bricked more times than I could count.
Yi and Chen both look good and like legit prospects. Yi finished with 36 points and close to 20 boards. He is stronger than I thought, quite athletic, has good court sense and is a little more street than I thought. Byrd tried to intimidate him with pushes and bows and Yi gave it right back. It’s still a little hard for me to gauge his NBA potential because he was a man amongst boys. If he can maintain that attitude and aggression against guys as big or bigger than him, he is going to be very good. Point guard Chen is supposedly only 17 or so but birthdates of the players here are notoriously suspect. I’d say he’s 19 or 20 and he looks legit too.
Chen is very quick, but under control, has a great handle, is confident and seems to have really good instincts. He and hahmm were a good matchup. Chinese players do not get the greatest coaching and often have trouble really developing their games but Chen is lucky to be from Guangdong and in the best possible place. I am definitely going to keep my eye on him and hope he continues to grow, both literally (he is probably 6-1 and could use 2-3 inches) and hoops-wise.
The final score doesn’t really matter but the margin was close to 40. After the game, I was waiting for Shamm in the hallway ourtside the locker room , a place filled with smoke as people were puffing away. Chen came out and I introduced myself and we chatted as best we could. His English is even more limited than my Chinese and I’m not sure he understands Mandarin all that well, speaking a Guangdong dialect instead. But he understood who I was and said, “Thank you, thank you.”
Rashid came out and I followed him, figuring it was time to go back. Later I would learn that the team owner – a lunatic who sits on the bench berating the refs and telling the coach when to make subs – was talking the team for over an hour but Rashid told him to f*ck off and left. We rode back together on the Guangdong team bus. I was right in the front looking out, and there were hordes of people trying to get close to the vehicle, waving, screaming “Yi Jianlin!” and taking pictures.
We rumbled through traffic across the street. The area right in front of the door was blocked by a truck so we had to park a little bit down the street. The crowds of people waiting there for autographs had time to rush over and crush against the door, screaming “Yi Jianlin!” The team translator said to another American on board, “You take the back and I’ll take the front. Put your shoulder down and push.” I walked off the bus right in front of them and a huge surge clawed at Yi. They followed the plan and just bulled through. It was pretty wild and damn aggressive. A lot of people were asking me for autographs, which I thought was funny. I actually signed a few from people who were persistent even when I said Chinese something approximating, “You don’t want me.” I signed a jacket, a T shirt and several programs.
Then I threw my stuff in the room and went out for a late night McDonald’s dinner with Terrance and Jason. Rashid was pouting in his room and poor Shamm was stuck in that meeting.

I remember watchin God in the tourney close to 10 years ago, breakin people with that move where he crossed the ball left to right, fakin right, but then catchin it with his left and goin back left(i think, i tried to copy it but never could!). He was pullin mixtape moves in probably the biggest games of his life, but he couldn’t shoot for shit tho… Still, i’d take God over Croshere any day of the week

Hi guys. No people here don’t suck but there is a radically uneven distribution of talent. And same could be said of the management. The management of the Shanxi team makes the worst NBA owners you can think of seem like geniuses. It is really too bad Shamm has not gotten a second shot.. when you see guys like Kevin Ollie and Milt Palacios around for so long. My story in the mag will be out in a few months and you’ll learn a lot more.

Do you think the reason why he hasn’t made it back to the NBA is because of how PC or “fan-friendly” the league has gotten. Because US Sports as a whole is more interested in not offending anyone than anything else. I remember seeing him play at Providence, and his handles were ridiculous. But I can just imagine the comments from religious nuts about having “some dude named God” in the NBA.

God Shamgod is just another sad example of talented players who should’ve stayed for the full 4 years of college basketball and just keep learning and growing. You have to build your CAREER up from nothing and not try the first shot you got and then go to europe or malaysia or wherever. i guess he’ll never get back, because nba managers would rather give younger european or chinese talents a chance (see nowtzki, dirk; see gasol, pau).

Well for one I seen chen in a.b.c.d camp one year and that dude is the truth. Shammgod came to my hood years back and crossed everybody up it was crazy what he was doing with the rock. After Providence’s run in the tourney Shammgod’s name really got put out there but when it came to draft time nobody really bit. You are right Sheed33 he should have stayed in college for four years and worked on his shot. Guys like Marcus Taylor from MSU, Will Avery, and Darius Washington should have taken a lesson from Shammgod’s story.

apaul says:
no doubt shamm would have benefitted from more time in school BUT his name wa hot.. that was a great tourney run.. and the knicks said they would take him — they took John Thomas instead, who never played for them. And look at his teammate Jamel Thomas.. great four-year career led to… nada. No guarantees. I don’t think his lack of chances has to do with his name and I can get pretty conspiracy minded. chen is really good. I really hope he continues to develop. Will be interesting to watch.

albie1kenobi says:
hey apaul, the Guangdong dialect is called Cantonese, which is the 2nd most popular (i should say 2nd most used) language in the chinese communities. i believe the chinese as a whole were determining the state official language (when the Red took over), and cantonese barely lost to mandarin.
oh yeah and beware of smokers in China, though i’m sure you know they are omnipresent by now.

storm coneyisland says:
Let me start by saying I seen chen in a.b.c.d camp one year and he is the truth. shammgod had one of the realest handles I ever seen he came to coney island one year and crossed everybody up. but I don’t think he can do it no more he’s probaly rusty now. damm homie in high school u was the man homie f..k happend to you lol
Nov.2 at 8:25 pm
albie1kenobi says:
forgot to say that even though Cantonese is my mother tongue, i have to say that i’m glad the official language is mandarin, because cantonese is almost an impossible language to learn to speak. mandarin has 4 intonations while cantonese has 8-9 (and maybe even more). i’ve seen maybe only 2 non-natives who can speak it well in my whole entire life.
oh and how does it feel to have fans demanding autographs? that must be sweet.
Nov.2 at 9:12 pm
apaul says:
hey, believe me i am familiar with cantonese. i am laughing at myself because jason told em the above and I didn’t really think it through (the Guangdong dialect thing. Cantonese sounds so different it’s absurd that it is the same written language. People in Shanxi were not so easy to understand either. The variety of dialects and accents is pretty astounding. My Mandarin is coming along but I can still understand alot more than I can say and the posibilities for confusion are numerous. I am very used to smoking by now of course but there are times when it still amazes me — like outside a basketball locker rom. It feels ridiculous to have fans asking for autographs. It was hilarious, really. Hard to compare Chen and Shamm because of the difference in their teams. Chen is a little quicker but shamm a little savvier and has a better handle… it was fun to watch them.
Nov.2 at 11:13 pm
albie1kenobi says:
actually, the only reason that those two dialects share the same written language is because someone arbituarily did it. have you heard of the First Emperor? before he became the emperor, china was a huge area with many tribes. he “united” them and forced a unified written language (and built roads) for easier ruling. so that’s why all the accents are very strong, because it’s pratically another dialect.
it’s way too awesome that Slam has someone reporting from China. learning madarin can only help you in the future (which i also need to do).
Nov.3 at 12:06 am
apaul says:
right. i know all that but it is still quite amazing. people who have never heard them wouldn’t understand but imagine if russian and english shared the same written language while sounding as different as they do. i think it’s almost that extreme. i am getting decent surivival chinese but i’m a long, long way from being able to interview someone in the language.
Nov.3 at 10:20 am
Ben says:
Great stuff, Alan. Can’t wait to see the full-blown feature in SLAM. I’m sure you will address my question there, but in short: why doesn’t Shamm play in Europe if the city he is in is so unpleasant? He can’t be making that much more $ in China, can he?
Nov.3 at 10:40 am
apaul says:
Thanks Ben. One thing you have to understand is he didn;t plan on being there. They have a tryout camp in and draft the summer after which you are offered a deal and have to sign it or be banned from china, theoretically for life. shamm played for another team for 3 years and was cba mvp twice. it’s a really nice town and he is hugely popular there. then he got a big money deal in saudi arabia and went there for two years. now he came back, planning o n going back to the first team but these losers grabbed him. he had todecide if he should go there or burn his china bridges.

Will says:
I think it was 1-2 year ago when I was surprised when I saw Chinese edition of SLAM (the one with Amare Stoudamire) appeared in my local Chinese store here in Canada.
How many local editions of SLAM are there ? Euro edition ?

Dave says:
Shammgod could not stay at Providence. He was getting booted. It was the NBA draft or nothing. Don’t feel bad for him he still makes 6 figs a year doing what he loves. But the Moron he is he probably doesn’t have a good financial advisor and will blow through it all. Yes I graduated from PC 97′. He is a frggin criminal
Nov.3 at 4:51 pm
albie1kenobi says:
you are right Alan, the dialects do sound very different. local dialects such as shanghainese are quite different phonetically. though i can get by with madarin because they at least use similar words and i can guess what they are. but as you can guess, each dialects have its own quirk and there are words (not just slangs) that basically can’t be written down because the written version of the word doesn’t exist. it’s kind of fun.
Nov.3 at 7:36 pm
apaul says:
albie — shanghaiese sounds really crazy. dave — what is your story on sham getting kicked out of prov? i’m quite sure he is reformed now. will — as far as i know there is only the chinese slam, which i don;t eally hvae anything to do with, despite being inchina. it is a licensing deal.

nice article, but I live in DG and I’ve watched the GD Tigers play the last 2 years, Jason Dixon is not really a role player, he’s more of a force on that team. I’ve watched it from the sidelines, teams double team Jason when he is in the post, that opens it up more for his Chinese teammates. Yi is soft, not hating just stating the facts from seeing him play, he’s got talent but I’m not sure he’s even ready for the NBA, but for a 7ft he’s mobile and runs the floor real well…Chen = dope, give him time, he’s so fast, he’s already being called Chinese Ivo…comedy, anyway I’m getting off the subject, nice article about Sham and the CBA.

I remember about 5 years ago, Sham was in the Dallas Mavericks training camp. I swapped quite a few e-mails with Mark Cuban about Sham, and how he was playing in camp, as well as whether he would have a legit shot at making the team. Cuban assured me he was being given a close look and would have every opportunity to make the squad. Needless to say, that didn’t work out. However I do respect Cuban for taking the time to give me daily updates on Sham during that camp.

WHAT’S GOING ON SHAM, THIS IS FLIGHT, FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, THIS IS DERRICK BROWN, SHAM PLAYED COLLEGE BASKETBALL WITH ME AT PROVIDENCE. ME AND SHAM HAVE BECAME BROTHERS DURING THE 2 AND A HALF YEARS WE SPENT TOGETHER IN COLLEGE. AS THE CAPTAIN OF THE TEAM, AND WITH ME BEING A FEW YEARS OLDER THEN SHAM, I WOULD ALWAYS TRY TO TEACH SHAM HOW TO STAY HUMBLE WITH SUCCESS. I WOULD TALK TO HIM ABOUT THOSE THINGS EVERY OTHER DAY, AND WOULD SHOW HIM BY EXAMPLE EVERYDAY. NOW I HAVE A NEPHEW OF MINE {YONEL BROWN} THAT’S THE TOP RANKED 7TH GRADE PG IN THE COUNTRY, WHO OFTEN STUDY TAPES OF SHAM PLAYING AT PROVIDENCE. ME AND SHAM BOTH TOOK OUR VISIT TO PROVIDENCE TOGETHER, I REMEMBER HIM SAYING “YO FLIGHT, IF WE BOTH SIGN, WE GOING TO DA TOURNAMENT,” SO WE BOTH SIGNED AND WAS A BASKET AWAY FROM PLAYING IN THE FINAL FOUR TOGETHER. OUR FIRST DAY ON CAMPUS, I WENT TO WORK-OUT, SHAM WAS AT THE GYM WITH A TAPE IN HIS HAND THAT HE ASK ME TO WATCH WITH HIM FIRST. WE WATCHED A GAME WITH ALLEN IVERSON PLAYING AT GEORGETOWN THE SEASON BEFORE. WE GOT HYPE WHILE WATCHING IT, WE WERE SAYING, “ITS GONNA BE ON WHEN THEY PLAY US, OH THEY RANKED, WE GONNA KILL DEM.” WE RAN IVERSON AND THAT GEORGETOWN TEAM OFF THE COURT WHEN WE PLAYED THEM. ME AND SHAM KNEW EVERYTHING THEY WANTED TO DO. ITS ALMOST LIKE MAGIC, CAUSE ME AND SHAM HAD BACK TO BACK DUNKS, AND THAT WAS THE FIRST AND LAST TIME THAT SHAM EVER DUNKED THE BALL IN A GAME. I INVITED SHAM TO MY HOOD WHICH IS IN CONEY ISLAND BROOKLYN. WE WERE HAVING A GAME ON MY BLOCK THAT WOULD HAVE THE TOP PLAYERS FROM CONEY ISLAND {RICH IN TALENT} PLAYING. SHAM PUT A SHOW ON FOR THE PEOPLE, HE PLAYED WITH ME, I ONLY HAD A MILLION PTS, HE HAD A MILLION ASST, THEN WE WENT BACK TO SCHOOL AND GOT READY FOR THE SEASON. I TRANSFERRED TO PROVIDENCE AS A JR, GRADUATED AFTER TWO YEARS. ME AND SHAM CAME IN THE SAME YEAR, AND LEFT AT THE SAME TIME. HE COULD PLAY IN THE NBA, ITS JUST THAT THEY DO WANT HIM, SO YOU DON’T WAIT FOR THE NBA TO WANT YOU, YOU TAKE A OFFER FROM A TEAM THAT WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU PLAY FOR THEM, I HAVE PLAYED OVERSEAS FOR ALMOST 10YRS NOW. LIVE YOUR LIFE SHAM, SPEND AS MUCH TIME AS YOU CAN WITH YOUR FAMILY. KEEP PRAYING EVERYDAY, STAY HUMBLE, AND THE MAN ABOVE WILL TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING ELSE. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEASON, IF YOU NEED SOMETHING JUST LET ME KNOW. SHAM IS DA REAL DEAL ON DA COURT, THEM DON’T MAKE EM LIKE DAT NO MO. LOVE YOU MY BROTHER, FLIGHT. CONEY ISLAND. TWO LEGENDS MADE HISTORY, CUT FROM THE SAME UP BRINGING.

Damon Agnos » God and The Whip says:
[…] From the where-are-they-now category: I’ve received a hot tip from a deep source that former Providence Friar and Washington Wizard God Shammgod will be trying out for the Milwaukee Bucks next week. The globetrotting Shammgod’s career has taken him to, among other places, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and, most recently, China, where his playing time was limited by a ceiling on minutes for foreign players. Perhaps the Bucks hope that Shammgod, with his experience in China, can help ease the transition of the still unsigned Yi Jianlian, their Chinese phenom lottery pick. More likely, though, is that in scouting Yi, the Bucks discovered that Shammgod has developed a jumper to complement his ridiculous handle, finally making him an NBA point guard. […]

Shamm was the man with the ridiculous handle. I experienced that cross over that many talk about. it took place at St. Martin’s church in the Bronx, NY. Although I am 15 years his senior and held my own mostly due to experience, the battle was intense as the entire gym stopped playing to watch us battle. It was a three on three and I was noted for my handle and long range shooting. However, I will give Shamm the credit, he got the better of me by not by much. Ofg course I backed off him after experiencing the most inhumane cross over to date. i just caught a flashback of the move that had me bouncing around like I was on a pogo stick, lol. The one thing I did recall was that Shamm’s release on hos jumper was too long and I was able to time it after tying my Jordans extra tight for better grip. The floor was like playing on ice and for a baller with a handle it was the shiznit. Peace to and your family Shamm. You destroyed Marbury at City College when you were both High school seniors. By the way, at 46 I still have the handle and jumper at half the speed, LOL.
