7. Steve Nash
Over the past few months, we’ve been running down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now. With the season starting, the list is almost complete. Today, Steve Nash quotes on Steve Nash.
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today.
Over lunch at the Outback Steakhouse (word to Steve Irwin), your crack SLAMonline.com staff sat down and ranked the 50 best players in the NBA today. We realize that’s kind of ambiguous, but that’s how basketball is and that’s how we like it. Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment. This doesn’t mean they’ll never be traded, and it doesn’t mean they’re due tremendous contract extensions, but it does mean — since value is king in the NBA — that over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now.
Before long it’ll be time for our annual NBA team previews. Right now it’s time for some law and order…
7. Steve Nash
In his own words
He’s the reigning back to back MVP, a man who has put himself in Hall of Fame company and has transformed the Suns and the game itself. He might be the best leader in the NBA. His shortcomings have been the lack of defense and questionable durability but other than that there’s not much you can’t L-O-V-E love about his game. He brought funtime back and the style of play he runs out in Phoenix has inspired David Stern to change the rules.
Strangely, as his play has improved, and he’s picked up somewhat controversial hardware - sparking a racial debate along the way - people have been glorifying him or tearing him down and putting him on a pedestal to such a degree that it’s hard to remember that he might be the coolest, most down-to-earth, active sports legend today. It’s wierd to think of him as an icon, but that’s what he is. Here is a collection of Steve Nash quotes. A point guard that has been revolutionizing today’s game, and a likeable, intelligent guy off the court.
“I think Canada is similar to the States, but I think even more so built on immigrants. We’re still allowing a lot of immigrants, and we’re very tolerant and accepting of that. And not only is it very diverse, but also, I find that Canada is not very segregated. People of American culture tend to stay to themselves more, or at least in their own part of the community. While here’s it’s very diverse. I kind of enjoy it; I think it’s very fun to celebrate that diversity. But I’m sure the States has that in many places. My experience is just that our infrastructure, in that way, is a lot different.”
“I’m lucky that I’m normal sized and I don’t really stand out so much. People already knew pretty much who I was, but people are so excited about the MVP. People here, in the street, are excited about it, excited that I won.”
“I have to say I’ve worked very few days of my life. I used to have to cut the lawn, and when I was in junior high school, I worked at a concession stand at a stadium.”
“I am a huge believer in giving back and helping out in the community and the world. Think globally, act locally I suppose. I believe that the measure of a person’s life is the affect they have on others.”
“I am not too accusatorial or defensive by nature. I have always been kind of philosophical about it, remembering that it is just a game. People take these things too seriously.”
“I have definitely gone through my ups and downs and faced my adversity and my nay-sayers, but managed to do all right. It is a pretty classic tale.”
“I think it’s important that people stand up for what they believe in. It’s important that people discuss things.”
“My free time at home is usually spent emailing, listening to music, reading and talking on the phone. I wish I was on the phone less, but I have been fortunate to stay in touch with so many incredible friends.”
“My ideal day would be to get a good work out in, listen to music, talk to my family and friends on the phone, read and go to a good movie.”
“People have always doubted whether I was good enough to play this game at this level. I thought I was, and I thought I could be. What other people thought was really always irrelevant to me.”
“The NBA has the best point guards in the world, so it is important that I come ready to play every night.”
“Well, my favorite band is Radiohead. But, you know, I am pretty fascinated in general with music. I love music. It is definitely an interest.”
“You should be able to voice your opinion and respect the voice of the other side. You should be willing to educate yourself and know what it is you’re dealing with.”

Nash Shouldn’t have won two MVP’s in a row. Kobe (Mr. 81) was definately the better player of the season and was more deserving. He did so much more with his team and had pretty much no help.

Best Balla Ever says:
Steve Nash is possibly the most valuabe to his team in the league!!!!! Think back 3 or 4 years ago in pheonix before they got nash and had that other *point Guard* Stephon “hog” Marbury. They were a 30 win team, max. W/ Nash as their leader, they turned that organization around. But Nash wont win the three-peat, even if he deserves it, because judges are just too tired of voting for the same player…

the way the west is stacked this year and the way phoenix has started off…….if nash can take them to the conference finals or finals you better believe he deserves an mvp award

J-Bird says:
Kobe scoring 81 points is exactly the reason he didnt win the MVP. Kobe tries to control games all by himself whereas Nash distributes the ball to guys like Raja Bell and Shawn Marion who struggle to create shots for themselves. Not to mention the fact that Kobe quit on his team in game 7, a loss to Steve Nash and the Suns.

Whenever I think about Nash that Rookie game comes up in my head when AI was shakin’ his ass up. I was like why is he doing this white guy so dirty? Come to find out it was N.A.S.H. I can’t see where the racism comes into play becuase it’s not like he’s black guy in the NHL breaking Wayne Gretsky’s records or anything. White guys have been tearing up the association since Mican. He’s like the modern day Cousy or Maravich because his ball handling is second to none. Smush ripped his ass a couple times but the “MVP” can have a bad day and Smush is no slouch. I think his shooting is underated because all you hear about is his assists and how he gets his squad involved. When the sh*t hits the fan he’s not afraid to take the game over and I will always respect that.

Ah i guess i should not be surprised about Slam putting AI over Nash. After all slam’s loyalty to AI is greater and its fan base is more geared towards AI. Its all about the street cred, the sneaks, AI’s toughness, his top selling jersey, and the fact that Philly’s mascot is named Hip hop (not a mere coincidence). In other words, AI’s pick here, if were really looking at value, is wack. On the court, its undisputable who is more valuable to its squad. Nash makes teamates better, and in addition sets the identity for his team. As for Nash winning that 2nd mvp, even though he took his team to the west. conf without amare, i still think kobe, dirk, brand were more deserving.

5. Tim Duncan
4. Allen Iverson
3. Dwaine Wade
2. Kobe Bryant
1. Lebron James This is probally how its going to be even though I personally think AI should be first. Critics always put him out of the top 3 positions because his team isnt as good as the others. Kobe gets away with it because the Lakers have that dynasty aura around them which gives kobes team a pass. Dwaine bumps AI because of the finals in 06 and Lebron does because he the beginning in the league. However nobody carries their team like AI does and puts up the numbers he does night in and out for the past 11 years. He is still doing it today and derserves to be in the top 3 I think.

Steve Nash: The innovator of NBA drive-way-style basketball. Ya know where your homeboy who doesn’t really play ball just kinda dribbles around and around and around until he gets an open bank shot. Classic shit. CAn hit lefty layups in traffic. Can draw the contact and still get the and-1. Shoots a pretty mean pull-up J… He’s good. I love it when he goes back to Dallas and Dirk gets caught on a screen and switch. He iso’s on Dirk and drags him every time. Pull up J in the 7 footers mouth, drive on em…Son is nasty… Plus who besides him and Dirk can get completely shit faced, have pictures of him tweakin his OWN nipples while getting shit faced, and we never hear about it from the Follower? That’s international pull right there… And is it me, or does “Im Steve Nash, wanna bang?” sounds like a great T-shirt.

i felt in love with basketball in 1996 at a camp in amherst/MA but at the same time i was shocked when i first went into the cafeteria with all the people from my “team”: all the white guys went left and all the black guys went right at stayed with each other. The team was nice and friendly and i could not imagine such a segregation in the USA.
I sat with the other “internationals” and we had a lot of fun but i will never forget that atmosphere of an elephant in the room without anybody taking notice…

Yes. So… how is it that Kobe’s team lost about 15 more games than Nash’s last year and lost to them in the playoffs, head up. Nash gets no respect from you people.

Portland Darkblazers is smoking that good stuff with his Iverson comments. I guess everybody who disagrees with him must be horribly biased towards hip hop and stuff. It’s crazy how quickly people forget how Iverson turned around a franchise that was straight garbage, while always shining. His rookie year Michael Cage and Clarence Weatherspoon started and were getting major minutes for the Sixers. Read those names again. And he did everything he did with less talent and more criticism. Crazy.

Where’s the typo Cashiville, I thought the I from is just that country slang. Anyway, I’m not gonna argue anyones spot on this list but I do think Nash is a pretty amazing player just given the fact that he doesn’t really do anything exceptionally well. he drives and drives and drives some more, then he kicks or dumps off for points. But he’s not fast or quick, he just gets it done. I don’t know if he shoulda been MVP back to back though. And I swear Dirk lets him score everytime he ends up guarding him, I guess he still has a soft spot for his former teammate. I will say I don’t like how KG got shitted on, and the explaination was pretty shitty Lang! Using that logic, every young player on their first or even second contracts, should be at the top of this list. i’d take DHoward over Eyebrows at this point and I think a lot of people would agree.

J-Bird says:

albie1kenobi says:
the concept of MVP is about as concrete as, well, the list you are reading right now. is it most valuable to the team? most valuable to the league? most instrumental to their team’s sucess? best player in the league?
truth is it’s a combination of all. the league intentionally keep the criteria ill-defined so that the “MVP talk” and voting is always more exciting than the actual award. much like what Slam is doing with this list.

FLUXLAND says:
Yo Timbo.. in that pic he may look like a 10 year old but you can tell he’s happy about making his dream come true and playing in the NBA. As if he is looking at someone and saying: “We did it!”. Unlike every other player who come off as if they dollar signs in their eyes or this “What took so long and why am I not the number 1 pick?” I’m not sure if agree with him winning the MVPs, (Kobe should have won it last year) but there is no denying Nash is a class act. Especially off the court. I just wonder how good he would have been had he stuck with football.

how can anyone says Nash doesn’t do anything exceptionally well? how is leading the league in assists and free throw % not be counted as exceptionally well? how about shooting 50% from the field for a point guard? it takes a lot of practice and skills to make split second passes with either hand at any angle in the fastest league in the world.
i wouldn’t say he doesn’t deserve his 2nd MVP. it’s just that i think we can make a better case for kobe, who i’m not very fond of myself. afterall, it’s really a meaningless trophy because it’s all subjective, especially when you have a wide-open “MVP race” like last year.
Nov.7 at 7:23 pm
Timbo says:
This is the way it should be… 1. Kobe: Not too far off as far as age with La_Bronzes and Wades, and he has 3 freakin’ rings. Compared to LeBronze 0, and Wade’s one.
2. The Lebrones’: Best all around player in the League. If he had Shaq on his team last year they win the chip simple as that. Period!
3. Wade: Phenom still on the rise. Doesn’t belong on any USA team be it Olympics or WBC..he’s game isn’t fit for that ish.
4. Dirk: 7 footer whom does it all..Well, except block shots..matchup nightmare for dayzz.
5. T.Robot: You say..why not A.I? Well, cuz I’ll take a Hall of Fame big man over a HOF lil guard Any day! Put it like this if you had a team of scrubs, and all you needed was to pick one more player, and the winner of this games get $10 mil dollars..and suddenly Iverson and Duncan walk in the gym, and you have to pick one..Whom do you pick for a shot at $10 mil? Exactly! Case closed!
6. Iverson: Pound for pound the freakin’ toughest cookies in this generation of the association..This kat is suppose to be getting sorrier not still putting up insane numbers at this age..Amazing!

G says:
Justin H, agreed. It’s just that the most improved award is subconsciously given to someone who sucked major ass in the past. Though Nash’s improvement in the year of his 1st MVP was the greatest, he was a decent player before and so he ended up with the MVP award he did not deserve.
His second MVP was a little more deserving, but still very borderline.
As for AI, though he still gets his props, the league and its fans have a habit of taking him for granted. The year he single handedly took his team to the finals was incredible. And don’t even try to pass some bullshit about his supporting cast because the only reason they won their awards, was because of Allen Iverson. Seriously.. eric snow.. aaron mckie.. where the hell are these fools at now.. That shit team made it to the finals! THE FINALS! What’s more, is that Iverson brings it every season and every game. Just look at his career stats. Consistently at the top. Parallel to no one.. eh, maybe MJ

Steve Nash at the 7 spot is about right for me. Mavs, Heat, and Suns are not starting out the gate strong, but I’m sure they will finish strong. Nashty and Co. are trying to find their chemistry with STAT right now. After that its Steve running the point, dropping a dime to each and everyone of his teammates and winning along the way. In my opinion Steve Nash lacks Clutch play and that’s way Allen Iverson is ahead of him because his clutch. I know Melo is clutch but his wasn’t an MVP yet like A.I. and Nash. A.I. For MVP.

Yezsyr says:
Nash is fine right where he is. Yes he shot above 50% from the field as a pg, but so did Tony Parker. Not a prerequisite for greatness. Steve Nash should never have won the MVP the second time, because even without Amare, Shawm Marion is a top 10 player SKILL SET wise. The only thing he cant do is what Nash can, and thats pass. LeBron should have won it because, honestly, Hughes was never right, and I’d rather have Odom than Ziggy. While LeBron is an overrated defender, he’s an underrated passer because he had to take the scoring load. Remember he was compared to Magic coming out. His court vision is top 3 in the league. And I love Melo at 8, because watching him play in the world games, he was easily the best scorer America had. He stroked it from everywhere, and his first step is devistating. AND CP3 is right where he belongs. He will win several assist titles, pulled do 5 boards at under 6 feet tall, and makes the point guard position look so simple. I have a feeling that if CP3 was on the Suns they would play just as well.

9) Elton Brand
8) Gilbert Arenas
7) Kobe Bryant
6) Yao Ming
5) Steve Nash
4) Dirk Nowitzki
3) Tim Duncan
2) Dwyane Wade
1) LeBron James
This list is starting to look much better then our boys at the slam dome. AI is one of the greatest players of all time put in terms of value and how good AI will be in 2006-2007 no way in hell he should be top six.

Teddy-the-Bear says:
Mr. Rob Stewart, ummm lets put it this way. Steve Nash is behind Duncan on this list for a simple and easy reason. Timmeeeh! has actually done awesome in the playoffs, unlike Mr. Nash here. Tim Thomas saved the Suns last year. Timmeh! is a real playoff contender. Timmeh! has also brought home some titles, which is a great accomplishment. He also averages great stats and he is very stable and reliable. That is why Nash is not ranked as good as Tim Duncan. AI for number 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gotta make it to at least top 5 hopefully…….. =\

Kobe could have three games where he score 80 or more. No player in history can be better than Kobe with the exception of MJ, but kobe is catching up with him. Kobe is by far the greatest player in this era. He shit on Wade, Lebron, Iverson, Carmelo anytime and anywhere. If u people agree give me a hell yeah n if u dont agree f*** yall.

3- Dwayne” The Flash” Wade
2- Lebron ” the equivalent of Shaq, but a wing player, just bullying his way to the cup without any real skills” James
1- Kobe “The black Mamba” Bryant Notice that Dwade and Kobe are the only ones i give props to, the others well you can read. And as for the Lebron comment…lol….don’t worry I know James has crazy game but I came that this realization during the playoffs last year.

Steve Nash is top 5. I’ve got him over AI anyday. To anybody who says he didn’t deserve even one of his MVP’s, you’re a jackass. The man, like it or not, changed the game. Here’s the rest of the list. 6. AI 5. Duncan 4. Dirk 3. Kobe 2. Lebron 1. DWade P.S. - lol @ “I’m Steve Nash, wanna bang?”

icon..legend. master of the game…
Steve Nash brought a style of the game that was lost.. he thinks pass first…
this style is crowd pleasing and it makes the game exciting…
some one had to pass the ball to greats like King, Wilt, Jordan,Worthy, and Dominque
if it wasn’t for MVP Steve Nash the game wouldn’t be like it is today….

Phil B. says:
Just want to point out that for SLAM to put Nash at #7 is not inconsistent because most, perhaps all, of SLAM’s staff did not think Nash deserved either MVP. I believe that what makes some people critics, or haters, of Nash is not race, his lack of D or anything obvious like that. I think that Nash is something the league very seldom - maybe never - sees… a player who improves radically late in his career. I can’t think of any other player in NBA history that played throughout his 20s and was a very good but only occasionally a great player - who in his 9th and 10th seasons, at age 30 and 31, became a top-5 player. A lot of fans just don’t believe this sort of improvement is possible. Conventional thinking says when a player hits 30 years old, he may maintain his excellence, or begin to decline. When has a guy ever gotten so much better, as measured by significant increase in shooting percentages, assists, and turning a losing team into a big winner? I can’t think of one NBA player who - let’s take SLAM’s ranking - became a top-7 player only AFTER hitting the age of 30. Can anyone?

My favorite thing about Nash is he used to date Elizabeth Hurley!!!!! ELIZABETH HURLEY!!! Nash has game on and off the court. And his wifey now is cold too. Glad to see he got a haircut and I think he’s ranked right. And I agree with PDC, Marion is better than Odom and Barbosa is better than Smush.

Robert: And if not for Bob Cousy, Pete Maravich, and some guy named Magic we probably wouldn’t have guys like Nash, Kidd, or JWill (Florida grad, not Duke grad). They were the true pioneers of pretty, precision passing… (I know you love the onomatopoeia) They (especially Cousy) made it okay to make the slick pass. And if you watch old ass footage, Cousy used to turn passes that should’ve been basic into fancy ones just cuz. Its like he got bored with the game and did behind-the-backs to make it more interesting… Magic was the King of the no-look. Maravich was the Original Whit Eboy, fakin guys out with his passes. If your gonna give league changing respect, try starting with the guys Nash emulates. That’s like saying “if not for Shaq, the league wouldn’t be the same” which when compared to guys like Russell, The Dipper, and Kareem, seems a bit shortsighted… Im feelin the love for the distributor, but lets keep it in its proper perspective.

That white boy sho can pass though…Bounce pass between a guys legs…against the best athletes in the world (according to Darth Stern)…makes it look too easy…and looks like the guy next door that always takes his trash out on time, waves to the neighbors, does car-pools to and from soccer practice…
Good guy, better player, even if he did steal my man Kobe’s hardware last year…I aint hatin…

Kobe is the best in the game today no doubt….but in no way can he compare to Air Mike right now. Just look at stats alone and its no contest, not to mention all that MJ did for the game.

Aaron says:
If you have any doubt about Nash’s ability, go back to the playoffs in 2004/2005 when the Suns played Dallas. Watch any game during that series and you will truly see what I think is the best playoff performance by any Suns player ever. Nash is a selfless player that is great for the game and as long as people keep idolizing the Kobe’s of the world, the game will not be played properly.
Nov.8 at 2:20 pm
Shiz says:
as far as I can tell, there are probably just as many detractors as supporters for Kob. I dont think its a thing about people idolizing Kobe more than Nash per se. Besides they have two different functionsfor two different teams with decidedly different styles. Nash is a distributor, getting everybody else involved.
Kobe is a scorer, putting the ball in the hole.
Both guys do their respective jobs better than anybody right now…
Its just a matter of taste. Some guys prefer Nash, some kobe.
Because he takes a majority of the teams shots (not so much this year), as planned, he doesn’t play properly?
I just dont understand that. And further more, what with all the A.I. love that goes around, I catagorically refuse to accept it. A.I. was the definition of the word “jacker”. But we found reasons (mostly having to do with his height or ability to absorb contact) to give him a pass. But make no mistakes, he’s looked off just as many teammates as Kobe has over the years… People are just still mad at Kobe cuz he didn’t get convicted in that Colorado debacle. That is not to say that he was or wasn’t guilty. Only two people know that and they aint tellin. But people are mad that he didn’t get convicted regardless… Says a lot about our hypocritical stance regarding american justice if you asked me…”guilty until proven innocent…and then you’re still guilty”. Now the Duke scandal?? WHOO! There’s no way any student from such an “upright” (uptight), “ethical” (amoral) “high class” (elitist) student body could perform such a vile act! Especially cuz she was an exotic dancer, cuz ya know, everyone has inalienable rights…except exotic dancers. Riiiight!! The hypocracy is laughable… People demonize Kobe, but really your just putting him on a pedistal cuz he aint nothin but a basketball player…but like Ice Cube he’s the “nigguh ya love to hate”… Maybe that’s why I like em so much…Maybe he should come out with a remix…”fuck you Kobe!!” “Yeah! Cuz Im the nigguh ya love to hate!”…mmmm…on second thought…maybe not… *continue’s shining soapbox as I wait patiently for Kobe’s inclusion to the list*

Very impressive player. Very. I try to pick out things from my NBA favourites, and with him i just love how he slices into the zone via baseline, and keeps his dribble to pop up at the otherside for the simple jumper or great assist. He’s really got a fluid game and his passing reminds me a bit of Stockton, no waste of motion, just simple, but often spectacular. Plus that fadeaway jumper he uses, where he practically kicks the defender in the nuts? crazy but effective. And he’s kinda like the womanizer du jour in today’s NBA, what with Liz Hurley, the busty spice girl and (allegedely) Nelly Furtado… Go Nashty!

bullshit nash at 7 kidd at 34 what the hell. he is so not he most valuble player int he league without nash the suns could probably get to the 5th spot and get to the 2nd round without kobe the lakers would be nothing 0 zip just another team finding themselves give em another star back to the finals. im from la but i was not a lakers fan since the shaq era i always hated kobe and thought shaq was the man but comon give it to lebron kobe brand nash is in a good situation but the guy has no defense if he had a 1 man team that team would go nowhere he is just a part of the suns succes they could replace him and i dont think vince is mvp either.

chicagoballa says:
to the dude who said kobe is approaching Michael… are you insane? look at the eras both players played in. if Michael was born same time as LeBron, he’d be averaging 40+ PPG EASILY. dare I say 50. when Jordan was putting up those ridiculous numbers, defenses were so much more tenacious. now you get slightly tapped and you go to the line. you think Kobe would have scored 81 pts in the early 90s? hell no, you had to be absolutely in the zone to even approach 50 back then, 60 was absurd. Kobe can’t and shouldn’t be compared to Michael. Michael is the greatest ever and no one today, not LeBron, not Kobe, not D-Wade, not ANYONE, is even remotely close to coming close to his sheer brilliance.

Steve Nash can do it all I suppose… he is the sports commentators dream because he does not get in trouble…he would probably fare well with Shaq and actually force the big aristotle to be honest for once. he is white that is true but he somehow defies logic by scoring all of the court…. I think his best assett for an owner would be that he could straight up tell you who he wants that you don’t expect to make a better player

John stockton says:
Nash didn’t deserve those mvps… stockton had a higher avg in points and assists than nash in his prime. 15 assists per game! nash turns the ball over too many times… i had him at number 10. great player, but overrated.

wow…i never thot anyone could be so stupid……to put a guy like Nash ahead of KG, Carmelo, Kidd, Paul pierce….Wow….and all this BS about Nash turning around a team. Look at a guy like Kidd (best and most allround player ever). When he came to NJ in 2000….they were one of the worst teams in the East. He didnt have all stars like Stoudemire, Marion, Barbosa, Raja Bell, etc. …..he had Lucious Harris, KMART (who became a cripple), Keith Van Horn, etc. They ALL ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO MARION AND STOUDEMIRE…..Kidd,,,,with almost nobody (even worse team than Kobe now) got them to the Finals TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!!!!!!….SO PLEASE….STOP WITH THE CRAP ABOUT NASH TURNING AROUND A TEAM……he has abosolutely NO ALL ROUND GAME>…..”his team” has never been to the Finals…and the MVPS are trash….Kobe should have got it in 06…and Kobe or DWADE in 05 (lebron most deserving)
