YOUR season preview

It’s about that time.

By Sam Rubenstein

Fri-Day! I’m trying to bring you something basketball related, but today is really a struggle. You know, the whole Mets thing from last night. Yesterday I was too nervous to make sense, today I’m too depressed. I can’t even read about the game anymore. Sports. Aren’t they the best? I’ve tried a multitude of ways to make myself feel better. The first was to stay up until 4:30 AM playing that new Scarface video game. That was a big mistake. Tony (me) got eaten by a shark. That was surprising. I actually screamed and fell off the couch. Today was not a good day. Moving forward…

Mutoni’s been going through the season previews with various bloggers, which will keep popping up in our Don’t Miss section. SI has their preview issue out right now, as does SLAM. In a strange case of the bizarro world coming to life, each of the the SI covers has more NBA attire violations on it than the SLAM covers combined. Since I’ve proven to be useless as a communicator today - I’ve spent the past 5 hours snapping at people and saying intentionally offensive things - I think it’s better that I just keep my mouth shut and let the commenters do the talking.

So… picks for the upcoming season? Award winners? Be as thorough as you want. Divisions, conferences, the conference finalists, whatever you want. Looking forward to reading them. Especially now that I’ll have lots of time when I won’t be watching the World Series.

Bryant Reeves says:
Carter in a career year…
MVP: Vince (who I hate with a passion)
Eastern Champs: Nets (Miami is going to surprise everyone with how bad they are)
Western Champs: Dallas
NBA Champs: Dallas
ROY: Roy (couldn’t resist)

Patrick says:
miami is gonna be a dissapointment this year. The bulls and cavs are gonna slug it out in the eastern conference finals with Lebron bein to much for the defensive bulls. But whoever wins will fall to the gun happy suns. That offense will be too much for anyone. With diaw, barbosa, and bell emerging as great role players; nash, marion and amare will lead this team to the promised land.
The knicks are gonna win their division. Philly’s a mess. Kidd and Carter are older than we thought, that team is going to self-implode. the celtics and raptors are still too young. Lebron = MVP

Boing Dynasty says:
^”Kidd and Carter are older than we thought”
Uhh, Carters only 29-30, and in a contract year, which easily takes away 2 or 3 of those years, ask E Damp.

Eastern Conference As before, the below predictions are based on records alone, 1-8, and don’t take into account whatever division champ seeding the NBA has going on this year. And, trades and unforeseen injuries obviously can’t be considered here, since I got the balls to post this in mid-October. Here we go. 1. Cleveland. As any of you who know me know, I’ve been on Kobe’s jock like Kate Farber (the chick he allegedly raped) since he came into the league. And Kobe is still the best player in the League. But LeBron is a phenom. He is Magic Johnson with jumping ability and quickness. We truly have never seen anyone with his combination of size, height, strength, athletic ability, court awareness, etc. If he was in the NFL, he would lead the league in rushing AND receiving yards. Last year, his third in the League, he averaged like 31, 7, and 7. Are you kidding me? He really could average a triple double in about 2 years. Detroit lost their heart, Miami is just older and not as driven, and Chicago has too many new pieces. 2. Miami - This ranking of course assumes that Shaq did not 742,000 calories a day in the offseason. What a waste of talent that guy is. Could have been the best athlete we’ve ever seen. Instead, he rides Kobe coattails to 3 titles in LA, and then makes Wade and Zo carry his fat ass last year. Miami has the exact same team as last year, and all but Wade are past their primes by 112 years. Fuck Fat Shaq and his $8,000,000,000,000 contract. OVERRATED! 3. Chicago - They play about the ugliest brand of hoops you’ll ever see, trying to win games 32-29. And they gave an old and offensively incept Ben Wallace WAY too much money. But this team still has some serious pieces, and is in great position to pick up a superstar like Jermaine Oneal or KG if their teams are falling apart. Watch out for the Bulls. 4. Detroit - Fuck the Pistons. If Karl Malone had been healthy, Kobe and the Lakers would have won the title in 2004. Now, they let the heart and soul of their team and of their D bolt to the Bulls. They still have some good pieces, but Flip is not very respected as a coach, and Sheed will go apeshit without Big Ben Wallace (whatever happened to those dope Tracy Morgan commercials?) to keep him in line. Could be a rough year in Detroit. DETROIT BASKETBALL… My ass. Not this year. 5. Washington - Gilbert Arenas is a nut job. Great player, but crazier than your girlfriend drunk and on her period. Jamison is a good complimentary player, as is caron Butler. 6. Orlando - Jameer Nelson, Dwight Howard, Darko (yep, Darko), a healthy Grant Hill, and a drunk JJ Reddick. They are an up and coming team and will surprise some people this year. Howard is a beast. A beast I tell you. 7. New York - Yep, in the playoffs. Larry Brown killed this team last year. Just destroyed them. Take a close look at their lineup. They have so much talent, and now nobody expects anything from them. Marbury, Francis, Lee, Channing Frye, Curry, Richardson, Jalen Rose, Jeffries, etc. These guys have a lot of players who can drive, and Isiah will have them take advantage of the rule changes that prohibit any contact on the perimeter. Unlike wack-ass Larry Brown. 8. New Jersey - Vince Carter or Ason (he’s got no “J”) Kidd will get hurt this year, and Clifford Robinson’s attempts to revive them with medical marijuana will not work. Out of the playoffs: Boston, Indiana (JO will get traded), Milwaukee (why trade TJ Ford?), Atlanta (improving, but not there yet), Philly (will Iverson get moved?), Toronto, and Charlotte (Adam Morrison is for real, but they need some time)

Oct.20 at 6:15 pm

Dylan says:
Morrison for ROY. Purely offensive player on a team that needs it.

Oct.20 at 6:16 pm

jbn74sb says:
Western Conference 1. Dallas - Pretty much the same team as last year, plus Devean George and Maurice Ager. It’s all about the playoffs for the Mavs and if Dirk can prove he belongs among the truly elite. They blew the Finals last year, and that has to fall on Dirk’s (as well as Avery’s)shoulders. 2. San Antonio - Tough call here, as they’ve lost some of their depth and their role players were already old last year (Finley, Van Exel, Horry, etc.). But if Duncan, Ginobli, and Parker can stay healthy, they are as tough as anyone. 3. Phoenix - It is inconceivable that Steve Nash is a back-to-back MVP. I watched Quentin Ross (who?) light him for 20 last year in the playoffs. You cannot be that bad on D, and win one MVP. However, I love the style of ball they play, and the addition of Marcus Banks will help Nash stay healthy for the playoffs. But if Amare is not in top form, watch for a sharp drop from Phoenix this year. 4. Houston - A surprise pick here. IF they can all stay healthy, Houston will do some damage this year. McGrady, Yao, Bonzi, Battier - problem is that I could probably get minutes for them at PG, and I’m 6′2″, 240, and slower than Shaq in a spelling bee. 5. Clippers - I will now go stab myself in the eye after ranking them higher than the Lakers. Cassell is old, and Tim Thomas will go back to being the jackass that he is. But, Brand is a stud, and Kaman and Livingston should both have breakout years. Look for them to move Magette, who for some reason nobody likes. 6. Lakers - Kobe Bryant is a better player than Michael Jordan. He has a more complete offensive game, and is as competitive. Before arguing, do your research - all of it. Who did Jordan compete against? How long did it take him to win? Until after Bird, Magic, and Isiah got old, and before the new crop of studs matured. How many of his teammates liked him? That said, it is going to be tough for Kobe to match last year’s performance. 81 was nice, and so was 62 in 3 quarters against Dallas. But my favorite performance was against the Clippers, in which he only scored about 50. LAs step-child team was playing well, and had the lead at half-time. Kobe came out pissed off, looked all their sorry defenders in the eye, and rained jumper after twisting jumper down on their head. It was incredible, and he sucked the life right out of their team. Look for Kwame to put up 12 and 8, Bynum to get some PT, Farmar to surprise some people, Maurice Evans to play well, and Mihm to get traded. Of course, if Kobe gets hurt or butt rapes another blonde girl, they will be the worst team in the league. 7. Hornets - Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler, David West, Desmond Mason. These guys can play, and will surprise the hell out of people this year. They were in the chase last year, with Paul as a rookie, and he should only be better this year. Look for lots of shots with Byron Scott standing on the sidelines with his arms crossed. 8. Golden State - Baron Davis, Troy Murphy, Dunleavy, Pietrus, Diogu, Richardson, Taft, and Nellie. In the playoffs, especially with the no hand checking rules. Out of the playoffs: Sacramento Queens, Seattle, Utah, Denver, Minnesota, Portland, and Memphis. Damn the West is tough.

SLAM u used to be about the little guy, but now u got ur new website and forgot all about us. I thought maybe this was the day ud ask for emails for the real season previews like last year, but nope all we get is the comment section. and now rgeezy doesnt get to once again peg the clippers for greatness. just because im not enough of a computer expert I don’t get to repeat my preview. U go to those archives and remember me as one of the few people who picked the Clippers for greatness, but now this year ill have no where to send people and say yes i had it written down in September, so the rest of you can get off my wagon. the prophetic words of chris kaman being the key piece to the puzzle and if he averaged a double double they would make the playoffs, and look at mr kaman averaging 12 and 10 and the clippers makin the playoffs. but not this year, i cant come in with the u heard it here first because theres no where to say it.

Gord says:
My predictions for the year:
Kobe breaks both of his legs in a car accident before the season starts and the Lakers go 10-72.
Kyle Lowry gets sent down to the D-League and doesn’t come back for the rest of the season.
Don Nelson just decides he doesn’t like Monta Ellis and relegates him to the bench for the entire year and he averages 3 ppg.
My prediction for one of the next few posts: DP gets angry and says “u aint gon whoop no ass” and spells for “f-o” at least 3 times.
Go play “wit yoself”.

kdubb says:
man, what’s with all the Vince d*ck-ridin’? I will confidently make a prediction that he will get injured at least once - ok, twice -this season and plays about 50 games. Not to be a pessimist, but come on. Also I hope Amare Stoudemaire isn’t the next Antonio McDyess.
As for my predictions… The Lakers make it to the Western Conference finals (but not the finals)and Kobe is the MVP. Bynum and Jordan Farmar both have huge years.
Carmelo Anthony has a huge year, but the Nuggets make it to the second round of the playoffs.
Detroit falls apart at the seams. Miami does not dissapoint, and repeats.

1) Heat will repeat like circa (93-95) Rockets. they won’t be 1st or even 2nd but they will make it and gut it out….”don’t ever underestimate the heart of a champion” Heck, I don’t want Heat to repeat but I think that’l happen.
2): Spurs will sweep Mavs in the Conference Finals or 4-1(revenge of the t.robot & MF DOOM)
3) Mavs will beats Suns in semi’s in 7. Not because amare isn’t healthy, its because mavs made it to the finals last year.
4) Spurs will beat my Supes in the semi’s in 6 games again.
5) Supes sonics will beat whoever their 1st round enemy is.
6) KG will be MVP

Mighty says:
1) ROY will either be Adam Morrison because he never quits even down 50 or Brandon Roy. Maurice Ager will be making those other teams that passed him suffer, I think he’ll do what parker did(26th pick?) did to the spurs/ to the mavs.
2) I’ll be mistaking james white for shawne williams, also for marquis daniels…oh that was Rawle Marshall.
3) Pops Mensah-Bonsu will enter the dunk Contest and maybe win. his 1st dunk is a 1 handed wind-mill slam….using his left hand too maybe.
4) Ben Wallace will win DPO to make his full bull transformation a success.
5) Kobe will drop 11, 21, 31, 41, 61, 71, 51, 24 in that order during 1 stretch in the season.
6) Luke Ridnour will average 7.4 ast per game.
7) Most Improved Player: Chris Wilcox or Dwight or the other AI from phily
8) Richard Jefferson will have a 2000-01 Vince Carter run.
9) Gary Payton will be known as “the glove” again
10) Shaq will have SUPER MONSTROUS GAME vs a team that uses the new “small lineup” thingy. SIZE MATTERS
11) SLEEPER of the Year: UTAH JAZZ
12) Old Ball comes back inthe 2006-2007 Finals
13) Grant Hill gets robbed of the most improved player award because he almost gets by an injury plagued season…almost
14) If Wally clicks in Boston…he stays. if he dosent….he stays.
15) Dajuan Wagner will have a solid year along with Monta Ellis and Mickael Pietrus.

All I gotta say is don’t sleep on the Raps - from Bosh runnin with TJ, to MoPete accepting the challenges of the new guys and winning MIP with a 20PPG season along with his solid D, to Bargnani and Parker and Garbajosa (way too underrated), all the way down to the Hammer and the Nails (Kris Humphries and PJ Tucker) the whole team looks like a best-case scenario so far (even Rasho, who’s best case scenario is being glued to the bench - 6′9″ Garbajosa or the Hammer will be starting at the 5 before long).
I’m not sayin the Raps are gonna be lookin for “Fo’, Fo’, Fo’” or anything, but I’m talking top 6 in the East with a chance to really move up and do something special - y’all heard it here first…

predictions- Orlando makes the playoffs! dwight will continue to improve (playing on team usa cant hurt), Darko will play well enough to ohave everyone stop saying he was the biggest draft bust in history (c’mon haters, just in recent memory you’ve got Micheal Olawakandi), jj redick and grant hill will both have the injury bug (already do) and here’s a hopeful prediction, they don’t pick up grant hill for a contract extension. Please. Course they will get knocked out first round, but they’ll get there. once I got that out there about my fav team… mvp- Kobe
roy- adam morrison
dpoy- ron artest
slam dunk champ- James White (from the free-throw line through the legs)
west champs- cavs over heat
east champs- suns over mavs
nba champs- cavs
finals mvp- Lebron the suns will be a little disapointed with amare’s play upon his return… but seeing as they made it so far last season without him at all, they will realize he is not the only leader among them. It will take the great Lebron, destined to be the best player in the League in a few years, to take them out of the playoffs. And it will take Kobe, the best player in the league today, having just as great a season as he did last year (only also getting his teamates more involved now that they are getting a little more used to the triangle offense that will still center around no. 24 (is he still doing that?)) to stop bron bron from getting the mvp. I just hope kobe changing his # and Nashty chopin’ his hair off doesn’t change the way they play.

Shane has it right, Pistons are not dead. losing ben will leesen the team thats for sure, but dont sleep on them just cause of that ppl! They are still capable of 50-55 wins. and thats about the amount they won in ‘04. i’ve seeen seedings where they are as low as 6! cmon, U putting DC and Cavs ahead of these guys? puh-lees. Wiz got plenty of ofense but no D, Cavs got Bron witch is automatic Playoffs but got serious hole in the pg pos. and you can’t run every single play through bron. step up huge hughes.

6th man- leandro barbosa
coach- isiah thomas, seriously…. Being the die hard suns fan that I am, you know i had to pick my squad to win it all! this is thier year, they have one of the deepest benches in the league and the most potent offensive attack since Showtime. amare will prove all the critics wrong and bounce back to be the dominant force he was in 04-05. the suns will face off against the heat and finally give the nba the finals matchup that weve all been waiting for. the viente cuatro will get that mvp trophy that he prolly shouldve been more in the running for from last season, hell he might even drop a wilt (100). out east the knicks and the hawks will be the suprise teams and actually challenge for a playoff spot. i will even go as far and say that the knickerbockers will win at least 40-45 games. I got inside info on the team and they are on a mission to right that nightmarish season last year. the league is about to go thru another golden era! one that could even surpass the 80’s, and with the all star game in vegas (granted the players wont be all hungover for the actual game, lol!) were in store for a truly memorable year! and everyone will stop complaining about the new ball too….

I don’t know ’bout any predictions but a James White, Nate Rob, and Hassan Adams line-up during the Dunk contest is too good to pass up on…

EASTERN: 1. DETROIT - w/ SELLOUT BEN gone, there’s more offense and other teams would guard 5 guys instead of 4, the reason for the Pistons lost against MIAMI is coz Shaq didn’t guard anybody, he just waited in the paint coz Ben can’t score even if his life depended on it! The bench was stronger w/ Flip signing and lookout for the rookie Jason Maxiell, DICE, Ronald Dupree & Delfino are back. Tay will be an ALL-STAR! Rip will again lead the scoring coz nobody on this planet can chase him, Chauncey will have another mvp type season and SHEED would be again the “X FACTOR”! The ship’ is going back to MOTOWN! They are just where they want to be, in the backs of everyone’s minds and ready to strike. I wanna say FUCK YOU to jbn74sb! You’ll eat your words come June. I challenge you to a 1 on 1 game, i’ll kick your bitch ass all over the court like what the Pistons did to the Lakers in the 04 Finals!
2. CLEVELAND - they’ll get to the Conf Finals but will loose to the Pistons in 5 coz KING JAMES doesn’t have ths supporting cast and he doesn’t have the “killer instinct” like JORDAN did.

Anyone who seeds Detroit lower than #2 is out of his mind. Ben Wallace is gone…who gives a shit? DETROIT DOESN’T. No one will miss his awful stats and play that he brought with him last postseason. He was pathetic, Shaq owned him in every way. Ben puts up mediocre defensive stats and awful offense. Pistons are finally developing their young players and JMax will the 6th man of the year. Nazr is a solid replacement he can easily put up comparable defensive numbers to Ben and he is much better offensively. The Bulls went out and overpaid for an overrated player. Here are the REAL rankings: 1.) Miami - when you win a championship you are automatically number one.
2.) Detroit - loses Ben but adds depth at the bench and will have a much better offense and will still be a pretty good defensive team.
3.) New Jersey - VC, Kidd, Jefferson and a pretty good center make for a competitive team. If all stay healthy can do some damage.
4.) Chicago - Bulls get better but not offensively. It depends on how Tyrus Thomas develops, moving in the right direction but still a few years away from serious contention
5.)Cleveland - I love King James but he still doesn’t have the right pieces around him to get him over the hump. Still a good team that when on all cylinders can compete with the best.
6.)Washington - Gilbert Arenas is insane. They have some good talent but they need to play defense.
7.)Pacers - Lost Peja and Artest, you still have J O’Neal and you have cap bustin’ Stephen Jackson on your team. I don’t like your chances of doing much this year.
8.) Magic - Will be good…someday. Alot of young talent and when they develop they could be scary good. But, not anytime soon. East Champs - Pistons (deep bench and drive push them over the heat)
West Champs - Suns finally make it
