Kobe and Weezy: Together at last

It was only a matter of time

by Marcel Mutoni

It looks as if Lil Wayne (also known as Birdman Jr., Young Tune, Weezy F. Baby, Weezy F**kin Baby or Tha Carter ) is going to be the first celebrity to wear Kobe Bryant’s new #24 jersey. The unveiling of KB24 will take place at an upcoming performance in Los Angeles as part of the Up Close and Personal Tour.

Weezy, the young rapper who’s sold over 21 million records worldwide (shaking head in disbelief), had this to say when speaking to MTV recently: “When Kobe heard about the concert, he reached out to me ’cause he’s a fan of my music and I’m a fan of his skills on the court…He said he wanted me to be the first to represent his new jersey, number 24, and I was with it!”

I wonder what Kobe will do to pay Weezy back for the free pub:

-Be the first guy in the NBA to play with platinum teeth.

-Show up on BET’s Freestyle Fridays.

-Get a tear tattooed just below one of his eyes.

-Declare that he’s the “Fire, Fa, Fire Mamba!”

-Like Weezy, make really bad hip hop (again).

I have the “K.O.B.E.” single on vinyl. It’s outstanding. Seriously, does this not seem like entry 6,972 into “Dude, you’re trying way too hard to be down”?

Pat B says:
Wow…..”Lil Wayne is nice” “Lil Wayne can flow” you guys must be on acid when listening to this trash to think its good…wow….that’s like saying E-40 is a good rapper or Ying Yang Twins are the best rap duo ever…..what a joke….yeah i would be real hyped up if i was Kobitch as well to have a gremlin like weezy wearing my jersey…both are way overhyped….i think a good nickname for Raja Bell would be “The Mongoose” “are popularly known for their ability to fight and kill venomous snakes ” hahahaha

Oct.3 at 10:46 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
Wayne has a really in-depth basketball rhyme on his album (Carter II). Something like “I’m a take the two if it’s open, if the two ain’t there I hit the three like it’s nothing” or something like that. It is a METAPHOR cause Wayne is deep like that.
For what it’s worth he’s always been the best Hot Boy. Juvenile sucks.

but you still can’t hate on the classic “back that ass up”. some people performed that song at a lip-sync contest at my high school a few years ago, completed with a toy bike, dollar bills (i don’t know if those were fake or not), and water bottles. when they brought out a blow up doll (yes, that kind of blow up doll) and start faking sex with it, the admin pulled the plug of their performance. it was a bit shocking coz my school was all preppy and crap. the admin musta been having heart attacks. only Juve can bring out the best in everyone like that.

Max Airington says:
Ryan that was actually entry #2. Remember that group of his, Cheizaw? Some shit like that. Anyway, it was like multiplying zero times three. For the record, entry # 6,972 which you were referring to, was actually that corny ass tattoo of his. I want to meet the artist who did that thing without laughing….

Oct.3 at 1:13 pm

Tom Jackson says:
I actually have the entire “8″ Album, with the song K.O.B.E. on it, with Tyra.. on mp3. You guys should really hear it.

There are Kobe #24 jerseys already out. He must be talking about the authentic one.

Oct.3 at 2:42 pm

CASHVILLE says:
Wayne might lose some crediblility messin’ with Kobe’s punk ass and I know I didn’t see somebody mention wayne as bad hip hop. What in the hell are you smoking? You can’t name a recent album that can even hold a candle to the Carter 1. Wayne is no doubt top five in the rap game right now and if somebody is south hatin’give me your top five up north emcees and I’ll give you two southern boys that’ll match or smash em’.

I’m laughing at this discussion turning into something on AllHipHop.com. I like Wayne, everytime I listen to music I don’t need a higher message. Sometimes I want Outkast, sometimes I want 8Ball and MJG. People who can only appreciate one type of rap make me laugh.
And I’m not surprised at the Juve song being performed at a prep school. Blackface is rampant on college campuses across the country.

Oct.3 at 3:42 pm

Shiz says:
WHOA! Sam is O D’ing!! Weezy better than Juve?! U must be drunk off that surrp, ha. Who you think put that lil twerp on, ha. Naw this aint Juve,ha! But you trippin ha! Cashville: Im a new yorker and Im not south hatin, but are you talking about sales or skills. 2 seperate things, but here goes… 1) Jada-mwah 2) Styles P aka Ghost or the G-host, host to the G’s 3)Mos Def 4)Young Hov 5) Nas Well, Im not the hugest down south fan. Maybe its cuz a lot of “up north” rappers are bitin that chopped and screwed sound and it just sounds like garbage. Im not hatin, but I think regionally speaking, Im more Hi-Tek “Where it started at” than T.I. “shoulder lean”. I like it, just biased. I will say that Weezy and Jody Breeze got this ill ass song on the new Big Mike cd where they take a Beanie Siegal line “catch me if you can when Im dippin from the cops” and screwed it. Shit sound hot to def! And finally, is it me or does the “new”
Weezy sound like Sheen from Jimmy Neutron. Weezy F. Ultralord. HA!

I done seen basement tapes of San, Freeway, Pete Crakk, Indy, Jakk Frost and like any other dude rappin outta philly you could name. he either knows em, rapped wit em or rapped against em. And I dont care who hear, Im sayin it..San is waaaaaay better than Free. (dont know if he ever rapped w/ or against Cass, I think he left philly before Cass blew) They even talk a little shit in a tape! LMAO! He got caught up in some “mistaken identity but im no rat” shit so he’s incarcerated right now, but I rides wit my dude. 54th Street, Santana Soprano aka Kadafhi on a motorbike. Hold ya head my nigguh.

it’s not surprising that peeps from high school lipsync to Back that ass up. it’s the fact that they broke out all the blings and hoes (well, a sex doll) that is crazy. and this was like 6-7 years ago.
and nothing against the south, but i do like more melodic music, and not just sounds. lyrically, Nas takes the cake. flows better and tells stories better. just one man’s opinion.

Shiz,
I like your top five because even though I’m partial to the dirty I’m a hip hop head so i appreciate good music. The ghost is in my all around top three with Ghostface and 3000 so I’m prett complex with this hip hop stuff.. Nas and Jay are becoming cliche’ when talking about a top fives, tens and so forth but I guess that’s just testimony to their skill. Here is my top five in the south: 1)Scarface 2) Bun B 3)Weezy 4)3000 5)Jeezy. Face and Bun for Nas and Jay, Weezy going at Kiss “My Ass”, Jeezy going at the Ghost for the streets, and 3000 going at Mos Def on some ole’ def poetry jam sh!t which would be real interesting. I really could care less about sales so I just went on skill and who gets my blood pumping when I’m in the Olds’.

Oct.3 at 4:41 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
When I first heard Juvenile, I was like I’m not listening to this southern crap, you can’t understand what these guys are saying. This was when I was an underground hip-hop fan or backpacker or HATER. After a while I turned and I was a Juvenile fan like everyone else. But then i got into Wayne, and you can actually understand him, and I just think he’s better in every way, lyrically, musically, whatever. So what if he’s got a weird relationship with Baby and that he goes to art school and still talks about being a D boy.

Oct.3 at 5:28 pm

Shiz says:
Cashville: Thats funny you paired jeezy wit Styles cuz they got this sick ass song together. I forget the title but its bananas. I feel ya on the cliche’ guys. Hov, Nas, Face, Dre3000 are kinda like the always included but never diluted…But Im sorry… Kiss is eatin Weezy…all day, son. dum, da, da, dum, dum, dum THE CHAMP IS HERE! I just dont listen to dudes from the south like that. the only exposure I get is from the street tapes and mixtape type as I haven’t bought a Sam Goodie type cd in about 6 years…Big up all my african bootleggers, gettin me that hot sht fa cheap, ya heard?! Got them nextels chirpin like birds. Just dont get stuck in a store when the po roll thru! LMAO! We can laugh about Shaq, but the joint “no hooks” w/ the Rza and Meth is the truth. Dont laugh, Im burning it from LimeWire as we speak. Ha!

oh NZ Baller, that brought back memories. Shoot Pass Slam has to be one of the best tracks ever. it’s just great on so many levels. i actually really liked “you can’t stop the reign” but then i found out it was ripped from “you can’t stop the rain” so i was a bit disappointed. wonder if Daddy still does track in his house.
that reminds me, no one even mentioned BIG here… eh?

Oct.3 at 5:50 pm

Shiz says:
Albie: I was gonna mention B.I. but felt it was a cop out considering he’s gone. Plus Im REALLY biased. I live and die by B.I. And Shaq has done some recent stuff. You can tell by the lyrical content: “dont ask me nuthin bout Kob’, D McNabb, Terrell Owens” and for whatever reason, he still has respect enough to do joints wit Papooses, Kay Slay and get dissed by Skillz, and speaking of… Advice to Skillz: NEVER battle an athlete. Not only does it show how bored and broke you are, it makes you look like a bully…a bully pickin on a kid thats much stronger and richer than you I might add. I think Shaq’s put out more shit than son has in the last year. Skillz rap up for ‘06…dissin Shaq backfired, now I’m m.i.a. *bring in hook*

Oct.3 at 5:55 pm

Pat B says:
For all you Lil Wayne Fans….i have only this to say….Gillie Tha Kid…nuff said….The Carter I is a good album(still can believe im saying this) because of the ghostwriting Gillie did for him…i cant respect any mc that has someone ghostwrite for him….dude used to get BG, Juve and Turk to write his ish….you kids need to go bump some J Dilla or Termanology….enlighten your stupid minds….wake the F@#$ UP kids!!!!!! oh and Shiz no im not D.Dot aka The Madd Rapper and Lil Wayne sure as hell aint no Biggie Smalls…so your ref is pretty lame duke

Oct.3 at 5:59 pm

CASHVILLE says:
Shiz,
I would literally have to fight my way out of an argument down here if I said something as absurd as “Kiss is Eating Weezy”. I’ll just chalked that one up with you not listening to that much down south music. It seems like you need some gansta grillz in your life. On the flip side, you could damn near put L.O.X. in the top five up north including Nas and Jay. I’ll go out to my theme music like Jack Slade “put your hoodie on and just thug it on out, ACG boots thug it on out”.

Oct.3 at 6:05 pm

Pat B says:
So Lil Wayne is a better MC than Jadakiss now?????? WOW im not even going to dignify this with a response…

Oct.3 at 6:26 pm

NZ Baller says:
For sure Albie1…’Can’t stop the reign’ was a dope beat, still not a bad track. What about ‘Ya know I got skillz’??…lol. ‘I got a hand that’ll rock ya cradle,
cream you like cheese, spread you on my bagle,
my Ford Explorer boomin’ with the clumped-up funk,
all you jealous punks can’t stop my dunks,
‘ ‘What’s up Doc’ w/the FuSchnickens is bad though….his verse on that is class!

I’m tired of the backpackers (or whatever they call themselves) always hating on mainstream hip hop. Hip hop at its core IS braggadocio and if you can’t appreciate the flow and the clever metaphors of Wayne… well, it’s your loss. I listen to Com for a reason, I listen to Ghost for a reason, I listen to Murs for a reason, and I listen to Wayne for a reason. There’s something special and unique in all of them. Oh and by the way, ballers should never touch a mic under any circumstances (CWebb, AI, Kobe, TP, and even Shaq).

Oct.4 at 10:45 am

Shiz says:
Being a backpacker doesnt make you a hater. It simply means that you weigh more than just catchy hooks and catchy beats in your evaluation of the art.
1) Hip hop is the culture, rap is the art. KRS1 said that. IF you need further definition, dont even bother reading further.
2) The thing thats dispised by most backpackers is the oh-sooo-outta-this-world “braggadocio” (somebody was watching Beef on VH1). Take for example…all these rappers talking about how they deal crack.. if they did slang and supply like they say, they’d be locked up and 3/4’s of America would be crackheads.
3)Most underground dudes (myself included) hate being called “backpackers”…Originally backpackers was a term reserved for graffiti artists, cuz they kept all they’re spray cans in…yup you guessed it, backpacks. Just shows how mainstream shit is getting when even the underground heads get a mainstream twist.
4) its not so much a thing about hatin as it is about a certain level of disrespect. Kinda like watching J.R. Rider actin a fool on the court, you’d say he’s disrepecting the game of basketball. Its the same thing when I hear Nelly talk about how he’s hip hop…no brotha, you got it wrong, you aint hip hop, you TRL. This nigguh may have used to b the don or whatever, but now he like some MC Hammer shit to me. So if you guys are gonna hate on “supposed” haters, please know the history…the real history of hip hop, not whats shown on cable, cuz its all watered down and…well…mainstream. Its not a true representation of what the everyday dude goes through on the streets when their broke, dont have no super hot whips and all that bling but still graveyard shiftin it cuz they got a baby sister to feed. THAT is what “backpackers” hate on. The cool thing about hip hop is that every body is entitled to enjoy whichever brand of rap they desire, and not everybody is gonna enjoy the mainstream shit. No need to call em haters, it just makes ya sound ignant (mispelled on purpose). Cashville: You still my elif4aggin. The only gansta grillz I know about is DJ Drama (CANNON!) but like any true hip hopper Im down to learn how they get it in the dirty dirty… I know yall got BITCHES!! Claud have mercy, what do they be feedin em down there?! Similac child, drivin me wild… (see thats an old Black Sheep song…do the knowledge)

Back again. I’d put the Carter 1 and 2 against both Jada albums as being better. Styles is better than Jada, who is a glorified punchline artist. It’s funny that a common complaint from up north cats is that they can’t understant what southern rappers are saying? You think an up north accent is any easier to navigate? I liked the dude’s comments about how he can get stuff from many rappers. I can too. And Weezy does have nice metaphors, punchlines, personification and all the things that make good songs. His subject matter is just extremely limited, but then so is the subject matter of 95 percent of rappers. And that ain’t nothing new.

Oct.4 at 2:31 pm

Shiz says:
AllenP, I could go on and on about Jada’s and Style’s records and how they’re not really true extensions of each man’s respective gift…you could probably say the same about Weez…I wouldn’t know cuz I dont analyse son like that…not sayin he’s trash, cuz he’s not, but better than Jada is a strong, long leap of faith when its just different strokes for different folks. I also like Styles more than Jada. But Jada showed his ass during that beef wit Sieg…now that was hip hop war..and then Styles came thru an shut it down. and I feel you on the glorified punchline thing, but…aren’t most rappers glorified punchliners? Outside of earthy dudes like Mos and Dre3000, they all throw punchlines… Good comments throughout. I think I need some good ol fashion soul food.. And I think its proper to say that though we’re all using Weez and Jada as examples, its not specifically about them. Like AllenP’s comment: about the different accents, its a combination of drawl, speed, slang. so its easy to have that breakdown. Look at ATL to see the breakdown: shorty vs. son ya know its like a new yorker would be like “son, Im taller than you!” where a southerner would be like “yeah, shawty but I aint ya son either”. I dont think though that its a big deal to real dudes from up north or real dudes from the dirty, jus somethin we all can laugh about.

I agree allenp. Damn, that rymed. Jada’s second album was a joke. I let my friend borrow it when it first came out and I haven’t bothered to get it back since. I wasn’t really a big fan of Carter 2 either, but it was a descent album. I think people have the pre “squad up summer 02′” weezy mixed up with the post. He switched his style up that summer and it was over. He killed it on Dedication 2 with that “Georgia Bush”. I still trip on him talkin’ all that gun busting and getting shot, when this man actually shot himself looking in the mirror. But it’s aight, he’s still dope!!

Oct.4 at 2:50 pm

ya’ll keep posting because I can talk about this sh!t all day. The Ginobili forum next door doesn’t really interest me. Throwing more wood into that Jada and Styles P fire, I always felt like SP was the truth, not taking anything away from louch and Jason. Like I stated yesterday, he’s in my top five, maybe top three of my favorite emcees right now. By the way, when is that SP album dropping? It’s been pushed back more than Jerry Rice’s hairline.

Man I really wish a Gansta and a Gentlemen had done better soundscan wise, cuz that album was a true album, not just a bunch of catchy r&b raps and club joints. Lol. I worried about Sheek for a minute. It seemed like he was gonna get left behind, lyrically. After taxes he stepped up a bit, though. I think one thing we can agree on is that J-hood is garbage!! I keep waitin for son to improve and pfft…bubkis, nothin. Get dude outta there. Im waitin for that time is money myself. Shit if thats the case they losin money hand over fist, yah mean?! They need to c’mon! Two toothbrushes up! Dblock! If I had one wish though, it’d be a styles/jada album. They got that back-n-forth flow on lock.
