29. Joe Johnson
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today. Over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now. Today, Steve Smith and Dominique Wilkins take a look at Joe Johnson…
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today.
Over lunch at the Outback Steakhouse (word to Steve Irwin), your crack SLAMonline.com staff sat down and ranked the 50 best players in the NBA today. We realize that’s kind of ambiguous, but that’s how basketball is and that’s how we like it. Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment. This doesn’t mean they’ll never be traded, and it doesn’t mean they’re due tremendous contract extensions, but it does mean — since value is king in the NBA — that over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now.
Before long it’ll be time for our annual NBA team previews. Right now it’s time for some law and order…
29. Joe Johnson
by Dominique Wilkins, Atlanta Hawks Vice President and NBA Hall of Famer
You know what? Joe Johnson is a multi-dimensional player. He does a lot of different things. He’s one of those guys that can play two or three positions and play them all well. That’s what makes him so special, especially in today’s NBA, when it’s such a transitional game. Joe can go inside, he can go outside, he can put it on the floor, and he’s a perfect size at 6-7 or 6-8.
I think as far as his ability to handle the ball combined with his size, he kind of reminds me of Marques Johnson; he’s really that type of player, a guy who can play everything from the point forward to the two, and he definitely can play the three as well. And he can defend, too, he can defend, too.
by Steve Smith, 14-year NBA veteran, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist, 2003 NBA Championship with San Antonio
Before Joe Johnson came to Atlanta, I really didn’t know how good he was, but I’ve learned that he’s the type of player I like to watch. There’s some guys who do a little of this or that, but I was the kind of guy who tried to do a little of everything. And when I saw Joe come out of college at his height with his handle, I knew the sky was the limit for him: You can play him at one, you can play him at two, you can play him at three.
In my era, some of the guys with size and the ability to handle the ball were guys like myself, Magic, Penny. And I’m not saying none of us played defense — well, Penny did more than us, because myself and Earvin were not trying to guard anyone — but Joe can actually guard point guards. You don’t want him to do it 48 minutes, but he can really do it.
And then he can shoot it, he’s strong, he can rebound, he has three point range, he can drive. Probably the only thing Joe doesn’t do is that he doesn’t just jump over people, but I was always a guy who thought you can play longer when you’re not relying on that. It’s hard to pick out a weakness in his game, because he can get around somebody and get anything he wants because of his IQ of the game.

Ummmm, Dominique passed on that ranking? the H.H.F? Nique? Umm, well, umm, 29 sounds kinda right to me then.
Damn, you people just took the wind out of my sails. Nique and No. 8. How the heck am i supposed to argue against THAT? Great piece guys of slam. Thanks

JJ in the house! Good slot for him if were talking value but its still weird to see him ahead of kidd, benny wallace, redd, and manu. His triple threat capablities are steadily climbing. Plus he plays good D. If only the hawks had drafted Chris Paul. If that were the case they would be making big strides in the East. With JJ, Marvin’s and Josh smoove’s development along with the cap room they have floating around the hawks could be sweet sooner than expected.

Still think he shoul have stayed in the desert. Look at how Raja’s rep skyrocketed while playing there, Game winner, Kobe clobberer etc. Well, guess that’s not relevant anymore. He’s the man now with the hawks, enjoy it Mr.Johnson

You know what? Ya’ll (I’m from Texas) startin to piss me off fa real. Joe Johnson is a top 20 player in the league. He averaged 20,5,5 for crying out loud!!! Anyone else with these kind of numbers is a lock for top 10. That’s cool though, I guess the only way people will stop sleepin on Joe is when he makes his first all-star team this year. You heard it hear first…

It was dissapointing to see JJ. get limited minutes on coach K’s team this summer though. His decision making, and high percentage 3 Point shooting were missed against Greece, especially because Kirk couldn’t stop any of their big guards. Today’s debate has begun. Guys, seeing the words of Nique and Steve Smith, I beg to ask why haven’t we seen more entries from former player, or maybe even some current guys in the league. This can actually add some validity to this list if the actual comment on each player was made by other NBA players past or present. I think this some groundbreaking material. Hope to see more of it in the future.
Oct.6 at 11:53 am
Ron says:
Rob, if the Hawks would have offered a little more than Josh Childress and a pick, AI would in the backcourt with JJ. Too bad the hawks management didn’t want to part with another player or 2.

Damn, who can argue with Nique. I mean he is a HOFamer. I had an argument with my homies over the summer about the U.S.A. basketball team and how Allen Iverson could get turned down and Joe Johnson get an invite. You would have thought I was talking to someone in JJ’s entourage. All I kept hearing was “he can do this” and “he can do that”. It didn’t help me any when he effortlessly crossed someone up and made a lay up on the highlight we were watching. It was like pie in my the face but who could argue against Allen I? I thought I had a valid argument! Despite the misunderstanding I never said that I didn’t recognize his talent. I was a fan back in the Phoenix days when they had Penny (GOD BLESS THE PENNY FANS) and saw glimpses of goodness, not neccessarily greatness but he has come along recently to prove me wrong. His game will always be gangsta to me because he is named after some projects in Nashville. Put Ya Hood Up!!!

Being from Phoenix and being a Suns fan, I still only have respect for JJ. I was upset upon hearing he was leaving but I can understand that minutes and a paycheck would be important to anyone. He is getting acclaim now but I could see he had a really nice game from the beginning. I wish him luck in ATL and only hope that we can hopefully get another great player out of that trade.

Motion granted Mr. Ron. No need for a debate whatsoever. How about it “crack” Slamonline staff? Magic and sir charles ranking players? Kevin Willis and the admiral comparing modern biceps to their arms? His airness stating the top 3 and leaving Kobe 23+1 out of it? This has merit, and you have the contacts.

Im starting to wonder if chris webber was left off this list as well, actually scratch that he is def was left off… he was the most underappreciated 20 and 10 guy last season….ya its sad that he lost his explosiveness and with that his rebounding ability, quickness, and dunks due to injuries but regardless, he remains a dope passer, manages to grab boards on lousy knees, has a good mid ranger and decent 3 pt shot, still pulls off his signature hook shot, and last but not least puts up 20 pt nights on a team with AI on it. I dont think he should be in the top 28 but its a shame not see him in the top 50. He might be half the player he once was but he is sitll doing his thang. Give it up for Cwebb, i aint mat ya anymore for smoking pot until the wiz owner abe pollin pulled a knucklehead move and traded you for a past his prime mitch richmond.

Ron says:
Point well taken, but not many of these write-ups mention the negatives. Since everything being said is about how great the players are, and what they can do as oppose to the things they can’t, Vince and Tracy would fit right in. However a Shaq on Kobe commentary would be something out of this planet. Even if Shaq were to take a diplomatic approach his quotes would have all of us rolling in rib splitting laughter.

SteveSmith#8 fan says:
Nice write up about JJ. This is about right for him. I was a big Steve Smith fan growing up and JJ’s game really reminds me of the way Smitty played (during his Heat and Hawks years). I don’t think that Smitty was putting himself in the same class as Magic. He was just using himself and Penny as examples of bigger guards who could play a number of positions and who could not guard point guards. Smitty is a classy guy who would never put himself out there like that. He has too much respect for Magic. Alot of the younger SLAM fans just remember Steve Smith as the slow jump shooter towards the end of his career. But coming out of MSU he was the real deal. During his time with the Heat he was one of top young players in the game (1st team all-rookie). During his time with the Hawks he was one of the most underrated players in the league (I know Lang can vouch for that). Smitty was one of the first guys to get label the “Next Magic”.

I love the way Joey plays. Cooold aaaaas iiiiice (you’re cold as ice to me). He just glides out there on the court like he’s skatin fa real. His facial expression never changes either. Takes it strong with either hand, finishes with polish. Can and will stick the 3ball, rebounds extremely well for someone so athletic (it seems the more athletic guys are, the less they wanna rebound). When he grabs a board and goes coast to coast with it, runnin that 6′8′’ fastbreak and then dishes it I keep waitin for him to take it back to White Men Can’t Jump and Kyle Watson and the Black Zorro and go “this shit is TOO easy!…fuck it, I quit, Im goin home” and just walk off the court. JJ’s a dog and will get into them skivvies on D. ONe of my favorite dudes. And Steve Smith was my dude. He had me actually wantin to go to East Lansing. That behind the back post dribble was
un-fuck-witable. He had options off that shit too. Thats what made it so ill. He could either take it all the way baseline for a reverse or fade away.. And what can you say about Nique. His H.O.F. nomination came about 5 years too late…never mind the technicality of dudes needin to be retired. He didn’t make top 50 and handled it with more class than the powers-that-be deserved…And STILL cant nobody tomahawk that shit like Nique. Whoo! that shit was like lightnin in a can! I loved him on Joes vs. Pros. Puttin little 5′7″ guys in the post and talkin that old man shit. Like “oh yeah, young fella!” Classic Nique shit. I hope he’s a part of All-Star weekend this year. I Remember when he dunked it during the 3 on 3 comp a couple years back and the whole joint went bananas. Behold the power of the Nique…

gilbert arenas should comment on himself. That would be outstanding. Dude is officially the funniest player in the L. Hiding teamates’ uniforms in locker rooms, playing online poker at halftime, taking showers with his uni on, the huge tat of the tiger on his chest, thining out the air in his house to replicate the altitude in the mile high city, once took a free throw during a reg. season game by bouncing it off the ground as a member of the warriors, making up a story about flipping a coin to decide if he signed with the wiz or the clips, lost to shaq in a 3 pt contest at the allstar game, the list goes on and on for gilbertology. Good lookin’ Rob, I’m going to read that later, though I’m sure no matter what is written (since it’s being posted on ESPN.com), it’ll be censored and tame compared to what Scoop really wants to convey. I’m not a blind loyalist (even though I’m mad loyal to SLAM mag) so I try to stay objective. I DO think Wilbon has some good points, but at the same time, all the people who bash Scoop just because he’s DIFFERENT are in the wrong. If they don’t like his WRITING, it’s cool. But it sounds like a lot of people just bash on him because he’s DIFFERENT. I thought Sole Provider was one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read. Sure, Scoop’s got his own STYLE, but to me, he’s an artist and that’s what separates him from so many other sports writers out there. Since we’re on the White Men Can’t Jump vibe today, it’s like when Wesley told Woody, “You listen to Jimi, but you don’t HEAR him.” A lot of writers can write, but few have the GIFT. Scoop Jackson has the gift. He has “it” (ah, the omnipresent and mysterious “if”). That still doesn’t mean I like all of his work. I DO think he plays the race card too much for his own good, and some of his work is just over my head but for the most part, I recognize his gifts and talent…OK…enough. We now return to our regularly scheduled “Joe Johnson, Steve Smith, Penny Hardaway” post.

Glad you guys got Steve Smith to do commentary here…ironic, seeing as how after Tricky and Mookie Blaylock were sent away, the Hawks immediately went from playoff regulars to lottery regulars (Lang should be able to back me up on that one, the Hawks have been struggling ever since the 1999 lockout playoff series vs the Knicks). Granted, bad trades, draft picks and Lenny Wilkens contributed to the madness, but that’s the jumping off point, for sure. Joe Johnson is a solid player, but my concern is that by the time the Hawks become a consistent playoff team, his body and/or skills will be on the decline (similar to Michael Finley’s tenure with the Dallas Mavericks). Until then, Joe will put 25+ on any team, easy.

Dont forget Shaq, luis. He may not be the diesel of old, but he still changes the game with his presence alone…

A page for an editor at Slam instant messaged me that Ben Gordon is in the top 10.

Teddy-the-Bear says:
I hoped that Joe would make at least top 20. Thats kinda messed man he is still underrated, at least not as much by Slam though. HOPEFULLY, Brad Miller won’t be on this list, just hopefully. I predict him somewhere in the next 3 numbers though. but Joe is more useful than Brad. DEFINITELY

Is it just me, or do all these Kidd fluffers not know that the guy is playing on one leg, and his career has only been extended because he plays with Carter and Jeff?

JJ is a great player, good pick but hes numbers arent any better than Ricky Davis’ and Ricky is playin with KG, JJ is pretty much on a team where he can be a stat sheet stuffer.
I bet you Ricky isn’t making the list…Not that I’m saying that he should but just to put it in perspective.

Ahhhh! My boy Joe Johnson! Shoulda been higher, but I can live with 29. I think he should have been top 20 at least. Anyone who actually had the chance to see him play in ATL, which is pretty rare unless you live in Georgia or you have League pass, knows that J.J. is a special player. Dude does it all and how can you not get excited about a 6-7 point forward who can defend? Doesn’t get much better than that in my opinion!

I just wanted to say that I think, compared to Carter, Joe Johnson is the superior overall basketball player, but Carter is definitely more accomplished as an individual. I guess it’s difficult to compare nba players with former presidents, but I’m just putting that out there.

Joe Johnson for Rodgers and Delk great trade. Sometimes being a celtic fan is rough but Boston will return to the playoffs this year. I hope.

Carlos, Joe Johnson is definetly top 20. Look at the numbers man. You won’t see another 20,5,5 guy on this list until at least top 20.

simmysosa…johnson wasn’t a 20,5,5 guy last year.

Carlos(mexican not argentine so im not a homer) says:
even if he was a 20 5 and 5 guy which he wasnt stats dont mean everything…put JJ on the nets and richard jefferson on the hawks and RJ would be putting up monster numbers IMO…but still that wouldnt make RJ top 20 neccesarily
