18. Paul Pierce
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today. Over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now. Today, Sam Rubenstein takes a look at Paul Pierce.
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today.
Over lunch at the Outback Steakhouse (word to Steve Irwin), your crack SLAMonline.com staff sat down and ranked the 50 best players in the NBA today. We realize that’s kind of ambiguous, but that’s how basketball is and that’s how we like it. Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment. This doesn’t mean they’ll never be traded, and it doesn’t mean they’re due tremendous contract extensions, but it does mean — since value is king in the NBA — that over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now.
Before long it’ll be time for our annual NBA team previews. Right now it’s time for some law and order…
18. Paul Pierce
By Sam Rubenstein
This is a tough call. Paul Pierce is coming off his best season, surrounded by a cast of mostly young, unproven players. He never misses games, playing in 79 games or more every year since 2001. He’s been on some bad teams, became the franchise player on a young upcoming team, played great in the playoffs, and with that team rebuilding again, he’s still there. Without Pierce, who knows how bad the Celtics would be. With him, they almost made the playoffs.
Then there’s that word “almost.” Paul’s numbers were 26.8/6.7/4.7. A monster year, highlighted by a month where it felt like he scored 30 every night and willed the eam to victory. The Celtics record was 33-49. In fact, the Celtics have been going backwards since their Eastern Conference Finals trip in 2002 when Pierce famously sparked one of the greatest single game playoff comebacks ever against the Nets.
He’s 29 now, and after last year, his value is as high as it will ever be. There’s no denying he’s a great player, but it’s hard to put that into context because it’s hard to tell what the Celtics are.

I don’t know if there’s a team in the League with better young talent than the C’s right now. Leon Powe (who I think was the steal of the 2nd round), Rajon Rondo, Gerald Green, Al Jefferson, Bassy, Delonte West, Tony Allen, and Ryan Gomes. How in the world does Doc Rivers find minutes for these guys? I’m interested to see how Wally and Pierce play the role of “seasoned vets” this year. If they can get these young cats to play together, this team will definitely make the playoffs and might even make some noise. BTW, the past 2 weekend versions of the Top 50 (I think it was Gasol and Vince)…WOW. I mean, is this a basketball website or 2nd grade “I know you are, but what am I?” recess? What on earth is going on in here? Arguing and talking smack will always have its place in sports, but can’t we all respect each other’s opinions a little more without stooping to such low levels? As much as I like leaving comments (as many of you can attest to), it almost would make me feel better about this site if comments were disabled.

Wow, thats a blow for pierce right there. C’m on, give Paul Pierce some love! The article is talking too much about the celtics. You should’ve focused more on his game, his heart, his bsaketball brains!!!

Pierce is worthy of that #18 spot

Bryant Reeves says:
Those numbers from last year were sick. 18th seems perfect (maybe even a little low). This guy is tough - dude got stabbed in the face! - and should provide the perfect example for all the young guns on his team (except for the obligatory chest pounds after tought shots). Of all the players listed thus far, Pierce is probably the only one that is the undisputed leader of his team. Nice one Slam.

He’s not worthy of 18th it should be given to Ray Allen

Remember PP filled out the stat sheet last year with swollen bum elbow filled with puss. Yes, the C’s have a truckload of sick young talent, but those kids are gonna have to step it up this season. They won’t shut anybody down, but as long as they board & hang on to the ball, they’ll win their share of games.

Will says:
The thing about Paul Pierce last season is that he seemes disinterested when the stakes are not that high; meaning, games not on national TV. Or games not against the elite SF/SGs of the NBA (Lebron, Kobe, Vince etc).
You can call that “elevating your game” but if it only results in 33W for your team, it’s not “elevating your game”, it’s “selective hard work”.

Pretty good player…On the verge of greatness, just not my favorite personally. He’s got one of those sloppy lookin bodies, but that spin move is unstoppable… My favorite PP moment was when he showed up to answer questions with his jaw completely wrapped in gause…He’s a clown (I mean that in a good way)… Seems to me he gets a bad rep for being “cocky” or arrogant. Im pretty sure the whole stabbing incident was a part of that misconception. but who knows… PP set the precident for NBA guys gettin yolked in the club…

how does every1 continually want to give bosh a cover. he needs to continue to prove himself, sure dwade, and bron got theirs but they have proved it tht they are worth the hype by leading their team to the playoffs. yea bosh might not have the supporting cast but he still needs to solidify himself against the games stars.

Well, once Slam gave Chamique a cover, then pre-high-school graduates LeBronze and Bassy, it was pretty much a done deal that you can get a cover without “proving yourself”… What I’m wondering is when are we gonna get back to the “action shot” photo’s like the Johnny Starks issue where he’s hanging from the rim looking down at the camera (I know I just took it back to like…issue 2)… Im just sayin…after all these nba dudes gettin shot, stabbed, run over and basically just bullyfoot…maybe we should shy away from the “gangsta, ice-grill the camera” cover shot for a while…

i think that one goes down as the biggest smile in slam cover history. i’d also like to see more photos with animals. we’ve seen kobe and the snake. can we get chris bosh and his twin brother E.T. next cover? i’ve actually been influenced by slam covers and now whenever i pose for pictures, i never smile either. at least i haven’t been influenced by ESPN the mag, else i’d be taking my shirt off for all my photos. i’m paler than white chocolate, man.
yeah, shiz…i’m hoping for more huge smiles like jasyon williams on the old nets cover.

Fianlly Some love for Boston. Paul Pierce is deserving of #18. Pierce is probably one of the top ten players in the league but in terms of value I can understand him being 18. Hope your right Myung I keep thinking that Boston can win 45 games in the weak eastern conference and sneak into the playoffs. Rondo is going to be the still of the draft. I didn’t think much of him at first but Rondo looks like he should have been a lottery pick what a theft at #21. It is nice to read posts stating so and so sucks and no explanation. Pierce only lead his team in every statistical category and had the best year of his career.
Oct.23 at 5:37 pm
scott says:
No Rondo on the list I guess because he is a rookie. 17 spots left and we know they are going to Gilbert Arenas, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett, Elton Brand, Dirk Nowitzki, Dwight Howard, Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, and Andrei Kirilinko.

there must be a way for slam to censor the comments that are just smack and sound like they were written by ex-jocks who never learned grammar or typing. Personally, in the past month or so I’ve really come to question just who exactly is the average slam view? Is he educated, informed, and classy like myung? Or just some trash-talking ‘hood machine shamelessly repping some fetish he has for a certain hometown player? Despite its “hip-hop” image I’ve always felt that SLAM was never given enough credit as a true basketball magazine with great informaton, superb writers and scoops that you couldn’t get anywhere else. If everyone who reads it turns out to be like the majority of the posters on this site then I’m going to have to take a good hard look at the past 6 years I’ve spent buying their product. Hell, I once dropped 25 US dollars at a Thai airport for a single issue of english slam. And now it seems like all the people who read the mag (or at least bother to comment here) just open it up and browse at the pictures of players dunking, utter some profane proclamation of pleasure, and move on. It’s disillusioning…

AK47 is a bitch - I’m sick of hearing about him! The Jazz suck!
Paul Pierce is the man! He’s got all the moves you could ever want in a superstar… he’s silky smooth in ALL areas of his game. If the Celtics actually wanted to win, they would trade some of their young guns & draft picks for KG, JO or they could even settle for AI! I feel for Pierce, he’s just wants to be Celtic for life but the organisation keeps fucking him around!

still, i REALLY don’t love it. Jadakiss is that milwaukee gaurd with the ill shot. iverson is DMX. and mike jones is mike jones SLAM was way better back then. Now like the so called dilution of streetballin, SLAM’s gone pop. The soul from the writing has gone.

Pierce is definitely too low on this list as there are a bunch of guys yet to be named who aren’t better than him. Worse yet, there wasn’t even any real reasoning for him being this low, just some drivel about the Celtics not knowing what they are. How does that make Pierce worse? List is was hovering on laughable already but thanks, now i know it is.

Chief says:
Nobody ever talks smack about Melo while i’m alive cause the Chief rules the Sky and Land. He will be numba 2 cause Lebron will be numba 1. Now the Truth is that when everyone thinks of good ballers in the L i don’t think Paul Pierce is ever on the tip of the tongue cause he doesn’t resound at all as a dominant player. He may have some nice stats but we all know that stats only tell a part of the story(Ben wallace averages like 6-10 pts a game but he is the Shit). And let’s stop trash talking each other. Rousseau once said “I don’t agree with your opinion, but i will defend to the death your right to voice it” that is the ideal that democratic countries are based on so i think we should respect each other but still have the ability to voice a debate for our arguements.
i’m tired of reading “pierce sucks” or “Vince is a bitch” with no real substance. Unless u know your ball i don’t want to hear it, leave something of value not just a holla.

The celtics will make the postseason this year, write it down

Myung says:
So calling me Myung Chung WASN’T racist but was…what? You contradicted yourself by saying we don’t know you so we shouldn’t judge you, yet you calling me Myung Chung was one 2 things. (1) You were being ignorant by perpetuating the stereotype for Asians (like Shaq and his “Ching chang chong” comment a few years back) or (2) You were acting like you knew me by calling me Myung Chung and in fact, were guessing that my last name was in fact Chung, when in fact (gasp), it isn’t. So which was it? Were you being racist or acting like you knew me, when in fact, you haven’t the slightest clue? DP, I’ve never once made fun of you or hit below the belt. Maybe others have. The worst thing I called you was a broken record (for obvious reasons). If you can’t handle being called a broken record, then you just might be the most sensitive person on these boards. If you want to get personal and call me Myung Chung (you can call me a chink if you want to stick your chest out a litle further), that’s fine. I won’t lose sleep over it. Speaking of, I should sleep. I can’t wait to wake up and see a profanity laced comeback, with the ubiquitous “Play wit it” to boot.

Personally, Pierce’s game may not be “easy on the eyes” like VC’s acrobatics when he goes to the hoop once a game, but I think that he’s the best “non-dribbling” scorer in the league. After watching numerous Celtics games, I’ve come to the conclusion that PP could catch, fake, shoot every time, or just catch and shoot, and still score at least 10-15 a game without dribbling the ball. Not that he can’t dribble, but his ball fakes are solid.

right here right now paul pierce is ‘THE TRUTH.’ This position is way too low for him. pdub was the only reason the celtics won 33 games. there’s no one else in his team but the fact is they were still able to win games coz of him. so how important do you think he is to a team? Melo will be somewhere near the top of this list and i tell you now that if pdub and melo traded places the nuggets would’ve smashed most teams in the playoffs. the guy is Mr 4th quarter. he may not have the 40-50 point perfomances other guys might have but he’s clutch, not only when it’s tight at the end, he’s there when you need him during the game when the other team look like they’re going on a run to catch up or pull away, he makes plays, scoring from both the inside and outside. he doesn’t quit. i watched that game against the nets when he single handedly brought them back and won, now there are gonna be some guys higher on the list that have the ability to this, eg. kobe, wade, duncan and iverson and couple others but anyone else that’s higer than him that can’t, does not belong there. Because i don’t know anything more value to a team than a player that can consistently, single handedly make his team competetive and sometimes, even win the game on his own. you already insulted the man by putting him at 18, you could have put a better write up. you guys made joe johnson seem like the shit and this is all you could do for the man at 18. if i was not a basketball fan but was just starting to get into it and stumbled on this site and thought that, yes…. a ‘difintinive look’ at the top 50 players in the league…. score, but in the end all i would now about paul pierce is that the celtics sucked last season. booo!!!

Oct.24 at 8:33 am

one could probably argue pierce is the most valuable to his team of any player on this list so far. take pierce out of that boston lineup and they would struggle to win 15 games.

Okay, whatever. I would cuss right now, but you know I really don’t feel like it. Myung, ha I am not sensitve because I like to see feedback. Whether it is negative or positve. Chief, I really didn’t read your post I just saw my name in there and I felt like saying something about that. Myung, didn’t know you were an ASIAN. I thought it was a nickname. I am not, however saying I am sorry for saying what I said. In my opinion it wasn’t racist so get over it. Good comeback. You didn’t know I was Asian? You thought Myung was a nickname? Like…my name is actually Jerome Johnson or Steve Weinstein, but I like to be called Myung? That’s actually sort of funny, and I’m not putting you down, DP. That’s actually…funny. I also like the “in my opinion, it wasn’t racist.” I’m all for the “we’re all entitled to our opinions” line of thinking, but sometimes, our opinions are straight up asinine. In my opinion, I’m a 6′6″ black guy with a 40″ vertical…but I just might be the only guy with that opinion. In your opinion, you weren’t being racist…so wow…I guess you weren’t being racist. Wow. It’s just that simple. Neat. Look, dude, I aint mad at you…I’d only have to “get over it” if it affected me to begin with. I’ve heard much more racist things in my lifetime growing up in the South so I can deal with your little ignorant comment and brush it off like Shaq being guarded by Tyronn Lue. I admire your “me against the world” mentality, but if you really want to improve on your “f the world” status, I’ve got advice for you: why don’t you stop replying back to each person’s gripe against you? Just brush it off, homie. I called you a broken record, and you couldn’t take it. If you’re as tough as you’re trying to sound, why don’t you just be like TrippleX and take the abuse without firing back? Maybe you’ll get your own Monta Ellis/ Kyle Lowry SLAM write-up that way.

I think Pierce, at #18, is the 1st guy to appear on this list that could have been in the top 10. I know that everybody loves Iverson, Melo and T-Mac, but he is better than those guys.

There’s something disturbing about a man that continually uses the phrase “play with it” as a signature… It reminds me of that Rob Snieder movie The Hot Chick where he switches bodies with a broad…The chick’s in his body and has never pissed standing up before…So she’s in a bar bathroom and the soap guy (there’s always a soap and mint guy in the men’s bathroom) is giving her pointers on how to…ummm..control her release and after she/he’s done he goes “Remember! More than three shakes an ya playin with it!!” Lol. Now THATS funny… Bring on AK47. Sure he’s injured and Sloan’s Salt Lake Shooters suck and all but he cant get much higher on this list, though he shoulda been in the bottom 10 or 15.

About three years ago, I was fortunate to get a ticket to a playoff game between the celts and pacers in Boston. That game was rediculous! One play that stood out - right before the half and PP is killing the pacers, Artest looked like an average cat gettin done at rucker. PP has the ball setting it up for the last shot at the top of the key, and artest is in his defensive stance getting ready, all of a sudden Al Harrington pushes ronron out of the way almost as if he was saying to ron “let me shut this dude down cause you can’t”. At that point it seems as if PP said somthing to Al like “so you want some too” and a second later PP jab steps forward and then steps back and launches pure water, the did not shake. The Pick should have been higher.

hey, I never posted here before, but my people from c’sblog linked this so I had to look at it - I just wanted to tel 10zzy that I remember that exact play w/ PP at the top of the key, jawin’ and noddin’, and I was like “stick um! he got no respect!” — and PP made Harrington look stupid…. he rattled it home from like 25 at the top of the key….. pure clutch - that’s your boy - he’ll put his money where his mouth is, and someone said here that he’s a top 10 player but the value at 18 is right…. well I have to agree w/ that, that seems accurate, but I would pick him 1st against Kobe, Bron, T-Mac, and I really
don’t think Wade and Melo are next to those guys yet as far as balance, so…. if the young ‘uns even half step up, we’ll see him actually raise his all-around (assists) game this year, and that’s scary….. he got it all

to say pierce only shows up in big games and is disinterested is the dumbest thing ive ever heard. ive neever seen a more upset and hurt player after the cewltics tr aded away there winnings team to become a bad one with paul doing what he wants every night. if he dindt care he owuld love to gun all night and not look at the outcome but he does care. I work for Elias and over past five years weve done a study on what players take the most charges and get to the line using a ratio to determine the amount of heart plasyers have. Paul Pierce is first on offense with drawing contact and he has taken the most chaarges in the L the past five years. how is that not caring?

If you’re REALLY rating a NBA MVP on the player most valuable to his team, Pierce wins, hands down. THey don’t get the wins, but consider that he’s pretty much playing in the NBA with a high school all-star team, and he still manages 30-40 wins a season. Pierce is the MVP

To me, there’s nothing really that exciting about P Dub’s game, but night in and night out there are few players who can control a game like him. If you read the Celts preview on my site (www.jcherot.blogspot.com), you’ll see I’m a little iffy on Beantown this year, but one thing’s for sure: 28/6/5.

i got a solid reason for pierce not being top 15, he was overheard telling another opponent(who had won rings) saying some shit how as long as he gets his he doesnt care about winning rings…pierce might be a great player he isnt a leader that is for sure

yo myung i saw the comment history and no disrespect but you contradicted yourself on this whole stick to basketball theme. Let it go man. Whether its racist or not is debatable. Theres a reason for stereotypes, I’m mexican i can take jokes. They joke about mexicans fitting 30 people into a jetta. heres another one: why dont mexicans have a good olympic team…..drum roll….because every mexican that can run, jump, and/or swim well has already crossed the border…lighten up

I’ve yet to look at the top 17, but there are not 17 players in the league better than Truth.
As far as all around game, other than Kobe, Lebron, Wade, name me someone better? I can see putting Nash and Duncan better than PP, and in the future Dwight Howard, but as of now?
There is NO WAY there are 18 people better than Peirce.
What did you guys do, get Alexi Lalas to put together this list? F’in dispicable.

ei…i think paul pierce must be in the top 10 list…look if boston have no paul pierce they would be a hawks team winning just 15 games…and also i think paul pierce is better than wade coz wade can’t shoot, all he can do is to drive and wade can’t do pierce “spin move’s” (he’s very unstoppable) see at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpKr7XlHywg He’s better than wade, iverson, carmelo, arenas…. ps…ei 1Ozzy i remember that that game…when al harrington looks stupid when paul pierce shoots over him…

this list is way off kobe, duncan, garnett, yes everybody else no.. come on 18 besides kobe who’s more clutch and wade matter fact
I Copied This……..
Some people say a man is defined by the company he keeps. For Paul Pierce, definition can be found in the company he kills. Check P-Double’s resume from last season alone: 43 points against Ray Allen in December. A February run of 40 against Marion, 31 against D-Wade, 50 against LeBron, 30 against Kirilenko and 39 against Kobe. In March, it was 38 against Wade, 31 against Arenas, 36 against ‘Melo and another 34 against Wade.
Yes, we all know basketball is a team sport, but take a moment to focus on Pierce the individual. If basketball writers thought along the same lines as baseball writers, The Truth could have even been the MVP — the A-Rod of the NBA. Because even though the Celtics have not been title contenders for a minute, Pierce is perhaps the single most indispensable player in the League considering all he does for his squad. With Pierce, Boston barely missed the playoffs in 2006. Without him? They might rack up Ls at a Washington Generals-type clip.

EIGHTEENTH? SLAM- are you serious? PP is top 10 in the L- he has been for the last couple of years. It doesn’t help either with the lame reasoning. You name PP 18th then talk about the Celts? THis guy is CLUTCH. #8-10 in my books. I’m not even a Celtics fan: 18th?- give me a BREAK.
