The Worst Injury Of The Year

Marquis Daniels takes an early lead…

by Lang Whitaker

This is going to be a new running feature, where we periodically examine some of the more horrible injuries that occur during the NBA season. And already, before training camp has even tipped off, we have an early candidate for The Worst Injury Of The Year.

New Indiana Pacers acquisition Marquis Daniels may miss the start of training camp. Why? According to the Indy Star…

Daniels is dealing with occasional problems following a procedure to remove a toenail on his left big toe.

“Doctors decided to remove the toenail permanently,” Carlisle said. “It’s a healing process that’s taken time.”

I brought this up in a SLAM meeting earlier and nearly made everyone sick. How painful must that be? As Khalid wondered, what happens next? Does skin grow there? Does the skin grow in hard or grow in soft?

And if you really want to be sick, just go here.

Whatever happens, his feet still won’t look as bad as Damon Jones’s.

Ryan Jones says:
Seriously, Russ, you’re gonna scare the kids. Anyway, pretty much the whole SLAM staff has seen DJ’s feet, and most of the other guys feet in the League. You spend enough (or too much) time in NBA lockerrooms, as we all have, and you see a lot more of these ballplayers than you’d like to.

I’m still in therapy for seeing Dikembe Mutombo’s feet.

Lol. The toe with the nail completely removed didn’t look so bad. I’m mad that they said you can put a fake nail or nail polish on it though. Is there a market for Lee press-on toenails?

This is so nasty people. This is a new low for boring off-season banter.

I’m having flashbacks to Lang posting some pics of surgery on his wife’s foot…

This may be the start of another chapter in the evolution of the human body. Do we need toenails? Fingernails i can understand because we need them to scratch and assist in picking up objects, but toenails? They must be leftover from when we were primates and could use our feet to grab things, right? One day a baby will be born missing a couple of toenails and it will look to Marquis Daniels as it’s pioneer.

i actually have a very mild case of ingrown toenail right now, i believe from one too-intense pickup run at the university gym. and you people just had to get me all paranoid and scared. gosh.

Gerwin Nijeboer says:
People! Why scaring the shit out of everybody? I’ve been dealing with ingrown toenails for as long as I play basketbal and am operated at least once a year for it. The most pain is there when you actually have the ingrown nail (and can hardly walk or someone steps on it…) After the surgery it’s one day recovering (feet up!) and then back to the asphalt! Why all that ‘the healing process may take a lot of time’ talk. Come on, get though. Peace!

Froggiestyle says:
Ingrown isn’t the only way to lose ‘em. Between playing ball (football) and hoops I lose my toenails usually twice a year, they grow back but yea it’s nasty and painful. You can give em as gifts at holiday time. “This (really) came from me” – “100% naturalllll”

I have to agree with gerwin….I really don’t see what the big deal is with this is because worst case scenario is when you have an ingrown toenail and someone lands on it while coming down from a rebound or whathave you is that you are in a lot of pain going up the court in transition…..but next time down it’s out of your mind as your trying to block your opponents shot or grab a rebound…this injury should be on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to torn acl and what not….again after surgery they say wait 2-3 days but 1 is usually fine and your back to normal maybe more depending if more than one toe….I trully think this is probably one of the best “injury’s” an athlete can get because of the lack of recovery time and long term effects…..needless to say this is one very overrated headline in my opinion….but that said you guys are still the best read when it comes to basketball by far

Cheryl says:
Well, yeah, but maybe he had an infection before the surgery. That could lengthen recovery time, too. Anyway, the season needs to start soon, cuz we’re discussing some really crazy stuff during this offseason!

Jake says:
hey Lang,
I had a toenail injury exactly like that my senior year in highschool. they basically cut it off with a scalpal and wrap it in guaze. It’s really not the greatest feeling. I had a game the same day though and played, I guess it’s all personal preferance. The skin grows over it really hard, like another nail.Kind of gross huh?

Home from school one afternoon, I was chillin’ in my room at my grandparents pad. I liked to play my guitar upstairs at their house because they were more deaf than my parents and I could get away with playing longer before the inevitable shut-down. The whole thing happened in slow motion. I was strapping on my guitar when I realized the the strap wasn’t attached at the bottom. Anyone who knows guitars knows there’s a pin sticking out from the butt that’s generally made of metal: http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/reactr04/img_strappins_ab_lg.jpg So when I swung it over over my head it fell straight to the floor, the pin popping me square on my bare big toe. It hit so hard that the guitar (about 20 lbs of solid maple) bounced BACK UP IN THE AIR. So I fall down, lips tightened in the oh-shit circle, holding my toe as the guitar lay on the floor screeching with feedback. It was so loud my grandmother actually heard it and immediately started pounding on the ceiling. My toenail turned purple that night. A week later, it was completely white. A week after that it came off painlessly as I was changing my band-aid. There was a rough, lopsided mini-me toenail underneath that eventually grew into the real thing. It wasn’t “normal” for a few years but now I can’t tell the difference. Yes, it hurts. No, it’s not a big deal. That said, I wouldn’t have wanted anyone (let alone a 265-lb. basketball player) landing on it. God help you if that happens. Take a seat Marquis. (But as bad as I feel for you and your toe, I’m glad the Mavericks traded you!) JJ
