Speedy Claxton Can’t Outrun a Broken Hand

Something finally stopped them…

by Lang Whitaker

OK, it was barely 24 hours ago that we established the Atlanta Hawks used to be unstoppable — shoot, they were Atlanta’s Air Force.

Since then, not so much. This summer has been great, though. Besides the young guns — J-Chill, Marv and J-Smoove — the Hawks drafted Shelden Williams, who if nothing else will be good for six fouls each night.

Still, the biggest news for Hawks fans this summer was the signing of a point guard — finally — as the Hawks inked Speedy Claxton to a four-year deal. At long last the team had a really good, quality, proven point guard to run the show. And Hawks fans, we finally had hope.

And then I just got word, moments ago, that Speedy Claxton broke his left hand playing pick-up ball (on Monday) and is likely out 4-5 weeks.

The NBA season? Starts in 4-5 weeks.

Here we go again.

Geez. I’d hoped for a bad season from the Hawks - something like screwed chemistry and the like - because my Suns are owed a pick outside of the top 3 in 2007 (unprotected in 2008), but I almost feel bad about it now….. NOT!!!!! Not with the big wet bite the injury bug took out of Phoenix last season. Hell, even Jumaine Jones is just now getting over an ankle sprain & he ain’t even donned a Phoenix uni yet! You guys ain’t even whiffed injury trouble like the snake-bitten Suns have been through….. I don’t wish injury on anyone or any team, but I’m sure not gonna feel sorry for the fans of the team with said injuries - not after the BS and criticism the Suns have had to endure despite it. I mean, before last season, who predicted that Boris Diaw was going to be a starting center in the league?

The Hawks are cursed since they traded Wilkens away.

Put a tent over the Hawks, and they’re a freaking circus. I don’t feel bad though, Lang - at least you have a team. I feel worse for Sonics fans. I was once a loyal Vancouver Grizzlies fan…..

Hahah, SwingMan, you’re kicking Hawks fan while they’re down. The karma gods are gonna bite you in the ass haha (though I hope that dosent happen cuz Phoenix is one of the dopest teams in the League)] Not kicking ‘em when they’re down at all, just saying that they or any other team ain’t gonna get my sympathies when it comes to injuries. Not with what my Suns have gone through last season alone (No Amare, no Kurt Thomas when we needed him the most, Raja going down in the WCF, Ginobili purposely flopping into Barbosa’s knee TWICE - and-on-and-on-and-on). Oh, and my Suns have had enough of bad karma to fill several teams’ lifetimes, thank you: Lost the coin flip for Kareem in 1969, Richard Dumas becoming a crackhead, Manning going down in Feb., 1995, McDyess setting the team back 5 years with the crap he pulled in 1999, NEVER having a #1 overall draft pick & no rings in the 38 year existence of the team, to name a few snakebites. Sympathy? HA!!!!! At least the Hawks have a trophy - albeit from 1958 - but still some team hardware. That said, thanks for the “dope” vote. ;)

I was watching and old finals Bulls/Suns game, and i heard Marv Albert say Richard Dumas went 6′7, and 180. Thats definetly crackhead(or European) charictoristics.
- i seen hoop dreams deflate like a true fiends weight.
