It’s that time again. After weeks and weeks of toil and turmoil, it’s time to announce the latest SLAM covers. That’s right, covers. Two guys, two of the best point guards in the NBA, who had two pretty divergent summers…

Nick Martinez says:
Its about time Gil gets a cover. Make sure to airbrush Chris Paul’s nasty Bert eyebrows for his cover pics. Nice work.

Sep.12 at 12:13 pm

Gilbert0 says:
finally gilbert gets on the cover.

Sep.12 at 12:16 pm

D Tox says:
Both these guys are trill! I don’t know which one I would rather have on my squad. If I was short a scorer on my team I would have to go with Arenas but if scoring was taking care of I would have no problem with Chris Paul getting damn near ten assits per game.

Sep.12 at 12:29 pm

Hype says:
I don’t particularly like tats on players or anyone for that matter, but I gotta give props to Gil’s tiger one.. it’s freakin hot, in an artistic type of appreciation only ONLY!

Sep.12 at 12:46 pm

illydiva says:
@NICK, you wrong for that! LOL!
Can’t wait to read the next ish! Both of these guys are HOT in more ways than 1. Props to Chris Paul, but Arenas will be FIRE this season….mark my words…and his.

Sep.12 at 1:00 pm

Alex says:
Ok ok how is this regionalized? Will Miami get the Gilbert issue?

Sep.12 at 1:00 pm

Myung says:
scoop jackson working for espn must’ve finally convinced you all to put a half naked dude on the cover. like everyone above me wrote, it’s good to see gilbert finally get a cover. which reminds me of that all star weekend a few years back (was it in philly?). the one where jason richardson won his first dunk contest. i remember danny ainge was one of the commentators, and he kept saying, “jason richardson chose a good partner tonight…gilbert is one funny guy…i know this dunks going to be great because gilbert is a funny guy.” HUH?!?! ok, so he’s a funny guy…so how does that make him a good dunking partner, danny? weirdo. this is a huge tangent, but i’ve got a ton of all star weekends on vhs and pop ‘em in when i get bored. during the rookie game, there’s always one rookie or sophomore that the crew picks to totally ride his nuts (sorry for the vulgarity) the entire game. one year it was AK47. one year it was jay williams. this past year was chris paul. all they had to do was make one nice play, and danny ainge or coach thompson or dick stockton would just gush over them. um…where was i? oh yeah. good to see gilbert finally get his slam cover. i wonder which cover will be sent to the atlanta market? i’m thinking chris paul, just to rub it in our faces that we didn’t draft him? :)

Sep.12 at 1:08 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
They aren’t regionalized — both covers will be available everywhere.

Sep.12 at 1:14 pm

Myung says:
thanks, lang. i was talking about the ones mailed to our homes, sir. but good to know they’ll both be on stands everywhere. that’s cool.

Sep.12 at 1:19 pm

Max Airington says:
That tat is real?

Sep.12 at 1:53 pm

The Basketball Jones » Arenas Gets His SLAM Cover says:
[…] Lang, in today’s Links, drops the website exclusive sneak-peek of SLAM #102’s new covers. (Yeah, check the plural kids.) […]

Sep.12 at 1:55 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Myung - I THINK CP3 will be the one going to subscribers, but I gotta check on that. And Max, yeah, it’s real. We usually have a pretty strict no-shirtless-ballplayers photo rule (mostly so we avoid the espn mag-gay-softcore vibe), but we made an exception because that tat was so ridiculous. As is Gilbert. Some good quotes in that story about his feelings on USA Basketball, too.

Sep.12 at 1:58 pm

O'Nell says:
Good choices. Not feeling G.A’s tat.

Sep.12 at 1:59 pm

jj says:
I still haven’t received number 101 :( who should I contact??

Sep.12 at 2:00 pm

Myung says:
i’ve kind of felt like gilbert (along with ron artest) sort of channel dennis rodman in terms of being free spirits. so…this cover is cool in that reminds me of one of SLAM’s earlier rodman covers from maybe 1995 or 1996? and thanks for the heads up, ryan…though i’m sure the atlanta market would love receiving the gilbert cover much more. :)

Sep.12 at 2:11 pm

Max Airington says:
The Gilbert I know and love would’ve/should’ve made the tiger’s mouth on his belly button. That’s still crazy though. I’m looking forward to that article.

Sep.12 at 2:19 pm

Chris O'Leary says:
Good call on not distributing the covers regionally. Shouldn’t CP3’s eyebrows be called an eyebrow? There really isn’t an end to it. Unibrows rule though, in an I’m-glad-I-don’t-have-one kinda way.

Sep.12 at 2:26 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
Hey JJ, if you have problems with your subscription, you can click on the “CUSTOMER SERVICE” link at the top of the page.

Sep.12 at 2:36 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
That is a back tattoo, but he got it done on his chest. In other words, it’s a Gilbert Arenas tattoo.
And I think it makes sense to have him topless cause he’s known for throwing his shirt to a lucky fan after the game.

Sep.12 at 2:45 pm

Wayne Washington says:
Point GOD???????????? SLAM watch your mouth! CP is nice but Point GOD is pushing it. I’ll wait til he gets a jumper before I break out the shrine.

Sep.12 at 3:02 pm

Delicious J. says:
DAMMm. Look at Gil’s tat! A close second to my friends full-chest Crocodile with it’s mouth wide open.

Sep.12 at 3:03 pm

jj says:
thanks lang!

Sep.12 at 3:11 pm

Pete says:
when is hinrich gonna get on the cover???

Sep.12 at 3:33 pm

Myung says:
i’m a hawks fan, but i also pull for the bulls. like pete, i’d love to see hinrich get a cover. but honestly, i can’t imagine him getting a solo cover…how about one of those “team” covers (like the suns, pistons, and nets have had in the past)? i could see hinrich, ben wallace, ben gordon, luol, and andres nocioni on a cover.

Sep.12 at 3:40 pm

albie1kenobi says:
if my memory serves me correctly, I believe Slam has used the term Point God on someone else years before. who could that be? God Shamgod? and I’m definitely on the Chris Paul bandwagon. dude’s not lightning quick but his change of pace is great, and his decision making IS lightning quick. now if only he can consistently knock down those 18-20 footers… i think he’ll have a chance of getting All-NBA first team honor about 5 years down the road.

Sep.12 at 4:00 pm

j.r writer.jr says:
those two players are the some of the best point gods in the league right now so good job slam

Sep.12 at 4:06 pm

j.r writer.jr says:
Gilbert is one of the BEST PLAYERS in the nba he needed dat cover

Sep.12 at 4:14 pm

Jack says:
Nice… I’ll probably buy both covers this time. Any idea when it’ll hit the UK? Oh, and is there any subscription setup for over here aswell? Hate getting to like, one of the 2 places in Newcastle that have it and finding they sold out.

Sep.12 at 4:20 pm

iverose says:
am i getting a gilbert one? i live in toronto and i have a subscription. i like chris paul better though…

Sep.12 at 4:37 pm

DeMarco says:
Chris Paul? Check! Gilbert? Check. Now if we could just show some editorial love to Hinrich, Jason Terry, Joe Johnson and Michael Redd, all would be right in the hardwood world!

Sep.12 at 5:29 pm

DBlizzy says:
And I thought I was the only one who noticed CP3’s Unibrow. And Gil, I don’t know about that tat… They are nice though, good cover choices!

Sep.12 at 5:41 pm

Wizfan says:
Whoooooooooooo hoooooooooo!

Sep.12 at 6:37 pm

D Leu says:
Yo,it’s about time CP3 got his shine.Good job,Slam. The Hornets should be awesome this year with Peja and Tyson Chandler with CP3.Can you say NBA Finals MVP?

Sep.12 at 8:05 pm

NZ Baller says:
Nice….Gil’s tat is damn tacky though imo

Sep.12 at 9:59 pm

Will Lee says:
I like him but the Hornets jersey sucks.

Sep.12 at 10:06 pm

Vyse says:
Horrendous tattoo[s].

Sep.12 at 10:28 pm

dust says:
Chris Bosh needs a cover

Sep.12 at 10:35 pm

Dean says:
I really hope i get the Arena’s cover in the mail for my subscription. (not that there is anything wrong with Chris Paul).

Sep.13 at 12:43 am

Killerbee says:
WillLee, as a native of south Louisiana, I’ll gladly take any color Hornets jersey so long as it says “NEW ORLEANS” and leaves off that annoying OKC patch. Marvelous shot of CP aka “The Chef” (he serves up the best dishes in the house ;) ). Looking forward to seeing him, Peja, and the rest of the Hornets playing all their home games in the Big Easy come 2007-08.

Sep.13 at 1:22 am

Boing Dynasty says:
most over due covers:
Ray Allen: CHECK
Gilbert:CHECK
Chris Bosh:…………….. lebronze, melo, and Dwade got like 53 covers between them.
The “we see you Chris” comments are nice, but prove it.

Sep.13 at 1:58 am

luckyluciano says:
Arenas tat is kinda gay- he must have a fetish for lions or he really must have enjoyed the lion king.. And the whole point guard god is a lil far fetched isnt it.. i mean he had a great season and will probably go far in the NBA but what has he brought to the table that cements his place as a NBA god?? give it a rest.

Sep.13 at 3:51 am

Drolfe says:
‘Point God’ doesn’t literally mean that they are God-like, in the transcending time, healing people, bow down and worship kind of way. It’s just a clever way of saying ‘Great Point Guard’.

Sep.13 at 5:26 am

Mark says:
Two very deserving cover guys.
However that New Orleans jersey is so damn ugly!

Sep.13 at 7:11 am

The Pope says:
Chris Paul and Gilbert Arenas. I respect the picks. How about a cover with Kobe and T-Mac? Before last year, they were the “trendy” swingmen before their struggles (TMac with injuries, Kobe with team play) pushed Wade and Lebron into forefront (it didn’t help that Wade and James were really good, too). This coming season, I think they are out for some explosives. They have to. In just one season, they are suddenly “old dogs.” They have a lot to prove this coming year. The title can be “Twin Powers” or “Twin Titans” or “Remember the Titans.” Anyway, just a wild thought. Thanks, Slam.

Sep.13 at 8:03 am

tara says:
finally, my boy Gil gets his cover! when you put out that last kicks i was afraid you were goin to consider that his cover, and if you would have, i would’ve been mad. im glad i was wrong. its kinda messed up you only sending the chris paul covers to subscribers– now ima have to wait a week after the mag hits stands in cities (here in the middle of nowhere, it takes at least a week for them to get out) and then go get the gil cover.

Sep.13 at 10:06 am

johnnyblaze says:
At least! Arenas gets a cover!!! I’ve been waiting for this for the past two years!

Sep.13 at 11:04 am

Bryant Reeves says:
Is it just me, or does it look like the lion got shot in the chin?

Sep.13 at 3:32 pm

Squalle says:
Finally! my boi, Gilbert Arenas, a.k.a the “THE ZERO”, “THE ASSASIN”, n’ MR. BLACK PRESIDENT”, has the recogonition of an NBA Basketball super star, he is an underated man, cause all they do is just hate on him, he can score, n’ shot from any where on the floor, I like Gilbert’s game, that’s why he is my favorite NBA plyer, all he got to do is just bring a championship to our nations capital, hope this is not the only cover he’s gonna be on SLAM, stay cool, n’ safe, Gilbert Arenas, # 1 fan, Squalle!

Sep.13 at 4:06 pm

Mo says:
Nice covers! Say what you will about the reigning ROY’s unibrow or ugly jersey but he is in fact one of the best pure point guards to come into the league in a long time. Just because he had a really nice rookie season, there’s no reason to hate on him. Nice to see Gil on a cover as well. Nice choices Slam!

Sep.13 at 6:55 pm

LordGefroh says:
Gilbert!!! That is the STOAT (Sickest Tatoo Of All Time).

Sep.13 at 9:18 pm

keys says:
Gilbert Arenas’s SEXY ASS!!!! IM SO IN LOVE WITH HIM!!!! Where and When can I pick up this issue? & What about his other cover with those other guys when did that come out?

Sep.15 at 11:51 am

Carlos says:
The Pope where were you for the NBA season im not even a kobe fan but to say he must prove himself after the season he had and refer to him as an old dog is just absurd. I understand T-Mac because of the back spasms and the possibility he may never be as explosive again but KOBE was doing the damn thang. In my eyes, he remains the best player in the L. And as far as team play…he probably deferred to his teamates too much against the suns in the playoffs…as much as i hate him peeps continue to overlook his passing skills.

Sep.15 at 11:58 am

Carlos says:
Good to see Gilbert on the cover. He got love from slam and love from nba2k7 with a 93 rating. Now its time for him to make the allstar team without the help of Mr. Stern and maybe team USA would realize that they should play him as SG and take advantage of his range and driving ability. they should also look into adding rashard lewis, sheed, and ron artest. gil just has to improve his court vision and learn to ditch the ball to the big man when he drives sometimes. Also, one thing about gil he is so quick that he gets out of control sometimes. If he worked on lil hesitations and changes of pace he would get his defenders even more off guard. He should learn from his teamate A. Daniels. He should drop this whole silent assasin thing if he wants to get back at the coaches who didn’t pick him for team usa and according to him didnt even talk to him he shouldnt fire back by saying he is going to score 50 against mcmillan (blazers) and 50 agains d’antioni (suns) he should gurantee victories instead. Either way gil is the man not sure about the tat though.

when will they be released so we can buy these?

Orgil Enebish says:
Gil finally gets his cover, he should have been on the cover of SLAM long time ago. The cover looks awesome, one of the best SLAM covers in a while. Hey SLAM, I’m pissed about one thing though. You guys sent me the Chris Paul cover, I live in DC… It was hard for me to find the one with Gil on the cover, they were already sold out at most places.

Oct.2 at 10:52 am

Mike Wilson says:
Glad to see Arenas finally got a cover. I hope he gets another one real soon. I’m not a big fan of Bert (Chris Paul) and you guys are giving him too much props too fast

Oct.29 at 10:02 pm

The Assimilated Negro says:
Nice covers, but aren’t Gilbert’s shorts a little low? Seems to be rocking the old D’Angelo “how does it feel” look. Maybe one cover is for the fellas, another for the ladies. That’s kind of thoughtful actually.

Oct.30 at 3:57 am

Lang Whitaker says:
Hopefully Gilbert doesn’t gain 50 pounds and go on a bender through Virginia.

SLAM ONLINE | » A Great Gilbert Moment…Almost says:
[…] You may be wondering what this has to do with sneakers. My long-winded (803 words and counting) point, the reason for this post, came in the mail on Monday. Staring up at me from the black box, with his jersey hanging over his shoulder, was Agent Zero, enshrined on the cover of SLAM 102—double enshrined behind the translucent herringbone pattern of the SLAM-Gilbert Arenas adidas sneaker.
