Outrage!
They’re trying to shut down the corpse collector, and no that’s not someone’s streetball name.
I’ve seen people argue on our site about various rankings of basketball players, front offices, and TV announcers. I’m with you in each of those conversations, but I’d like to share something “off the ball” so to speak that’s got me upset. This is pure B.S.
The other day, a friend of mine sent me a link to this video essay in the New York Times. It’s one of the more f’ed up things you’ll see, the story of the Detroit corpse collector. Watch the video, then come back.
Sick, right? Anyways, because of that video, Mike Thomas has lost his job. At the end of today’s story, it says that Mike has been talking to some entertainment industry people - oh, he’s also a rapper by the way - but who knows how that will work out. On a day when much of the media is rallying behind the cause of the SF Chronicle reporters who could go to jail cause they won’t sell out their sources, I hope people still have time to recognize the plight of the Detroit corpse collector.

$14 is less than a metrocard. that just seems like a amazingly low number. beyond the fact that detroit is probably the most segregated and depressing of all the big cities, this is one of the worst things of all time. equally sad is his verse. where he spits violent bars about putting people in a body bag. uh, won’t u be the person putting them in there? and really you figure a guy like that wouldn’t bow down to the gangster aesthetic. i mean he see’s the aftermath everyday and still has the fantasies of inflicting more violence. all jokes aside this is terrible.

I hope the $14/corpse he gets is on top of a regular salaray. Would that make each corpse commision?
If he only gets $14/corpse and he made $14000 last year, it means he’s picking up 1000 corpses/year. Figuring that he works a typical 5 days/week and 48 weeks/year that means he’s grabbing an average of 4.2 corpses a day!!!
Is there anyone else in the world that sees that many dead people/day?

I guess you’d see that many dead bodies on a daily basis during the black plague or in cities during a war/invasion. Detroit is not supposed to be either one of those.
One thing that’s pretty disturbing about the video is the intro talking about the unemployment rate, and then says, well here’s one guy that’s got a job: the corpse collector, you know cause of the abundance of random corpses.
