43. Josh Howard

With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today. Over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now. Today, Mike Fisher from DallasBasketball.com takes a look at Josh Howard…

With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today.

Over lunch at the Outback Steakhouse (word to Steve Irwin), your crack SLAMonline.com staff sat down and ranked the 50 best players in the NBA today. We realize that’s kind of ambiguous, but that’s how basketball is and that’s how we like it. Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment. This doesn’t mean they’ll never be traded, and it doesn’t mean they’re due tremendous contract extensions, but it does mean — since value is king in the NBA — that over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now.

Before long it’ll be time for our annual NBA team previews. Right now it’s time for some law and order…

43. Josh Howard, Dallas Mavericks
by Mike Fisher of DallasBasketball.com

What makes Josh Howard deserving of attention? As much as anything, the lack of same he receives from an ignorant and sloppy media that should be ashamed of itself. Oh, and J-Ho’s level of humility, which flies in the face of his escalating excellence and causes him to rank among the few NBA players actually capable of blushing.

CBSportsline.com recently ranked the top 20 small forwards in the NBA. As an addendum to that, writer Tony Mejia included an “also thought about” group of 3’s. In an oversight later corrected by the writer, not only was Josh’s name absent from the 20 — he didn’t even make the additional 23.

The best NBA small forwards…and you didn’t “also thought about” the guy who last postseason was asked to guard everybody from 7-footer Pau Gasol to MVP point guard Steve Nash to Dwayne Wade? Who was guarded by All-Defensive NBA studs Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen and Shawn Marion and yet, on Dallas’ march to a Western Conference title, averaged 17.4 points and 7.2 rebounds?

RealGM recently took a turn at the same game. They did a top 10. No, Josh Howard wasn’t on it. They tossed out three more “Just Missed The Cut” names. No Josh yet. They spitballed a few more “Names For The Future.” Marvin Williams was on that list. So was Adam Morrison.

Josh Howard, 26, was not.

“They always said I wouldn’t make it at this level,” says Josh. “Then they said I wouldn’t be anything here but a third wheel…That’s one of the motivations that got me to this point. Being a guy that’s been looked down on all his life, guys trying to write me off in college and high school. It’s past that now. I’ve gotten to this point and I think everybody should know.”

But everybody doesn’t know.

Happily, Mavs fans get it.

I asked DallasBasketball.com readers to pitch in with their thoughts. Writes “TripleCrown”:
“He has a knack for not letting anything keep him from getting what he wants; whether it’s a rebound, or a starting spot on one of the best teams in the league when he was supposed end up on the far end of the bench. When he was told he wouldn’t be able to perform athletically because of leg problems at birth, he proved them wrong. Whatever you need from this guy, he’ll give it to you…He’s not a guy that’s flashy, he’s just a guy that gives his all, and is willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win. Finding a player that’s willing to do all of the little things is a hard task in today’s glamour NBA. Finding a player that is willing to do all the little things, and can do all the big things as well? That’s a rare gem.”

Writes “Answer”:
Who is Josh Howard?…Rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, teamwork, community service, leadership and points…When the world championships called, Josh was already at work — building bridges to success for children at risk in his old neighborhood. Josh serves his team and his community with humility and with all his heart.”

Writes “Fro”:
Josh has…
1) The offensive game of James Worthy.
2) The heart and hustle of Eddie Najera and Ronny Brown (Phoenix Suns ’70s).
3) The unselfishness of Steve Nash.
4) The defense and rebounding of a young, un-tattooed Dennis Rodman.
5) The dependability of the U.S. Mail.

All good stuff from the people who pay the bills (except for the “U.S. Mail” reference, which sorta dates my man “Fro.”)

Howard himself doesn’t say much to distinguish himself from the crowd. He wears a headband, doesn’t tie his shorts tight enough and has a crummy nickname. He’s been confused with ex-teammate Marquis Daniels, with fellow NBA star Dwight Howard, and with every young guy in the league named “Josh.” But always, there is the everpresent smile, up until recently featuring braces. Always there is the fire that coach Avery Johnson has helped Howard funnel in the right direction. And always is the sense that J-Ho only speaks when he has something of importance to say.

For instance: Why did he stay all four years in school at Wake Forest?

“There aren’t too many educated black men out there,” Howard says. “That’s important to me.”

What does he think about having been the 29th player taken in the 2003 Draft that also featured LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Wade?

“Yeah, that was a special draft, I guess,” says J-Ho, trying to cooperate with the questioner before turning more frank. “A lot of those guys have become leaders of their teams. (But) a lot of those guys were never seen again.”

What does he think about his elevation from a kid who in his first Mavs season was a “find,” a mostly defensive prospect who averaged 8.6 points per, to his second year when he was at 12.6 per, to last regular season when he reached 15.6 per and got an invitation (declined by Howard because of his commitment to kids’ camps back home) to try out for the U.S. national team? Does he look forward to someday being an All-Star?

“I can always just go and enjoy the festivities,” he laughs.

And then Josh Howard blushes.

Bryant Reeves says:
Finally I pick I can get behind. Josh Howard is quickly becoming one of the most versatile 3s in the game. He might even become the most important player on the Mavs in a few years… Sorry Dirk, I still love your game too.

Sep.18 at 11:12 am

Simmy Sosa says:
I think you guys could have waited a little longer before mentioning Josh Howard. I’m thinking he is in the top 30.

Sep.18 at 11:48 am

Gilbert0 says:
i tend to agree with sosa. howard has really developed into one of the premier small forwards in the league. he was arguably the seconf best player on the team that went to the finals and probably should have been champions. I think he went something like pick 30 as well in the 2003 draft?

Sep.18 at 11:48 am

Gilbert0 says:
oops, didnt read close enough. still 29th pick is pretty silly

Sep.18 at 11:57 am

D Tox says:
If you can’t appreciate this man’s attitude and what he does on the court you have a mental illness or you just don’t watch basketball. So the only beef we should have today is his placement on the list but even that argument is becoming a little redundant. I tell you what, if someone doesn’t like the day’s list then just post another top ten subject and we’ll go at it.

jomay33 says:
Is J-Ho already traded to the Blazers? It’s what it says above beside his name. Please verify?…

Sep.18 at 12:01 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
Nice catch jomay33. Funny that a Dallasbasketball guy would make a mistake like that… According to nba.com (and common sense) Howard is still a Mav

Sep.18 at 12:03 pm

scott says:
I agree with sosa too. Howard is one of the top young players in the game. His versatility is what sets him apart. Hit the big three, guard the opposition best player, or grab a clutch rebound. Howard should be closer to number 30 on this list then number 40.

Sep.18 at 12:08 pm

jomay33 says:
hey Bryant Reeves! i thought ur gone fishing… in Korea?

A_B says:
2bad he wants tayshaun prince money. He says he’s better then tayshaun but tayshaun is 6-9 and he’s 6-7 that’s 2 inches aka 5 cm. He won’t be the no.1 option in dallas, never ever now he’s like the 3rd or summin like that. But dallas had so many scoring options that almost no one gets doubled except for dirk, he’s killing in that mid range department. I think he can go for 20 and 8 from the sf spot and that’s real good. He deserves to be here but he shouldn’t be ranked higher just cuzz he on a winning team.

Sep.18 at 12:14 pm

Gilbert0 says:
A_B is it at all possible that he is part of the reason they are a winning team. I don’t think many would argue against howard being paid the same or more than prince.

Sep.18 at 12:17 pm

scott says:
Howard has a better all around game then Prince. Howard is more valuable to his respected team. I’m not saying Prince isn’t deserving to be on this list too. I’m just saying Howard is option two on his squad where Prince is number four.

Sep.18 at 12:29 pm

1ozzy says:
chalk up another one in agreement with sosa, The pick is definitely too low. Additionaly, I would argue that Howard represents how a drafted guard/forward in the “L” is supposed to develop - “a mostly defensive prospect who averaged 8.6 points per, to his second year when he was at 12.6 per, to last regular season when he reached 15.6 per.”

jomay33 says:
i think what’s more interesting is who’s gonna be number ONE!!! How will SLAM rank AI, KB24, LBJ and DWade… we’re only at No. 43 and we’re getting heated debates already….its getting REALLY interesting….

Sep.18 at 1:06 pm

Ryan Jones says:
“The offensive game of James Worthy.” WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?! Oh, and Jomay33, just to head off the disappointment now, Allen Iverson did not make our top 50. I think we have him 104th.

Shiz says:
Finally one of my dudes gets some shine! Thru that whole draft I was going crazy screamin for a team, ANY team to pick dude up. Four year guy, ACC POY, (wasnt he a naismith winner, too?) and he’s drafted 30th?! I think this is when Dicky V’s pet peeve became a full-on witch hunt. I love seeing stories like Josh’s. I think we spoil our basketball players too much, just like our kids. Its good to see that you dont have to be celebrated, or be on an undefeated AAU powerhouse or some almost-should-be-a-college-program prep school and really make waves in the League. Not just be a stupid “feel good” story for half-time with Mike “you can change your channel now” Tirico. I think we dont get to see how important he is during the course of a game cuz of so many log jams at 2 and 3 but he’s always in at crunch time. And I wonder if Dwyane ever got at that ref with that moeny order for callin that “time out” for the Mavs. As far as importance to the team, expect A.I. and Kob to be 2 and 1 respectively. Nash probably wont be as high as people think he should be, but Im thinkin Mamba and Answer for Pimps 1 and 2. DWade should experience Shaq’s gravitational pull on this one, putting him NOT in the top 3 like we’d think. “If he didn’t have Shaq to open up the lane and command double teams”, ya know that whole shpeal…..
“hmmm” Kobe thinks, “sounds familiar.” S’okay though, the Diesels runnin on fumes and it’ll be DWade all by himself in a minute. He better hurry up and try to win one more ring while the tires are still on.

G and D says:
i think josh howard’s amazing. somewhere back there (it may have been in the links), i read about how tough it is to play against players who don’t play in a predictable way, or something to that effect. these guys are unorthodox in that they don’t always make the same cuts, choose the same lane, have a “go to” shot, hang out in the same area of the floor. because of this, they affect the game in a way that doesn’t always show up on the stats sheet, but you certainly notice if you watch how other players scowl when they realize he’ll be guarding them, or how they have that weird and unclassifiable ability to always be in the right place at the right time, disrupting the flow of the other team and jumping in to keep their team’s flow going. i’m not a mavs fan, but i agree with triplecrown: j howard does whatever it takes- and he does it really well. incidentally, i think the only dips in the mavs winning ways last year were when j howard was down.

Sep.18 at 1:13 pm

Shiz says:
If A.I. is 104th than u’ve really just proven to me how arbitrary and senseless your picks are, Ryan. I thought this list was for the most valuable guy on said dude’s team. Who’s more valuable to their own respective teams than A.I.? He’s only kept that franchise respectable for the past 8 or so years. I think you guys are seriously just blowin smoke up our asses, and just randomly posting about your “boy” who ever it may be. That last “clarification” if thats what you wanna call it isn’t heading off shit. You’ve probably just opened the flood gates. So where would Kob rank. You’d probably say that “well, Mr. 33% of his teams total offense didn’t make the cut…but heeeeeere’s Smush at number 12!”.

Sep.18 at 1:16 pm

Shiz says:
Im just confused now at what the criteria are for this list..and its making it loss more and more meaning with every quirky pick.

Sep.18 at 1:29 pm

jomay33 says:
I just think there should be NO rookies, i repeat, NO ROOKIES on this list, they dont deserve to be here, they havent proven anything yet. Bargnani is a bust, Aldridge is the next Stro No Show, Morrison is a mustache with a face, Thomas will be Malik Allen’s sub, Shelden is all head, no brains, Roy will ride Miles’ jock, Foye will be one of those guys KG did not win with, Gay will wish he could’ve stayed at UConn, Reddick wont play the whole season, and Kwame Brown will be playing at the USBL next season.

Sep.18 at 1:30 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Shiz: WOW. That was a joke. Relax, dude. My dismay at the James Worthy comparison was dead-ass, though. Big Game is a Hall of Famer and was strictly unstoppable in his prime. Josh Howard is neither of those things.

Sep.18 at 1:32 pm

Gumdrop says:
Loved the article on Howard with the absence of being told he rebounds like a young Rodman. Not saying he doesn’t grab boards well for a 3, but you lose me when you push too hard.

Sep.18 at 1:39 pm

scott says:
Wow I thought Ryan was serious Iverson wasn’t in the top 50!

Sep.18 at 1:46 pm

jomay33 says:
Yeah Shiz, relax man! AI is really 105th.

Sep.18 at 1:47 pm

Delicious J. says:
We’re lucky to have Josh in Dallas, he’s a classic draft steal. Now can someone take Portland out from by his name and replace it with DALLAS. Please man, youre going to jinx him or something!

Myung says:
i’d respectfully have to disagree with you, jomay. first of all, we’re beating a dead horse (insert shannon sharpe joke here), but this list was compiled by a group of slam writers over a lunch at an outback steakhouse. i love the concept of this list and all, but more than anything, it’s a nice way for 50 players to get a decent write up on this site by a more-than-likely biased writer who follows the team he plays for. that’s how i’m trying to look at this list. your last comment was actually very funny (props), and as much as i ALSO am confused by the criteria the writers used in making this list (i’ve noted this in past comments and don’t want to repeat them…for my sake, as well as everyone else’s who hate my long comments), i still think it’s OK for rookies to be on this list. just because a player hasn’t proven anything in this league doesn’t mean he has no value or that he doesn’t deserve to be given some recognition. we’d all agree that 2006 was a weak draft, but there are some nice prospects scattered in there (most notably bargnani, tyrus, brandon, morrison, and foye). if a rookie, just because he hasn’t “proven anything,” doesn’t deserve to be on this list, then they probably shouldn’t get guaranteed contracts, sneaker deals, or get drafted by fantasy basketball nerds like me, right? if a player has to prove something just to be on a list (as arbitrary as it is) like this, we might as well send college and foreign rookies straight to the nbdl and make them EARN nba roster spots via try outs. i think a guy like bargnani, as unproven as he is and as much as i PERSONALLY feel he was a huge gamble, has a ton of VALUE for toronto…because colangelo has made numerous moves this past summer to make his transition smoother. that’s just one example. sure, i’d still take josh smith or josh howard over the guy SLAM will put at #42, Wang Zhi Zhi, but we all have our biases. :) btw, i don’t think ANYONE will be riding darius miles’s jock. i’m sorry but i’d much rather have brandon roy, martell webster, or travis outlaw getting playing time ahead of that bust. he’s been in the league since 2000 and has done nothing but get dropped by jordan brand, do that mad annoying “fist to the head” thing with Q, get traded twice, and bricked more jumpers than mutombo or ervin johnson

Sep.18 at 1:58 pm

Myung says:
for all the people who’ve been hating on the length of my comments…i just hope you took the advice i’ve offered several of you and just skipped what i just wrote.

noah doucette says:
i really like howard but i like tayshaun more. even though josh isa better scorer. but keep in mind that tay is still young on an ageing DET squad and howard is young but his team is still relatively young (eg harris, dirk) , save stack. so in the future tay may be more valuable t0o his team. but thats not waht were walking bout so ill shut up

Sep.18 at 2:04 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Even though Shiz is unable to detect sarcasm, which is Ryan’s first language, he is the only person to mention the phrase “time out.” I was wondering if people were going to Webber him to death with that, and I’m happy to see they are not.
He’s a great young player, but I really hope he doesn’t ask to be called J-Ho. That’s been Jennifer Lopez’s nickname for a while.

Sep.18 at 2:10 pm

jomay33 says:
Myung, nice insight. What i mean when i said these guys “havent proven” anything is that no one on this year’s crop will be an immediate star on their team , let alone, in this L. No one’s gonna tell w/c one will be a bust or will ride the pine more than shawn kemp is in Chi next season. When we talk about a player’s worth, we should take into consideration what will they contribute to their respective teams and no one will impact their team as much as the batch os ‘96 did this coming season. And besides there will be more than 50 players aside from these rooks that will be more “valuable” to their teams next season.

Sep.18 at 2:15 pm

Hype says:
Now that I think about it (and by way..*ouch*) there is going to be more than one IMPORTANT player on their team! dun dun dun..
What up with that? Ahh, I’ll just sit back and read the amazing SLAMonline HoF commenter Myung’s analysis.
For what it’s worth, Josh is a good pick. I’m starting to think the numbering system doesn’t really matter… just as long as they’re in the 50.

Sep.18 at 2:21 pm

jomay33 says:
…and for the phrase “to get a decent write” , these rooks just have to earn their’s first. that’s just the way the League works. more players deserve more ink than these guys. guys, that have been in the league that have worked soooooooo hard only to outlook because of some more flashy young’ns who cant shoot a free throw even if Shaq’s life depended on it.

Sep.18 at 2:32 pm

Myung says:
true, jomay…and i’m not trying to convince you to change your mind. but who’s to say, for example, chris bosh won’t suffer a broken foot during training camp, thus increasing his value even more? so if bosh happens to make this list at, let’s say, #15 but misses the whole season, then he might be the most undeserving player on this whole list since he’ll have no VALUE to his team this season. all i’m saying is, no one can really PROVE anything because no one can tell the future. look at the nfl, bro. it’s 2 weeks old, but half the “experts” who predicted the panthers would be super bowl champs are now backtracking. but isn’t that the fun of sports? PREDICTING? PROGNOSTICATING? i bet for every right prediction ric bucher or scoop jackson or bill walton or bill simmons or anyone on the current slam staff has made, a wrong one has joined it at the hip. heck, i know the same is true for me. this is coming from a guy who thought kwame brown would be a 20-10 guy by now. see how much i know (nothing). i’m not disagreeing with your last few points. i agree that we can name 50 (probably 75, if you want to get picky) better players than any of these rookies who made this list (morrison, bargnani), but you and i didn’t make this list. everything’s subjective. and yo, comparing this ‘06 class to ‘96 is like comparing rik smits to hakeem olajuwon. :) i’m thinking the 2000 draft class (kenyon martin’s draft year) is a better comparison. ‘96 (along with ‘84 and ‘03) was legendary, brother. but good thoughts. we’ll just have to agree to diagree. i love talking hoops with people so i’m glad to see you bringing passion and knowledge.

Sep.18 at 2:35 pm

Myung says:
ryan, if saracasm is your first language, then i don’t know whether or not your comment to me was a compliment or an insult. and hype, thanks for the flattering words, homie. but for every person on here who likes my comments (like you), there are other guys who hate ‘em. but thanks for having my back, hype.

Sep.18 at 2:39 pm

Myung says:
i just re-read what i wrote…careless…i was referring to “bargnani” when i was talking about a player’s value going up due to a hypothetical bosh injury (please don’t flame me, raptors fans…i was just using an example). hopefully that didn’t confuse anyone. i’ll try to slow down on the comments now…way too many already (again).

Sep.18 at 2:39 pm

jomay33 says:
Okay, my name really is Larry Brown… Weheheh!!!

Sep.18 at 2:40 pm

1ozzy says:
Given Myungs thoughts (”…it’s a nice way for 50 players to get a decent write up on this site by a more-than-likely biased writer”), And given the previous picks, I just occured to me that sleepers like Channing Frye, Cory Maggette, Camby, Rashard Lewis, etc… will not make this list? Slam! I look to you for insight, news, stats, and all things in between. Now this list is just pissing me off. However, after going back and reading the intro I get it for a second - “…Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment.” - until I think about Darko and that Toronto Cat - most value??? riiiight.

Sep.18 at 2:45 pm

Hype says:
That just means Dwight Howard, or Chris Bosh probably (HOPEFULLY) is included in the list as well. But still, this is a very fluffy list of players.

Sep.18 at 2:46 pm

Hype says:
Fluffy as in: don’t take it serious.

why does it say 43. Josh Howard, Portland Trailblazers… isnt’ he still on dallas?

someone must have used the zach randolph template for this write up. it’s alrite, i did something like that for work too. good times.
i think josh should be ranked in the 30s, but I ain’t complaining. like Myung said, this list is a good way to facilitate convos between hoopheads. just the fact that this list get me so excited about the upcoming season makes this list a success already. although i’d like to reiterate that this list is for fun, it’s definitely a lot more interesting (and funnier) when people take it way too seriously and spit fire. pure entertainment.

Sep.18 at 3:20 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Myung, I was in fact speaking in my less fluent second tongue, “sincerity.” Point being, you got the point, which not everyone seems to be doing. Obviously, half the fun of all this is exactly that — people NOT getting it, taking it too seriously, and getting all crabby about it. I appreciate that you know better.
I am a pretty consistent smart ass most of the time, though.

Sep.18 at 3:23 pm

1ozzy says:
In reading my previous post I can see how I cam off as being ultra pissed off. My fault, not my intention. However, I do appreciate a good argument/debate which this list definitely calls for. In fact, I think that each slam writer (or at least the ones who had a say in a particular selection) should give a few sentences at the end of the day on why.

Sep.18 at 3:48 pm

Ryan Jones says:
1ozzy, it sounds like you’re looking for accountability. We try to avoid that here.
See Myung, THAT was sarcasm. Holla!

Sep.18 at 3:57 pm

jomay33 says:
I think Ryan Jones just gave away the criterion in this selection: SARCASM!

Sep.18 at 5:11 pm

Shiz says:
hey fellas, Im really sorry for not being able to detect sarcasm in a typed blog. Why didn’t you just use the “sarcasm” script?

Sep.18 at 5:21 pm

Shiz says:
Sam there’s no reason to webber JHoward. Everybody knows the Mavs got jobbed on that one. And I was rooting for the heat, but that one felt like watching a fight and seeing someone get sand thrown in their eyes after a Reaux chambeaux to the nuuuuuts.

Sep.18 at 5:26 pm

Shiz says:
And Ryan, dont worry fam…Im relaxed…just had a birthday . Rolled friday night, got crunk saturday night, some tlc dropped into my lap sunday mornin…it’d take more than a little snarkism (is snark-ism a word, anyone?) to ruffle these feathers…today anyway. :) :) see, Im all smiles!! :) )))

DBlizzy says:
I think Myung should have his own separate section where he can pen his novels. Anyway, I always like Howard as a player, but I admired him more after he turned down the USA invite to keep his committment to the kids in his hood. It just shows you the kind of person he is and where his priorities are. It was kinda dissapointing to see some columnists crticize him for that decision. And c’mon Ryan 104th, AI is at least 75th, right behind Tim Duncan and KG.

Sep.18 at 5:40 pm

Shiz says:
Nope. A.I.’s 104th. And LeBron is like 221, cuz ya know, he doesn’t really do that much for his team, he’s got a shitty attitude, and always says the wrong thing. On the other hand, he is from Ohio…gotta count for somethin.

Sep.18 at 5:45 pm

A_B says:
J-Ho haha just like D-Ho that’s even more fucked up haha. Ey do y’all think dallas is gonna win it this year? At least they are contenders. These finals I didn’t feel these finals it didn’t have that finals feeling you know. No real rivalry and that’s bad but a well I was playing ball today and saying to myself whoah all those rules in the nba it’s like a woman’s leauge. So that’s whatsup with they bitchass rulechanges every year. That hard foul from stack that wasn’t worth suspending a player for. What ron artest did in the first round that was no punch. What JT did to finly that wasn’t worth suspension. Reggie Evans haha ok that guy is just crazy. I had that one to and trust me that ain’t no fun. So yeah the nba is becoming an advertised leauge where players with big contracts play even if other players are better and with rules were 12 year olds can get in the lane to create for teammates. p.s. International game my ass it’s basketball for cryin out loud it’s just BASKETBALL I still like watchin the nba don’t worry this just bothers me everytime I hear international ball or hard foul or… suspension

Sep.18 at 5:50 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Starting tomorrow, the site will be renamed Myungonline.com. Seems only fitting, as he’s written more this week than I have in 7 years at this magazine. Good lord. And Shiz, I’m glad you’re in a better mood. I’m disappointed you used “crunk” and “tic” in the same sentence, but I’ma let it slide. Keep doing you, playboy.

Myung, dude…. You have a right to write whatever you want, and I have a right not to read it. I think your comments are less insipid than most, so I normally read them. However, I’m wondering why twice in the last few posts you have felt the need to write an incredibly long comment, immediately followed by another, telling us all that you just made a long comment. We know this. You smack of OCD, brother.

By the way, my prediction is David West at 42. Just a gut feeling.

Looks like you got your fans back Myung. Keep ‘em coming dawg. Finally, a pick that is worth it. Josh Howard is the consummate teammate. He has been the indispensible lynchpin that holds it all for Dallas. Super Uber Dirk might be the star but it’s development of players like J-Ho that will take the Mavericks unto the next level. The fact that CUban let Finley (the long-time face of the franchise) go was a testament of the trust they have on him, his work ethic and his development. The Jordans never won without the Pippens. Respect due. My only question for this pick is “why only 43?” Again, thanks Slam.

I’d feel better about reading everything written by Myung if he used a capital letter at the start of sentences and proper nouns.

I’m a Mavericks fan who hated playing with J-Ho in NBA Live last year, mostly do to his rating. Hopefully EA gives him some mid 80s props this season.

I’m not familiar with the ‘Portland’ referenced typo. I blame Lang for that. Or maybe Ryan. Or maybe this “Myung’ guy, who seems responsible for a lot of the problems here. ;)
As to the Dwayne/Dwyane issue. … I believe his parents actually spelled it wrong first. Not unlike, say, Anfernee Hardaway’s parents, who could have possibly meant for that baby’s name to be spelled “Anfernee.'’

Howard’s awesome; simply put. I agree with the few who have pointed out a point that i often mention to many of the ignorant people I run into when talking basketball with them: the Jordan’s never won anything without the Pippens. Josh doesn’t get the “The NExt Scottie Pippen” crown in my book yet; he’s got to take it from the Matrix. But give him another season, and he will. IF nothing else, his game is a lot more like Pippen’s than Marion’s, but the Matrix is so freakin good, even if his shot does look like some kind of spasm…
And Myung…I don’t think you’re comments are LONG enough. Defintely too short.
