Breaking down TNT’s new NBA schedule…

by Lang Whitaker

So I’m here in………

Vegas! That’s right, I’m out in Sin City (acting as wingman to former SLAMonliner and current SI.commer Arash Markazi) and attending the USA Basketball practices and games. In fact, I’ve gotta roll in a minute to get over to tonight’s scrimmage between Team USA and Puerto Rico (ho-oh!). I’ll have notes on that stuff later.

One thing I got worth noticing is the TNT broadcast schedule for next season. Here’s a list of each NBA team and how often they’ll be on TNT next season. There’s some weird stuff in here:
Atlanta — 0
Boston — 0
Charlotte — 1
Chicago — 9
Cleveland — 9
Dallas — 9
Denver — 5
Detroit — 6
Golden State — 2
Houston — 3
Indiana — 2
L.A. Clippers — 5
L.A. Lakers — 9
Memphis — 1
Miami — 9
Milwaukee — 0
Minnesota — 0
New Jersey — 5
New Orleans — 2
New York — 0
Orlando — 2
Philadelphia — 0
Phoenix — 9
Portland — 0
Sacramento — 6
San Antonio — 6
Seattle — 2
Toronto — 0
Utah — 1
Washington — 1

Looks like they let Sager pick the schedule.

No Sixers games? And if AI gets traded to the Celts, no Boston games?

No KG? No Randy Foye?
No possible Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy and Portland?
No new and improved Toronto Raptors?

The greatest thing is that there’s no Knicks games at all. But there’s two Seattle games, a Bobcats game and nine(!) Chicago Bulls games, which should be a lot of fun to watch as both teams struggle to top 60 points.

What’s surprising to you guys?

definitely a shocker that Philly and Minny won’t be getting any love on TNT.

Danny T says:
Only 5 games for the nets? they have argueably the most exciting backcourts with vince and jason kidd and they ahve richard jefferson too. games with the nets almost always have crazy dunks and alleyoops, which of course brings better ratings.

Lang, stay away from the blackjack tables! You can’t win in the long run! Stick to Texas hold em.

Trust me. You will not want to be seeing Blazer games for any reason this year. It’s gonna be ugly.

Waxtron says:
The lack of Boston, New York & Philly is shocking. Not even 1 game between them? I’m having a hard time deciding if it’s stupid or crazy. At least one of those teams will make the playoffs too.

2 games for indiana!!!i’m a pacers fan and i can’t understand that.i love the team but we are hard to watch. There just isn’t anything that aesthetically pleasing about our team (well unless u count one night at the palace a while back) and no interesting subplots, just which teams going to knock us out in the second round this year.I’m depressed.

winston and the telescreen says:
I dont care because I’m too poor for cable anyway
what really pissed me off this year was that despite living an hour from the staples center
I couldnt find the lakers on poor peoples television (2-13) during the freaking playoffs
the PLAYOFFS!
poor people should get to cheer on their home team too, (massive tangent)

Thank God for league pass.

Thank God Cox Communication in Santa Barbara carries TNT in HD. And winston, you don’t have cable? Get yourself an education and a better job man. What year is this? Do you use an abacus still?

Tunez says:
Gotta admit i’m surprised about the Raptors not getting even 1 game, especially with the “turn around” story we have. I know the season hasn’t started yet but it’s safe to say this team can not in any way be as bad as the team of the past couple years. Pair that with the fact that Bryan Colangelo has stepped in and played the whole divide and conquer strategy as well as the HUGE European presence on this team, you would think TNT would deem it a storyline worth following.

Lang this is just about right! Why should I care for a Blazers game? Wait and see… nothing has changed in Portland. For what was worth, Okafor was also a POSSIBLE ROY seasons ago, and yet who on his right mind actually wanted to watch a bobcat game? And do you seriously think that Toronto will actually be good this year? Come on! I wouldn’t put my money on Bargnani, and the team just lost Villanueva and Mike who!?… only got TJ Ford and Fred Jones… this team did a makeover alright, but it didn’t get any better… in fact it got WORSE! And the Celtics aren’t getting Iverson anyway so why schedule them? Only thing I’d have changed is… Bulls 5 games only (no more please! just imagine 9 nights watching a team scoring less than 60 games… its a nightmare!) and Philly and Minny DEFINETLY deserved some love… The knicks thing is just about right. The team sucked and this are the consecuences… Oh and also… Kobe or not… no way the lakers should’ve gotten 9… I mean sure he might score 100000 points in one game… but the other 8 we will have to watch him shooting bricks, and thats ugly :( The Lakers are by no means better than the Nets, San Antonio, or even the clippers, and yet they are up for much more games. You might argue that “hell they’re the Lakers… they sell!” But if that was the case then why not schedule the knicks? Same thing with the Lakers… dynasty days are OVER. Period!

The TNT studio show is filmed right near the home of my beloved and lowly Hawks. No hometown love, Turner. Not that that’s anything new. No surprises here. I’m sure the Worldwide Follower will air Sixer and Knicks and Celtics games.

Alex says:
Was it me or were the Sixers on ESPN last year more than World Series of Poker? I don’t specificially remember seeing them on TNT, but I do remember watching a lot of Sixer home games last year on ESPN.

baller numero uno says:
the lakers getting nine games holy shiz-nit its only telling us that people enjoy kobes game and the lakers are a rising team

Aug.2 at 12:15 am

Vyse says:
“the lakers getting nine games holy shiz-nit its only telling us that people enjoy kobes game and the lakers are a rising team” I love that logic. “You see, folks, the more games you have on national television, the more promising your team looks to be in the future. Roster construction, on the other hand, is irrelevant.”

Aug.2 at 12:51 am

miami sucks says:
how did chicago an up and coming team get 9 and a team that is proven being the new jersey nets only get 5 please tell me whats wrong with that

Aug.2 at 5:28 am

Dude says:
Its fine that the nets get 5 games, that sounds about right. But its true that Chi getting 9 games is retarded!
At least share the love between Philly/Boston/Minny.

Aug.2 at 6:23 am

Gani says:
they should let each team have one game at least, no matter how crappy they are. what about us fans overseas? i think our cable provider only shows games broadcast by tnt. although i think espn does broadcast a game here once a week. i’m not sure though, and i’d love to watch an nba game, ANY nba game, on tv.

Even being a huge Bulls fan, I also can’t believe I’ll watch 9 of their games here in Brazil. There must be something we’re not seeing…

Wizfan says:
Washington only gets one game? Bullshit

Aug.2 at 2:01 pm

Adam says:
I’m not saying the Bucks deserved a bunch of games—they’re not a big market and don’t have any superstars–but they were in the playoffs last year and they will be again this year, most likely. They’re the only team I can see that meets those qualifications that didn’t get a game on TNT.

Aug.2 at 2:20 pm

SteveSmith#8 fan says:
I’m with you Wizfan, the Wizards only getting one game is a bunch of BS. The Sixers, Celtics, Wolves, and especially the Knicks not having any games is surprising considering that the Bobcats get one game (Morrison factor). I am sure ESPN is going to show at least every team once. No matter how terrible certain teams are I think every team should at least get one game to shine on TNT considering how many games they show. What’s going to happen if Kobe gets injured and we get stuck watching a Kobeless Lakers team against the Spurs?

Aug.2 at 2:32 pm

Pete says:
all bulls games should be on TNT. just kidding. but seriously - the bulls are gonna be an awesome team to watch. they deserve all 9 games. the nation will be blessed by being able to watch the 2007 world champions 9 times on tnt

Aug.2 at 3:44 pm

DP says:
Hey listen Miama Sucks, Miami doesn’t suck, and your ass is going to see that this year. On the subject of TNT, however, that shit is messed up. No Portland , Boston, or Toronto. Damn show the teams with talent some air time. They got the NBA all fucked up with this televison shit.

Aug.2 at 4:18 pm

Steve says:
I too am surprised that the Wizards have only one game. Both 5th seeds from last year — the Wizards and Memphis — got stiffed with only one game. Otherwise, the rest of the list seems mostly on target. Thank goodness we don’t have to watch the Knicks this year.

Aug.2 at 4:18 pm

CZ says:
It seems as though it would make more sense to leave the television schedule for the NBA more wide-open. The first month or so, base the lineup off of pre-season predictions to determine the better matchups, but from then on out have the schedule based on teams’ records. That way, if the Lakers suck ass this year (which they probably will) we won’t be stuck watching Brian Cook trip over his own feet for nine games. If (gasp!) Toronto has a breakout season (which could happen, I guess), then people could see how good they’re doing. Seems like a better marketing angle for the GAME of basketball.

Aug.2 at 4:24 pm

Joe says:
TNT is just going to gimmick the Bulls and Ben Wallace thing to death, in ways like they do with “The Closer”. Don’t worry, ESPN will beat the trade rumors to death so we’re covered between both networks.

Aug.2 at 8:51 pm

nick says:
bulls deserve 9 games huh?….i bet the celtics finish ahead of them without AI or any TNT love

Aug.3 at 2:20 pm

Amit says:
No raptor games? I know they werent that good last year but come on. There going to be much better this year with bargnani and T.J. They also have anthony parker the best player not in the nba (but he is now) and fred jones the 2004 dunk contest winner. Those guys with mo pete and Chris bosh are gonna be sick. If the bulls can get 9 games the raps should atleast get one.

Aug.3 at 6:08 pm

Punisher says:
Raps should have had at least one game they will draw a bigger audience worldwide than any team and beyond that they will be a team to watch and beat this year the fact they get no love from tnt is facking bull

Aug.4 at 10:51 am

Sean (San Fran) says:
As a Bulls fan, I’m biased - so I won’t bother to comment on that :) But NO Philly, NO TDot, and NO T’Wolves games…strange. No AI, KG, or Bosh…man…I hope ESPN/ESPN2 is picking up the slack? Anyone check yet to see what they are showing?

No KG on TNT. Boring ass San Antonio gets 6 games and KG can’t get 1. Utah gets one and AI can’t get on. Chicago 9 times! This is a C-O-N-Spiracy if I ever saw one.
