U-S-A!
Time for the real games to begin.
Despite being bumped by ESPN2 in favor of a replay of some tennis tournament in Ohio or something — and people at ESPN wonder why we question their commitment to the NBA and elite hoops — Team USA played Korea last night and handled their business rather easily, winning 116-63. I didn’t see the game (obviously), so I’m going totally off the box score, but a few things worth noting…
• Yesterday I wrote how Gilbert Arenas‘ groin injury seemed suspicious, particularly the way it happened just before the team had to cut a player. An NBA-related person who shall remain nameless emailed me…
Yo…I saw your note about Gilbert…you are so right about the “injury”…I heard about a week ago, he was one of the 2 guys to go…too bad, because he was really into repping the whole USA thing.
Of course, this isn’t to say Gilbert didn’t really get injured. As several of you pointed out in the comments section yesterday, Gilbert’s long had problems with groin injuries, which are notoriously hard to treat. Also, I was in Vegas with the team a week or so ago and heard nothing about him being the guy to go — though it was obvious to me from the way he was playing (or wasn’t playing) that he wasn’t the best fit for this team.
• I still think Bruce Bowen will be the other guy to be sent home. In yesterday’s game he played 14 minutes, had 1 foul, 4 points and 2 turnovers. No rebounds, no blocks, no steals, which is not good for a defensive specialist.
• I totally should’ve put money on Bowen and Arenas getting sent home while I was in Vegas. I bet back then I could’ve rated some great odds.
• Fewest minutes played last night? Dwight Howard with 9, although he still finished the game tied for the team lead in rebounds.
• If I had watched the game, my favorite Korean player would probably have been Bang Sung Yoon.
• As best as I can tell from this, Team USA’s next game will be on Friday night/Saturday morning at 1:00 a.m. against Puerto Rico. And from now on, all the games count.

DH12 should mos def be starting over shane “bike helmet” battier. Is is just me or is it coincidental that the Duke coach is starting 2 Duke players, the other being the much deserved, Elton Brand, who is one of the most underrated players in the L i might add. It’s hard for me to question what coach K is doing considering the ass whippings we are laying on everyone, except Barbosa and Co., but I have to imagine DH12 and LeBron over Opie Hinrich might be a little better starting 5. PG - LeGolden Child James
SG - DWade
SF - Melo
PF - DH12
C - EB Bring home the gold baby!!!!!

LeBron isn’t going to be this team’s point guard. That’s not his purpose on the team. He’s too big and tall to be used there… he’ll more likely play the 3 and 4. If LeBron were at the point then Chris Paul or Hinrich would really find less time.

As i recall, Jordan ran the point for Dream Team 1 and he was 6′6″ and the reason he did so was b/c Magic was too big and tal.. wait, no he was injured or sick or something. I don’t think less time for Hinrich would really hurt the squad either. Just my opinion. And personally, I think LBJ would do a helluva job diming off dwight, elton, etc. He looks good when he dimes Big Z so you know he could run this squad. Oh yeah, matchup nightmare!!!!

But it is what it is… I got love for Hinrich too and I really don’t care who starts/plays as long as we can bring home the gold. Go USA!!!

Drew says:
Jordan did PG duties for Dream Team one because Stockton was injured and Magic was the only other PG around, so when he was resting Jordan took over. Here’s hoping my man Bosh stays with the team, I think this experience will improve his game a lot and with such a young team in T.O. this year, his assertiveness and confidence will be crucial.

Bosh needs to stay on man. What the hell is battier and bowen doing? nothing. Also I got to respect what Joe Johnson has done for the team. He has been one of the more solid and consistant players on the team. They need to cut Bowens sorry ass of that team or Battiers they dont even know what the Hell they are doing out there.

Greetings from Seoul, I went to the game yesterday afternoon. It was basically a slow motion ass kicking throughout the first quarter. The corean team came out pretty riled up as they had their fans support. They kept pace with the US squad until around the end of the first quarter, trading three buckets for two. Someone must have said something to Lebron because about midway through the first he went baseline and rammed one, then came back down a couple times in a row and went for delf draining threes and punking the poor guy gaurding him. Lebron was money throughout the whole game, but I noticed he doesn’t carry himself on the court as he did in previous games I’ve watched. He showed flashes of whiney bitch and arrogance. Something I wouldn’t expect from him. The second quarter opened up the flood gates by the US team running a high pick and roll. D.Howard would come out and set a screen left and they just took whatever the D would give them. Most of the time it was a drive and foul. They literally did this 15 times in a row, which was amusing to watch. The corean team lost their composure at this point and it all went bad. Fast breaks led to dunks, which led to the crowd quieting down leading to stagnent offense for the coreans. Much of the second quarter was like a lay-up line for the US. Battier played well on D as you’d expect. Wade was busy on the defensive end as well, however Heinrich played quite poorly. He was getting beat quite often whether in the post or on the drive. I’d must rather have World Famous on the team (as long as he’s not going all Lebron on us). The last thing worth noting was #52(?) on the corean team. He was intimated so bad by ‘Melo that he chucked up a left handed airball lay-up. The corean coach yanked him immediately the next play. Quality entertainment The third quarter opened up with the refs calling it A LOT tighter on the US team. Heinrich picked up like 3 fouls in a minute it seemed. They were getting really chintsy and the US fans let the refs have it. The US adapted their style of play (basically just sucking it up and holding their tongue). They continued the onslaught mainly with D.Howard’s defensive play leading to fast breaks. Beastmaster erased 4 shots in a span of 5 minutes, even throwing a 3-pointer into the third row, he completely dominated the glass. Give that guy a year or two and watch him put up a 20-20 season. Chris Paul had a really good second half busting dudes ankles with ease and getting everyone involved. Brad Miller went coast2coast on a steal break-away finishing with the whitest of white-man lay-ups. It was all the fundamentals of the WNBA wrapped in some Washington Generals funk. Throw it down big man! Best play of the game: Wade’s ridiculous alley oop toss to Lebron. The crowd went crazy even getting the coreans to start cheering. They refused to show the replay on the big screen as the coreans were royally taking it in the ass down 50+ at the time. Good times all around

Great summary DimeDocta! Wish I could have watched the game like you did, but your update will keep me going until the real thing starts in Japan.

Taking into consideration how Gil responded to college predictions that he would play zero minutes in the NBA, being drafted in the 2nd round, and not being selected to the all star team by the coaches I do not think Gil would bow out from the US team with a fake injury. I think, instead, he would stomach getting cut and let it be known that it stung and use it as inspiration throughout the season. Gil would hold onto that grudge until he has the gold medal wrapped around his neck. My good friend at espn boards adds: Stop with the conspirsy theories. I don’t buy that this was a way for gil to bow out without losing face. First of all gil would not bow out quitely, he would let coach K cut him and add it to his leagacy of being passed over. Any way he wasn’t going to get cut. Even if Hinrich was the back up PG, gil is versitle enough to be keep as a PG/SG. Which lead to the even more ridicous theory that he was unhappy with the limited minutes and role. When has gil express even the sightest bit of unhappiness thoughout the whole tryouts. Gil has been a cheering his teamates on and has been one of the faces of USA basketball. He would have been happy siting on the bench. That is much more of a validation than going home with an injury. We are talking about a chance to make the US national team. This is the same guy who framed is invite to camp. Thats not to say that this groin injury does not look suspicious. It is possible that coach k and gil had a falling out. While gil’s game has not adapted as well, i dont think he has been given the same opportunity to play his style of game as some of the other stars.
