Classic Bill Walton quotes

The Bill Walton cartoon triggers a certain reaction.

By Sam Rubenstein

Bill cartoonThis gets its own post. The Need4sheed is taking Bill Walton and his new cartoon to task. Now, I was once at the forefront of the hating on Walton movement. I hated everything about the man, from the irresponsible hyperbole to the hippe turned hardass routine to that terrrrrrible voice. The exagerations… the contradictions… the constant reverence for the greatest person ever born on this planet, who of course is coach Wooden. Slow it dowwwwn, big man.
The thing is, I miss Bill doing big NBA games. Hubie Brown and Mike Breen provide better information, which is usually factually correct, but they don’t have Bill’s personality. Me and a friend of mine have been doing Walton impressions for like 10 years now. It got so bad that we had to try and quit it, like smoking. But you can never really quit. You just have to know going in that he is not there to inform you, but to entertain. Laugh at him, not with him.
Go to the need4sheed and check out some of his legendary hyperbole.

Bill is the man when he’s not talking nonsense. Hey Lang, what about those jumpsoles? I’m going to keep on asking to you answer me.

DP, if I had any jumpsoles, I’d give them to you. But I don’t, so I can’t and I won’t.

Unless the game is dreadful, Bill Walton is a pitiful distraction with his incessant rambling and constant flip-flopping. Never mind his near-homo tendencies to declare a player “a beautiful physical specimen”. I actually enjoy Hubie Brown and can ignore Breen when necessary. Walton and his team is like a horrible improv troupe, except he always leaves his mates hanging. Most of the time they don’t even know how to respond or play along with his warbling. I say good riddance. And since I promised to always comment on the physical, Walton Sr is not easy on the eyes. Walton, Jr, however, has potential as long as he doesn’t age into his pops.

I love Bill Walton! A couple times a game, he’ll bring up an interesting observation, usually from the perspective of a low post defender. These can be quite enlightening. The rest of the time, he is hilarious! The classic moment is when he was asked to name the top-5 defenders of all time. He said “Russell, Jordan, Pippen, (some other guy that I’m afraid I can’t remember), and anyone else you want to put on the floor. With those 4 guys on the floor, the fifth guy doesn’t matter”. Tom Tolbert lost it! Tom insisted a few times that Bill give up a 5th name, but Bill dismissively stuck with his original list. Good times.

the fifth guy was of course actually Walton, he reserved that spot so that if his dreams came true he could like play with his “beautiful physical specimens”

Anyone who hates on Mr. Walton is greatly insecure and should be banished from America because they don’t deserve the simple pleasures like hearing Mr. Walton grace us with his commentating. The mere fact that you are thinking of him enough to write a message about him shows that his nature is engraved into your mind. And to attack a happily married (and very successful) man about his sexuality simply because he has the dream job (and an Emmy for his troubles)that you desire. And for those who mock his wording (E.I. ‘beautiful physical specimen”), simply ask yourself ‘how many other sports analysts do you write blogs about?’. I hope I am not alone in saying that it is great to see Bill Walton healing up and getting back to form. Walton NEEDS to be at these Finals and giving us more announcing gems like he did for so long. Check out this list of All-Time greatest Bill Walton quotes and be reminded why he is one of the classics: http://www.themoviemind.com/2008/06/05/best-bill-%e2%80%9cw
