Miami’s destiny…

Nothing happened last night. No NBA games.

Nothing happened last night. No NBA games. So, I spent my time in a meditative trance and thought about Dallas and Miami. I’ve been playing God of War, so my mind is consumed with greek mythology these days. Every story that we tell as a society has its roots in the same kind of themes as the old myths, extending to the knights of the round table, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Gangs of New York, the Godfather, etc. I believe that after a team wins the championship, once hindsight is 20/20, you can look back and find their story and realize it could never have happened any other way. If there’s a team in this year’s Finals that has the feel of greek mythology to it, it’s the Heat. The old wise coach, who started to put the pieces in place then banished himself out of the shame of losing, only to keep fixing his team to the point that he had to be the one to take control. An old, wise warrior who left a crumbling dynasty to re-emerge on the other side of the league, and now his leadership is bigger than his once dominant performances. The young golden boy who can do no wrong but play hard and fight to win. Journeyman after journeyman who had flameouts in various places around the league, big-time primadonnas, and now all united as role players. Yeah I’m over dramatizing, but it’s true. While we’re at it, I believe in things like curses, hexes, jinxes and all of the supernatural forces that decide who wins and loses games, featuring that magic word: destiny. Don’t freak out but this is being posted on  the date 6-6-6. If I get struck by lightning, I have nobody to blame but myself. As for the other team in the Finals, Dallas is really solid, except the only storybook-like event for them was finally overcoming the Spurs. The Mavs are an improved version of last year’s team, even more committed to defense. Now think about this: if the Mavs win this thing Keith Van Horn and Erick Dampier will have a championship rings and memories you can never take away from them. Have a nice life Barkley, Karl Malone, Dan Marino, Barry Bonds, Peyton Manning, etc. It just doesn’t feel right.

» Waiting for the Finals: Day 1 - SLAM ONLINE says:
[…] Cleveland could pull off the upset, I suppose. But not really. Mike Brown is making the jump from facing Flip Saunders to facing Popovich. This could get ugly. Maybe the Spurs will have one of their off games and the Cavs can steal one, but it’s hard to see any scenario with the Cavs winning. I remember last year, after playing too much God of War, writing a whole column about how Miami would win the Finals because of destiny and storylines. Here is that column, which appeared on the old site but was updated in translation. See? Sometimes you just have throw everything you think you know out the window. Sometimes things happen just because. Experts tend to over analyze. Last year everyone was gushing about how Miami would have no answer for Dirk, and there was no way Dirk would score less than 35 a night. Yeah, well that did not happen. Cleveland is in a similar place to where Miami was last year right now. You can’t really make a logical argument for why they should win, or even drag this thing out as far as say 6 games. But sometimes weird things just happen. Either way, it’s been a great season for the Cavs, even if they get swept with the quickness. […]
