Miami's destiny…

Nothing happened last night. No NBA games. So, I spent my time in a meditative trance and thought about Dallas and Miami. I’ve been playing God of War, so my mind is consumed with greek mythology these days. Every story that we tell as a society has its roots in the same kind of themes as the old myths, extending to the knights of the round table, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Gangs of New York, the Godfather, etc. I believe that after a team wins the championship, once hindsight is 20/20, you can look back and find their story and realize it could never have happened any other way. If there’s a team in this year’s Finals that has the feel of greek mythology to it, it’s the Heat. The old wise coach, who started to put the pieces in place then banished himself out of the shame of losing, only to keep fixing his team to the point that he had to be the one to take control. An old, wise warrior who left a crumbling dynasty to re-emerge on the other side of the league, and now his leadership is bigger than his once dominant performances. The young golden boy who can do no wrong but play hard and fight to win. Journeyman after journeyman who had flameouts in various places around the league, big-time primadonnas, and now all united as role players. Yeah I’m over dramatizing, but it’s true. While we’re at it, I believe in things like curses, hexes, jinxes and all of the supernatural forces that decide who wins and loses games, featuring that magic word: destiny. Don’t freak out but this is being posted on  the date 6-6-6. If I get struck by lightning, I have nobody to blame but myself. As for the other team in the Finals, Dallas is really solid, except the only storybook-like event for them was finally overcoming the Spurs. The Mavs are an improved version of last year’s team, even more committed to defense. Now think about this: if the Mavs win this thing Keith Van Horn and Erick Dampier will have a championship rings and memories you can never take away from them. Have a nice life Barkley, Karl Malone, Dan Marino, Barry Bonds, Peyton Manning, etc. It just doesn’t feel right.
