The No. 1 Connecticut Huskies got the chance to show how far the rest of women’s college basketball is to them on Monday, when they took on second-ranked South Carolina. Both teams entered Monday’s game in Columbia, SC, with identical 22-0 records.
Unsurprisingly, Geno Auriemma’s squad marched to a 66-54 win. This was impressive for a number of reasons, first because it happened on the road against the assumed second-best team in the nation, second because the Huskies walked out of Columbia with its 60th win in a row.

The star of the game was the woman who has led the team all year: Breanna Stewart. She played all 40 minutes and dropped 25 points and 10 rebounds on the Gamecocks while blocking 5 shots. On the season, Stewart is averaging 19.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 3.3 blocks and 1.7 steals per game.
Additionally, two more seniors have taken on huge roles for the Huskies this year—Morgan Tuck is at 14.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a night, while Moriah Jefferson is throwing down 13.5 points and 5.6 assists a game.
With this much talent, the best coach in the country and its recent road win over the No. 2 team in the nation, it raises a question that seems to come up every year: Can any team stop UConn?
