Should Carmelo Anthony opt out of his deal with the New York Knicks next summer, the Los Angeles Lakers are one of the teams that will recruit him hard. (Melo, of course, isn’t the only superstar on their radar in 2014.)
Despite Kobe Bryant’s desire to play alongside him, Anthony doesn’t seem to think it’s very likely that he’ll bolt Manhattan for Hollywood.
Cornered by TMZ, Carmelo said “I doubt it” when it was implied he could be wearing purple and gold soon (via the NY Post):
Anthony was asked if he could see himself in “purple and gold” by the camera man/gossip reporter. “I doubt it …” Anthony said.
After some joking that led to suggestions he was headed to Los Angeles, Anthony said, “I don’t think you should read between the lines.” Anthony was asked about teaming up with his rival (LeBron) James, who as Anthony pointed out, he’s won two gold medals with. But as far as partnering up in the NBA, Anthony seemed less intrigued. “I don’t have them conversations,” Anthony said.
The 2014 NBA free agent class is a monster one, and the Lakers will be looking to spend on major talent. So far, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony are two stars who have publicly said they’re not all that intrigued by the idea.
