The Washington Wizards will start their training camp this week without forward Rui Hachimura, who will be absent from the team for personal reasons. The team reported that it is an excused absence and there will be more updates in the future.

Hachimura averaged 13.8 points and 5.5 rebounds last season in 57 games while shooting 47.8 percent from the field. He averaged 13.5 points as a rookie in 2019-20. The Wizards have projected him to start and will be counting on him to take a step forward in his third season after watching him play well with Team Japan during the Tokyo Olympics over the summer.
In Hachimura’s absence, the Wizards have options with newly acquired Kyle Kuzma and Montrezl Harrell from the Lakers along with Deni Avdija, Davis Bertans and Anthony Gill.
The Wizards open the preseason Oct. 5 at Houston. Their regular-season opener is at Toronto on Oct. 20.
