The top pick in the recent draft, Cade Cunningham is starting to hit his stride. The face of the Detroit Pistons, he had a fairly slow start to his career, but is starting to show why he was the first player drafted.
On Sunday night, the 6-foot-8 guard posted a triple-double in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. On the season, he’s now averaging 16.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists.
Although it’s on a rebuilding team, the rookie is leading the Pistons in assists and is second in points per game. In 15 games during the month of January, he’s averaged 17.3 points per contest while shooting 36.5% from beyond the arc.
Cunningham still has plenty of time to make a case for NBA Rookie of the Year. Early on, Evan Mobley of the Cavaliers seemed to be the favorite, but with each passing game Cunningham continues to climb the ladder.
