Brooklyn Nets to Continue Honoring Franchise’s ABA ‘Stars and Stripes’ Uniforms (PHOTOS)
The Brooklyn Nets debuted their ‘Brooklynized’ version of the franchise’s ABA ‘Stars & Stripes’ uniforms last Friday against the Phoenix Suns. They will once again don the alternative unis tonight when they face the New Orleans Pelicans at Barclays Center and will continue to do so on three other occasions over the next month.
The team began wearing the ‘Stars & Stripes’ uniforms in February of 1972 when they were hooping at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island as part of the American Basketball Association. In the years of playing with the ‘Stars & Stripes’ during the ’70s, the Nets played in three ABA Finals, winning it all in 1974 and 1976.
It’s regarded as one of the “greatest periods” in franchise history and thus wearing the ‘Brooklynized’ version is viewed as a way to connect today’s King County culture with its Long Island roots.
Not only are the players honoring the team’s rich legacy, so are the Brooklynettes dance team, who hosted a Fashion Face-off design contest for local fashion design students to decide on which uniform to wear to accompany the Brooklyn Stars & Stripes jerseys. Ultimately, the winning design was created by Pratt Institute student Jennifer Seo and produced by famous designer David Dalrymple.
