The Orlando Magic will be starting the 2021-22 season short-handed.
On Tuesday, the Magic announced that point guard Michael Carter-Williams underwent surgery on his left ankle and, as a result, will miss the start of the upcoming season.
Carter-Williams underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment in his left ankle, and his timetable to return to basketball activities is to be determined.
Carter-Williams joined the Magic in 2019 and has played in 88 games for Orlando, averaging 7.5 points and 3.3 assists per game. Last season Carter-Williams played in 31 games, starting 25 of them, and averaged 8.8 points, 4.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Over Carter-Williams’ eight seasons in the NBA, he has played for six teams and in 391 total games, averaging 10.3 points and 4.4 assists per game. Carter-Williams even won Rookie of the Year in 2013-14 with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Because of his absence, young guards on the Magic like Jalen Suggs, R.J. Hampton, Markelle Fultz and Cole Anthony will have the opportunity for more playing time at the start of the season.
