The NBA has done a great job in recent seasons when it comes to scheduling preseason games against some of the top internationl teams in the world.
However, with a shortened preseason prior to the 2020-21 NBA season, this wasn’t an option. With that in mind, the potential plans for future preseason games could hit close to home for Luka Doncic.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently told Marc Stein of The New York Times that he has had dialogue with the NBA about the Mavericks playing Luka Doncic’s former team, Real Madrid, as well as in his home country of Slovenia once the NBA resumes scheduling preseason games overseas in future seasons.
Prior to the 2018-19 season, the Dallas Mavericks played two preseason games in China, which would be similar to what this scenario would look like. Before entering the NBA, Doncic won the EuroLeague MVP playing for Real Madrid and was the youngest to ever win the award.
With the NBA pushing to expand their global footprint, these are the unique types of opportunities that could become a reality in future years.
