Heading into this year, a lot has been made of the players like Deandre Ayton and Collin Sexton, who reportedly did not reach a contract extension of their rookie year deals.
The San Antonio Spurs’ Lonnie Walker IV is one of those players, but when talking with Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News, Walker revealed he is using the negotiations as motivation.
“I ain’t worried about the contract,” he said. “I think God willingly, I’ve got good karma, good energy around me. Things will turn out the way they are supposed to.”
Walker says one way he will turn that hunger into on-court performance is by becoming more engaged on both ends of the floor.
“I think I’m more excited, more hungry. I’m starving more than ever. I’m trying to stay active offensively and defensively and do what Pop wants me to do.”
Walker is entering his fourth year in the NBA and is coming off his best season in the League, where he averaged 11.2 points per game last year, almost double his average of 6.4 points per game from the year before.
Walker has got off to a strong start in three games this year, putting up career-highs in points (15.3), rebounds (3.5) and assists (3.3) per game.
