The New York Knicks will part ways with 26-year-old point guard Elfrid Payton, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The move will free up $7 million for New York given Payton’s non-guaranteed 2020-21 season.
Payton had a solid 2019-20 campaign with a confusingly built Knicks team and averaged 10.0 points and 7.2 assists per game. He inked a two-year deal with a partially guaranteed $8.0 million year in 2020-21.
Payton has now played for four teams in three seasons and will set out to find a fifth. He’s been productive at each of his stops but hasn’t had an opportunity to fill a role on a team in contention for a playoff spot.
The 26-year-old was the No. 10 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
