Update #1, Feb. 9: The Grizzlies have waived Waiters, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
The Memphis Grizzlies do not intend on retaining Dion Waiters, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports. The veteran swingman was dealt to the Grizz in the team’s three-way deadline deal.
Waiters has had a disappointing 2019-20 campaign for a myriad of reasons and will now be either bought out or straight up released by the franchise. Waiters’ contract doesn’t expire after this season so the Grizzlies will eat a considerable amount of money in any negotiation.
In addition to the the $12.1M Waiters earns this season, he’s on the books for $12.7M next season. That sum could come down in buyout negotiations.
If bought out by the Grizzlies, Waiters would not be permitted under league CBA rules to return to the Heat.
