Goran Dragic made headlines last week when he said that he was not interested in staying with the Toronto Raptors long-term and that he has “higher ambitions.”
Dragic has now walked those statements back and apologized to Raptors fans for the comment while talking with Sportsnet’s Micheal Grange.
“My message basically, to all Toronto fans, is I would like to apologize. It didn’t come out the right way. I know they love their team, and they should be proud, it is one of the best organizations in the NBA. They’ve already won a championship and I didn’t, so what I said, it really was not appropriate,” said Dragic.
Dragic found himself in this predicament after being traded to the Raptors as part of the sign-and-trade deal that sent Kyle Lowry to Miami Heat, where he went on to sign a three-year $85 million contract.
Dragic played seven seasons with the Heat before being traded, playing in 391 games and averaging 16.2 points and 5.2 assists per game.
The future for Dragic remains unclear after the trade to the Raptors. A trade is still possible that would ship Dragic back to a contender, or a buy-out is also on the table since Dragic is on an expiring contract worth $19.4 million.
There’s even a possibility that Dragic remains with the Raptors for next season, although that currently seems unlikely.
