Brooklyn Nets guard David Nwaba has torn his Achilles and is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. Nwaba suffered the injury during the team’s Thursday night clash with the San Antonio Spurs.
The injury, that can and often does come with as much as a year’s worth of recovery time, comes at a particularly unfortunate time for the Brooklyn two-guard. Nwaba’s role in the Nets rotation had increased throughout the month of December.
Nwaba played well enough to secure his job with the Nets franchise at a time when the club was forced to cut a healthy body when Wilson Chandler returned from his suspension.
Nwaba suffered the non-contact injury to his right leg in the fourth quarter of the team’s game as he motioned to cut toward the net for an offensive rebound.
The setback gives Brooklyn their fourth significant injury as Kevin Durant, Caris LeVert and Kyrie Irving all nurse various ailments. If the league rules that LeVert and Irving could be out for two additional weeks, the team could be granted a hardship exception.
A hardship exception would allow Brooklyn to ink a 16th player to their roster less than a week after having to cut one for Chandler.
