In an effort to keep their young core intact, the Atlanta Hawks and Clint Capela agree to a two-year contract extension that will keep the 27-year-old center with the Hawks through the 2024-25 season, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Capela, who only had two years remaining on his previous contract, came up big last season for the Hawks, leading the league rebounding at 14.2 per game while anchoring the defense for a team that surprised and shocked everyone on the way to the Eastern Conference Finals.
In the postseason itself, of which he was no stranger of as a former member of the James Harden-led Houston Rockets, Capela continued to shine. Averaging 10.1 and 11.2 points per game throughout the 2021 NBA Playoffs, Capela’s toughness and experience only served to magnify his contributions.
As a result, he’s been handsomely rewarded.
Per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Sarah K. Spencer, Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk views Capela as a vocal leader and long-term piece for their team:
“Clint is one of the premier defensive and rebounding big men in the league,” Hawks GM Travis Schlenk said. “His presence in the paint and voice on defense had a tremendous impact on our success last season. He is a great teammate who leads by example and we are excited to have him as a part of our team long-term.”
